Tenchi.

Whelp. Time for a re-watch! Universe, followed by the OVAs, then it'll be on to Outlaw Star and a few other choice anime to complete the Nostalgia classic.

Re-watching Moribito because my roommate hadn't seen it. I'm really enjoying it despite this being my 3rd full viewing and like 4th viewing of the first half of the series.

Monday in another country on work, crappy day with lots of stress and the prospect of even a worse week because of insane work load until I take my plane back home next Friday...

And yet, it seems it was a fantastic day after watching today's Non Non Biyori... I'm going to be miss the happiness this show gave me every Monday but I plan to buy the entire show. The studio deserves all my support for 12 Mondays filled with joy and happiness.

I need someone who's read the Arpeggio of the Blue Steel manga to report to the goat locker asap. Because I am potentially HACKED OFF HARD over this week's episode.

Spoiler:
Beyond Iona's two sisters being evil creepy little girls, and Iona's fething awesome new heavy cruiser upgrade, did those fethers really just kill of Takao? She was my favorite character! I am also kinda upset at the dwindling number of ships in Blue Fleet even as the AIs under Gunzyo's command increase. Goddess dammnit I want full scale fleet actions here! Since it's implied Maya (who apparently doesn't exist?), Kongo and Iona's creepy siblings join Blue Fleet I want to see the two Submarines, Three fast battleships (four if you count the one nutter), two heavy cruisers and Iona's.... heavy submarine? Duking it out hardcore with everything the fog can throw at them in the Pacific Any spoilerific hints from the manga on that one? At least tell me if Takao is okay or not!.

Spoiler:
The thing with Takao happens in the manga too, sort of. Takao gets sunk by (characters not appearing in this anime) as part of a decoy operation. It's not entirely unexpected, considering that her actions from here on in the manga are bound up with a lot of characters not appearing in this anime, In the manga 400 and 402 save her core and hand it off to Yamato, who partially rebuilds her. Unfortunately 400 and 402 make a lot less sense in this version than they did in the manga. In it they were operating under the orders of Yamato who is unfortunately entirely removed from the anime. Along with Haruna's much more bloody assault on the Army, and the fact that Haruna, Maya, and Kirishima are off doing their own thing with Kongo not really in the picture anymore save where she's starting to come within Yamato's sphere of influence.

Am I the only one watching Gundam Build Fighters right now? I enjoy the hell out of the show, but it also pisses me off to no end when they constantly feature Mobile Suits THAT HAVE NO MODELS! The most recent episode, 10, is especially guilty about that with the Cobra Gundam, Geymalk, and GUAIZ showing up. Not to mention there was a Gelgoog using the SUMO's flight system. Or there's pretty much ANY time something shows up from X. Octaves have shown up several times along with the GX Bits. The Gunpla World Tournament commercial early on even showed stuff like Crossbone Vanguard Mobile Suits riding in Zanscare Empire Einrads! Dammit Bandai, you should be pumping out kits of these things left and right!

As much as I love Gundam anime and Gundam models, I can't bring myself to watch the gunpla builder series. I even have tried to implement Gundam models into my 40k army lol (BTW is anyone ever made a tabletop game for Gundam, they could have all my money forever) It's like fruit cake to me. The models are awesome, the anime is awesome, but put them together and it's gross. Though I have not seen any of the episodes from the new ones, so maybe I should give it a chance.

Out of interest, does anyone have a favourite OST - either a single song/tune or a whole soundtrack?

Personally, I like the Bleach battle music, but the song played in Kill la Kill when Ryuko throws the beatdown is awesome - sadly, I can't find the whole track on youtube, just a 30-second demo:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdkiD1svfc0

It's awesome with at high volume with the Bass cranked up!

Agreed, Kill la Kill's track is pretty sweet.

I'm rather fond of the Girls und Panzer OST, but it kinda doesn't count, what with all the remixed songs involved.

Ah, The Devil is a Part-Timer! had a pretty cool soundtrack. The karaoke CD was pretty good, too.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica's OST is pretty dramatic and awesome.

And if we're including video games based on anime, I'd say Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle.

There's a long list, but as far as classics go Tenchi had a decent sound track, Outlaw Star's OP was legendary and the rest of the music good (The EPs are some of my favorite music ever), I can't freaking believe none of you have mentioned Cowboy Bebop yet though! Devil Survivor 2: The Animation had a phenomenal sound track... IS the darling of Dakka provides a solid J-Pop soundtrack for those who enjoy that sort of thing, and Bodacious Space Pirates deserves special mention for it's OP, a cross over between a sentai team idol group and a megadeth guitarist.

Yup. It's an OVA about the chapter in the manga where the Hanj and Levi find the journal of a Recon Corps soldier who died outside the walls. Reveals some very interesting things about the Titans and one of the characters in the main show.

It came out on the 9th, I think

Eh. A combination of years of fiction, a lot of Anime, a general understanding of human psychology, storytelling tropes, and Japanese culture. You can tell a ton in most anime by what the characters don't say, or only vaguely allude to- moreso, oftentimes, than through what they do say. It's one of the signature differences of Japanese language, and one of the biggest issues translations have- when an Anime sentence is <went to party>- and makes perfect sense to a native Japanese speaking audience, it's kinda hard to expand that into "(John) went to the party at Jill's house". This is merely an example of the way Japanese shortens and implies meaning instead of stating it- that's also why there's a lot of meaningful glances and soulful looks in Anime dramas- so you really need to pay more attention to the body language and facial expressions (as small and subtle as they may be) to figure out what's happening.

Spoiler:
for example- the samples are clearly bits of Akira- and there's enough of them there to mean that they've got essentially his entire body vivisected. But there's never (afaik) a mention about how Akira died, or a huge amount of surprise at the re-occurence of the Event- shock, awe, yes, but not surprise. Which suggests that everyone "in the know" knew Akira was still alive- yet he's been vivisected! Well, one of the tropes of high-power Psychics is the concept of Astral projection/mind transfer- the mind being separate from the body. This, combined with the shown ability of the Psychic powers to manipulate and effect the biological processes of the body- rampant growth, premature aging- suggests that Akira was never 'killed' but instead the sections and sampling they did with his entire body forced his mind, his Psychic presence, to retreat from his physical being. Akira's clearly the most powerful Talent around- so it's no huge stretch to think that he'd be able to unconsciously keep his cellular activity going, with the specimen containers actually acting to slow and limit the regeneration, rather than keeping the samples alive. And while Akira's not in his own body- well, where do you go when terrible things happen around you, especially when you're a child? You go to your Happy Place- but again, as Akira is such a huge Psychic power, his Happy Place is either another plane of existence- a presumably higher one that he's able to access via his powers- or a completely conceptual astral plane that he's created himself.

The giant exploshpere is just rampant over-telekinesing drawing all matter in the area into a single point- the light is actually the release of energy as all that matter is condensed into a singularity and annihilated into pure energy.

See? Simple!

My mate got me into the Attack on Titan anime and I've really enjoyed it although usually I am not a big anime fan. Its really dark, grim and you feel quite sorry for the characters who have a horrible habit of dying. They even manage to make you feel sympathetic for the villain which I felt was well done in the episode where her identity is revealed. So much tension in that scene and its good that she isn't total villain and sometimes takes mercy on people.

Spoiler:
The only complaints I'd make are that I think they could have maybe had Annie interact with the other team members a little more. I wasn't really sure how Annie had such a close relationship with Armin that she couldn't bring herself to kill him when they only exchange a few lines when she says "You're weak. But you've got guts." But when shes revealed as the female titan she says "I am glad I could be a good person to you Armin". Even with Erin, aside from the boot camp scene she sort of fades into the background and thats such a shame because the female titan arc covers half of the series so you would expect more emphasis to be put on Annies relationship with Erin and Armin. As it stands, it feels like the show wanted her to fade into the background cast and I think given the depth of feelings expressed when its revealed and importance of that arc this was the wrong thing to do. Although the episode from her perspective was very well done and did slightly compensate for that. Also, I have some suspicions about Reiner and Bernalt who are always shown with Annie and being a tight group. If those two are who I think they are then the same criticism applies there. They haven't really interacted with our main trinity since boot camp despite having such a prominent role. I mean if you have time for bread girl, Jean and the rest of the recon characters arcs you probably should put more emphasis on the titan shifters.

Plus, this is probably a genre thing, but its a little bad how characters are introduced to us and we're given just enough to sympathize with them; before being brutally killed/eaten. I think maybe more background talkie episodes to establish these characters would be welcome and less dedicated to fighting (awesome as that is). The ratio seems to be 1 talkie episode to three fighting ones. Although the first major fight is clever because you really think Erin is dead, I don't know how they can keep repeating that as its obvious that main characters won't be dying.

Also the military types talking about the necessity of sacrifice and the greater good. I am okay when Mikasa or Armin say that "life is cruel". But I don't like how so much time is spent having generic characters hammer this into us propaganda style every episode. I'd rather it was solely tied to our characters story arcs.

Do you think in future episodes Annie might become a goodie? Or do you think she would have to die in order to redeem herself? She killed A LOT of people after all.

If people haven't seen the series than theres a link here where you can watch them for free with no downloads.

I tried AOT using that link, but I seriously cannot deal with 3 adverts per episode!
Especially scattered throughout, if it was all at the start, no problem, but just at the big moment of drama... an advert for Calpol for kids? Yeah - that's an "immersion breaker", right there.

Otherwise, seems ok, but as usual, I prefer the team 4 star version

The only way to get AoT in region 4 (legally) is to get it through the horrible madman website. I enjoyed it, but I don't adore it like many outspoken fans.

Spoiler:
It isn't really. Underdeveloped characters can be kind of par of the course, but AoT has an abnormally high body count for a shonen anime. We're talking like 3+ standard deviations removed from the norm here. That said more talking probably wouldn't have helped. The show didn't have the quality writing or ability to stay on tone to carry what talking it did have. It felt like it was drowning every time it sat down and tried to be serious.

No I felt it was okay as went characterization. I just felt you needed more interaction so that I could get to know these characters and for them to hit the emotional beats they were going for. More Annie and Armin in particular because theres very little to suggest they were BFB beforehand but they end up rolling with that.

Spoiler:
A good example of them being nuanced is when Annie helps the group out by killing a titan and saving Connie. Immediately afterwards Reiner teases her that she put herself at risk. At first this seems to be sarcastic as from the boot camp he had always been saying she was a slacker. However, we later find out that he is the armored titan and she is the female titan. So this implies there is actually some tension between the three titan shifters. She was not supposed to break ranks and help the humans they are trying to herd into one place and kill. His previous teasing was mainly because Annie wasn't acting in character by earnestly practicing to become a trainee and being "lazy". Annie expresses this frustration and apathy towards "playing soldier" to Erin though to him and us the viewer this just seems to be a jaded personality. The fact its a correct assessment that our hero takes on board (the best fighters are sent far away from the front) distracts attention from how odd that remark is. Because at this point we don't know people can turn into titans its not as obvious somethings up but when they begin the female titan arc you do think back on these moments and they do back things up. So the show does this sort of stuff fine IMO.

Also, the core cast has remained the same. Erin, Mikasa, Armin and Levi are all still kicking. Even our three principal adversaries are still around as they didn't kill Annie in the final episode but crystallised her. So hope she joins the heroes in the end. But at any rate, its a bit like Game of Thrones where the bit characters and players die but the main ones remain alive for the most part. Plus the most time is still spent on those characters and those who do die are important in as much as they affect our main characters stories.

Plus I understand its based off a manga book series, so I suspect certain things were cut to keep down the number of episodes. I know that there are two scenes not in the Tv show. One where Annie apologises to a body and another where she finds some regurgitated bodies and is sickened by that. So I think thats part of the reason.

Great, now we have death star units in anime as well .

Bad joking aside, when this season ends I will be pretty sad; there was some good anime on.

IS -P.S.
Spoiler:
I know it is late, but... Now, Infinite Stratos has officially abandoned the source material. Cause if I am recalling correctly, none of that happened in the LN. Not even close.

Who was it on here that posted about the new Gundam build fighters? I started watching it, and actually found myself enjoying it lol I think the show is pretty good as an anime, but it is way different from what a Gundam series should be about. Very cartoonish and childlike, something that I always dreaded about some of the series. That's alright though, like I said I still enjoy watching it and reminiscing about all the old models I see from the different series.
My one big beef with the series is that the main character's model is based off of the Strike and not the Freedom : (
Kira Yamato is my dreamboy/man
Anyone else have any male anime crushes?

Yeah, at the end of the episode I remember saying "Well that sucks.".
Spoiler:
At least they could have made Madoka's actions make some sense. Not this "I am going to kill you. I am going to kill you. Your not the one I want to kill, Chifuyu is." Bullgak. It is just stupid. Should have just kept it like in the LN. Every time there is a terrorist attack, you are waiting eagerly to see if Madoka will attack Ichika. They really play off of her mysteriousness by shrouding her plots. Still trying to kill Ichika though.

I actually thought that his new gunpla for the world tournament was not going to be the star build strike, but rather a build based on the Freedom. I like the series (the op is pretty good). I don't mind it being cartoonish and childlike because you almost go into the series expecting it. It is a big deal with that expectation; unlike in AGE, where you were expecting a gundam series and got gundam for kids. I can't really answer your question well because, being a straight man, I have never had a crush on a male character. I can say that Kira Yamato is my favorite gundam pilot (besides Char because .... Char is iconic). I did have a crush on Lacus Clyne at one point, and that might explain my weakness for the pink hair (although silver is quite nice as well).

I watched the first thirdish of the latest vacation episode of IS and then realized I just didn't care about Ichika being put in awkward situation number 253 involving one of the girls who has a crush on him but won't just tell him. All they do is tell the same joke five times every episode, and then maybe give you five minutes of actual plot. The fights and the mechs aren't even all that good to make up for it.

Funny enough I too started watching Gundam this week. I finished episode 5 and I'm loving it so far.

I really like how I can relate myself with the "Modeler": I do my best to build and paint my models with all the care in the world, but I suck when it comes to playing

And the show is doing one heck of a job as an advertisement: It's getting me pumped to finally get a model from my favorite Gundam mech of all time, the humble Zaku II.

Yes, my favorite Mech is the "crappy" Soldier-mass produced mech. I only had a Gundam game for PS2, and you can bet I enjoyed kicking the crap outta Gundams with my faithful Zako

Ya I'd ahve to agree the Zeon has some pretty sweet suits. It's impossible for me to pick a favorite mobile suit from the series, but the Zaku is one of my favorites. I painted most of my crisis suits in their color scheme. GL on building the Zaku! I currently only own the Heavy Arms custom. I repainted it and use it as a proxy the new super crisis suit models they have.

Working my way through Attack on Titan, I'm going to try and avoid being all hipster and uptight here but does anyone else think the entire thing is bit of a metaphor of western-style consumerism?

Like , the titans just consume humans until they can't fit any more in, and then hawk them back up, then carry on eating, apparently ruining things for everyone else just because they can...

On the other hand, I've also started watching Omamori Himari, and all I can say is:

The new Gundam kits for the new show are all modular. They were designed with fully interchangeable parts to customize your own mech. I think some of the weapons/shields/backpacks are also backwards compatible with other Gundam kits. Bandai is really trying to branch out and appeal to the modelers.

I have a riptide that is calling out to be the freedom. I will only use him in apocalypse though (and he will always start in reserves); as the freedom deserves a grand stage to arrive in. Other than that I am planning to have my Farsight Enclaves army be comprised of mechs painted and converted to/from various mechs from various anime. That brings me back to those lovely new gundam kits coming out . It will happen.

So a thought I had during the commute today about Attack on Titan, some individuals have drawn lines to lay the anime out as an attack on rampant consumerism and capitalism. I think that's a stretch. I think it might be an assault on Government and Government Power though. The State in most modern nations is a bland, massive entity that destroys and consumes all it comes into contact with no thought to those it affects, merely it's own power and continued existance. As the power of the government grows, our freedoms shrink in the name of "security", much like the humans in AoT are forced to retreat further into their walls.

Government is not an unstoppable force, though it can feel like it to those of us beneath it's trod, but humans, single individual humans are ever the titan killers.

I got Attack on Titan: Outside for Christmas. There's a lot of great stuff in it, but sadly it's straight from Japan which means I can't do much more than look at the pictures.

Here are some of the gems I found:

With Valvrave and Little Busters refrain ending this week, I will only have Log Horizon and Gundam Build Fighters left going (until Kill la Kill comes back). Winter season doesn't look too shabby; so I am sure my anime schedule will fill up some more. I am just probably going to try the new season anime first before committing (unless someone can convince me that I have to watch 1 before then).

Anyone else watched Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler?)
Apart from the glaring anachronisms and hilarious stereotyping, It's actually quite fun, reminds me of Hellsing, but with 90% less blood and gore, no vampire-Nazis and zeppelins... but much more tea and cake!

Yes. It's a pretty fun show. I like how Sebastian pile drove that demon dog.
The second season was absolute nonsense though. I also have an odd feeling that the writer saw Code Geass. It has something to do with the main character being motivated by hate and having a contract with a supernatural entity that affects his eye, me thinks.

I prefer Hellsing, because that's how vampire fiction should be: lots of blood, gore, and ultra-violence. Unlike this gak.

That's really not selling it.

Watched Gundam: AGE. It was...average and uninspired.
Finally got around to watching Victory Gundam. Very depressing.

Currently watching Venus Vs. Virus. Its entertaining in a shallow, actiony, girls with guns kinda way.

Attack on Titan is next in my list.

It's still pretty gory and messed up. You got doll people, a psychotic angel who fused the queen of england with her dead husband, and a serial killer who
Spoiler:
Can't get pregnant, but got really angry at prostitutes who got an abortion. So she started killing them, and even made a deal with a Grim Reaper (or shinigami, as this is anime) to help her with her slaughter. Oh, and the reaper has a chainsaw, which he uses gleefully.

The Arrancar arc begins at ep110, although it takes a few episodes to pick up speed - I often skipped bits of the episodes from the Bount arc onwards TBH, it saves listening to Orihime whining or Ichigo giving his "I can't lose!" speech again - I basically just watched the fight scenes!

seriously the new seasons started today? But I wanna finish the shows from last season D:

*sigh now I am gonna have a lot of shows to watch. At least I managed to finish most of what I was watching. Shiki and Chaos Head. I had no idea what Shiki meant in Japanese, so I was pleasantly surprised when they unveiled the towns mystery.
Then Chaos Head seemed a little rushed at the end, and was much better at the beginning. I still enjoyed it though. Which one of us doesn't have some female anime figure that we talked to and get advice from?

Not really happy with the abrupt (and totally at odds with the manga) conclusion of Arpeggio. Definitely going to be rebooted Hellsing style if they make another anime, for much the same reasons.

Char Aznable makes for a better role model. Kiritsugu just shoots people to pursue such a flawed concept like 'justice'. Char drops asteroids on Earth to free Humanity's souls from gravity's grip.

I got it through amazon (when searching, try paper knife instead of letter opener) Amazon link.

Oh, and there's the original source, movic, if you can read Japanese (I can't, hence amazon. Should probably learn, so I can read The Devil is a Part-Timer! visual novels.)

Anyone catch SPACE DANDY last night on Adult Swim?

It's the spiritual successor to Cowboy Bebop, VERY similar to CB with the jazz music and gritty science fiction showcase. Even the characters are similar, almost like the director is just re-vamping the series for a new generation in high definition.

I have to say it's pretty funny too, great humor and a metric ton of sexuality. Lots of boobs, butt, boobs, and more boobs. Literally, there's a space station shaped like boobs with enormous lineups of ships waiting to get in to stare at breasts from all races in the galaxy.

Check it out people, you're gonna like it if you enjoyed Bebop (and you should have enjoyed Bebop). By the way, it's not as mature as Bebop in terms of story.

To both KalashnikovMarine and CthuluIsSpy:

Spoiler:
Everytime they showed a GREEN HP Bar, it represented a NPC, hence, Rudy is a People of the Land... one of the guys that can die permanently... which explains the opening Re-watch the start of Ep. 11 to see what I mean: When the diplomatic envoy arrives, a lot of PotL bow before them and their UI show up. All the HP bars are green.

Isuzu is not only Blue, but has "Adventurer" as a class instead of "Bard".

And let's not forget this explains why Rudy had absolutely no idea how to work in a party to clear out a dungeon.

So yeah, unless someone messed up this can be one hell of a twist.

Holy crap, so many new animes! Space Dandy is a given but there's so many others to take a look and see if they are worth it! Let the Winter Season begin!

I wish I could say I figured it all out by myself, but I have to thanks the internet for that I did find the different HP bars very, very strange and I decided to research a bit and found this discussion where they mention how every Green HP bar so far represented a PotL.

Yeah, I understand what you mean, the "Fantasy" realm together with Sci-fi elements like Mechs remembered me of Escaflowne too, but at the same time this first episode scared me. It felt so rushed.

And c'mon, Jeanne KAGUYA d'Arc?

About the other animes, let me tell ya

Tonari no Seki-kun is a "short", the episode is only around 5 mns but let me tell ya, it's freakin' hilarious. 5 awesome minutes. 7, if you count the OP and ED and both are great to boot!

Noragami so far is the best of the bunch so far. Even better than Space Dandy. I laughed so hard with Yato, the voice actor is absolutely brilliant! It's stylish, fun, had good action, had a heart-warming moment, even the OP is fantastic.

Give it a try!

With no research, and just from watching the first episode each of the two shows, they're both shows that are prominently using famous historical names/figures, and being made in japan, use Japan's Nobunaga as their main protagonist.

OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Ya I really liked the backstory they came up with it. The show has had some up and downs for me overall, but I have enjoyed watching it overall. If that twist is true, then just wow!

Started watching Saki (after finishing getting caught up on Golden Time), and man they make mahjong look really fun and the shear amount of yuri is mind-boggling (there are parts were, I swear, the chicks are getting wet over each other).
Waiting for all the winter anime to premiere, and I'll check them out to see what I want to watch.

So I watched Nobunaga the Fool and... uh... guys I think the company that made it may have my 8th grade scratch pad and are using it for ideas, because Oda Nobunaga teaming up with Joan of Arc to conquer Not Earth with giant robots and space ships is just the kind of gak I'd have been writing around that age.

(Joan of Arc and Oda Nobunaga have always been some of my favorite historical personages)

Wow, the secretary with green hair who's never around when the Thief with green hair shows up was the Thief. Who knew.

I do like that in The Familiar of Zero, Saito earns his whippings by being an idiot, whereas generally the male protagonist is just an idiot.

Also, I looked into the history of the dub, and wow, that is a mess. I didn't even know there was one (Sentai to the rescue again, it seems.) Guess I better check it out.

...Louise is voiced by Mio and the Princess by Ritsu? Sold.

I watched some of the premiers today. So far I really like

Space Dandy
Hamatora
Noragami

I tried out Nobunaga the fool. The art looks pretty cool, its got robots and samurai and gundams. I'm still iffy about it. Now to just wait for Magical Warfare and Z/X: Ignition

So I watched a couple different ones today. Hamatora is pretty cool, but I think I'm in love with Nobunagun (gak yes, second Oda Nobunaga related anime in the season? My inner fan boy is dancing... and burning a few villages down) I mean hell the female lead is a fellow weapon geek for one!

Even better then that (so far) is Witch Craft Works, which I am enjoy a whole hell of a bunch, the messing with gender roles is just the icing on a fun, action packed incendiary cake.

Tonari No Seki-kun and The Pilot's Love Song seem pretty good so far too!

....gak.

I just realized how much HASN'T debuted yet.

I apparently need to quit my job and just watch anime this season.

So far I'm not especially enamored with this season's stuff. I think there's only 3 mecha shows. I did like what I saw of Nobunaga the Fool, though what was up with the sci-fantasy versions of them dreaming about their historical counterparts? That was odd.

Buddy Complex has the potential to be interesting. I'm loving the mecha designs for it though. It has a very early 90s feel to them. They remind me of stuff out of Victory Gundam or Xenogears. So naturally I'm sure we won't get any model kits or toys. :(

Gundam continues to tease me with things that don't have models and probably never will.

Aside from those, I'm not seeing much I care for. So I've been on a bit of an old school binge and got all of the original Casshern anime and all of Armored Trooper Votoms. Great stuff.

I hadn't seen it before now, but Casshern is dark as hell, even by today's standards.

feth YES, THURSDAYS!

EDIT: HOOOOOOOOLY gak! This week's KLK episode raised the bar to a whole new level! This was outrageously good! I want to meet the authors, give them a manly hug and pay them a beer for making such a fantastic show!

Seconded.

Spoiler:
Satsuki deliberately let Ryuko keep a scrap of Senketsu, I know it. Also, Ira having Mako join the trip... hmm...

I also liked how the areas with lower share holdings by REVOCS was due to low population density. Added a bit of realism, if that makes any sense.

Steampunk Anime... I'm not sure, really. You'd think that Japan would be all over a Genre that has the potential for crazy awesome that Steampunk has. But there's also a few that are kinda/sorta steampunk.

I've heard TurnA Gundam is supposedly kinda steampunk, and I guess it is at least in aesthetics. There's also Last Exile which is kinda Steampunk, but honestly more Dieselpunk with Napoleanic overtones. A lot of Miyazaki movies are somewhat steampunk as well- Castle in the Sky, for example, though of course with a heavily Japanese aesthetic, as opposed to the more Western Europe-centered theme we think of as Steampunk.

There's more offerings in Manga and graphic novels as well as webcomics and web serials and dead-tree format stuff. The comic Steampunk is one of the originals- there's Steampunk themed Transformers comics, Girl Genius is THE Quintessential steampunk webcomic- The Flying Cloud is a great steampunk/lovecrafian webnovel- Clockworks, the Amazing Screw On Head, Moorlock Nights... Tons of stuff out there, but very little that's all in the same genre or the same universe.

Thanks for the input, I think I'll go check out Last Exile. I've watched Turn A before though, so I'll leave that off for now. The ending is kinda bittersweet, and I'd rather not get depressed right now.

After reading the discussion in reddit and MAL I realize I'm a very small minority: I absolutely love Nui. She's the master-troll of the show, she trolls with a smile, she destroyed our MC, she's dangerous enough to make Satsuki enter serious mode, good heavens, I honestly hope she plays an even bigger role in the future.

Maybe she'll be the "final boss" instead of the Dragon, maybe not, but I honestly hope she stays until near the end. The ammount of twists she created so far have been delicious.

I thought the stuff on crunchyroll was censored. I've just gotten back from holiday so I spent last night watching 8 or so first episodes. Space dandy was the most disappointing. Lots of critics don't seem to like magical warfare but I found it ok. Their seems to be relative gender balance so far which is good if your not super into that kinda thing like me and the guy already has a gf so I don't know how he would get away with other girls jumping on him.

Hi guys, anime newbie here. I've recently started watching anime, and it's a great way to spend a lazy Sunday evening. So far, my friends have let me borrow their Mobile Suit Gundam and Ghost in the Shell series. I've also watched Full Metal Panic.

Of course, now I'm hooked. I'm thinking the next series I'm going to watch is Cowboy Bebop, but after that I'm sort of stuck. I really prefer sci-fi anime. Does anyone have any good recommendations. I'm not too interested in getting into the super long series like Naruto or One Piece. Basically, I want to wade through the classics of the sci-fi anime genre.

Thoughts?

Basically some humans find an ancient super weapon, fight off alien attacks, and other than that I'll simply point out that the series was made by 'Kill em All' Tomino (same guy who made Mobile Suit Gundam). It is a classic of the mecha genre (an early spiritual ancestor to the later Neon Genesis Evangelion). If you want the classics you need to see Ideon.

There's also of course Macross/Robotech, and Space Battleship Yamato which recently got an OVA remake. Other good options are Neon Genesis Evangelion and Patlabor. All classics.

Good series to watch are in Sci-Fi (a lot of Japanese scifi will blend with other genres);
-Psycho-Pass
-Code Geass
-Tenchi Muyo!
-Nausica of the Valley of the Wind (film)
-Full Metal Panic
-Big O
-Eureka Seven

You also might like Fullmetal Alchemist, not scifi really, but its a series I think most Americans can enjoy.

Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop are some of the legend grade of the Sci Fi end of anime. If you like a little comedy with your sci-fi/fantasy then Tenchi Muyo's always a good watch.

Outlaw Star: A wild crew of characters sets out into the Galaxy to find enough money to make ends meet while searching for a legendary treasure. In the mean time they're going to have to deal with pirates, bounty hunters and everything else the universe can throw at them.

Cowboy Bepop: You're already planning to watch it. Just do it.

Mobile Suit Gundam: 8th MS Team, Gundam gone hardcore, except for the giant robots it has slightly less scifi elements then the other Gundam series, but it makes up for it with bad ass giant robot action and a compelling plot.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Buckle in and hold on to your butt because this is it, the defining anime classic of mindfethery.

Planetes: More working class Sci-Fi this near future space story focuses on a crew of LEO garbagemen working for one of the large space based corporations in the near future.

Appleseed: It's a movie and it's very much in the vein of Ghost In the Shell.

Psycho Pass: Think Minority Report's concept with a side order of Cyber Punk, Ghost In the Shell and Dexter. It's a bit more complex then that of course, but the show's phenomenal and one of my recent faves.

Bodacious Space Pirates: Back to the cute and comedy, with almost no fanservice at all (seriously, I was shocked) Bodacious Space Pirates follows a high school girl who finds out that on the death of the last captain, her absentee father, she's inherited command of a crew of space pirates.

Flag: Back down to Earth where a U.N. special forces unit has deployed to a destabilized nation undergoing a religiously motivated military insurrection, this powerful anime is told mostly through the camera lens of an embedded photographer. It's extremely compelling and tackles some serious issues head on. Bring a cup of coffee, a sounding board and some tissues.

and finally,

Macross Frontier: The latest in the venerable Macross series Macross Frontier follows an elite team of mercenary pilots as they head across the galaxy with one of humanity's colonization fleets. Giant robots, solid plot, compelling characters, cute girls, and a sound track you really cannot download fast enough.

Meanwhile on a completely different note, the JSDF has figured out how to weaponize Moe.

Its cool to see Psycho-pass being placed so high on the good sci-fi lists. It could end up as quite the classic series in 30 years itself. I would add Stiens Gate to the list too. Its not really sci-fi (as in a space adventure) like the others you mentioned but it is very good and seems to be enjoyed by anyone that is a sci-fi fan.

Handled well I think it'll easily become a classic.

Supposed to be coming out this year. Probably the movie 1st followed by the 2nd season. I wish I had a solid time frame for you. The GuP movie is supposed to be this year also.

Happy, happy, happy, this makes me very happy. A movie sounds perfect and I'm damn curious to see how the girls would like in 15mm. I wouldn't mind giving FoW a try with some 15mm schoolgirls

So, did anyone see the first episode of Wizard Barristers? Let me tell you, as someone who bought a DS almost exclusively for the Phoenix Wright series, an anime that joins together Lawyers + Magic + Mechs (HELL YES, MAGIC) + ARMS studio (aka, well animated T&A) makes me a very happy person!

Zeta and Victory Gundam, probably the darkest Gundam anime ever to be produced. Heck, Victory Gundam may not be as mind screwing as NGE, but its much, MUCH darker.

Actually it's three movies and a short OVA. And since the original manga was written by Shirow before he did GitS, it's not surprising the two have some common themes.

I'd also recommend Toonami favorite Blue Submarine #6 (though it's best to watch unedited), the manga was a classic, the anime... not bad.

These contain Fanservice but are scifi:

Dirty Pair (sci-fi comedy, somewhat fanservicy in all incarnations, [Flash surprisingly having the least] but has a lot of good scifi in it)

Asobi ni Iku Yo! (Most fanservice I have ever seen in an non-fantasy anime)

Cutey Honey (any version over the years, though Re Cutey Honey is the newest one and is very short. Caution contains staggering fanservice though)

FLCL (brace yourself for this one. Eva is a massive mindscrew, but this one tries to ramp the crazy up to 11. Sufficiently Advanced Alien Tech is not good for people who already apparently have SERIOUS issues.)

These have less or no fanservice:
Gunnm (AKA Battle Angel)

Bubblegum Crisis (any of them)

Note Quite Sci-fi but would probably be enjoyable to you:

Black Lagoon.

Among newer stuff a lot of people liked Girls und Panzer.

Kite has been made into a live action movie by Americans.

On the upside, Samuel L Jackson. On the Downside, unless the director is Luc Besson, this is doomed from the get-go.

In today's Gundam Build Fighters, it just got real. Very exciting episode that definitely got a certain emotional response from me:
Spoiler:
Rage. I wanted to punch that whiny-a$$, director's face, so bad. Then, my boy Reiji (definitely something going down between him and Aina....but wont happen) goes busting in his room at the end of the episode. Gak just got real, fast.

Started watching Asura Crying too.

Not quite; Rei being meant to be a deconstruction of an ideal girl backfired spectacularly, seeing as she's a very popular character.

I concede the point.

EDIT: TTGL could also be considered a remake of NGE. Both of them had the same basic idea, except TTGL went the other way. Where in NGE overwhelming crises led to despair, in TTGL, it led to the determination to go beyond the impossible.

The ending was kinda bittersweet, although it drove home the fact that freedom has to paid for, and that war always has casualties. Nia dying in the end (and almost the entirety of Team Da-Gurren during the battles against the Anti-Spiral) was definitely something I never expected from TTGL, and seems a bit of a shout-out to other anime with dark and heroic themes like Zeta and Victory Gundam.

Escaflowne wasn't bittersweet. It was implied in the ending - she could see Gaea from Earth which is normally not possible - that she could travel to Gaea whenever she wanted.

One of the reasons I don't care for the movie versions of Gurren as much as the series was pretty much no one died. It really diminished the double spiral speech.

Meh, they aren't exactly doing much harm hugging a pillow: The extremes shouldn't be shunned if they aren't harming anyone. If people find it creepy, well, it's their problem.

Once they start directly bothering people, then that's another story.

Any mans own taste is fine taste to them! I am enjoying Log horizon, chinobou, and noragami too. They all seem to be great so far leaving me wanting more.

Well, on today's plane trip back to Europe's Canada I finished Angel Beats! A friend of mine advised me to watch it and I honestly have no idea how in hell he enjoyed this anime. He only likes action-packed anime and this one pretty much only had the following moments:
- Hilarious as feth
- Depressive as feth
- Heart-warming as feth.

It's only 13 episodes and I'm sure I cried at least once in over half of them, either because of a depressive as feth or major heart-warming moment.

So yeah, with that out of the way, I also started (finally) watching Puella Magi Madoka Magica to see what the hype is all about and because of all the fame, I already know it enters full GRIMDARK pretty soon. Only saw the first 2 eps and I think it enters full GRIMDARK in ep3.

P.S: For those who watched Space Dandy, ... Mamitas is something like "Little Boobs" in portuguese

I don't think I mentioned it, but recently I tore through the entire season of Binbougami ga! (Good Luck Girl!) and it's freaking awesome! It gets extra credit points for introducing me to the artist Piko, not only does Piko have an official Vevo account (rare enough to be excited for alone) but you can legitimately acquire a best of album from Amazon's MP3 downloads section!

(it's well worth looking up the full length version of Make My Day)

What did you guys think of Rinne no Lagrange? I just finished Season 1, it seemed pretty good.

Ok for the Kill la Kill crew, I just gotta say Harime Nui is one seriously bad ass character.

She's cute, seemingly harmless and absolutely cheerful and loving - yet all this masks a major sociopath who is easily one of the most skilled in the series at fighting. She downs three-stars like they're no-stars and isn't even wearing a uniform. She's also an expert at infiltration and disguise. Grand Couturier indeed!

Even though she's obviously a major villain, I really hope they don't off her. She needs her own series, actually. Harime fanboy here!

Spoiler:
When she first pulls out the other half of the scissor blade, and she spins it around and shows off hard, I shouted in real life. Such a wicked scene.

I enjoyed it. It was a good change of pace anime (from all the action/adventure I had been watching).

I'm about to watch what I assume will be a fest of fanservice (as it touts itself as 'uncensored') in the form of Freezing: Vibration.

It's pretty inspired of the crawling chaos. I mean, seriously, if you want to manipulate Japan, a 'moebomination' is probably the best way to go....

Well, he is the most adaptable of the Outer Gods. Guy's been everywhere

Yeah, considering how much time he shows when compared to Cthulhu, it really should be called Nyarlthotep Mythos.... and at least he isn't put to sleep when he gets hit by a small boat...

So yeah, I have to say, Kill la Kill didn't have the same hype impact it had last week, but boy was it frenetic. I couldn't believe how those 20mns flew and

Spoiler:
With 3 different battles at the same time

A retrieval quest

Mako being Mako

This must have been one of the most frenetic episodes I have watched in a long time . My only complaint was the lack of Nui!

EDIT: so yeah, watched the first ep of Haiyore! nyaruko-san, and oh my, I will never look at the Cthulhu Mythos the same way Nyarlthotep is hilarious and it's a pretty funny show for Lovecraft fans and others. And it's filled with sooooo many references. Eck, everytime she's hit she shouts a gundam name

But she can be pretty messy too

Yeah I saw this. At first I went a harem of Lovecraft? Huh? NYAR (he's my favorite )!? Huh? No, can't that's just plain weird. *30 minutes later* Huh. Also break the sanity bar break it DO IT!

Its not a harum. That would imply they all wanted the boring male lead. Its a pentagon of relationship which only grows into a hexagon and then bigger again in season 2 and I must say it takes nothing away from the show at all.

That was probably the best moment! Well okay fine no to me the best moment was when he imagines all of its/her (I'm really not sure what I should be using here!) and is freaking out. The dude is fething Lovecraftian savvy that's for sure. He really probably needs to stop playing a certain few games inspired by Lovecraft's writings . But yeah, I was like a harem of lovecraft.... huh. Then the first few minutes real in and they instantly make it into like a romance of.....

seriously what exactly would you even call this?

I have already watched the whole season. It really has a lot of fan-service. Wait for about episode 7/8; it gets a bit intense and explicit in that area for a while (not as bad as the manga though).

Watched episode 15 of Gundam Build Fighters; what a battle that was. I hope the rest of the series will keep up at this pace because right now it is pretty exciting.

Another brother who saw the light! *BRO-FIST* Nui FTW! I hope she stays until the very end.

Yeah, the anime already had some very good battles, but this one, damn, now this was some awesome Gundam action, nevermind they are "just" Gunpla.

Spoiler:
When they lose their swords and just go at it with their fists until the bitter end, I know it's a "classic" move, but I freakin' love to see when this happens with mechs.

Finished watching it. I hate the fact that series are 13 eps anymore. I miss Slayers 26 ep seasons.

Freezing: Vibration is in fact, a fanservice fest (as anticipated) but does mostly follow the manga, with some notable changes toward the end. I'm guessing they suddenly decided not to make a season 3 or there was a schedule slip in the manga during production.

So after someone posted the Highschool DxD AMV thing here I checked out the anime.

Ended up watching that season AND the New season.

The uncensored fan service is ridiculous but I feel it's genius, because there's actually some interesting plot going on here but we keep getting dragged into the comedy because Issei won't shut up about boobs, even in the middle of major fights.
