>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hello and Welcome to my Mekshop <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
This blog will be mostly focused on painting and converting Orks but I do have the odd tendency to do something different, e.g. Blood Angles/Knights Sanguine (Custom Chapter) or Tanith models.
Why I chose to create this blog was to keep a recorder of all the things I've done as well as give people the opportunity to actually see my creations, otherwise they would just sit in a dark cabinet in my garage. :( Also I've been meaning to do this for ages and with the renewed interest in Orks due to their new Codex and model releases for "Orktober" it seemed like a perfect excuse to finally take the plunge into a blog.
I have looked at countless blogs in the past and taken ideas from them when trying to do my own work. With this blog I also want to give back to the hobby community in some way. I really do hope that people come here to look at my work and take something away, copy something I've done and put their own spin on it or try an idea of their own. As long as you are enjoying the hobby and having fun doesn't really matter what you do.
Thanks for looking.
Latest Update Over the next few days and weeks I'll be updating this blog to catch up with my work from the last few years. Hope you like it.
Dakka (Unofficial) Painting Challenge Every month Paradigm runs a different Painting challenge in the Painting & Modeling section of the forums with a vote on the entries at the end of the month. Its been going over 3 and a half years now and is really the whole reason I got back into painting and have stayed doing it for so long. There are some really talented and supportive people that regularly take part in the challenge, everyone one and every ability is welcome. Its about getting people painting and staying motivated . There is a league table as well if you enjoy the competition side of things or want to see how you have improved over the months. I strongly recommend checking it out and entering some models.
The Name Midget Gems and its history Why the name Midget Gems? Midget Gems are a UK gummy sweet originally made by Lions. I do like them but not my favourite sweet of all time. This name started as a bit of a family name, It as followed me through all my online activities. Both my Dad (Ironworks Forums for Baldurs Gate) and brother have used it for their online games as well. I started using it when I was around 12 and still had a good old 56k Dial up Modem, I first used it when playing the original Delta Force online, which I look back on fondly. Next it was my online name for Counter Strike (manly on the UKCS servers). Then I transitioned to Lord of the Rings Online, Guild Wars then Guild Wars 2 for several years as well as several other games in-between but not for long. Chances are if you have seen someone called Midget Gems in these games or similar FPS, MMPOGs it was probably me (as long as their were semi decent at the game, if not it wasn't me )
First involvement with Games and a brief history with them:
1987 - 2005 Since a young age I have always been interested in historical and fantasy warfare. My first memories of computer gaming where pestering my Dad to play his Dragon Computer, one of the first home PCs/consoles made in Wales (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_32/64). Fast forward a few years to a 10 year old me at Christmas getting a Box of very interesting things called "Warhammer Quest". Me and my brother loved playing that game and developing characters as we progressed. We then started to collect Fantasy Armies I went for Orcs and my Brother, Dark Elves. After a few years this then expanded to 40k were I carried on my Orkish tradition and my Brother went for Blood Angels. We liked to set up and play games of either type but rarely finished a full game and also cheated quite a bit since we didn't really understand the rules . Then around 13 - 14 years old we got ourselves a copy of Mordheim, probably my favourite game to date. I loved playing campaigns and dragging our warbands through the city with missing eyes and limbs. At this age some of our friends started to give up wargaming we either got their armies for free or at a very reduced price so our collection expanded very quickly. (I still have all these models 15 years later, they need stripping - its on the to do list!). I then started to lose interest in the hobby from 15 onwards but still played the odd game during School summer holidays or xmas break. I was generally playing Football at weekends and RPGs and FPS on the PC like Baldurs Gate, Delta Force, Final Fantasy 7 in my spare time, which gave me my required dose of Fantasy and Warfare each week.
2005 - 2008 Another jump forward to a 19 year old me leaving home to start a 3 year electronics apprenticeship. We played many LAN games in the evenings and weekends when there was nothing else to do. In the second year of this apprenticeship while living in a flat with 5 other apprentices we started discussing Warhammer, 3 of us ending up buying a few boxes of troops and starting a Mordheim Campaign which I was very happy about. We also started our first MMO together with Lord of the Rings Online which was great fun if not a bit frustrating at times due to the unreliability of our internet connection.
2008 - 2011 Once the apprenticeship finished I moved into a flat with 1 other apprentice (who later became by best man). I played a lot of online games in the 3 years at that flat and started painting again just for something different to do. I was going away with work a lot for weeks at a time, I brought a few models and some paints with me then so I had something to do in the hotel rooms.
2011 - 2013 In 2010 I met my future wife My flatmate moved out to live with his now wife and I also moved out to live with mine. She lived in a new build block of flats and after a little while we got to know a few people who where interested in board games so we occasionally got together to play things like ...... I convince 2 of them to play a game of Mordheim but sadly we moved out of the flat into our house after only 1 or 2 games. I went crazy on e-bay and bought a load of stuff that we could use but most of it didn't get a chance to be used for whatever scenarios I can planned. e.g. 40 dire wolves for a survive the horde pack type event.
2013 - Now I got married and moved into a new house in 2013. I spent most of my free time over the next 2 years doing DIY and making the place liveable just in time for our First child (there was a lot of work to do) Once I had finished the main work on the house I started looking for something to do and be creative with. An ex-apprentice friend introduced me to a painting challenge on the Dakka Dakka Forums and I've been doing one every month for the last 3+ years
and thats me for now
First Post here we go, its quiet nice looking back and seeing you have improved, which I think I have from this 1st model.
Ork Quad bike
This Ork Quad bike was the first model I tried converting since getting back into the hobby in May 2015. I followed a blog on Dakka Dakka (Link) for a while and the creator, wazzoo2000, did some really excellent conversions. He also posted some tutorials on how to make his stuff which is where this model/idea came from. Unfortunately all his photos got deleted by accident, but he has recently started posting videos again which is great because he really does some fantastic conversions.
At the same time a good friend of mine started doing painting challenges on Dakka and encouraged me to join in, which I did with this model. It was a very nervous time since I knew I wasn't very good at painting and having people judge my work was a terrifying prospect.
The Quad bike is a converted Deffkopta with wheels from Zinge Industries and some Plasticard armour plates.
lol Chris the Ork Z-wing will definitely be coming later, I'll let each entry sit for a couple of days and update the Blog Title
Thank you Zerg and SuspiciousSucculent, I do like doing conversions and having a completely unique model at the end of it.
Orc Warboss "Skarteef" on a Rhinox
This was my first real conversion from my own mind. I even gave him a name (Skarteef) and a bit of fluff.
The Warboss is made up of an Orc Warboss body and boar rider legs with a Black Orc Banner/explosive pole, a Big Shoota and a snotling helper . I also heated up a metal snake in the oven to try and bend it around the Warboss's waist as a sort of snake belt. He is mounted on a Rhinox with a bike wheel cover as a jaw and chain reigns.
I got a total of 9 votes (again) putting me in 13th place out of 32 entries. I was again very happy I got any votes.
Finished Warboss
Fluff (Gets a bit weird)
Spoiler:
Skarteef is from the planet of Shillion in the Segmentum Ultimus. As a young nob, Skarteef choose to prove himself to the other nobs of the tribe by going on a hunt for a well known, dangerous wild boar with just his huge choppa, no shooty stuff. He tracked the boar down and charged the beast. After a close fight he emerged victorious but missing the whole of his lower jaw. Upon his return to the camp he was turned away from the docs for not having any teeth to pay. After knocking out the doc and taking his teeth he paid the tribes mad doc to attach the boar's tusks to a new metal jaw.
The local PDF became aware of the small Ork camp and sent several squads of guardsmen backed up by a Leman Russ to destroy them, the fight was going badly for the Orks until Skarteef charged the tank with several found stikkbombs attached to a log. The resulting explosion threw the Ork back several dozen feet but destroyed the tank. After this mighty feat the battle was won and Skarteef rose to become the new Warboss. He was given the nickname "Skarteef, the Monstrous" after the local town discovered he had stolen a pole from an important Zebra crossing for the local school to create a new and improved stikkbomb lance.
After becoming Warboss, Skarteef moved his tribe closer to the nearest big human settlement to hunt "umies. After several raids the locals paid a Ogryn bounty hunter to remove the Ork. Skarteef saw the Ogryn on the next raid and charged wanting the glory of the kill for himself. The Ogryn was a good fight and cost Skarteef his right eye but luckily he had another one, he flayed the Ogryns skin and now has it proudly displayed atop his Rhinox "Thunderstomp".
Thunderstomp is the biggest Rhinox on the planet of Shillon which lead Skarteef to track and capture the beast as his war mount. The snakes in the tribes new hunting area proved to be disappointingly poisonous so he had some really dangerous ones collected from their old camp and now wears then round his waist to keep his poison levels up.
I got a few chapters of the 1st Gaunt's Ghosts book free as a promotion. I got quite into it so bought several of the books and loved reading them. I had recently placed an order with Victoria Miniatures for some of their Border World Rangers models and cloaks to build a unit of Tanith. When the Sneaky topic came up I thought it was perfect for a Tanith Sniper to support that unit. He is made up of Cadian legs and Border World Rangers torso, cloak arms and head. The sniper rifle is something I had in my bits box. I liked how the base came out.
Thanks The Riddle of Steel, there's quite a few more Orky conversions to come over the next few weeks and I've just ordered the Speedfreaks box so will hopefully be able to do something interesting with those models
One of my first full conversions and also my 1st attempt at painting Yellow (who knew it would be so hard!)
The model was an ebay purchase/rescue which was a bit of a mess when I bought it. A bit of cutting, greenstuff and some extra bits and it started to look better The flames on the buzz saw came out well, other flames didn't and I also decided after taking these pictures I really need to improve my photography.
I enjoyed turning something "preloved" that was a bit of a mess into something at least semi decent and recognisable.
Cheers CB, yeah got to keep going for "Orktober". I noticed you had been doing some nice stuff on your Blog for it as well
Ork Star Wars - Han Solork and Chewborka
Next up is a fun one just in time for Halloween and Fancy Dress
I was struggling to work out what to do for this challenge then remember a MEME I had seen with Hans Solo in it:
That sorted out the entry but the next question was how to do it. After sorting through various bits the best I could find for the Chewbacca model was a Savage orc and an ork bikers torso for Hans. Some Green stuff (this was my first ever attempt and modelling with greenstuff) later they both had Hair/Fur. The pistol is from Zinge industries and the crossbow is a fantasy one from my bits box with a scope on it. Oddly not the last time I would attempt to make an Ork model of a Harrison Ford character lol
Whooo The Speedfreaks boxed set arrived this morning. Ive been really getting into the Ork releases so been looking forward to this and if they don't turn out to be good on the battlefield it does means at the least there's some new bits for the Mekshop
Some Pics, if anyone wants me to take any more of anything specific just let me know.
Since I enjoy the previous months modelling so much I decided to continue the Star Wars Ork theme with an Ork and Grot dressed up as R2D2 and Yoda for Halloween.
When I came to painting the Lightsaber for Yoda that proved a bit beyond my skill and understanding of how to paint essentially a long round Light. I did try wet Blending for the first time on the lightsaber and it came out reasonably well, but doesn't look like a lightsaber.
I had the idea to cut open a glow stick and paint the luminous filling on to make them more Ghoulish. This worked to a degree but the luminous liquid started to react with the paint and left it damaged, I managed to get photos before that happened but still annoying, so I don't recommend doing that.
Thanks CommissarKhaine, Theres quite a few more interesting entries still to come
Highlander Ork - Conork Mccloud
For this entry I wanted to keep going with Greenstuff work and try a slightly more complex sculpt, So after watching the Video that inspired this months topic by Queen which was the soundtrack to the film Highlander (Link). The music video peaked my interest and I watched the movie, it was on my list of cult films to eventually watch but this was a good reason to do it. After watching I decided an Ork highlander complete with sword and trench coat would fit the theme and give me a bit of a challenge.
I carved the Katana out of Plasticard, trying to ensure it had the slight curve to the blade and looked like it had a cutting edge.
November 2015 - Princes of the Universe!
Great ideas CommissarKhaine, Think I might have to get 2 or 3 now
I hadn't thought that far ahead but yeah the Warboss would certainly fit into/onto some interesting vehicles, time for a google session and to update my ideas book I think
A Dakkanaught called KB_Lock had an idea to try and create a Worldwide "Dakka" Ork Clan by sending Orks out to various people for them to paint, modify and then return to him. Its a long running project with all the logistical nightmares you can expect when sending dozens of figures out to random people cross the planet and hoping they return them.
You can find the thread here:
https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/blog/0/656634.page I really liked the idea so sign up for 1 of the original boys and donated 1 of my own for company on the journey. Some minor conversions to make them look less like AOBR boyz and they where done.
Thanks for your comments CommissarKhaine, nice to know someone is watching this
Yep, a savage ork sword and also a Nid pad, the other one is trying to be cool and hold his weapons at jaunty angles . With the AOBR boyz I always like to add a least a little something extra so they don't look like all the others I've seen hundreds of times.
No idea what happened to these boyz in the end and if they ever made it to join the Waaagh! Might have got lost in the Warp.
Nevelon wrote: That was a fun project. I wonder as well what become of the poor boy I sent off to join the great Waaaagh.
As long as their happy thats all I care about
I'm doing the next few posts out of order because I wanted to save the Ork Santa I did until Dec and figured it would wait 2 weeks, I'm also very proud of it so wanted to give it a good write up
Blood Angels Terminator, Brother Claudio from Space Hulk
The majority of my entries had been Ork related so I decide to go for a Space Hulk Character as a change since it fitted the theme of close combat related. I really liked the models from the Space Hulk box so was something I was looking forward to. It was my first time in about 10 years painting a SM I don't think I did the model justice but I learnt something about paint red, painting flat armoured surfaces and highlighting them which I put to use in the future.
Blood Angels Terminator, Sgt. Lorenzo from Spacehulk
I quite enjoyed painting Brother Claudio last month and do really like the models for the space hulk box so found a way to combine another model from that box with the competition topic of "size matters not" I also felt I could improve on the painting from last month. My justification was "size matters not" if your not wearing a helmet even a Snotling can bash your head in.
The Face came out well and the armour looks a bit better with more prominent edge highlights but the lightning on the sword could be much better.
Cheers Nev and CommissarKhaine, I do like to have a bit of fun with my models and if I can add a Snotling or Grot into the model somewhere I will
Ork Deathskulls Looted Rhino
This model is not one I submitted to any painting challenge (which is rare). I just wanted to have a play about with converting and looting a Rhino, it was quite a fun project to do and think about. I was able to try a few things I'd not done before e.g. magnetising part of it, painting rust, Greenstuff for the seats. Rhinos seem a bit too small to carry 12 Boyz so when I looted it I cut it in half and put a spacer panel + some front doors in to make it wider I also added in some seating and a Grot .
The gunner and Big Shoota are magnetised so they can move around and come off for transport.
I think I went a bit OTT on the rust effect and a lot of the painting could be better but in the end its acceptable how it turned out and a good record of were I was painting skill wise at that time (Late 2015)
Part 1: The construction Photos (part 2 will have the Painting)
That rhino definitely adresses the 'tiny vehicle syndrome' model vehicles tend to have. I'd suggest cleaning up and distressing the plasticard panelling, but I'm going to assume you did that since it's already painted . Lovely glyph on the side btw!

Thanks CommissarK, Yeah the Glyph did turn out quite well I drew it on paper, then when happy transferred it to very thin plasticard, then used that as a template for the thicker plasticiard, no mistaking who owns this vehicle It didn't distress the panels but looking at some of your work I think its something I will definitely be doing in the future
Ork Deathskulls Looted Rhino As promised here are the painting WIP and final pics
Slightly out of sink but thought I'd post my latest entry in the unofficial Dakka painting challenge, an Evil Sunz Deffkilla Wartrike
I can see an improvement in my painting between the last vehicle and this one so a bonus from the last 3 years of painting
Its not completely finished and the base isn't great (and the wrong size). I underestimated the amount of time it would take and the amount of time I had this month so only just managed to get in mostly done in time. Enjoy
Now how on earth hadn't I found this yet?!...there's even that nice big banner in your sig and everything! ...Well, I'm following it now at least
...just had a good meander through what you've posted here so far...a few things I hadn't seen before, and am glad I now have, and a few things I had seen before, but am glad to see again...and of course, the depth of character you always manage to work into all your fun novelty conversions is always impressive
Those two lates models look brilliant! I feel your weathering has a similar effect as distressing the panels, so distressing them beforehand could really add to the 3d-effect of your painting (if that makes any sense).
Cheers all, I was hoping to add a few bits that people hadn't seen before or add some extra info to what I've already done. With this post I'm up to March 2016 and I'd say the best is yet to come
The latest challenge voting thread is up so get your votes in!
I had a fun idea for this months (March 2016) challenge and wanted to combine my recent SM painting with my love of all things converted and Orky. Introducing Grot Marine! I put some effort into the conversion so it didn't seem like I'd just stuck a grots head on a SM body. A few days of planning and trying out different bits I came up with the best pieces to fit together. I hollowed out the arm and thigh cavities with a dremel tool trying not to melt the plastic and then fine tuned it with some small files. The legs didn't look great in the end since I reused a old part that already had paint on and lost a lot of detail.
Do you know, there used to be a store owner in Vancouver who built an entire army of Space Goblins in the original Rogue Trader marines. Although is were not so well equipped.
Sounds like a cool but time dedicated army CB, Do you know if there are any pics of it online?
Lol amazingturtles, hes a leader amongst Grots
This week has been stupidly busy, drived 1300 miles on top of my normal working day so not much time for anything including updating blogs but now its the weekend so I have a bit of time.
Ork Santa and Flying Sleigh WIP
Since Xmas is almost upon us I thought I'd share this project with you. At the time (Dec 2015) it was my biggest Project to Date, It's also still one of my favourites. I put a hell of a lot of effort into this and much more time than I was expecting. I think I estimated it at around 80 - 100 hours to finish it. (and thats without a base which I wanted to do as a ruined house with a chimney)
It was loads of fun to make and to think about all the little bits.
First post is the building WIPs and second one with have the painting
The next instalment, I didn't take to many Painting WIPs as I was really worried/focused on painting it in time. Hope you enjoy it the finished model.
Ork Santa and Flying Sleigh
Cheers tzurk, yeah it all came together quite well in the end, I always try to go out of my way to add those little bits of extra detail since I think they add so much even if you don't notice them at first
Just putting together the next Xmas Ork Santa related post so there will be a few more Ork Santas before xmas
This time I wanted to do Santa sitting down handing out presents, Finding a 40k scale size armchair was pretty difficult but I found this chair and stone surround as a random buy on e-bay, repainted it didn't look too bad. It was quite hard to get Santa to sit so he's a bit perched with ammo boxes to to support his little feet rather than let them dangle. For a fun idea I have the grot elves Cork Guns
Thanks Ruglud, I had a very good xmas (well the little ones did anyway) Hope you did as well
Since its still the season for this sort of thing how about a nice Grot Christmas choir to finish the year off
Grot Christmas Choir service
I tried quite a few new things on this entry, Woodland Scenics Water for the pond, and their snow for the snow, also my first entry with LEDs in the lamp posts another fun little xmas scene, hope you like it
For the final Christmas themed entry we have "How the Grots Stole Christmas" my latest one and just completed the other day.
I liked how the posters came out, especially the "wanted" one and the scene in general. I ran out of time to get all the detail and highlights done. would have liked to add a few extra bits to the base and the sack on the sleigh could be a lot better. Any suggestions as to what else I could add to it?
Yeah the doom diver bits where perfect when I saw them in my bits box, took me a while to imagine the whole idea from that. The poster are about as small as I could get them and still have them legible
Glad you liked it and hope it brought some festive fun to the forums
My 3 year old keeps asking me to get them out so she can see them which is sweet, normally they are kept in my man cave/garage but they are in a display cabinet.
When the kids are older and less likely to break them I might sneak them on top of the fireplace 1 night and see what the wife says
Voting is open now so go vote for your favourites its been a good month with lots of quality entries
Thanks Camkierhi, your comment means a lot coming from someone which such a well established and packed blog. I'm only about a 3rd through the stuff I've done so far, so a far bit more to go.
Right now the holidays and my Christmas entries are out the way I'll carry on with the other entries.
Ork Indiana Jones - The Temple of Doom Bridge
The next entry was an Ork version of Indiana Jones for a competition topic of " The Relic"
I was aiming to make something similar to the scene below, the rope bridge over the river in the Temple of doom film, I remember the bridge took me about a week to make when I was away with work in a hotel, there was a lot of effort cutting all the wooden slats and wiring them together. then creating the rope handrail.
Love the start of the latest pastiche. I started at the bottom and scrolled up - when I saw that first pic I thought "Its Cr-ork-odile Dundee!"
The bridge looks fantastic already - and you're right, you did a great job on the hat. How did you find cutting down the paddlepop sticks? I had to trim about 200 of them to make some roofs for an old D&D project, and I was about ready to throw them all in the bin by the end of it - they don't make it easy for you.

Lol, I'll add him to the list of possible ideas
It wasn't to bad cutting the sticks to size (new blade on the knife and they went quite quickly) the real pain was I added a 2 notches into each end so I could wrap the wire around it otherwise the gaps were to big in-between the slats. Having to do 200 of them might make me recogniser that view
Cheers Zerg, glad you liked this one.
I do try to have fun Ezki, and making random things like this entertains me and keep me going with the hobby
I got a total of 41 votes putting me in 3rd place out of 38 entries.
My first try at OSL, which went ok I think, I tried to make it a dull glow from the stones rather than bright light, I tried to use a backdrop of the area that the bridge scene was filmed took me hours to research since I couldn't find photos of exact location. Photos are also a bit odd since its quite odd since I found it hard to photo graph something long and thin but still get the detail (no comment). Just used some very old goblins to represent the warriors closing in on Indy Ork. Plan is to put the bridge into some scenic cliffs at some point.
Camkierhi wrote: Absolutely brilliant. Belated Congrats on 3rd. Those are really tough contests, with the best Dakka has competing.
Cheers Cam, yeah there are some very talented people who enter those comps but still friendly and good fun all the same, I'd recommend having a go at at least 1 to anyone.
Latest challenge if anyone is interested
https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/769184.page
Thank you Syro and CB, the Christmas dioramas are a tradition now I hope to keep up
Next up we have
Ork Captain Baseball Bat Boy
To explain, the theme was "Everyday Hero". I did some research into odd super hero's that didn't quite make it (ones like Squirrel Girl, Arm fall off boy or Matter-Eater Lad) but none of them jumped out at me as something I could do or people would recognise. When I was younger I remembered a Super Hero that was a bit tongue in cheek from the Max Payne video games - Captain Baseball Bat Boy
The Baseball cap is Greenstuff and I found it quite hard to replicate, the Cape is from a greenstuff press mold and the Base bat itself is a piece of Spure I filled down (I used a small file and a drill to create a mini lathe) I also put the Ork in the famous Babe Ruth "called Shot" pose point to the bleachers (and also the Sandlot Kids was a favourite movie of mine growing up). So while this seems like a simple model there is actually a lot of research and pop culture references in this entry.
Thank you very much Cleatus, I hope you like the next one as well
The Orc Warlord Grimgor Ironhide Taking a change from conversions I wanted to try and paint something to a decent standard. This was my best painted model to date, and is still one of the top ones I've ever done. I really liked painting the model and finding all the details you don't normally notice are there. I learnt a few more painting tricks and techniques on this entry, although I think I spoilt the final entry with the photos by putting the lights to close so everything seems a bit washed out, A lesson learned.
Wow! 9th out of 48 entries is very impressive. I quickly browsed some of the others in the link you provided, looking like a lot of good entries. The warlord is cool
Heres what I have so far, still a few bits to work out
Any tips to making it Orky enough are appreciated (but still want it to be recognisable as a Delorean and a model that can be used as a proxie for a Shokkjump Dragsta). Want I really need advice on is the paint job. Which one of these should I go for:
1. Ork colours all over e.g. Bad Moons
2. Back to the Future themed all over, e.g. mostly Sliver and Black
3. Mix the 2, all added bits are Ork colours all Delorean bits are Back to the Future.
4. Other (write in)
I'd say go mostly orky with a bit of silver and black. I mainly say that because the aluminium finish on the real delorean looks so cheap and plasticy that I think you're better off doing something else. The model is clearly a delorean so I dont think you need to reinforce through the paint job.
Remember the anti radiation hood for at least one of the crew
Yep, weathered silver and black is probably the way to go, and I think that even fits Goffs.
Are you going to cut a hole (or model it to look like so) in the hood for those saw blades? Right now they look like static sharp bits, not spinning discs. Of course that's totally fine if that's what you're going for.
Yeah if I go with the Silver it will be either really beaten up like this one
Or rusty and dull like this one
As for the Saw blades, cutting a hole there will be difficult since its so thick at that part and will require a mini angle grinder.(its a die-cast metal toy). I'm thinking if I can put them in a surrounding case then hopefully it will look ok.
You are right Nev the base as so many potential options, already got a list of 13 things that should go on it.
Hope I havent taken on too much here to get it all done in a month
Yeah it took a while to find this model at roughly the right scale for Orks, I did buy a 1:48 thinking I might be able to use Grot as drivers etc but it was simply just too small. The 1:24 ones have the dimensions of battle wagons or bigger which didn't seem right either
Managed to get a little bit done over the weekend so its all built, glued, bit of Greenstuff and now finally undercoated
I took the advice and tried to make an enclosure for the front blades so they fitted in a bit better and also started to add references into the base, got more planned if I have time.
Apologies for a gap in posts I've been really busy at work for the last week & 1/2 and then ill for the last few days so progress has been very limited (and why I haven't posted much) here is the current WIP. I'm away all week on a training course so its all or nothing now to try and get it finished by the end of the month for the Dakka (Unofficial) Painting Challenge Round 48 February 2019: Into The Breach!, trying to pack everything I need to carry on which will be an exercise in logistics and planning.
Not the greatest pic but any encouragement or feedback is welcome.
if you can fit a wash and a couple of metallics you've got a good chance of finishing while you're away. Good luck.
Also....It has a base... There had better be flaming tyre tracks! Can you fit it on the very front of the base overhanging as far as possible to.leave more.spafe for flaming tyre tracks?
In fact, you also need a second base that only has tyre tracks on it to represent a successful jump
Thanks IGtR= and Flinty, lol yeah that was on my list of extras I might be able to do, wasn't sure how to do to the flames. I thought maybe pulled melted glue but would have to make it and the car interchangeable. I'll see what I can do in the time.
An update from me, I did go away with work but had to pull out of my training course and get to hospital because I could no longer swallow, which does have its drawbacks. Turns out the cold I had last week hadn't completely gone and had lead to an infection in my throat that caused an abscess (called a Quinsey) to slowly build pushing my tonsil into my throat and blocking most it and making it very painful, even swallowing my own saliva was like chugging broken glass. Went to A & E and got admitted, they put me on a dip with some antibiotics and steroids and then the next day stuck a syringe down my throat to drain the abscess (that was fun....). Back home now recovering but not had a chance to do much painting lol hands are a bit shaken due to meds so there might be some wonky lines.
Trying to combine resting with a bit of painting every now and again. Will hopefully get most of it done but may miss out on some of the cool extras which would have been nice to have in there.
Eek! I literally had that exact problem once when I was a teenager. That was the most painful thing I personally ever experienced and I've had several broken bones in my life. Cheers to you for pulling through dude
Loving the Dioramas, especially the Santorks. I can see why they won you 1st place, so much character and fun. The Delorean looks very promising too. Does Marty McOrk have his pockets hanging out and self inflating Nike’s? I couldn’t spot a pink hover board on the passenger side... sorry I just love the Back to the Future movies, the last thing you want with Quincey is more hobby work!
Hope you’re feeling back to normal soon and back on the hobby battle wagon!

I managed to get it mostly completed to meet the deadline of the end of the month but did have to cut a few corners, for the hover board I wanted to add a grot hanging on to the back of the DelORKean with a lovely pink hover board. there are a few things I'd like to go back and finish or add to this but here it is for the moment, pretty happy with how it turned out
I was able to get in at least 10 References to back to the future other than the car itself, see how many you can get, some aren't shown in the photos, yet
Spoiler:
1. " Welcome to Hill (Hell) valley sign, - Town where the film is set and the sign gets graffiti'ed after Biff takes over.
2. Clock time 1003 - Clock on the tower was at 1004 when the lightening struck and the car made its jump.
3. DMC - on the front of the Delorean but got covered up by the saws so put it on the cow catcher (DMC = DeLorean Motor Company)
4. The Grots dressed as Doc Brown
5. Flux Capacitor - Can only really be seen in photo 3 behind the seat
6. Speedo in front of the driver says 87 MPH - just before the jump at 88 you can't see it in the photos
7. Morky McFly's (the Driver) Hat is pearlescent multi colour - same as Marty's Hat from BTTF 2
8. Morky McFly's is also address to match Marty's Blue denim and red puff Jacket outfit.
9. License Plate says "OUTATIME" - same as film car - not shown in current photos
10. Sports Almanac 1950 - 2000 - Magazine that Biff gives to his younger self and then becomes a multi millionaire from betting.
Still to be added in at a later date.
Spoiler:
1. Grot holding on to the back on a Hoverboard
2. Cowboy Hat on the car somewhere
3. A "No Roads" Sign - "where were going we don't need roads"
4. Docs Letter from 1885
5. Guitar - To play John be good on
6. Capacitor Drive Sign
7. A remote control for the Car
8. Reference to 1.21 GigaWatts
9. Burnt Tire tracks for a successful Jump
Loving the delorean! Grot Brown in particular looks great. Some other really cool touches too, the only thing not listed that I could think of would be the yellow radiation helmet. The grot on the hover board will be a really great addition, can’t wait to see it. Ooh, another reference could be uncle joey, a grot in a play pen would be perfect!
It's hard to make a good looking model out of a model / toy car. They usually turn out to look, well just that. A toy car.
You however managed to capture the look of a DeLorean and make it look like it was actually built or captured by an Ork. Brilliant!
Definitely. I was wondering how you were going to make it work as the pre-paint pictures looked intriguing. Final (or I suppose near-final if you add more!) looks awesome and definitely the best thing on this thread. Grot on a hoverboard would be awesome
Glad you all like it, thanks for the kind comments. You have convinced me that the grot on a hoover board is something that will be added
lol gobert, I had to look up the uncle joey reference and then I got it, nice idea
I know exactly what you mean with the toy car still looking like a toy car, they can look very out of place, I tired to strike a balance on this one and still make it recognisable as a Delorean and BTTF but put an Ork spin on it, otherwise I could have just used any car as a base and stuck loads of guns on it.
I've been really tied up with work the last few weeks so not been able to post much, here a sneak preview of all the stuff I've done from in the last 12 months and still have to put posts together for
Theres some threads up for the end of year painting challenge recap and results if you are interested, there is some really great work in the posts.
Hi all I had to take a small break from posting due being exceptionally busy at work and being away a lot over the last few weeks.
Now back to catching up with my older creations.
Ork Stegadon AA Gun
This was quite a fun conversion, I was away with work for a week on a training course so used the evenings to scratch build a set of AA Guns and mount them on a Lizardman Stegadon. The model was originally a Imperial Guard Catachan conversion with autoguns that I got off Ebay, I liked the idea but not the execution so I repurposed it for the Orks. I went for a Snakebite theme as it suited the mount and a giant quad set of AA guns because Orks. Unfortunately some of the photos turned out a bit dark.
@Flapjack, I think I did the scales with a base yellow then highlighted each scale edge which took ages, then Chestnut ink and finally a yellow highlight very light drybush. Glad you liked them.
Lol Gobert, hopefully hes got enough ammo to enjoy a large amount of constant Dakka
I'm afraid I've not had much time to post here or comment on others blogs. I've got a very big deadline looming at the end of June with work and its taking up most of my time, what time is left is spent with my family. Heres a quick post.
Ork Red Baron - Baron Von Orkhothen
I've wanted to do this conversion for quite some time, researching what parts to use and the background on the planes and Baron Von Richthofen from WW1 was part of the challenge of this entry but also very interesting. The model is made up of a Deffkopta Body (I have rather an embarrassing about of them but they are very useful for conversions) with some 1/48 Fokker Model bits and plasticard. The main body behind the Pilot is 1mm plasticard with rhinestones as rivets, the top piece is thinner plasticard that I bend to form a ridge. The engine mount is a tube cut in half for the top and bottom bits and some thicker plasticard (2mm?) for the side walls. Hope you enjoy it
I did a search for an Ork Red Baron a little while ago to see how else people had done it and found that a Russian website and posted my entry up and I'd got quite a few comments on it
So much amazing stuff here! Wow, I need more time to soak it all in and fully appreciate it. But the “Dakkalorean” definitely stands out as a pop culture masterpiece! And I love the AA Stego. I always wanted to do some Dino-riding Orks and you really executed it well. Great stuff. I salute you!
So I've been super busy with work over the last few months and completely neglected to post anything up on here. Any time I have had for the hobby was purely devoted to trying to get entries painted for Dakka's months painting challenge (latest one for December is here https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/782986.page if anyone wants to join in )
Time to get back into posting my back catalogue now I can hopefully make some time.
Ork Weirdboy After the success of the Red Baron and doing several conversions at that point I wanted to focus on painting so went for a standard unconverted model
Hello everyone, my children and work seem to be keeping me very busy at the moment so not had any real spare time for our hobby.
I would like to present to you all my most viewed piece of work (currently at 8.6K views) It comes up first on image searches on Google
My Ork Genestealers
I did some searches around the internet and combined a few of the ideas I found for Ork Genestealers which ended up with quite a cool end set of models. The Lore and discussions around Ork Genestealers and the possibility of their existence is quite interesting and can go down some real rabbit holes . the lore I gave these guys was a remote clan of Goffs that embraced the ideal of extra arms and growing your own weapons and armour as a way to do more fighting
