So i was discussing on this thread and i thought it would be great fun for Dakka to have its own 'Golden Demon' style event once a year. A Golden Dakka, if you will. I am happy to put a lot of work into the idea and orchestrate it.

What do you all think?

Maybe have a trophy of some sorts that is a large scale slugga painted gold?

I'm a big fan of the "evolving trophy".

Meaning, the first year, the competition organizer makes the trophy.

The first year winner makes the trophy for the following year.... and so on and so forth.

I like it! I guess a small entrance fee would allow us to make actual awards and such!

Given how big the gallery is now and some of the works we've seen here, I think several awards in different categories would be an excellent idea.

I've no doubt the sponsors of the site would be willing to step up to add to the prizes.

One cheaper idea would be to award custom dice to winners. A dollar or three gets you into the competetion, that money gets used to buy a handful of custom printed dice with "Golden Dakka Winner, such and such category," "Qualifier," "2nd place, etc." In addition to other prizes of course.

Sounds like a good idea. Any funds in excess of the prize support would of course need to go to the upkeep of the site.

Fantastic support all of you! And the percentages are speaking for themselves so far. I wonder if Admin have noticed this yet?!

I'll be writing up my plans tonight as i have to go out again for a while. Can wait to hear what you all think!

Peace out.

Ok, i've had a little think and here is what i have come up with!

1. Instead of Gold, Silver and Bronze awards, how about Hit, Scatter and Miss? Maybe miss is a bit harsh for the 3rd best in their field, haha!
2. Here are the categories i came up with(I think i managed to include everything from our vast community of gamers but tell me if i missed something):

Category 1
Warhammer 40k(Including Necromunda and Space Hulk) Single Miniature
Category 2
Warhammer 40k(Including Necromunda and Space Hulk) Unit(5-10 models)
Category 3
Warhammer 40k Monster
Category 4
Warhammer 40k Vehicle

Category 5
Warhammer Fantasy(Including Mordheim and Blood Bowl) Single Miniature
Category 6
Warhammer Fantasy(Including Mordheim and Blood Bowl) Unit(5-10 models)
Category 7
Warhammer Fantasy Monster
Category 8
Warhammer Fantasy Vehicle

Category 9
Large Scale Single Miniature
Category 10
Historical/Modern(1-5 models)
Category 11
Fantasy(1-5 models)
Category 12
Science Fiction(1-5 models)

Category 13
Fight!(2-20 models)
Category 14
Fluff(0-10 models)
Category 15
Open

3. I think everyone should be able to enter each category once. Do we all agree?
4. There will be an entrance fee for each category. If you enter all 15 categories you have to pay all 15 entrance fees. This means that the the categories that more people enter get better prizes. What should the entrance fees be set at?
5. Prize wise i think Jordan has had the best idea so far with personalised dice. These will be quite cheap to have made but most importantly they are used across all of the gaming systems. Games Workshop clearly chose the Demon for the same reason. On the other hand dice aren't much in the way of a mantelpiece trophy, maybe a single huge die?
6. Judges will not be allowed to enter the categories they judge. Judges will be selected by myself and the Dakka staff and mainly be compromised of ourselves(I assume).

P.S. Please, if you are answering this post with suggestions then use the 1., 2., 3., etc bullets given to link up. I am anticipating a lot of comments!
Oh and please don't quote this entire post unless you have too.

Thanks all, more soon! Peace out!

7. Forgot to say; I love snurl's idea for a years free DCM! I guess we need some Admin input to negotiate something like that!<winkwinknudgenudge> We could bundle it in with a big award for an overall 'Slayer Sword' style winner?

Come on guys, keep up the support you have shown so far!! C&C needed!

Heres some more:

8. I think the competition should be held near the end of the year but early enough that people can get their prizes in time for Christmas!
All entries must be submitted between: October 20th - November 10th
Winners announced: 1st December
Prizes delivered soon after.

How does that sound?

9. How should entries be formatted?
I'd suggest 5 images maximum per model.
Pictures should have white backgrounds as described in the Dakka articles.
Close ups of detail can be photoshopped onto unused space on the other images or can take up some of your image slots.

LostSoulCasey'sLaw wrote:6. Judges will not be allowed to enter the categories they judge. Judges will be selected by myself and the Dakka staff and mainly be compromised of ourselves(I assume).

6. Continued: Maybe the judges could make a short list and make a poll for Dakka to vote on?

Peace.

Just an idea here...
How about streamlining the categories a bit by removing the word Warhammer from categories 1-8 and dropping numbers 11 and 12? Dakka is not owned by GW, so why not open them up to other manufacturer's stuff? That way there isnt a problem if someone uses non-GW parts or figures. Gives 'em all equal footing.

Great idea! This is why i need input, otherwise i'm no more use than a lost puppy!

2. Remedied:

Category 1
Science Fiction Single Miniature
Category 2
Science Fiction Unit(5-10 models)
Category 3
Science Fiction Monster
Category 4
Science Fiction Vehicle

Category 5
Fantasy Single Miniature
Category 6
Fantasy Unit(5-10 models)
Category 7
Fantasy Monster
Category 8
Fantasy Vehicle

Category 9
Large Scale Single Miniature
Category 10
Historical/Modern Miniatures(1-5 models)
Category 11
Open(?)

Category 12
Fight!(2-20 models)
Category 13
Fluff!(0-10 models)

How is that looking? I reorganised a few other things...

Sounds like a great event and I'm really digging the format so far. What're we looking at in terms of entry fees? 2 or 3 dollars per category?

I think the dice idea I put forward would serve better as a trophy, moreso than an actual prize. For instance, if I placed second in an event, I'd win a dice that read:

"Golden Dakka Painting Challenge!

Because of the way they charge for custom dice, we'd have to get at least 10 of each. Maybe we can use them for "first cut" winners or something. Suggestions?

Also, I'd be willing to handle this portion of the event when the time comes, if that's alright with you, LostSoulCasey.

i'm Loving this idea but one small issue i am being bugged about is pictures... if someone had a pretty rubbish camera they wouldn't have as half as much chance as someone who was a pro picture taker... ithink this might be a bit unfair. any sugestions on how this problem could be fixed?

Any camera that isnt a webcam / cellphone cam can take decent pictures.

Though even a good camera cant create a good picture if it isnt properly used.

Come to think of it maybe the Historicals/modern category could be further divided into Historicals/modern Figures and Historicals/Modern Vehicles?

For the camera question, if you dont have a good camera could you get someone that does take some photos for you?

I was thinking £1 or £1.50, i think thats almost exactly the same. Although, tbh its a little to early to decide. We can decide that when we figure out some other stuff.

Hmmm... Or sell them as memorabilia?

I don't see a problem with that so far. I will right your name on my white board so i don't forget when it comes to dishing out tasks.
Thanks for being so helpful!

Thanks for bringing this up! I completely forgot to ask this myself.

There are some great Dakka articles which explain what to do. We could link these up to the entry forms? That way theres really very little excuse for bad pictures.

Bingo! Thats a great point, we should really give them there own little half section. Is there deffo enough people who do these games, yeh?
