I do not check forums often as I am busy with homework and after school program and I am not completely into 40k YET. I am 14 Y/O and i do not currently have the budget to buy a sufficient army and paints + brushes and i want a decent 1500 point army but now i only have a $150 budget at this point

Well with $150 and a little work you can get a decent 1500pt army together.

Its going to have to be a SM chapter or Orks though.

First go to ebay and pick up a set of rules/ dice / templates this will run you about $10 shipped

Next pick up 2 sides of the black reach box set, at $40 each side you should be at $90 total spent

After that pick up the codex on ebay for $25 shipped

That puts you at $115

After that pick up some super glue, $5, a can of primer in your main color $5, and a sample of reaper / valejo paints $20, and then get some plastic card $10 and pvc pipe pieces

Now if you play SM make some drop pods, if you play orks make 9 Killa kans and some trucks

You should be able to field 1500 points fully painted, more if you are orks and are creative.

I would go to ebay and try to find an army for around $100 or so and then get the codex and some paint.

Hey
Welcome to Dakka!
As others have said, if you're trying to do things on the cheap, ebay is your friend. I would suggest you spend more on a few decent brushes and 3 or 4 paints, because it can be REALLY noticable if you buy cheap horrible stuff. If you have a cheap brush it will need to be replaced much more often than if you get a half decent one first time round.

You can either buy a battle box for $110 ( or $87ish from the Warstore) which usually gives you a good foundation of base units, a transport, one unit that blows, and no HQ. The other option is the starter set, Assault on Black Reach, which now costs $100 ($86 from the Warstore) and includes enough stuff for 2 people to start armies. It also includes a mini-rulebook, some dice, your templates, and some red whippy sticks that are used to settle rules disputes.

Before we go any further, let me tell you this: You cannot build a 1500 point army in this game for $150, at least not one that doesn't totally suck in some way. Not right out of the box, anyway. However, if you're good at trading, you might be able to pull it off with the faction you don't want from the AOBR box. Let's shelve that idea for now. Without any trading, you can do a respectable 1,000 point force for around $125.

Lets assume you're going with Space Marines. Statistically, a safe bet. I'd start with the AOBR box from the Warstore, and try and trade out the side you're not using for some transports, possibly even in our Swap Shop. You can also get the AOBR set for $86 from the warstore, and add a Rhino from Ebay for $20, as well as another 2x sets of 10 marines for $22. Disclaimer, not my auctions, I don't know those guys, your mileage may vary.

At that point, you've spent $86 + $20 +$22, for a total of $126. Use the last $25 to buy a can of army painter primer in your chosen paint scheme and some boltgun metal, badab black, and a basecolor brush. You should have around 520 points of marines, 35 points of transport, 100 points of HQ, 100 points of dreadnought, and 200 points of terminators. Still not enough for a legal 1500 point game yet, but if you tart them up you can do a 1k point game, and with what you have, you have a well rounded force.

You play the game, decide you like it, you're going to want to try and score a used copy of the Codex and the Rulebook. Those are going to be a little spendy, though, even used. So maybe start off with the above and see how it goes.

Welcome to Dakka!

Hello, welcome to Dakka and to Warhammer 40,000.

I really feel like I have to mention something here: You don't have to buy the whole army at once. Quite on the contrary, it can often become a major hinderance if people buy full armies at once. You will need time to

.) learn the rules
.) assemble your miniatures
.) paint your miniatures

Be patient. I never bought a whole army at once and especially at your age, it's not only a very high investment but possibly an investment in something you don't end up enjoying. Don't get me wrong, tabletop wargaming is the most amazing hobby in the world BUT some people just don't get into it, get distracted, or something else happens. You've got $ 150,00. That's quite a bit of money and absolutely enough for starters.

Here's what I suggest: Do research online on what army you want to play. Don't let this choice be dictated by the money. Make it based on background and what models you like the most visually. These are the most important parts really. Then get a rulebook. Either the big hardback one or the smaller Black Reach one off ebay. Get the codex, a Troops choice (or two if you got the money) and a general for your army. Then go to a hardware store and get some hobby essentials (maybe you got some of them at home already). Don't buy these at GW because they'll only be more expensive and are just as good as the ones from the hardware store. You will need the following: Super Glue, Plastic Glue, a hobby knife (or stanley knife). You should have alright brushes from your arts classes at school. Next, buy some paints you definately will need (black, white, boltgun metal are usually on top of that list).

What I listed here is indeed an investment. You don't need to get all that at once. When I was your age, these purchases would have streched out over about a month or something. In the meantime, learn to be patient, read about the background, read the rules. As for reading about tactics online....I wouldn't do too much of that if I was you but do whatever you please.

Tabletop wargaming is incredibly rewarding but patience and practice are the key.

I had the same thing 2 years ago when I started.
If I were you i should buy the assault on black reach starter set and some other Space Marine units...
With that starter set you have around 600pts SM and Ork and you have the rulebook, dices and templates.
These things are damn expensive if you buy em apart haha!

I want to be a voic of dissention here.
People are telling you to spend money on painting supplies. Don't.
Cave your money for models. Make sure you enjoy the game and army you've chosen. Once you're certain you do, THEN worry about painting.
You do NOT have to paint to play this game.

For your first army, I'd suggest keeping your costs at a minimum. The Swap Shop here will net yo some good deals, if you're careful.
Heck, just put up an ad saying:
I am 14 Y/O and i do not currently have the budget to buy a sufficient army and paints + brushes and i want a decent 1500 point Tau army but now i only have a $150 budget at this point.

Ask for templates and a scatter die, too!

You'd be surprised how many people might just jump out of the woodwork to help you.
If you don't feel really safe about sending money to people here, ask a Moderator for their input about the trustworthiness of the people PMing you. They'll watch out for you.

As for paints:
You can get a can of (non-expanding) primer from a auto parts store for $3 or $4. You can get Ceramcoat brand paints for about $1.50 each and relatively inexpensive brushes. Don't try to learn to paint with the expensive stuff.
Just dilute those paints with a TINY amount of water, and you'll be fine (they come out of the container a little thick).

To be honest all you really need is an army with an HQ and two troop choices to start playing. You shouldn't be too concerned with getting as many points as possible right away. Just take your time. Me and a friend went in on the AoBR set and I took Orks and also bought a Burna set and just played small games for a while to learn the rules and what I wanted to add to my army to fill certain roles. Now I have a 20 Boy mob, a Warboss, 5 Nobz, 3 Deffkoptas, a Weird boy, 5 Burnas and a Deff Dread; roughly 750 points that cost me $95 dollars, $125 if you add in the paint set I bought. Even though I don't have 1000 points yet, I still have a lot of fun and I'm figuring out what else I need. And be sure to research all the armies in the game so you'll be happy with your choice. I have a friend that just bought a lot of IG without researching all the armies and he's always talking about wanting others armies.

Orkses is never defeated in battle. If we win we win, if we die we die fighting so it don't count. If we runs for it we don't die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!

Somewhere in the dark...

You could consider a Deathwing army. In the UK, I can pick up 4 boxes of terminators and a SM Terminator Captain for £100 and since you can usually get more bang for your buck in the USA, I'm sure you can get the same for $100 - maybe a bit less. That's 1000 points, right away and a legal army. It would also mean that you have $50 left to spend, either on more models or paints/brushes/glues etc.

What you won't get for $150 is a well rounded competitive army at 1500 points - like the Deathwing one I mentioned for which you'd need to get hold of cyclone missile launchers which everybody wants so are rare and therefore expensive:

http://www.thewarstore.com/product27050.html

But if you're patient you can get them for less on ebay. I wouldn't get the AoBR Terminators off ebay because then you'll also need to get hold of Thunder hammers and storm shields which are difficult to get, too. Get boxes of Assault Terminators from an online store.

Basically, you can easily get hold of 1000 points worth of a decent army plus all the modelling paraphernalia that you'd need to make them look nice. Try not to buy directly from GW themselves as they are really expensive whereas the independent online retailers give quite big discounts. Definitely get the rulebook and the codex for your particular army - again ebay. But don't download any of the Codices in PDF format that you can find easily on the net because people don't like you doing it, even though it would save you money. I don't condone doing it (although I wouldn't know if you did).

I always recommend beginners buy the Assault on Black Reach starter box. You cannot get a better retail deal from Games Workshop. It will supply you with the basic rules, templates, dice, a few pieces of scenery, 2 different armies and a few other things. In addition to it, if you decide not to play Space marines or Orks, you can just sell the portion of the army you dont want and buy more units of the army you like! Its all under 100$ and you will most likely find it online for less!

4250 points of Blood Angels goodness, sweet and silky W12-L6-D4
1000 points of Teil-Shan (my own scheme) Eldar Craftworld in progress
800 points of unassembled Urban themed Imperial Guard
650 points of my do-it-yourself Tempest Guard
675 points of Commoraghs finest!
