How did I lose track of this? Great work, mate!
Your mek's setup is so similar to the archivist I'm currently working on, that's scary. What tracks did you use?

shaso - the 'original owners'? That would have been Bob and Mavis Cuttleworth, back in early M.34 Not sure how much of a threat they'd be to a bunch of armed gangers.
dstein/shaso - I refer you to the field rations
vik - You know, I almost made a comment about my sanity when I posted that As always at this stage, these are just rough 'sketches' showing possibilities, it won't be those grots in the final design.
Probably not anyway
graven - Cheers bud! Are you sure there's a market for half-finished items?
HAZ - Thanks bud!
mbks56 - Thanks a lot! And welcome to Dakka.
Baiyuan - If we all kept close watch on all the threads we like we'd never get anything done Glad you found it again though.
Those tracks are from the old rapier gun, I've not made a direct comparison to any bits, but I reckon the size is pretty much the same as yours. 'Course, mine aren't hand-crafted
ldd- Cheers! But there's no pure genius to be found here I'm afraid.
Tainted genius, I'll give you
So still slow progress around these parts. Sent Tortured Robot an old-skool chaos champ and in return he very generously sent a whole bunch of ork and black orc sprues. Thanks chap! Plus I've had a drop of plastic tubing, connectors, valves and such like. Last night was spent looking at the various bits, tonight was mainly spent looking at the bits in combination with other bits
Started work on a heavy mek arm for Upzag.
And that is about it for now.
Heading to the London Model Engineering Exhibition next weekend. I forsee more shinies in the near future

Baiyuan - Thanks. You do realise he was originally started in July 2010, with the tracks making their first appearance in May last year? It may be a while yet
dstein - Don't you know that if you put two larger web trusses together they'll produce a little web truss?
It's a 3.2mm Plastruct truss, part no. 90651. (His brother is still in the packaging - I haven't memorised the Plastruct catalogue )
CK - I think you might like where that's going.
Or at least where I want it to go
So especially for dstein a quick shot of a few of the bits in my supply drop
I went with a few of various items in various sizes, I've already found a few pieces I'll be ordering in larger quantities. Also lots of rods and tubing, including triangular and hex rods, half- and quarter-rounds etc etc. A variety of angles and reducers for tubing, a few more trusses and some railings.
So, I'm angling for a movable arm on the back of Upzag's tracks. The hinge worked fine, needs covering and tidying later. But it really needs a piston to work it, right CK?
I'd originally planned to use my smallest hollow tubing, with some 1.6mm rod as the moving part. Angles and size of the arm ment I couldn't get that to work, the tube was too wide to get clearance for movement really. I have some little gold-plated jewelery tubes that are a tight fit for .75mm rod, but they are a tight fit, wouldn't get much movement of the piston, and wasn't sure how to hinge that to the arm. So I went for the easy option.
I decided to drill out the 1.6mm rod and use the .75 for the piston
Now to figure a good way to hinge those to the arm. I'm thinking I'll glue axle stubs either side of each piece and use supports with holes drilled glued to the arm. Only way I can see it working at that scale.
And when I say working...well...let's just say that the last thing I did just now was decide the axle for the arm base wasn't deep enough to provide adequate support. Figured I'd magnetise it for added stability.
Ended up supergluing 2 tiny magnets together and breaking the hinge on the arm

As for the arm damage that is a real shame to get it working in that scale and then it breaking must be a real kicker, mind you at least you have done it know and not further down the line when it is in use and you can at least alter it to make it stronger and safer to use.

Those are manways - access/inspection hatches for pipes, those came from EMA, as did the majority of my latest plastic supply drop.
I'd add a link, but I can't seem to access the site at the moment.
As for the arm, I didn't have the piston working in place, and still havent. Have now magnetised it, but when fixing the hinge managed to glue all the hinge components together All prised apart and awaiting second attempt later at the moment
And in a shock move I have some paint for you.
Not just any old paint either, but a finished swap for graven, for which he has been waiting patiently like a patient thing since summer

Sorry for the long wait graven, I'll get it shipped out this week.

ldd - No problem. Be warned, lots of interesting gubbins on the site, but can be a bit confusing in places if you don't know what the bits are, lots of missing images. And cheers! It's for a trade, so I want it to be as good as it can.
CK - Thanks! He was last in a while ago, been waiting for weathering and sealing for several months Now he's done.
And now I'm contemplating drilling two more pistons out, one to replace the one I've lost whilst fixing and bulking up the hinge, the other for the second arm piece.

Pistons completed, not quite so smooth on the drilling this time but I got there. One attached, one waiting for me to find the other set of drill bits, the one on my desk is missing the bits I want for that job.
Base is magnetised, wrist is magnetised. Still needs a stopper for the wrist and some claws.
The claws will be static.

vik - Thanks. Pogo-stick, piston. What's the difference?
dstein - Thank you man!
CK - Cheers, hope I can provide something interesting
graven - I'm beginning to think the second
So continued with the arm.
Was planning to use 2mm strip for the piston hinges, but couldn't find my complete drill bit set, so after trying the smallest bit I had available - far too small - I went with my standard bit. Not sure which size is in there, but I use it for drilling barrels and pinning with paperclips. Drilled 6 holes although I only need four hinges - it's best to have those spares handy if you bodge one, rather than have to prepare a replacement from scratch.
Built a stopper for the 'wrist' piston, that's going to be fun to paint. Got done after the build as I was originally thinking to bring the arm all the way down, but the piston length decreed otherwise. Also got a grabber in place, not the prettiest, but it'll do.
Got the main piston in place, not as much movement as I'd have liked, but it's in place.
So the arm is good to go right?
This being my blog, obviously not
That lack of movement bugged me a bit, how to extend that? Oh wait, the clue is in the question. Let's extend the piston housing, allowing more movement. Hurrah!
So I drill another piece of rod out and attempt to glue it cleanly in place, in line with the extending piece. Not the greatest success story in the world of miniature modelling, but a bit of thought beforehand would probably have already spotted that. The join was a little bumpy, so I poked my drill inside to smooth it out for the piston.
And when I turn the drill, the aditional bit pops off, revealing the solvent has weakened the thin wall left by my previous drilling, and tears in the process.
Actually, with the piston in place that's not really visible, so back to the small movement. I'll add a stop to the hinge to prevent over-extension and job is then a good 'un.
