I'm guessing you're referring to how GW doubled down on battlesuits and made bigger ones rather than the previous fluff indication that Tau used air support like Mantas to deal with titan-level threats, rather than going full-Pacific Rim?

I'm not sure if its the angle, but it definitely looks female. Maybe it's just a guy with long hair? Or maybe it's an inquisitor in power armour and the wings on the shoulder pad are just an aquila? I'd be super surprised if this was how female primaris marines debuted.

100% female, but not sure we can say Space Marine. I'm not seeing any armour here, most likely an Inquisition/AM/SoB unit. Still cool, really hope GW start bringing female models into the fold as standard.

Something like that, along with their original introduction in part, though they were an addition to the thematic elements of 40k, rather than a corruption/redesign of an existing faction.

From wh Erina:

"Spear of the Emperor is a Warhammer first!
Firstly it's Aaron Dembski Bowden being allowed free reign to flesh out a relatively untouched chapter of Space Marines (a rare honour for a Black Library writer).
Not only that though, it's also a condensed mini-codex for that new Chapter, replete with art, background, and a chapter tactic.
And a transfer sheet of decals for the chapter is also included!
Finally there's a gorgeous set of play aides and art cards."

Huh, ADB is the fluff writer for them eh? That gives them a lot more credence as far as their background goes. This also sets a precedent for what GW might be doing after GSC is released and all the codices are effectively done, we might get further additional mini-factions in this vein. Ideally, this means some stuff might some touch-ups in this manner, (commmmme on Black Templars!).

In a van down by the river

The female is most likely Anuradha who is the narrator of Spear of the Emperor and is a Chapter serf. This is discussed by ADB at his blog, with the relevant section of the preface below:

Anuradha offered a great chance at seeing all of this from an entirely human perspective, and a less formal voice for the text. She hasn’t been through hypno-indoctrination like a loyalist Space Marine; she isn’t an angelic weapon that struggles to understand the people of the empire she was born to defend. Similarly, she isn’t motivated by bitterness and hatred; burdened by the magnified emotional array of Traitor Marines, either.

So yeah, that'd be why they're an art print; they're the storyteller.

on the forum. Obviously

Oh wow, I was right.
Also, yay. I like chapter serfs. That's a concept they really need to develop upon, as it provides a more human perception of the inner workings of a chapter.

So I did some more digging, ADB said that he sought out inspiration from lots of different people whilst writing this, firemen, naval gunners, prison officers (basically anyone that gets put through the gak) and tried to find a way to use their stories and influence to write this book from the mortals perspective (I think he was drawing on how he felt listening to their stories, and has tried to use that to portray how a mortal would feel being around an astartes).

I'm guessing here, but I'm putting my money on the left hand portrait being a well renowned serf of some sort. Not mortal, not super human but something in between.

Those ears look pretty elven to me, though that may just be the angle of the picture.

Also, the veiled region (which the spears are the last of 3 chapters to watch over) is largely untraversed, the astronomicon does not penetrate in to it, and is frequented by a variety of piratical Orks, traders, unknown xenos and necrons.

Plenty of theory to be going at at least!

Oh. Well that's neat. I guess.

I do hope that there will be some models revealed at the weekender, though. I was kind of hoping for that.

Looking in to this further, I can't help but think this to be unrelated to Vigilus.

Looking at the map of cicatrix maledictum, the Spears are believed to be doing their thing at the south Western edge of the map, whereas Vigilus is in the ultima segmentum (I think) which is north eastern.

I'd be surprised if something big was coming to vigilus from that far off?!

Maybe we get Russ, wielding Gungir and GW figured "hey this'll be a good time to drop in other spear related stuff too"

It's kind of confusing because the wiki article is incorrect, it list Vigilius in the ultima segmentum, but it's actually in segmentum obscurus. The GW page list it as being in the Nachmund gauntlet, which per the necron codex page 14 is located right next to the eye of terror.

As another note the veiled regions are in segmentum pacificus which is the far eastern edge of the galaxy, so the spears are actually pretty close to vigilius.

I hope its just chapter smurfs.
Her armor doesn't look big enough to be powered armor, and I think marines have bigger heads. The sigil on her shoulder does look more like an aquila, yes.

It kinda looks like scout armor if I'm deliberately looking for proof, but she's probably a tempestus scion or similarly elite human.

Shes the POV Character of the Book, a Chapter Serf.

I like that idea a lot, should provide a very unusual perspective to the inner workings of a chapter. We'll get some unique commentary on the hyper-badasses of the galaxy from the people who do their laundry.

As awesome as it would be if they made female Primaris, I'm not sure that's what she is.

FWIW, after all the stuff they do to a person to make them into a primaris marine, I'm not sure you'd be able to tell what gender they started out as. Especially not under the power armour. But if there ever was such a thing as a female marine I don't think she'd be likely to have that "just stepped out of the salon" look.

In which case...

RUSS CONFIRMED

(how much hate will I get for capitalising that I wonder?)

He pops over to Garm, picks up his spear (which was originally owned by the Emperor, another tie in to this release) we start getting serious rumblings about Fulgrim doing the rounds and all a sudden it's a big brother bash around Vigilus.

GW release the Emperors Spear book as they decided to release something else that'd relate to that and job done. Something big came to vigilus and we get some awesome new ADB stuff about what's occurring on the opposite edge of the Galaxy.

Yes I'm probably gak posting. Yes I'll put the phone down and go to sleep now.

As much as I would personally approve of an entire faction of giant butch warriors, I doubt marketing would let the designers make more "realistic" female marines even if they wanted to.

That's because it's entirely unrelated. What the rumours state is that an Ultima founding Chapter of Primaris Marines is supposed to step up to the narrative plate for Vigilus. The fact that the Emperor's Spears acquired a chapter tactic from a limited edition copy of a new ADB book doesn't factor in here. It's cool, mind you - but isn't the expected new Primaris only chapter we've been hearing about.

It's called Spear of the Emperor by Aaron Dembski-Bowden and I'd expect it to be available from Black Library pretty soon.

Spear of the Emperor is up on the GW New Zealand web site of you want to check it out. Doesn’t appear to have anything to do with Vigilus, as has already been pointed out.

My money is on a new Dreadnought variant with an option to build Calgar with suitably Ultramarine blinged panels and such.

Maybe plastic Leviathans, like they cribbed Contemptors?

Other sites have suggested it's some big dumb Girlybro statue they licensed out somewhere.

I'd rather have another lieutenant.

A Calgar leviathan dread with dual powerfists would be dope(as long as I can make it not him or any blue armoured anything).

the guiliman statue looks cool but already out there by the company he partnered with. so not a shocking reveal
