Theres soemthing about him buggin' me.....bot sure whut though :S

Bugging as in slightly? or severly? Keep me posted on what it is if you crack it.

maybe drill some holes in the helmet, like some medieval helmets had?

Unfortunately any attempts to drill or tap into the face mask cracks the milliputt. So no dice on any vents, slits or holes in the mask. For a bit of gang related fluff, as this Ogryn was enlisted by the Herr Tower, the hunde des krieg have invested serious amounts of money in fitting out their bunyanesque bodyguard with armour and weaponary that most Ogryns would not even see in their lifetime.

The tattoo is from his old life. Malika provided a far bit of background info on the Ogryn species, and I am slowly reading through it - once I am done I will put together a broody back story. Sometimes the fluff is half the fun.

I am kind of strapped for bits at the moments, so what comms pieces would you suggest khaine?

The removal of frills also stops him from looking like a Brettonian peasant!!

True, the frills being filled was a simple yet effective way to drag this figure a little further from the dark ages.

I am in the process of fitting grenades, munitions and secondary weaponary to the figure at the moment. That, and finishing his kilt looking thing - though that may be kyboshed depending on how it looks.

Great progress on the Ogryn so far, AJ!

I love the idea of the helmet being a visor, a great solution that is.
Really looking forward to see how he'll turn out!

I worked out what was bugging me if its worth anything.

He still 'feels' too low tech. Tha armour style still looks medieval, its too rounded, not enough hard lines... And the hi-tech head looks really outta place on its body. Sorry for the bad news :(

Hello all, let me apologise for the lack of updated material and feedback. I am up to my ass with houses to survey, clients websites to fine tune yadda yadda yadda. Although, Acidwap and I managed to squeeze a late night game in on Sunday past and I field my ogryn for the first time. So, as a quasi battle report I have the following to say: "Ogryns are the coolest thing since waterskiing squirrels"

To be more specific, a declared charge broke the oppposing teams heavy and sent her running, in her abscence a hired a ratskin was totalled (which he could have hurled at nearby units, but I forgot he had that skill) he then jumped straight into the next bought of CC. which was then countered with an opponents charge, this struggle went on for three full turns without the figure suffering a single single wound. He couldn't have done better.

There were more back and forths, a triplet of rolled 1s for Herr tower with his plasma gun - thankfully not any one of those stray rounds hit the figure in his firing lane.

And now for the comments.

...This has inspired me beyond belief. Now to get off my butt and do something....never mind. Maybe later.

Ah well, I suffer the same affliction myself. Apathy is a curse I tells ya! I find starting a blog often gets the wheels turning and motivates you to keep production up. Could be an idea?

...the ogryn is a heavy right? still wrapping my head around the rules (im starting to get into the game).

The ogryn ripper offers sustained fire, but for all intensive reasons the Ogryn is a hired gun. Unlike others who are paid before play he can be hired into the gang permanently (alike a preacher) but his prescence make the odds of your gang becoming outlaws a little higher. +1 to outlaw roll, so he is an added risk to making things quite hard for your gang. Additionally, the ripper's effective range is woeful (8" or so) but with a +1 to short range and str 5 up close it would be absolutely devastating.

Apologies if this has already been asked, but what software / hardware are you using to create your mock-ups? They're fantastic!

No need to apologise. As Mortalis has recalled I have been using photoshop for my mockups. The image is made up of several layers. Basically, the raw image (photo of fig) is desaturated, and then using a series of layers with properties "multiply" for base colours and "overlay" for tints I then build up on top of the underlying image.

If you need any further info, or some help feel free to pm me and I will take some time out to explain the nitty gritty of it all.

Basically, a micro-bead set with s mall antenna to the side of the head

They are pretty cool, but comms would be incased in the visor. I need some ideas for bits on the back of the head airlines, audio sensors and electric lines and what not, any ideas?

...but the one thing that is bugging me about him is the forearm armor. If you could reduce the size of the plates i think it would help the look your going for.

Initially, I disliked them...immensely. But, after seeing him flanked by two attacking characters in combat the heavily padded and armored forearms made sense. In that they'd offer exceptional protection against the impact injuries of mauls and the slicing of swords, as an added ability to bash an opponents face in. I will be turning my second ogryn into an open visored gun totting version, who will have his bulky forearm armor stripped and replaced with an offhand blast plate.

He still 'feels' too low tech. Tha armour style still looks medieval, its too rounded, not enough hard lines... And the hi-tech head looks really outta place on its body. Sorry for the bad news :(

Noooo! Ah well, thanks for the honesty chief - *sniffle*.

It has been hard to drag him away from swords and spells era, but I have tried my damndest. I have added some more bits and pieces (ammo, armor plate, manifold holes) as well as angling up some of the original model in an attempt at modernisation, I will post some shots of progress come morning when the miliiputt has set and been filed into shape. As for the head I am a big fan of that, sort of a plexiglass face mask in lieu of a dark ages slit in helm - it may seem a little off for now but it's far from finished so stay tuned!

Also, the tips such as filling in the shaw and boots have helped immensely, so If you have the area in specific that needs tuning I am all ears - and I will try an get that up to standard.

Thank you all for the feedback so far.

On an off note, how common are tattoos amongst ogryn in the 40k world? and are they prone to drinking, smoking and other "sins of the flesh"?

Take care until next time.

Archibald Jack

'Sins of the flesh?' *shudders* You just had to ask that did you.

Well, it's a "sins of the flesh" can mean any of a few dozen things. I guess what I am looking for is info on whether they are prone or have historys of compulsive behaviour when in the prescence of alcohol, stimulants, narcotics and err, poontang. It could be something to hatch into the character.

SMALL UPDATE

So, as I was looking over my Ogryn all I could hear was ghostys words "HARD LINES...hard lines...hard lines" growing fainter and fainter like in the movies. So I took to alot of the detail on his arms and legs and filed as much of the rounded edges off as I can without destorying underlying detail.

I guess it's probably easier to show you then explain all the progress thus far.

Model Mk. 3 "Operation Hardlines"

As you can see the old potato sack bag has had further work, and now has linked munitiions pouring out of it. A Greenstuff lip folds over the top of the links, and will feature an Ace of Spades insignia from the Ogryns old platoon. As you can see on the spine ridge, and forearm there are little blocks of raised GS for gang rankings.

Additionally, I extended his back plates down to his belt and mounted the ripper in place. The ripper then had to be attached to the shoulder sling, this was done using the O ring (off the bottom of an ork axe) that was cut down and glued in place on the top of the weapon, the stock is secured by a belt of greenstuff that connects to the other O ring. The ripper had to be shortened drastically as it was awkwardly hanging from his body, and like a fool I cut it mid barrel which meant a mass of putting and sanding to get smooth again. So lesson learnt there.

I filled the boots in some more and will be adding the steel toe plates soon, along with filling in tatters on the front shawl. And as you can see the "ye olde" knees spikes have been filed off and replaced with hardline kneepads.

So, future addtions will be:

- fingerless gloves for the hands.
- 4th attempt at filing an eye slit for helmet
- steel tips for boots
- GS "ace of spade" insignia on bag.
- addition of air tank + lines to helmet on right hip.]

Well, that's it for now. I need to get back to some non-modelling work that I have been putting off for too long now.

Thank you all for reading.

Regards,

Archibald Jack

Well, you can download the Rulebook from the GW website, but there are a lot more rules that people have made that make the game more interesting (the Ogryn bodyguard being an example) on some websites, but i forgot what they where called.

Also, im starting of a gang too, so good luck too both of us.

There are supplemental rules to the ones that Ultra has so kindly linked to. There are some editions of "fanatics online" that added further dimensions to gameplay such as hounds, ogryns, preachers and additional species such as Genestealers and Orks.

Here is the link to the Fanatics Online Compendium

Personally, I always go for Van Saar as their paramilitary status means it's easier to source gang models from other armies in the 40k kingdom, well that and the techno skill is just too damn cool.

Thanks for that Jack, btw i'm going orlock (though i might make a custom house with their rules).

And i might use some privateer press models for them, but seeing how they're 30mm while GW are 28mm if i recall correctly so i'm hesitant to start getting some yet, but they match the style of gang i want too use (well, with a few changes anyway), still thinking about how i want them to look.

Anyways thanks and good luck.

Looks great! I couldn't put my finger on what didn't look right before, but I feel like the hardline armour and all the drillholes have really brought it much closer to the 401st century

I'd love that photoshop advice, if you didn't mind - I'm just really starting out, and I'll take any tips I can get! Appreciate that it's a pretty big ask, though, so I don't mind if you're too busy.

Once upon a time I was in a gaming group of about four people in my high-school. We played exclusively Mordheim (fantasy variant of Necromunda) and I kept trying to convince them that we should try Necromunda out, but alas to no avail. They didn't like "the shooty bits", the wusses. And it's a shame I didn't read this P&M blog back then because YOU, sir... constitute a whole reason of your own to start playing Necromunda!

Your conversion and painting is nothing short of awe-wait for it..... some! As people have mentioned before, the crisp and dark scheme makes the glowing eyes and red pad (and hand) jump out hard enough to slap you in de face. Makes me wanna get the Steel Legion stormtroopers for my IG army. And the chest-GS on the Kommendant... so bloody iconic!

And for Nico Rex, I really love the merchant gunslinger style. Even though I must agree that he strikes a resemblance with Big Boss, I was more struck with a similarity with a sort of... frontier peddler. Like an Alaskan trader during the gold rush. I'm still waiting expectantly for the final result on him

The terrain ideas look great, but since they're only on paper yet, I reserve judgement untill you've fleshed them out in plasticard or whatever other materials you'll use. The sketches look very, very nice however. Just that there's alot of work that'd have to go into them Not that it'd be work over your head, given the minis you've displayed.

And the ogryn... what a meatgrinder. gak, the body aside, I can't but look at that mean mother'effing "axe" of his. I'm sure any other pantsy standing under it would feel the same mix of terror and curiosity that I do. A sort of... terrible question of; "Just... what would that do to a person... to me?!". However, I still think that the latest pics of him showed off some definate "platemail"-looking armor on the feet. The knees and the spike on 'em and that. Looks very medival still. Perhaps a sheet of ceramic plating along the outside of his thighs and chopping thye spike off might work. Also, making the kneecaps LESS angular might work (and yes, I'm aware that that goes against the previous tip of more "hard lines" ).

But beside the Ogryn and Nico, I'm perhaps mostly awaiting the painting of the Kommendant's plasma gun.

This blog has more inspiration in it than you can take with you in one visit, man. I'll be hard pressed not to influence my own IG army with your scavvy Hellghast warband... and even if I succeed in that, I'll be in even more trouble trying to keep away from delving into Necromunda untill I've finished the 40K army Awesome, awesome stuff! And expectantly awaiting plasma guns, painted gunslingers and balls-shriveling Ogryns.

Duty and Honour!

My apologies for being off the radar as of late, but an influx of clients coupled with the looking and acquiring of a new rental property has been monopolising my time. Alot of comments to get through, so pardon the lengthy post.

Wolfed, thanks for all the kind words. However, I cannot accept all of them as the vast majority of inspiration for this project and some of it's characters came from others blogs and users on Dakka. Obviously, Migsula, whatwhat and majortom11 were my three primaries, but of course there are flickers of inspiration held by teams such as the paintingcorps, awesomepaintjob and such. And with since I have started chipping along and making posts I have been thankful to touch base with fellow converters, sculptors and greenstuff freaks such as blackhand, Khaine and ghosty. There are of course numerous others that have inspired this work, but I do not want to sound like a R&B artist at a crappy music award throwing out shout outs to everyone including the milkman.

And yes, the ogryn truly is a meathead. Total bullet magnet, but with toughness 6 he is proving quite the challenge to take out of commission.

Scarper, I will be more than happy to offer some photoshop advice, I'd suggest we use messenger so we can transfer files and go through the steps with live comms. But, that'll need to wait until I finished moving. So in two weeks time or so.

Also, I have recently taken down the fanatics online compendium and other rule books, if anyone should need them throw me a message and I will put them back up.

And now for a small update.

I have had some brief pockets of time to finish modelling the ogryn, and a recent break in weather allowed me to get him base coated and prepped for paint.

Now, what you may notice is that I eventually managed to drill some holes in his helmet. This ended up becoming a necessity as some other posters pointed out a glossy plexiglass mask on an ogryn looks a bit odd, that and the techy feel of it didn't really mesh with the rest of the crudely armored body. So, as opposed to drilling into the face I used my dremel with a cutting disc to cut a 1mm trench across the head, and then filled in the birdge over the nose with GS. It turned out quite well, and suits his armor to the tee.

For a short while he had an airline running into a tank on his hip, but as my girlfriend pointed out this would be something that would end up being a hinderence on field - and if it was shot out would spell the end for the towering bodyguard. So it was all ripped out and puttied in. The head of a dwarven warhammer puttied to an outlet of a SM backpack was then glued in place as a respirator plug.

Similarly, the ace of spades on his bag looked more like a trendy advertisement for a "ace of spades" bag manufacturer so this was abandoned.

In keeping with the rest of the gang he sports the iconic red right hand, which has been treated with the basic chipped and weathered effect that featured in one of CMdante's posts.

I am finding that handling the big lug whilst painting is actually rubbing off paint, so if anyone has any advice for painting the heavier models without wearing down the paint I would be most grateful. Additionally, I would love some advice on painting fleshy units, as I have zero experience with anything of that calibre.

So, that's it for now. Obviously once my move is out of the way updates and whatnot will regain their frequency and content - I hope to have the basics of the terrain done by the end of May and based on their success I will release a DIY for that particular venture.

Comments and feedback welcome as always.

Take care until next time.

Archibald Jack

Good to see you back Jack!

The Ogryn is looking ace, realy like the way he looks to be on the balls of his feet , knees bent ready to spring forward and slam the axe into a juves face! A lot of movement in such a big model.

My only suggestion about handling him while painting would be to get him based and pinned down as soon as possible so that you can hold him by the base when painting, not sure iof this will help too much tho.

Good to see this blog moving again! I really like what you did with the helmet, it was the final touch the ogryn need to be really awesome!

When it comes to painting, you have two options: one is glueing the model to it's bases and holding that, the second one is to always hold the same bit (the axe seems like a good bet), glue it to it's base, then paint the final part. Considering the weight of this model, glueing it to it's base seems the safer bet, unless the axe is attached very very well.
