Thank you all for the comments so far, as stated by many of you this project is well overdue - and believe it or not my 2nd troll axer arrived today, so big thanks to Gearhead.

So, I am in the process of uploading the final pieces onto my website, and the search for apartment/townhouse is going far better than expected. Consequently, this has freed up some time to do some project work - I also figured some of you readers may want to incorporate an ogryn into your gang, and may want to use Privateer Press' troll axer in place of the hilariously overpriced ogryns available for 40k.

Stage One.

Grinding, Filing and Basic modelling

The troll axer is a fantastic model for the conversion as he is already wearing vital armour (armour that covers the important bits) with basic rivots and some spikes. This works well due to the fact that the spikes can be left on for the more aggressive gangs such as Goliaths and Escher, or filed down to a smooth plated feel for the para military gangs such as Van Saar. This armour can also be beefed up where necessary with milliput or an equivalent, or scaled back in places with the use of a dremel or model file.

Secondly, the detail PP (Privateer Press) puts into their models is fantastic, and they come with an equally affordable price tag - especially if you grab one of the second hand models floating around the buy/sell section.

Here is the bottom section of the axer with rivots filed down, the spikes on the knees are staying to moor the new kneepads I will build out of milliput. This is also the first pin job I have done, and because I used an uber drill that seems to only have a speed setting of "wrist breaking" - I think I did ok. On that note if anyone has a spare modellers drill that they don't need, I'd be happy to take it off you - pm me and we can talk prices.

The "pin" used is a 3 inch bullet head nail that has been cut down and glued in place. I crafted a halo that placed in the indent around the "pin", I then pushed the upper half of the body into the Milliputt and revolved the tp half to a position I was happy with. As you can see, once you remove the top half a neat indent is left which will support the top half later on. The feet have been coated with milliput that was left to set then filed down to the shape of a boot - a sole will be added once I get some bases to mount this puppy on.

There is a sack that sits on the left hip that has "Ye Olde Stitching" and a wee little face in it (I think it's a baby troll?) the sacks stitching and the wee little face was ground off, and the bottom was flattened and shaped to suggest a drum magazine is sitting in the bottom of the pouch. There was a sizeable gap left once I filed out the baby troll, I can fill this by draping some ammo over the open lip of the bag to further modernize ye olde bag.

Same story as the bottom, spiked and rivots can be left on but for my gang they needed to be removed along with the studs littered across the shoulders.

Spikes, rivots and shoulder platelets were promptly filed off. One important thing to note is that the area where the head connects to neck on this particular model is elongated which gives the troll model a long necked almost reptilian feel. As we all know ogryns are rough humanoid species so the head needs to be in a closer to the collar bones and shoulders, to achieve this I had to file down the one of the brackets from the back of the neck along with the collar, this widens the area considerably - but frees up some space to runs tubes, sculpt greenstuff and so on.

The tools of the trade. The shoota is a an Ork big shoota that has been de-glyphed and had the small tooth filed off, a drum and handle from a ork shoota has been glued in place - which in turn gives the weapon the feel of a MG34 on 'roids. The stock still requires some work, but one of the coolest things is with the trolls upper half rotated to a level position the gun locks in perfectly to the straps that formerly held the ye olde bag on the trolls hip.

The axe has been de-headed and an ork choppa sits in its place. It suits the ferocity of the Ogryn perfectly - and it just looks cool doesn't it? I mean imagine the damage that would do if a 8 foot ogryn snapped you with it.

All the basic elements assembled. The head as you can see has been cut down to more humanoid shape - this is not the final head as he will be wearing a full faced helmet (I will post some concept illust' soon to get some feedback)

The next step is to craft some more plate armour for the back and the shoulders, along with fixing his shawl and giving it more of a kilt feel.

Just to give you all an idea of scale. Who wouldn't feel safe with that guy backing your plays?

I will have some updates shortly, but for now I need to get back to some niggling project work for a client and shortlist some more properties to inspect later in the week.

Comments and feedback welcome as always.

Thanks for reading.

Regards,

Archibald Jack

I was worried at first about the head, but you're covering it with a helmet, so no problem here.

The armor on his lower arms looks a bit bland since you filed of all the details. I'm not sure how it'll look after you painted it, but it could sure use some work imo.

The gun looks really cool, but I don't like the way you glued it to his body. Though I'm not sure where it would look better and/or would make more sense.

One last thing: where does he put the axe when he's using the gun?

Another Thing: looks awesome!

Awesome work Jack, the ogryn's coming along well. I think i'll reserve my judgement until i see the finished piece but at the moment it seems like the hands and fore-arms are too big. I dunno though, something just seems a bit off, even for an abnormal roughly humanoid thing!!

Good work regardless!

Once again, thanks for all the feedback so far. Hopefully this WIP will kick off an influx of ogryns into gangs that are currently scurrying around the underhive. As I can tell by the feedback the head on this fig is causing some issues and reservations - and I am in total agreeance as at the moment it looks like an angry potato with teeth.

So here is the concept illustration I came up with for the mask:

As you can see the helmet is a closed face model with breather attached, this was a necessity as my ogryn will have photo visor and respirator. These two features minimise the chances of this character being affected by pesky flash grenades or the more devastating psyche gas grenades. It looks a little plain, but that was the idea as hopefully it'll meld in well the very basic plate that surrounds his neck.

On the far left is the troll's head that has been plated with Milliputt and filed down to give the hard edges that the concept illustration featured. I attempted to drill out the spaces for the eyes, but succeeded in doing nothing more than lifting a plate of the milliputt from the head, which has been glued back on and been filled in with more milliputt. I believe after that failed attempt that the best option is to will model the eyes onto the putty instead of boreing into it as planned.

There are two options that I am toying with regarding the paintjob. The "skully" version will add some more pepper to this characters on field prescence. The "redhead" version ties in better with the core colour scheme of the Hunde des Krieg, but the red seems to be a little too loud, and would realistically do nothing but attract fire on field. Decisions, decisions.

The armor on his lower arms looks a bit bland since you filed of all the details...The gun looks really cool, but I don't like the way you glued it to his body.

The armored forearms will be drilled with staggered ventilation holes, similar to the ones seen on engine manifolds. The gun does look off on the picture, but that to do with the off angle and the fact it's moored with blu tack. It'll look better once ground and glued in.

One last thing: where does he put the axe when he's using the gun?
In the twitching corpses of his enemies.

Amen.

i'll reserve my judgement until i see the finished piece but at the moment it seems like the hands and fore-arms are too big

The medical term for this condition is "Regressive Popeye Forearm Syndrome" or RPFS, it branches from bad genes and the modellers poor grasp on proportion way back in the days that the ogryns first appeared in 40k. The most recent Ogryn models don't seem to suffer the same affliction, but they lack a sense of movement and are afflicted with OMM syndrome, or "Overpriced Metal Miniature Syndrome". So, I purchased two axers for the price of an Ogryn, and as the troll axer is a war beast in the Hordes universe it has the same lumbering forearms of something that can swing an axe the same weight as a Chevrolet Impala. Unfortunately, there is not much I can do to correct the proportions as the way the model works allows very little modification on the arms and forearms.

Consider it a homage to "gorilla edition" Ogryns of yesteryear that graced the tables for so long. That, and laziness.

I will have some updates as soon as the patched milliput cures and I can start mounting some features on the helmet.

Stay Tuned.

Archibald Jack

Looking good. You might want to add some more GW bits here and there on the figure to make him look as if he belongs in the 40k universe. Maybe use that filter part from the ball shaped part of the Space Marine backpack on top of the mask's filter for example. Another cool touch might be some sort of ammo belt over the shoulder on the torso of the Ogryn. I don't think one clip would be enough for this fellow.

Might not be such a bad thing. Perhaps the large arms would be considered a mutation of a sorts.

You might want to check out the Anargo Sector Project's approach to the Ogryns:
Ogryns [Homo Gigantus]
Ogryns are some of the most common ab-humans in the Imperium, being far more accepted than many other ab-humans due to their success as soldiers in the Imperial Guard. Standing around seven feet tall and weighing over two hundred kilograms, ogryns are genetically engineered giants. While the Imperium originally believed that ogryns were a result of natural selection on worlds with high gravity, ogryns were created during the Age of Technology as a way to populate high gravity worlds with valuable resources. In addition to their size, a very common characteristic of ogryns are their reduced intelligence compared to normal humans, a characteristic that was given to them in order to make them a successful worker caste that would be too naïve and submissive to rebel, or fairly easy to control in the actual event of a rebellion.

Around the age of nine or ten years, ogryns cease to develop mentally and they typically retain their child-like personality throughout their lives. As a result, ogryns tend to have limited cognitive abilities, very limited emotional control or self-awareness and form very strong bonds to figures of authority. This tendency to bond is taken advantage of by the Imperial Guard, as Ogryns are typically lead to battle by Commissars or occasionally used as bodyguards for important officers and personnel on the battlefield.

Female ogryns share most of the same characteristics as male ogryns, except being somewhat lighter and having a less powerful build. They are seldom recruited by the Imperial Guard and normally left on their homeworld, as the birth rate of ogryn females is far lower than ogryn males. While most ogryns come from worlds that are nearly uninhabited by humans, the sight of ogryns is increasingly common in the Imperium, and many ogryns that have served their time in the Imperial Guard will make their way to new worlds, making a living as factory workers, bodyguards or mercenaries.

Lovely work on everything. I especially like Nico. He looks so darn cool. I personally thing the redhead on the Ogryn is better than the Skully, but try a Redskull design and see what you come up with, though anything you do will look fan-diddly-tastic.

Ach! Mein gott in himmel.

The responses to this thread are bittersweet in that they offer amazing guidance and motivation which unfortunately works against my most apathetic work code. Thank you all for the feedback so far.

Unfortunately, I have attempted a second drilling to embed the eyes in the mask. This in turn lifted another part of the sculpt which needed to be glued back down, reapplied putty and then wait to cure before I could smooth it out again. A most anxious wait to say the least. Additionally, the idea of using tubed plasticard made the face look like kermit with a 7 foot build on crack cocaine - so it was dashed. I attempted sculpting a GS build, but trying to get small rings of greenstuff to grasp onto sanded milliputt is like trying to wrangle cats.

So, the following idea hit me:

What if the folddown part of the mask was clouded plexiglass, and required no eye holes, slots or whatever. The glossy glass effect could be acheived provided the surface was smooth enough using a gloss sealant later on. At least I am confident it can be - if someone has attempted something similar and it went pear shaped I'd love to hear your thoughts.

And admitedly the skull mask draws way to close a resemblance to a gimp mask (damn yoooo! DREADNOTE!), but I still have "ghost" from MW2 stuck in my head - and skulls are a constantly reoccuring theme. The red skull would definately be a sound amalgamation of the confrontation of the red on black and the direness of the skull. Another idea I had was to continue the skull as a bull or goats skull that ran from visor down to neck brace. Could be cool, hmm?

I feel you should paint/model his mask like a hockey mask; Friday 13th anyone?

I am a huge Voorhees fan so I had to try my damndest to keep the "jason mask" on the backburner...maybe next time.

I hope you didn't think i was saying it wasn't good, because it really is, that's just a small niggle i have in the back of my head! However, i have no doubt you can make it go away!

Hey it's cool chief, the reason I put these "out and about" was to get feedback to shape my projects into something more than private creations completed at crazy hours in the morning. Thanks for the honesty, I dig straight shooters.

A QUICK UPDATE

So, whilst watching the HBO series "House of Saddam" (great series, two thumbs up) I started to do some of the configs and conversions that some Dakka members said needed doing. Objective number one was to transform the plate armor from clunky dark age plate mail to techy and speccy composite armor. I found the best way to achive this was by using some strategically placed drill holes for manifold cooling, along with some Milliputt ridges that will later be cut down to segments once fully cured.

Here is a sample of what I have been up to:

In an attempt to modernise my ogryns armour fit out I have filled in the "frilly" parts of the shawl that wrapped his waist and added vent holes to his forearm plates, as well as bars that reinforce the protective plates. I gave the back the same treatment, and have since started adding more GW stuff (as per recommendation) such as munitions, grenadeds and weapons that bring this figure into the 40 century.

Well, that's all my updates for now - I will have some more once I sleep off this terrible red wine hangover.

Take care until next time

Archibald Jack
