How did the Gladius change the world? Other than the whole, belonging to Roman Legions, and they took over a bunch of stuff around the world.
It was part of a fighting style/equipment combo that was able to be superior to barbarians

because in reality, a broadsword is a completely separate family of sword to the hand and a half, again, i think itd be against forum rules, but the other name for the hand and a half, is the bastard sword.
found this link fairly quickly, its decent in its brevity on the differences in european swords:

Yeah and I'd rather spend a week learning a crossbow than a good few years learning a longbow... plus the latter actually requires a good frame on myself.

Well, 10 plus years of medieval sword combat behind me, I'd say a nice suit of Italian plate and either a poleaxe or bardich.
However I normally have a huge amount of fun with a bill or lochaber axe and my venerable Paul Binns arming sword.
As for Katana vs sword... Well my opinion someone like Fiore in plate with a Langswerd (Longsword) everytime for the win!
Edit - spelling!

If I was wielding with minimal training, probably this.
If we are saying I am highly skilled and fully adept with my weapon of choice. Then it has to be the Kusarigama, just for the sheer delight in getting to use it in combat.

I know the OP said no guns but;
1. I don't care.
2. This is from the medieval period.
3. It's hilarious.
It's a ribaudequin, or a real life organ gun.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
