i think your going a new and artful way if you continue the de-sat way... this will look very good in the end... gritty and used like in olf warfilms or even in some of the better sifi movies...
away from the comicesque ways of painting... the streetlevel looks stunning...
looking forward to see more drysucked scenes^^

I am not sure which would look better myself - difficult decision... Desaturated might work fine so long as you get a good light/dark contrast to bring out the detail.

Some of the tones are a little similar Klaus.
If reducing the bright colours you can still play with warm/cool and light/dark contrasts.
It may be worth considering complementary colours in the greys.
Sorry if you know all this which you prolly will.

Thanks for your feedback
Well, I agree the result from last week on the de-saturation wasn't very convincing. But I decided not to give up so easy, and gave it another try.
So I mixed up another set of greys and applied it to the test mini
Then I gave it two hefty washes of Badab Black
and that was a lot more convincing.
So I applied the grey to the other girls, gave them some washes of Gryponne Sepia (for the Gold and Skin) as well as Badab Black (all other areas, and a 2nd wash only for the blacks and reds) and last not least a wash of Devlan Mud for the leather pieces.
And in front of the base, they are almost invisible
After that I started to mix up the highlights for the gold
And this is how far I got yesterday
Which pretty much completes the gold
So it is VERY different, but I think it will be worth the effort...at least I hope so.
If it comes together as I hope, it will be very sinister and dark looking, and hopefully I can squeeze in some OSL for the Sisters Power Sword, maybe some lights on the Bolters ect. to give it some extra highlights....
HOPEFULLY
Let me know what you think,
Cheers
Klaus

Wow... I clicked on this to see what "de-saturation" looked like- I like the blending tones, especially when you put up a standard Sister against the background. That's really interesting. I might have to give it a go, as I was looking for a way to give the overall theme of my new (planned) eldar army a darker, more sinister feel. I look forward to more of this!
P.S. Oh yea... and congrats on the Deathwatch competition win... that diorama is friggin' SICK.

Thanks guys
I really, really apreciate your feedback - it keeps me driving on.
I worked some more on my de-saturated Sisters.
Upon completing the paintjob I prepared my pigments.
For this I ground some pastels and mixed the powders as I needed them
Then I applied the powders with a dry brush
and carefully applied spirit to fixate the prigments
One must be very careful with the spirit, so it doesn't loosen or strip any of the underlying paints.
But I think the result is worth the effort
So what do you think, was it worth the extra work, or could I have achieved a similar result with the standard colors?
Cheers
Klaus

The glow on the robes is amazing.
I'm not sure if it could have been done with standard colours, I'm not very good with paints myself, but the effect is so gritty and realistic while also giving the pinks a real soft and subtle glow to them.
Congrats, you've raised the bar again

I dunno Klaus... that satiny sheen on the sisters clothing is pretty special. Don't think you could have gotten that any other way and it makes their look very, very unique. Sensual without being overly sexual... like finished silk.
I think it was worth it.

You would probably have got an awesome diorama just using standard colours.
But you wouldn't have got the same kind of awesome, or the level of atmosphere this piece already has. Definitely worth it

Thanks guys
Well, progress is very slow, as I have a ton of work and was plagued by some hefty migrane attacks.
Never the less, I did work on the diorama.
I began painting of the Monk, the Grey Knight, and the Crusader.
I decided to finish the characters first, so I can see where each energy weapon is poisitoned and will cast it's glow on the car and the surrounding terrain.
So I charted out which colors to use.
Then I applied the de-saturated base colors as well as the first washes of Gryphonne Sepia and Badab Black
Some glazes later they look like this
and that's pretty much as far as I got :(
But in the meantime my price for the " Deathwatch Painting Competition" arrived!
A signed copy of the Deathwatch RPG
A big thank you to Fantasy Flight Games for sponsoring the competition, a big thak you to DAKKA DAKKA for holding the competition, and a HUGE thank you to Jon for shipping the price despite the hilarious shipping rate!

Beeeeeaaaauuutttiiifulllllllll, just a tiny criticism, the rear shot makes it look like the marine is firing over the ork, not at it but that could be the perspective from the camera. Also will the deathwatch marine be getting a backpack??

Thanks guys
The Muzzle Flash was self made with Green Stuff - its very simply, but I'll see if I can make a tut of it.
Yes, the actual shot is now going over the Orks head, but if you look at the way the bullet holes "wander" up the Orks body, from the belly up the head, the last shot - which is now released after the impact on the head, it goes over...so it is kind of intentionaly
Here's the final collage:
I hope you like it.
Cheers
