I ruined my Deathwatch Space Marine.

Too much primer really obscured a lot of the details. I'll probably set this one aside and just use during games as a regular Devastator with Heavy Bolter..

I started over with a new Deathwatch Space Marine. This one I decided to have using a Thunder Hammer.

I plan to start painting tomorrow. The real challenge will be putting on the Ultramarine transfer... I'm terrible at transfers.

Instead of writing him off I'd strip the heavy bolter marine.

I'm going to try and make time next week to assemble and paint mine but no promises.

I'm not exactly writing him off... I just won't be using him for this competition... He'll have uses elsewhere. I actually don't mind painting him as is. I'm not experienced with 'stripping' and this late in the game, I'd rather not use up time to learn/practice it.

Bah! It's seriously as easy as immersing him fully into a dish of Simple Green, and coming back in a couple of days with a toothbrush to take off the paint that it will peel up. At worst, there will be some small details(eyes, etc) that you will need to scratch the head of a pin into to get the blackout of, if you care to at all.

There are a couple of other very good stripping Tutorials in the Tutorials section of the forum if you do a quick search, this is probably the easiest AFAIK, at least over this side of the pond, i dont know if Dettol is avilable to you guys, I think Simple Green (sp?) is the alternative.

It is started from the black undercoat worked up with chaos black and scab red then through scab red to a lighter red like mephiston red. Sorry about the old colour names I haven't got many of the new paints yet.

Thank you for the link. I've actually have the materials necessary to strip as suggested by another tutorial. I just don't really have the time or facilities to really attempt it. In fact, I'm barely finding time to paint due to crazy work schedules. I'm not sure if I'll have the marine done in time to turn it in on the deadline. While it is a couple weeks away there's still the matter of shipping the model overseas... I have to account for the time that will take.

Good to know! Sometimes when I ship overseas it seems to take weeks before arrival.

I wish I had kept the Heavy Bolter Deathwatch marine now. Decided to donate him to a guy who's looking to get his kids in the game and was looking for any models people could spare.

But its all good... I like my Hammering Harry.

...I wonder if they'll let me paint at work...

There is a way to properly salvage the mini and restore it as new!! This will work for anyone
who as done something similar to djphrang with either over priming or over painting a mini.

This method works for both metal AND plastic as it is both easy on the material yet strong enough
to strip the paint thoroughly. A very nice balance indeed!!

So really, pro-tip to all:

First, wash it with soap and warm water. No scrubbing, just a general pre-soak/wash.

Next, you need to fully submerse the mini in Pine Sol (BRAND Pine Sol, not any knock off, unless
you know for sure it's comprised of the exact same natural ingredients. Bad or harsh ingredients can
and will result in a MELTED mini, no joke!!
)
for about 15-30 minutes.

You should notice the paint gradually coming off on it's own, or if it's really settled in, check it
after an initial 10 minutes and every 5 minutes after that; the paint should come off with gentle
rubbing with a Q-Tip.

Repeat soaking until desired results (e.g. all or most paint is off), but do not let it sit too long alone in
the Pine Sol (hours or more) because it can start to dissolve the mini. But no worries, It takes a long, long
while before it starts doing this, and only blatant negligence can really result in such a thing happening, but..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
REMEMBER: Do NOT use any other solvents. NONE -- ONLY "Pine Sol" brand cleaner (or, cleaner that is
comprised of the SAME natural ingredients). Other solvents are TOO harsh and will dissolve the mini outright.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Generic acetone brush cleaner and a Q-Tip will also work to a slighter effect, but will:

1) take much longer

and

2) could potentially ruin the mini with too much use.

I haven't used acetone to a greater extent to fully test what could happen to the mini, but would rather recommend
simply using the Pine Sol method instead.

Once you've achieved your desired results, do a final soap/warm water wash and dry thoroughly.

Now, enjoy your "reset" mini!!

NEVER use Acetone on plastic minis!!! It'll turn any given marine into a pile of Nurglings faster than you can say "By the Emperor's golden codpiece"
Even acetone free nail polish remover tends to melt plastic if you dont pay attention.

For metals, theres no better stripper. soak it in a pot of acetone for five minutes and EVERYTHING comes off it. Glue, paint, Greenstuff.

My recommendation is Superclean for stripping. its an automotive engine degreaser, and its great for stripping paint! I use it almost exclusively. It takes a little for the mini to soak (figure overnight is best) but after that paint just peels off. Best of all, theres no chance for the mini to melt- Ive left a marine in a pot of Superclean for more than 4 months and the only thing that happened to it was all the GS dissolved on it.

well thats bogus. there are several products that can salvage that mini. Simple Green, Purple Power to name a couple. just because one works doesn't mean its the end. Purple power has never destroyed any of my mini's, and some have been sitting in there for months. plastic metal AND resin.

needless to say, that model is salvageable.

the real problem, is how much you're over spraying your primer. it should be a light mist over the mini, not an actual covering. very very little actually has to be used.
