The painboy reminds me of some cheap 80's ninja movie in that brown face mask
Obviously, some kind of post-apocalyptic ninja movie to explain the whackin' great buzz-saw arm and the giant hypo-pistol. (Ok, the imagery breaks down a litle at this point...)
Meganob looking smooth.
You're definitely still going strong on the painting front so I'll not say anything and just sit here idly playing with some tiny magnets.

@monkeytroll: He will be the white ninja in the end - with blood! Yes, I seem to have managed to break through the pain (sic) barrier of base coats and get to the slightly more interesting wash and highlighting stages... Never fear, modelling will return eventually. Once they are painted, well, I can only game with them

I've followed your thread for a while now and i'm loving it. Your paint scheme is reminiscent enough of the Red Period that it encourages nostalgia but it's beautifully balanced and extremely well painted. Everything the Red Period couldn't be. Keep up the good work!

@LostSoulCasey'sLaw: Always nice to get a comment from a long time lurker I had to look up "Red Period" - I *hope* it has something to do with Picasso (though I can't see the connection in context) because you don't want to Google "Red Period" by itself Feel free to explain further for those of us without a clue (ie me )
@HAZZER: Yup, white like an Apothecary. Da Dark Angelz aren't completely up with Marine designations - he has his Dark Green shoulder pad representing his affiliation to the Dark Angelz, but he has his Painboy/'Urty Glyph on it... (I think I got it better sorted on the Big Mek - now where did he go?) It's a bit late now - I'll make sure I do a propa Painboy shoulder pad on the next one
@CommissarKhaine: Let me know what you find, I can reminisce with you
@monkeytroll: Funny you should mention that, tonights efforts fell squarely in the "wanes" category...
Meganob, Graveyard Earth reapplied:
Painboy: 3:1ish Bleached Bone/Calthan Brown applied:
Hmmm... not my best pics... I started applying thinned Bleached Bone to the Boyz, but it is going to take so many coats, and is difficult to get smooth. I ended up mixing in Calthan Brown, which seems to have been a much better idea. It's still going to take a while to build it up. Not as awe inspiring as I had hoped yesterday
Oh well... maybe I'll "wax" again tomorrow...

I think he's refering to GW's 'Red Period', late 80's when everything had to have some really bright red on it. In the odd case where there wasn't any red, it had to be very lurid to compensate for the lack of red

Haha, yeh i wouldn't go googling that.
As monkeytroll said, it was a period where models were painted rather garishly and 90% of them had red on them. Don't get the wrong idea though. Your models are beautifully painted, the red with orangey highlights beside the dark green just really reminds me of the colour schemes of the day but done to a much higher standard. It wasn't a great analogy. And yeh 'Red Period' is a play on 'Blue Period.'

Well, technically the late 80's was before I first got into 40K I remember perusing the Rogue Trader books, but was advised to hold off because 2nd Edition was about to launch - according to Wikipedia, that makes it late 1993... Orks have been my first love ever since.

I have 5 of them and Nazdreg. I often use in games as nobz with cybork bodies, they are some of my favourite models too. Nazdreg especially.
Maybe I can find a picture of how they were painted in the red period, as people say now we are in the blue period, or better put the ice blue period.
Keep at it Arakasi, I remember them at silver skull they are so much further now than then.

@Cutthroatcure: Good times
@CommissarKhaine: Those Deffkoptas aren't too far off finished really - just bone white and black from memory... well, and some small details The Trukks need a lot more work - but will probably be my next project - can't run a Trukk Rally and not enter my own Trukks! The GMS Stormboyz are finished - I just have to get off my butt and send Gitsplitta his. Supadeffkopta? I thought that was yours?
@LostSoulCasey'sLaw: Nostalgia indeed! I used to have 5 - before I sold up everything before coming to the UK (I hadn't touched my 40K stuff in years - and never expected I would be back at it - but you can't play 40K for two editions and *not* visit Warhammer World if you come to the UK... and that was the beginning of my downfall...) Back then, the few Orks I had painted were painted in clan colours - those were painted as Bad Moons - well, at least one of them was I had Goff Sluggas (the ones from the 2nd Edition box), Deathskull Lootas, Grots (also from the 2nd Edition box) in Bad Moons, Evil Sunz and Goff colours. The sad thing is, once I finish these shootas, I should have more painted Orks than I ever had previously though
@monkeytroll: ebay perhaps? I do prefer the new ones over the old ones though... but they would make for a lovely selection of bitz for a mad mek/painboy hybrid such as yourself
@ceorron: Are those the ones that put holes in my diversified Nobz mob
Apparently last night's "wane" did not continue, so some progress was made. Meganob got a layer of 1:1 Graveyard Earth/Desert Yellow (can you even tell?)
The 1:1 Calthan Brown/Bleached Bone was having much better results (though still some more layers required I think) - Shoota (apologies, a bit out of focus)
And the ever popular Painboy:
Still a long way to bring that up to white...
Thanks for checking in everyone!

Calling this the blue period seems so heavy handed, lol. Not to mention preemptive.
The two i have have been reduced to their components and the paint is chipped but the original owner(my cousin) painted them beautifully. My plan is to one day take detailed pictures of each component, clean them and recreate the original paint job. I'll need to develop my skills a bit though, luckily i think i might still have a couple of the pots of old citadel paint he originally used to paint them.
Anyway, i'll stop leading y'all off topic.

Painboy seems to coming along nicely. I feel your pain about the dozens of layer though. I do my human skin like that for characters, and while the effect is worth it in the end, getting there is always a slow and arduous path...

Challenge accepted . Took me a while to sift through my squeaky waagh!!, but here's a few quotes from you:
Arakasi wrote:
I think the Buzzsaw is fine. Unlike most Deffkoptas I see - I like the front profile (which almost looks hornet like), but not the side profile. It does just seem a bit long - reminds me of those two seater bicycles. How are you planning to have it actually balance? If I did a Grot Deffkopta (and it would have two "pilots") - I was planning to put the seats one in front and slightly below the other (then again, I have a fixation with Apaches it seems...) - but I don't think the Buzzsaw would work with that... Or you could double width the Deffkopta perhaps. With what you have, I'd just chop the back one off - but that's me. I wait with anticipation - you've managed to turn my opinion around before
Arakasi wrote:
Pilots are up to the usual standard - excellent! Smaller won't be an option huh? You know I still haven't decided on my 2nd Deffkopta layout, but comments like that almost sound like a challenge!
Arakasi wrote:
A low rumbling noise in the distance slowly lifted Skarag from the state of Orky "koncentration" he had been enjoying doing up Da Inna Circul's trukk. Deffkopta? Two deffkoptas? Skarag struggled to picture the machine in his mind. From the sounds alone he could distinguish two rotors, but they were too synchronised to suggest two deffkoptas, two unsynchronised for Space Marines, and not powerful enough for a warkopta. The power to weight ratio seemed... off... too. Whatever it was had peaked his curiosity - either an ingenious contraption - or an abomination. Skarag's curiosity was soon satisfied as the vehicle appeared over the horizon. Grabbing binokulars he inspected the machine. Grotz. A new idea was forming in his mind. He motioned to some of his nearby boyz, who had now also noticed the flying hazard in the distance. "Get dat fly'in kontraption - I need da parts!"
CommissarKhaine wrote:
Arakasi: I changed the thread title back just for you! Besides, look at the scale shot and tell me you don't want such a huge flying monstrosity chasing 'regular' deffkoptas ... Heffling has been converted to the dual rotor church, and now I'm working on Arakasi when it comes to a two-seater - where's your dual kopta btw?
Ha! Unfortunately, my second deffkopta is at least two weeks away from being started, so the "kompetition" is on hold until then. It will literally be the last model I put together of my 1000pts. I don't want such a huge flying monstrosity - there I said it - well, at least not yet. At this rate I'll probably make a start on three deffkoptas - Avatar style (there's your two rotors, but not as large), Grot Apache (the two seater) and Star Wars Landspeeder style - and finish whichever one looks like it will come together fastest - I'm running out of time!
