I used to play 40k back with 2nd edition (before it was even called second edition ), but recently a much younger brother has gotten into playing, and has sort of inspired me to take up my paintbrush and build an army to obliterate him.
Back when I played I used to have a massive Space Wolves army, pretty much the entire chapter in fact, including the amazing Wolf Guard armed with both cyclone missile launchers AND assault cannon on the same model, but unfortunately I got rid of all the models years ago, and my Brother is currently using Space Wolves too, so replaying as them seems kinda silly to me.
I want an army that isn't going to seem silly fighting a Space Wolf army, I always found it strange the number of space marine chapter vs space marine chapter battles that took place at the games club I used to be involved in, so I decided right away I wasn't going to use Space marine or Imperial Guard. I *did* start an Eldar army back in the day, along with a Tyrannid one too, but the eldar kinda died a death for me, and I got insanely bored with painting endless genestealers in the same pose and same colours over and over again, so I'm avoiding both of those armies too. leaving aside the Tau and Necron, which don't seem to fire me with much enthusiasm I've decided that I'm either going to go for Chaos Marine, or Dark Eldar, which I'm leaning more towards as a tactical challenge, so the reason for this (probably overlong) post is to gather some opinions from players who understand the current ruleset. What issues am I likely to run into with these armies, are there glaring weaknesses that make either of them a waste of time?
Thanks in advance for any hints and tips people offer.

Welcome back. I salute you for avoiding marines. Nids have a brand new codex and new models so you might check them out. The Ork codex remains very competitive and has some great models, but if you're dead set on CSM or DE, go DE.

The Space Wolves have a long history of fighting against the Thousand Sons, so perhaps Chaos is the way to go?

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

Ditto frozenwastes post i myself have played SW with my 1k sons and am 50/50 win/loss record against them and have had a blast playing as 1k sons. Word of warning though if you plan on tournies with your army mix in some CSMs with the 1k sons seeing as they lack the AT needed to take out transports and other tanks reliably.

That would certainly fit, but Thousand Sons, and tzeench in general doesn't really fire me either. if i went Chaos i'd be thinking more along the lines of Chaos unified or khorne Tbh.
still leaning more towards DE, but if anyomne has any good reasons NOT to take them and go CSM instead i'd be interested to hear em. can't promise i'll agree, as this is a very subjective subject, but i will take them on board.

Dark Eldar have godawful models and they haven't had a new codex release in over a decade. From what I hear they're a very interesting army to play as though. Rumors persist of them either being removed from the game or getting a new codex in the next year, but those rumors have been going on for years.
I would suggest Tyranids. Wolves have a lot of stuff geared to fight big monstrous creatures like the 'nids have, and the new Tyranid codex is pretty solid. There's a lot of narrative potential for 'nids vs. Space Wolves too.

Uhh, because DE look utterly ugly and may, at any moment, get retconned out of existance. However, if you want to pony up the extra cash and effort, they can be made to look amazing by kitbashing Eldar and Dark Elves. They also have no learning curve; instead they just drop you off a cliff. If you make a mistake, you'll lose against anyone decent. If you don't, you'll rolfstomp them.
Chaos is very forgiving, especially if you run Nurgle (Pappa loves his children, after all).
The Thousand Sons and Orks are the Space Puppies' greatest enemies, if that really matters.

Pros of DE:
Very few players know how to beat them if you build a good list
Cool background
Very unique and fun rules
New codex being worked on
Cons of DE:
Only handful of tourney lists and not really all that great above 2000pt. games
Can get really repetitive playing same list
Some think the sculpts look really bad
No idea when new codex will come out as they have been saying it will come out for the last few years.
Just a few pros and cons as there are many more.

Well, after some deliberation, I decided to forget the DE idea for a while, and do a CSM army, so I'm going to work on creating some Black legion troops to obliterate my bro Thanks for the advice and welcomes. The DE is only postponed, I love the idea of the army, so if they DO redo the codex and models (yeah, lots of ugly, I took a closer look) in the future I'll go right back to them.
For those that recommended Tyarnids, I looked closely at them, Read some comments here, read all the info i could find on em, and decided against them because i think i'll run into the same issues I had with them before.
Damn I really wish the internet was around when I played originally, certainly makes getting information easier!

Black Legion is pretty much the best thing you can build with Codex: Space Marines. It's hard to make a list that really fits one of the Legions from the background fiction.

I suggest,
You reconsider.
Tyrannids can go heavy on gig models, so they are a smaller and easier to paint army now, than any other, if that's your criteria.
New codex, great models, decent rules. give the nids a second chance!

Yeah, but they just don't do it for me for some reason. I had a quick flick through the Tyrannid Codex before I finally bought the CSM one. I was open to change right up until I spent money, so your original post wasn't wasted

Best of luck with your CSM. I enjoy mine very much, and they enjoy playing against my younger brothers Blood Angles just as much as I am sure your CSM will enjoy playing against your brothers SW's
