Hey guys, I'm looking to stray away from my space marines, but seeing how so many models are being redone right now, I'm very skeptical about what army to start.... I don't want to start a new army only to find out a couple months later I'll need to replace my models.... What armies won't be having too much changed to them soon? Also interested in hearing which armies are safe to start for WFB also. Any good places to go to see what will be released this year or anything like that?

Thanks a lot for any info guys!

First of all, play an army you actually like (all of the following, preferably: the background fluff, the look of the army, and the way the army plays).

Second, if you're mainly going for "recently updated," that's easy. Not counting any loyalist or chaos space marines, the most recent army books are from most to least recent: Tyranids, Imperial Guard, Daemons, and Orks.

As a warning: Orks and Daemons can certainly be fun, but the codexes (codices?) were built and costed at least mostly based on 4th edition rules, and so are slightly harder to deal with (most people agree that the overall points cost of models has gone down at least a little in the most recent edition codexes). This isn't to say you can't build a Daemon or Ork army that can take on a standard Marine army played by an average player, but that you have to choose your units even more carefully than you would otherwise in order to get an effective army.

Orks are fun, easy to learn, and easy to use. There's a lot of potential for expansion with them, an amazing range of plastic kits, and one of the best codices in the game - rules, fluff, and balance-wise.

Right on.... Yah I've been kinda looking between IG and Tau.... Also been thinking about Skaven since I'm digging those new models.... Just don't like the mass of brown that it becomes once they're painted and grouped together. They don't look like fun to paint at all sadly.... Too bland imo.

If you don't want the codex or models to change while you start your army go with Dark Eldar...

DONT start dark eldar, they have an incredibly old codex and miniatures line, and people recommending them are simply joking that they'll never be updated.

As far as "I'll need new miniatures" You never will, don't worry about that. Minis will change, sometimes drastically, but the old ones are always welcome on the gaming table.

That said, the newest are still Tyranids, Guard, Daemons and Orks, although the daemons still have alot of outdated minis that cost alot of money for what they do in-game.

I would go with Orks on the ground that any models which aren't available can easily be converted from other models.

The Tyranid range is being refreshed but there are lots of the special characters and main Monstrous Creatures which don't have models so you need better conversion skills.

IG is the third choice on the grounds that they also have a recent codex and a pretty full range of models.

My final choice would be Tau because while the codex is old, the main models (FW, suits, and vehicles) are unlikely to change when a new codex is released.

My vote would go for Tyrannids on the basis that they have just had a codex redux and are therefore 'immune' to the curse of the redesign for a few years now. Plus they have had lots of lovely model updates, with more to come, meaning plastic instead of fiddly metal kits.

I've been out of the loop for a while. I take it that late 2010 for the nex codex has been pushed back indefiately again?

Congratulations, your dismissive and conclusory commentary has provided nothing to this discussion or the wider community on whose behalf you arrogantly presume to speak nor does it engage in any meaningful way the remark it lamely targets. But you did manage to gain experience points toward your next level of internet tough guy.

No-one knows. GW have a zero tolerance for leaks these days.

New DE greens have been shown at some events, but there is nothing definite about a release date for a new codex.

If anything, there are rumours that DE might get 'squatted'. I think that's just Internet scuttlebutt though.

I wouldn't worry too much about having out of style models. Both my armies use models that were designed, and in some cases actually cast, during the 80ies. Wich means I regularly fight against (and loose to) players who are younger than my minis. Now and then, there is an option or a combination of weapons that cannot be taken anymore, wich will make one or a few models unusable. For example in 2nd and 3d edition tyranid codex termagants could carry a strangleweb. In 4th edition there was no strangleweb option, so those models became useless. Now in 5th edition codex, termagants can carry stranglewebs again. It's not a big deal after all.

So I say go with DaveLs advice. Read some of the tacticas here on Dakka to understand better what each army does. Then read more of the background on the Lexicanum wiki. Look for things that makes you go "wow, that's awesome!".

Tyranids, might be a bit much since as stated above a good chunk of their better models aren't modeled yet and you'll need to build them from scatch or other kits and bash them together.

Imperial Gaurd
Orks
Daemons

All of these would be a good choice for a second army, unless you're up for the challenge tyranids will bring.

Awesome thanks for the replies guys. Ya, I know how all the armies work pretty much. I personally go "irk" when I don't have the most up to date models.... Even though I don't really need to lol.

How are the Tau looking right now? They getting replacements any time soon other than the battlesuits I've been hearing about?

Hard to tell... The Tau codex could certainly use an overhaul, and they got some screen time in the latest Tyranid codex, wich means that they are at least not left to die forgotten in a dirty corner.

But I think the basic models are quite good. Nice, clean and techy in a particular way. Simply they doesn really need an update. So when they get a new codex, I'd guess more variant models, rather than models replaced.

Tau are pretty good because even if the stuff they have does get replaced(not likely), they still look insanely cool. The only real think which ever changed about them was the stealthies, and everyone I know says that they like both looks. Taking this to mind, the future promises perfect visual coherency as well as hopefully some more options: compared to many other armies there just aren't enough choices.
