I did a recent pole on P&M and the chapter name Templars Errant won, I am not fully satisfied.

Post your ideas for chapter names, preferably close to the one listed above.

They are loyalist marines that were sent by the Emperor on a crusaide far off from the imperium, they recently returned to imperial space, dissapointed at what they saw.
After being checked out by the inquisition it was descoverd that they had the same terminator armour as the GK's, they were the first to test it out. They are a completly self sufficient chapter that operates out of a massive starship* that is currently docked above Titan, the homeworld of the grey knights.

* Its hangar holds 8 battle barges and 14 strike cruisers + a variaty of attack ships. It is the home of the chapter.

if it's posted above titan, it's name is probably "Dust space marines", "Vapor Marines" or "Former space marines", as it would have been blasted out of orbit...

Oh, forgot to mention, After the Inquisition checked them out so did the Grey kights, finding no traces of taint, the grey knights grandmaster suggested an audience with Their chapter master (still figurin out his name too). And also, when a ship that can launch 8 strike cruisers is docked in orbit, you generally dont want to mess with it, oh and debries would rain down + a plasma reactor that massive exploding would completly wipe Titan off the map, nothing would be left.

What Sector are they based in, given that many Templars in the Crusades had names after the places which their Chapter House resided.

Your new to this whole fluff game, aintcha? Firstly, SMs using GK armour is a no. Docking around Titan is a no(that is place is incredibly holy, slightly below Mars and Terra).
We need more info on the chapter itself. Whats there battle style? What founding are they? How are they led? Any Gene-seed flaws? What?

Have to agree Grey Knights equipment being used by a normal marine chapter Sounds a bit too far seeing as ONLY grey knights use it. Plenty of other ways for you to define your chapter though.

For a name how about - The Redeemers. Since they've been inspected by the inquisition and Grey knights and found to be free of any obvious taint.

Plus Sol is meant to be so heavily fortified its not funny. Even a Carrier level battle-barge you suggest could likely get held off by what ancient defenses titan has on it.

Why not just pick a color, and/or an animal? throw in "knights" or "warriors" or something similarly manly and poof, new chapter? The Silver Platypus Knights is taken though...

One of the things you might consider to help your back story a little more is to think of a flaw, even one that's only perceived by the chapter itself.

I mean, let's face it, the Ultramarines are the most boring chapter due in part to that particular hue of blue...it's so blaaaaaah...and also the whole: "We're the bestest, awesome chapter, evar!"

Let's look at some of the more popular (at least story/fluff wise):
Dark Angels: Betrayed in their past.
Blood Angels: Insanity is their future.
Space Wolves: Fleas are their eternity

They all have that something that makes them seem like there's something more there, something worth taking a second look to make out more details.

As a grey knight player, i have to agree with the others on the whole grey knight termi armor thing. The reason being on titan the grey knights have there personel armorers and that the adeptis mechanis that created the armor only realeased it to the grey knights. Just throwing that out there. Other wise i would put a lot of thought into maybe some other fluff.

yeah but once upon a time, there were no grey knight terminators figs, and people just used normal termies to represent them. I don't see why that can't be a reverse scenario. I mean, a million worlds, right?

I just really like GK termie armour, and for the purpose of rules, I have a GK grandmaster attached to my sm army, and yes I am new to the fluffing. Maby you could help me with the fluff, as well as the name.

How about the "Fiery loins"?

First off it's possible, according to the current codex, to take a small amount of Grey Knights with the marines. Second, I've thought of doing grey knight models for terminators. With the space wolf codex where you can take so many storm bolters and power weapons it's possible to use those options. If it were me I'd probably send the chapter through some time warp. A space anomaly of some sort. They are off on a crusade and come back and suddenly it's a few hundred or thousand years later.

Chapter names are really hard to think of as they usually come off as stupid (Avenging Turtles) or derivative (Blood Ravens).

I spent ages before I came up with Iron Knights (only to find out that they did exist...), the Golden Lions (who I still don't like the way it sounds when you say it - symmetrical syllables and all that) and the Storm Riders (and that's derivative). And then there's the two Chapters in our Dark Heresy campaign - the Iron Paladins and the Emerald Vipers. They're ok, but yeah, they still sound like a Chapter Name Generator made them.

You should look up the rules for Battle Fleet Gothic, because the mothership you just describe would be as large as the Deathstar. Not even the Phalanx, the Imperial Fists' crusade vessel is that large. A Battle-barge can hold and deploy 3 companys of Marines at once, which is why most Chapters have 2-3 of them.

Also, no Space Marine chapter that they aren't sure about is going to be let anywhere near the Sol system.

The Grey Knights were a Second Founding Chapter, which means that only direct descendants of the original 8 are as old as them (Flesh Tearers, Black Templar, etc.). There isn't a "test version" of the Aegis Armor, unless you count the Mk 5.

You could do something like they have increased rate of the Piriah gene, which deserved investigation by the Inquisition. The chapter be particularly devoute, and attribute their warp-resistance to that. The Inquisitors would have them inducted a Grey Knights detatchment to train the Chapter in using their Piriah gened initiates to the fullest. You could also have them hold a special reverance for older versions of Power Armor, like the Mk 5. You could even have Mk 4 and 3 Relic Armor for your commanders. You could have them running around as a Crusade Fleet looking for daemonic infestation and rooting them out.

Anyway, I vote for something like the Agents of Purity, or Servants' Argent (meaning they're as pure a servant as their heraldry is white).

Also their ship is doesn't seem like a ship but a mobile space fortress.

I translated Void Slayers into latin and something like this came up - inritus trucido, preety cool in my opinion, for my marines and chaos marines I always pick a name in latin, sounds very sophisticated and distinguished.

IIRC Vanus was akin to mean empty so you could use that word aswell..

As for names.. Latin always has a nice ring to it...

Semper Fidelis? no wait I think that one's taken too. What about a single word name? Like Carnivorus, Exterminus, Absolutus, (anything ending with -us?). Well maybe not Tapiocus but mmm... tapioca pudding is good... I digress.

Regarding the GK termie armor I agree they do look quite cool. Older chapter armor is common in all Marine chapters, which is why there's so many beakies around, and even the plastic guys from AoBR have a smattering of different armor styles, and mismatched pieces (Mk.VII helmet with Mk.VI greaves for instance). I think the rationale behind this is that all of their armor is sacred to them, and passed along if it is repairable, and so bits and pieces could end up anywhere really. Considering that terminator suits are even more prized and revered as relics, it is possible that those terminator suits were brought to the chapter with a contingent of Grey Knights eons ago, who died in the battle, but their suits carry on and are revered and blessed and all that. Just a thought.

Since it is mentioned in the fluff (Space marine codex) that it is not known if the Grey knights were created during the second founding (they arn't listed) or made by the emperor before the heresy.

Your chapter could fit the fluff of before the heresy. they were some of the original Grey Knights. this would explain why you have GK armor and a close tie between your chapters.

i would reccomend moving your ship from titan to somwhere else. The Grey Knights technically don't exist and a starship that size would attract alot of Mechanicus attention in that direction and by logic the High lords of Terra. A ship that big would be the size of titan itself so it would be hard to miss.

Come to the galactic core. My chapter is there and its a big place. nice dense star clusters, lots of xeno and heritics to kill, and your could actually hide there.

I would think fringe would be a better place to be unnoticed though. The Imperium doesn't even know how many chapters there are any more so they wouldn't be too persnickety about one little fleet (granted, big ships, but still theres a lot of ships to keep track of).

Just as a forinstance from the codex, supposedly the Novamarines were scattered by a warp storm and nobody knows if they still exist, or maybe founded new chapters, or who knows? That's kind of the point of the intentional ambiguity of fluff without rewriting pre-existing fluff. If you can explain it, no prob, right?

I actually like the thought of an entirly warp inert chapter! I also like GK armour. Grey Templar said that the admech guys would be all over a ship such as the one I described, sooooo I think they would get in sol after being checked over by the Inq. and the GK's, also I believe that they could have armour similar in looking as GK on the outside, but being inert to the warp would mean that they wouldn't have to go through the procsess of warding. Lexx came up with the name Redeemers, and I liked it, but I took it a little bit further with some latin:

Knights Redemptio (meaning knights of redemption or Knights Redempt)

I like it, but if you think you have a better name post it, and please point out flaws in my reasons above so I can correct them

I do think you should seriously revise your 'big ship' though. A chapter simply wouldn't have the man power to run that ship, not to mention all of the auxilary craft. Something twice the size of a Battlebarge, sure. Something that can dock 8 Battlebarges at once, not so much.
