I always liked the Star Child fluff in the old Realms of Chaos book;
According to background revealed in the Realm of Chaos books, hidden within the Warp is an entity called the Star Child, which not unlike the potential Eldar god Ynnead is a nascent god waiting to be born. Through the Star Child the Emperor will be reborn.
After the defeat of Horus, the Emperor's soul is said to have dispersed from his maimed body, merging into the Warp. A tiny fraction of the Emperor's soul remained whole, awaiting to be reborn once more. This is the Star Child.

Finally when all is said and done, because all the races would be destroyed the Chaos Gods would no long exsist because then their would be no more emotion with in the universe.
So in Short.
EVERYONE would lose. Just like now.
They don't need human emotions constantly. I'm sure they'd save up all of the fear and pain of humanity in their last years and eventually use it when the time was right. Also, I'm sure if they wanted to, they could move on to another species and tap into their emotions, like the tyranids. I always thought it would be cool for there to be an "anti- hive mind", one that uses their hunger and bloodlust and turns it into something more terrible and intelligent.
The orks could possibly be taken advantage of, if chaos was terribly desperate...The other races would be meaningless to them, in terms of quantity.
Why do any of you even assume that chaos can be defeated? It cannot! You cannot kill the chaos gods, nor can you completely block out the warp from them. They'll always win in the end. Key word there is "THE END". They might seem to be losing, but they're just biding their time..Waiting for the right moment....

I do not assume, I know.
Nothing is invincible.
Chaos "gods" were created , and could be undone.
Why don't they enter themselves into "realspace" but send their minions?
Maybe they could not live here?
What do they win? Eternal imprisonment in their own reality........
Since 40k is about a Galaxy and the material plane and its inhabitants, anyone exiled forever doesn't win.

The point about the Astronomicon being gone it's fading according to the fluff anyways Also in one of the bloodraven novels they have something on their ship which sends out a similar thing though would take a while to find it again, hence I'm not going to just now
The Emperor is a figurehead anyways, just a mythical figure of power not really tangible to many in the Imperium so I think even on his death absoloute nothing would really change. After all, chaos existed before the Emperor right?

Erm, I'm positive it was in the future he was born from the fluff I've read. Around the time of the techno barbarians and all that. Still all my older stuff is currently still packed in boxes etc so will have a nosey around sometime this week for references. Oh and the Goto books were surprisingly readable and the 2nd and 3rd well written. I did think when picking it up it was going to be expensive toilet paper but it didn't prove to be the standard of some of the D&D novels out there, even considering reading other warhammer novels published since the mid 90's now

Actually, it is highly unlikely that the E dying is a bad thing.
if he dies, his spirit will enter the warp and be reborn as a God(Starchild theory) and all 4 gods of Chaos will be in for a serious @$$ tuning.
So in essense the Emperor being kept alive is the only thing that is keeping him from wopping Chaos. he is still "anchored" in the physical realm.
if he enters the Warp proper the Astronimican might actually become brighter.
Starchild is the theory with the most evidence to back it up.
Next in line is the Horus/E switcharoo conspiracy.

How can we even know that the Emperor existed in the first place? Hell it was a thing that happend 10k years ago, maybe he is just a myth! (Yes I am using a theological argument often applied to other deities.)

A better explanation is that the emperor still has all his power, but his body wasted away infornt of preety much everyone. Would the Imperium crumble into small empires and have to be runited. Would systems go renegade. And what about the SoB. Would it be mass genocide, or would they kill themselves. And the Space marines, the guard, the Machine cult, everyone really, what would they do?
The astronomican would die and warp travel for the imperium would be suicide, putting the whole thing to square 1 like when the emperor first went about fixing humankind

actually the Astronomican wouldn't die as it is the Emperors psychic beacon in the Warp.
Emperor dies, Spirit Enters the Warp, Astronomican is possably clearer.

I agree on this. If the emperors body truly dies he becomes the star-child. In the interim of the star childs birth and assertion a mini new dark age of man erupts (you'd need some time to remember / adjust to how things work if you'd been in a near coma that long! ). Factional infighting and vendettas take to the fore. The reborn emperor/star child breaks it up once hes done beating up the chaos gods and a new unification war begins.

Assuming the Astronomicon remains in place along with the barrier to daemonic incursion (as the OP has determined) then I dont' think much changes. The Emp hasn't given orders or directives in 10k years. And the people of the Imperium don't pray to his body, they pray to his omnicient spirit. The Ecclesiarchy would doubtlessly spin the physical death in such a way that the faithful would continue to hold true to the spirit of the Emperor, which is really what they already worship.

The Emperor is now an eldar-like God. He exists because 1 quadrillion people believe he does. Those quadrillion people believe the Emperor is protecting them and so he does; but essentially Humanity is protecting itself from by believing its protected.

Tied and gagged in the back of your car
|
I don't bless them
Farewell to this land's cheerless marshes
Hemmed in like a boar between arches
Her very Lowness with a head in a sling
I'm truly sorry - but it sounds like a wonderful thing
I said Horus, don't you ever crave
To appear on the front of the Daily Mail
Dressed in your Emperor's bridal veil ?
Oh ...
And so, I checked all the registered historical facts
And I was shocked into shame to discover
How I'm the 18th pale descendant
Of some old Emperor or other
Oh, has the galaxy changed, or have I changed ?
Oh has the galaxy changed, or have I changed ?
Some 9-year old tough who peddles xenos tech
I swear to his holiness
I swear : I never even knew what xenos tech were
Oh ...
So, I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a chainsword
She said : "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said : "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano"
We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry
And talk about precious things
But when you're tied to your Emperor's apron
No-one talks about genetic enhancement
Oh ...
We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry
And talk about precious things
Like love and law and poverty
Oh, these are the things that kill me
We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry
And talk about precious things
But the rain that shines my bald scalp ...
Oh, these are the things that kill me
All their lies about make-up and long hair, are still there
Past the guard enlistment station who saps your body
And the ecclesiary who'll snatch your money
The Emperor is dead, boys
And it's so lonely on a limb
Past the carnifex that wrecks your body
And the ecclesiary - all they want is your money
The Emperor is dead, boys
And it's so lonely on a limb

Two Necrons would win because their "work" is to shut off the warp from realspace, killing almost every sentient being is just a bonus.
