My first post was on February 25, 2012, five days after I joined Dakka. I had only been painting for a month and I posted a picture of a chaplain w/jump pack in the Showcase thread. I still have that mini on my shelf too.

This is my oldest post on the current forums, back on Mar 1st, 2006. I posted frequently before, but there was a server upgrade or something and all Dakka posts prior to that were lost and the forums were essentially reset.
I found a selection of "industrial" bases from Champ Industries which are useable for Necromunda/40k and was wondering what (if any) other plastic bases are available? I know the variety is better with resin, but I prefer plastic where possible.
I have spent some time thinking about those old favorites, Squats. Taking a cue from Hollywood, I realize that a direct port from 2nd edition/Epic would not be adequate for 4th edition 40K. As a result, I decided to Re-imagine them. I have attached a link to another site with the background information. I would post the attachements here, but I do not see how?

They were swapped to Lego's servers after Yakface bought the name at auction. You'd probably have to ask the Russ God what happened to the old servers.
Since Slayers always count Strength as equal to Toughness after weapon bonuses, is there any advantage to taking Great Weapons over Extra Hand Weapons?

Manchu wrote: Allying with certain xenos is obviously not unthinkable. In a similar vein, certain abhumans are tolerated inside the ranks of the Guard. But it is pretty naive to assert that the Imperium would profit in the long term from formal alliances with aliens. Aliens in 40k are not the humans-by-any-other-forehead found in Star Trek. They are actually, literally alien: their motives and purposes are truly divergent from those of humanity. Xenos and humanity cannot be reconciled.
If two enemies are fighting only to find a third, more threatening enemy attack them both it is certainly smart to join together for the moment to defeat the newcomer. Some of you seem to assume that the natural consequence is that those two enemies would continue to stand together against other potential third parties. You forget, however, that there was a good reason they were fighting in the first place.
As to Space Marines: Even when they were organized into vast Legions, Space Marines Chapters were hardly monolithic. Indeed, even all the Legions together constituted a small force relative to the scope of the Great Crusade. But they were never intended to be monolithic. That is why there were twenty Primarchs. Perhaps the Emperor never intended them to be scattered and so develop such divergent personalities (we will probably never know) but it stands to reason that they were not intended to be mere extensions of the Emperor's own personality. The Chapters, in other words, were not supposed to be merely the most efficient instrument of the Emperor's will but rather individual, personalized, and competitive. Why else give over Legions to the Primarchs, whom the Emperor clearly knew (at least upon meeting them) were all quite different, and then picking a favorite? Finally, Space Marines are not fighting each other anymore--rituals aside. So why all this hate? Sounds like you want Space Marine Chapters to fit snuggly into the realm of the bureaucratic authority like IG regiments. Never gonna happen.
Sounds like we have plenty of basement MBAs here doomcasting any move GW makes.
Can't GW cut a line of old poorly selling miniatures because they simply aren't that profitable? What many of you fail to understand is that just because something may technically make a "profit" it might not be worth the time or effort. Star product lines such as 40k can actually be hurt by attention being redirected away from them to keep a collectors range slowly grinding along.
Consider this scenario: Everyday there magically appears $10 in a box which is a 1 hour drive from your house. So you go and drive to the box and grab the $10, but it cost you $5 in gas. Congratulations you made a profit of $5..... but was it really worth an hour of your time and the potential wear and tear on your vehicle?
^^ The collectors line and specialist games follow the same principle, time and effort can be put to use developing and selling more profitable products. It is much easier to follow a simplified organizational strategy when you don't have all these random bits trailing off in all directions.
Found my first post. 9 AM in the morning... while I was at work.
Hey, the boss knew I was futzing about on the internet. He was cool with it, as long as I kept up with any faxed orders that came in (I checked every 15 minutes) and dropped everything when a customer came in the door.
Anywho, here's the goods...
squidhills wrote: I may be late, but I'd like to weigh in all the same...
There are several reasons for the preponderance of white dudes in the 41st millenium. Firstly, as has been said, GW is made up of pasty white British blokes. Unconsiously, these guys just paint up white guys. Partly because it doesn't occur to them that unless the army is specifically ethnic (White Scars) it can be a color other than white. And partly because I'm sure on some level they wish they were the guys in the power armor.
Secondly, non-white skin is a pain to paint with GW paints. I've tried it. I know people who have tried it. Most of them go back to painting white dudes cause it's easier. I'm kind of stuck because I want my Tallarn army to look fething Middle Eastern, instead of looking like the studio army, ie: a bunch of white dudes dressed like Lawrence of Arabia.
I still haven't got the skin tones to look right >.<
Thirdly, they may be overly-concerned about the possibility of a discrimination-based lawsuit. Basically, the White Scars are Mongolian Horse Raiders, because the Mongolian Horse Raiders are no longer around to sue them if they get offended by GW's portrayal of them. But black people are still around, and they might take offence at GW's portrayal of Salamanders as being a bunch of black guys, so they retcon them into beefy Drow.
Are/were black people offended by the portrayal of black people as Salamanders? I don't know any who were. I know one who picked up a Salamanders army specifically because they were black. But I don't know anyone who complained about it. That doesn't mean that GW's lawyers weren't concerned about the possibility. They make a fair chunk of money in the USA, and we tend to be a little lawsuit-crazy over here. Maybe that was their concern. Or maybe some white jackass showed up at a Grand Tourney with a Salamanders army led by O.J. Simpson, and ruined it for the rest of us.
So the retcon of Salamanders from black guys to Drow probably wasn't "We is GW and we hates us some black people, hur hur..." it was probably more "Oh crap, if somebody says the Salamders are racist, we could end up fighting off a lawsuit and bad publicity. Better make 'em Drow. Drow can't sue us! BRILLIANT!"
That addresses the preponderance of white dudes in the art and in the models. Yes, the written works and the video games are much more ethnically diverse, but the face of Warhammer that most people see is the artwork and the models. The books are for those of us that are hard-core. We read them and know that Warhammer isn't racist.
Your parents don't read the books and only look at the pictures and think "Sure are a lot of white guys in the future..." It's these people that I think would be most likely to see racism where there is none, as they are not involved in the hobby, and therefore don't know all the details, like the fact that most Marines have skin that automatically changes color depending on the amount of UV radiation (sunlight) they are exposed to (it's one of their genetic implants... check the 3rd edition SM codex). Yeah, the Salamanders and Raven Guard got stuck on the Drow and Emo settings, but that's part of their visual character now.
Is it all really racism? I don't think so. Not anymore than it's misogyny that there are so few female IG models, despite fluff stating that there are many women in the Guard, too. Yes, it can look like racism from some angles, and it certainly doesn't help when the occasional depiction of a non-white person does show up (Codex: Jungle Fighters, I'm looking at you) to highlight just how rare those depictions are. But if I thought the game was run by Neo-Nazis, the Klan, or the Aryan Brotherhood, I would drop GW like a syphilitic Daemonette, and start playing Warmahordes in an instant.

Caledonian 95th (undergoing regimental reorganization)

I love that APC model. I would buy at least six upon release. After all, the 120+ Eisenkern stormtroopers I've pledged for need to ride in style!
And, for the record, I ordered 9 of the APCs (and 3 each of the two variants).

Just coming back to 40k after a long (13 years!) hiatus - in the process of setting up/painting a decent-sized Black Templar Army, and know a few other guys with other armies - just wondering if there's anyone in North Manchester looking for a battle or two.
Back then we could barely imagine the horrors to follow...
Instead of giving rough riders a default explosive hunting lance, it might be better to give them each a lascarbine (it's made up but it could be range 18 inches, strength 3, AP - and assault 2). They then could be given upgrades in a similar way to Space Marine bikers.e g. Melta guns). One of these upgrades could be a lance. By doing this, it would extend the rough riders role on the battlefield from cavalry charging (which tends to lead to annihilation or heavy casualties among the riders) to other roles, such as tank busting, harrasing flanks with small arms fire and act as outriders for transport vehicles (by this I mean preventing enemy close assaults using ranged weaponry, and yet keeping up with the vehicle/tank). With this simple modification to the rule, the tactical diversity of the riders will, in conclusion be increased, enabling them to accompany more types of Imperial Guard forces and thus make them a more popular choice for any Imperial Guard player.

I apologise for my comment regarding the special weapons, but i still believe the idea for the lascarbines is valid

The small pens do help, I have some proper refillable drafting/graphic artist pens that are excellent for that.
Though, I also have to do white on black so the long but tiny point brush always works (needs to be long to keep a reservoir of paint).
The method is make a fancy tiny letter to start off then tiny squiggles or I found if you are careful, many tiny vertical lines in groups for words.
Making columns and obvious paragraph structures make it look all the more real.
See below as some examples, I am no expert by any means but looks good for gaming purposes.
Hope this helps.

My first post was on September 26, 2009 and contained this:
Hello folks,
I am working on building an Imperial Guard army using the old Praetorian miniatures from the 90's. I currently have Drew Olds from Garden Ninja Painting working on this army as quickly as I can locate and send Praetorian miniatures out to him to be painted. He does wonderful work and thus far has knocked out around 25 figures for me along with two tanks.
Last night I finished painting the new GW Battlescape terrain piece and thought it would be fun to take some "action" shots of my Praetorians crossing it.
I hope you enjoy these. I will be posting more pictures as the army grows and I finish up a few more terrain projects.
This is a really cool terrain piece which was a lot of fun to paint. I left the equally cool rifle memorial bit off the terrain to be used as an IG themed objective marker.
To reiterate, the models were painted by Garden Ninja Painting and the terrain was painted by me.
