Looks SSOOOOO cool, I'm glad I could revitalize your project and this thread!
Name for him huh? Hmmmmm not sure how good I'll be at this, mine are usually called something like Brother 2-7-3 (2nd company, 7th unit, 3rd marine). But something that has to do with being with other marines would be nifty. Brother Walks-with-other-guys-that-are-still-the-same-but-totally-different sounds a bit long winded. Told you I was bad at naming.

@tony_nids - they have a half finished razorback, I have just totally stalled on building a chapter symbol to mount on the doors and front armour, will get on it eventually....

@fifty - I had not thought of the "kings" angle, could be a good title for the battle leaders though I was looking for a native american name for the captains. From the collaborative fluff we have developed on this plog I don't think these guys have a very close relationship with the emperor TBH. I like the idea of the "long manes" being the Vets as "long Fangs" is kiind of redundant when you are talkiing about sabreteeth And I have locked in Iron Shaman, Rune Shaman, etc for my preist equivilants as well as Pride instead of Pack after getting so many good ideas from my "name my chapter" portion of the blog, thanks for all ideas tho fifty always appreciated.

@finch claw - Thanks Finch, Space wolf succesors are nothing new but I hope I have put my own spin on them

@captain Vyper - Cheers man!

@whalemusic360 - Like the idea of referencing the fact he is with another chapter something like "walks-among-strangers" or "Runs-in-the-Void"?

@Good-Green - I will take off his arms and take a close up of his medicine bag and tokens for ya, I'm hoping the base comes out ok I am never sure what to extend over the edge of the base and what top leave contained, in this case I had the skull kind of coming out of the side of the base as if it was a exposed from a rock face or hillock of dirt...if that makes sense?

cheers,

BLACKHAND

Also, I'm not sure if you want to go with two lionhead shoulderpads. Isn't the other shoulder pad for squad markings?

@Anung un Rama - I knew you were lurking here somewhere!
Ok, Ok I will invest in a smaller drillbit and bore out the guns I guess its time.. and about the shoulderpads, I get the feeling that people really like the custom pads, in my own squads the lion pad signifies the Lion guard status and the other shoulder has markings to show acheivments...I hadn't really thought about squad markings I can probably use paint for that, maybe colouring the purity feathers to show which squad they belong to.

@whale music- No worries, it is just laziness on my part as my 2 year old snapped my last 1mm drillbit against my leg (she was "helping Daddy paint") I will track a new one down and get that barrel sorted

Cheers

I must've missed that he was supposed to be a veteran. I guess in that case 2 lion shoulder pads are adequate.

I held off doing marines for a long time too Agro but I kinda like them now, despite the clumsy and disporportioned armour you can get quite a lot of character into your models.
I am also looking forward to using troops who don't melt under any kind of fire (Go Guard!)

I don't want to drop a project half way through plus I promised myself i would see my army through until I get at 2000 points and win a few games. so far i only have won a single game due to my ally's avatar destroying everything in its path.

It also sucks not having a job. 1 day I shall post a thread on my guard. so I think it may be awhile before I go for a differnt army so i will just have to admire other peoples fine work.

Sorry to derail the thread...

Ok so I thought I would upload some WIPs a bit earlier than expected

First up is the marine I am starting for Tony_Nids_10, wanted to see how much movement I could get without resorting to an assault marine's legs and figured that by giving him some uneven terrain and having him balance on it while aiming I might get the movement I wanted.

He need shortening at the waist and the left arm may get tucked closer to the torso, and of course the GS work on the gun arm is only a third done but you get the idea

Next is the marine I am building for Gitsplitta..and he needs a bit of explanation.
I've been a real fan of Git's two blogs since he started them and his "Doom Eagle Odyssey" blog has given me much hope that I may eventually have a son interested in the hobby (or failing that perhaps my daughter will get into it, she already helps daddy paint by tipping my paint jars on the desk and finger painting the walls..why blazing orange? why?) Anyhoo I have been tempted to build my version of a mantis warrior for a while and send it to splitta but this project has given me the perfect excuse to send my regards without stepping on his toes by hijacking his chapter!

So without further waffling I present to you

"Leads-the-Pride"...

Why is his hand waving around like that? is he just happy to see us?

No, he is waving on his two young charges, brave young warriors who have been chosen to join the ranks of the Sabre Legion and fight for the rest of their lives in the unending wars of the Imperium...

I built a decorative base for the three figures but the all pop out as you can see....

I probably should have waited till I had a paint job on the tribesman that showed them off better but hey it's late and I have been working on them all day I want to get some feedback

Cheers,

BLackhand

The first one looks really weird. Much too thin for a Marine, but I don't know why, all the parts seem to be in order.

Leads-the-pride looks cool, but the name goes a bit too far imo. And what will the tribesman be gamewise?

I know what you mean about thinness of the first one, I can compact the waist and neck a bit so that it looks more "mariney" but I am also pondering leaving him lithe and fast looking...will have to see how he looks after I add the sabre legion tokens and purity feathers.

As for Leads-the-Pride, the name is a reference to Gitspltta and his self appointed task of teaching his two sons to paint, model and play 40k. As such the tribesmen have no rules and are really a gift to Splitta nd his kids..hopefully one that will keep them both motivated to play and play.

FYI the two tribesmen started off life as ratskins from necromunda and their spears came from the skaven sprue.

Very, very cool Blackhand, I am honored & the boys will be thrilled at being immortalized in a 40k model.

Will have to think up something suitable to do in return... tall order considering your talents. Can I somehow make a mantis warrior that would fit into your Sabre Legion, or just freelance a shelf piece for you... or perhaps a MW themed objective marker (a rescue of some sort)? I want to finish Styro's before I move on to yours (one at a time is about all I can handle), so give it some thought... there's time yet. I seem to do my best creative thinking if I at least have a general idea of where I want to end up... getting there is the fun part. (Road Trip!!!)

Oh, and never worry about stepping on my toes. Having someone else take up the Mantis Warriors and do them (even a single model) with their own unique spin would be extremely satisfying. I'm definitely not the territorial kind.

Blackhand - I finally got through all of your posts. There is a lot of good stuff in here. I like your Sabre Legion quite a bit. Keep up the good work! The only comment that I'd like to add is that your pictures have all come out rather dark. I don't know what your set up is but it seems like you're not getting enough light on your guys. I'd like to be able to admire then a little bit more. That's my only two cents, lol.

Yeah I know, the automatic adjust function on dakka seems to darken them quite a bit I'm starting to wonder if I should use it at all.

FYI I use two lamps at different angles with a piece of paper behind my models, cheap man's lighting box

Sorry Newt!

I have actually been painting, albeit slowly, and on a model that will soon be winging it's way to the states to join Whalemusic360's marine task force.

I also got a bit sidetracked with a tutorial I did for casting resin shoulderpads

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/307451.page

Oh and I saw somoe pics of the new Island of Blood warhammer starter set and I dug out my old skaven bitz and started playing around giving them lasguns, I have an urge to buy a couple of the new Island boxes to give me some cool command models and rat ogryn for my ratguard

but yeah I'm kinda painting

BLACKHAND - Do you already have or are you going to be making a skaven imperial guard army?

That sounds like fun!

With the new island of blood models I am definitely considering it, so far I don't have many built just some rat subscripts in my guard army.
about half way down this page is the model who will become my general

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/60/257417.page

and just down this page are my rat snipers

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/120/257417.page

My plan is to slowly convert and add more skaven till they make up the entire army...the real dilema is whether to skavenify my existing tanks and vehicles or buy new ones and convert those, expensive though.

The idea of a chimera or russ with a screaming bell attached is pretty appealing too

I hear the talk about blood island and a skaven/imperial army sounds nuts, how about warpfire throwers on sentinals?

Thats the thing , there are a lot of possibilites with the models, the heavy weapon teams already come in pairs and can easily be converted to carry 40k guard weapons, I have a vague idea of massive rats with back mounted weapons for sentinels but we will see, the imagery of broken and salvaged masonry chained to tanks is very interesting as well I think it would be a very unique look
