I like the cultist. Is that a spot or two to match the Tyranid scheme I see on his head?

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Sure is, good eyes. I've replicated the dot patterning, clustered towards the top/back of his skull. You can see it better at the end of the tutorial video I just uploaded:

And on an unrelated note, I did a speedpaint job this week on some Tau planes for Aeronautica Imperialis. I quite enjoy this game and hope GW continues to support it.

Had an interesting game of testing 9th last weekend, and just realized I forgot to post any pictures.

Hive Fleet Karkinos took on my buddy's Imperial Fists. It's a 30K army, so he had to proxy a bit (using Breachers as Tacticals, for example), but was able to build a generally well-rounded army. We each targeted 1750pts, as the 9th Ed costs hadn't leaked yet, assuming this would be around 2000pts.

Well, he got the first turn and zipped his Storm Eagle into my backfield, killing half the Hive Guard and some Warriors- then I managed to blow up his Storm Eagle in a lucky round of shooting, then kill all the Assault Marines it was carrying, knocking out a third of his army. From there he was pinned in his deployment zone, unable to push forward without losing his cover benefits. I then slowly ground down the defenders, until the final Fist died by the end of Turn 4.

I found that I really enjoy most of the changes in 9th. In particular, it was very clear that a static battle plan guarantees a loss on primary objectives, so gunlines or clustered-up aura bubbles are going to have to adapt or die.

Under the new points, my list came to about 2030pts, and his came to just over 1900. I don't think an extra hundred points would have changed the outcome of our game, but it at least means his Firstborn aren't being totally screwed by 9th, so that's something.

Currently, I am working on another three Zoanthropes so as to finish the full brood of 6, then probably changing gears to work on some Stormtroopers. With vehicles being able to move and shoot Heavy without penalty, it's looking like the Vendetta is back on the menu.

Though if i may, can one really make an army just out of tyranid warriors?

Thanks! Regarding Warriors, Insectum has a great project log for a Warrior heavy army. In terms of gameplay optimization, they unfortunately really lean on Adaptive Physiology and a particular stratagem to be cost-effective, but I've been finding that the increased emphasis on midfield in 9th has given them more opportunities to use both their shooting and melee abilities, which makes them a lot more useful than they previously were.

I've been sorely tempted to go all-in with a second brood of 9. Might still do it, once I make some headway on these Stormtroopers.

Warriors are also gonna be very good in 9th for VP reasons. With the VP-defense list-building rules in play (MSU multi-wound models, <3 Monsters, avoid Character Psykers like the plague) current Tyranid lists (Monsters and Psykers or carpet) are heavily discouraged.
Genestealers and 'Gants are out for giving up the Thin The Ranks secondary objective too easily. Warriors are tough and don't require character baby-sitting that gives up Assassinate. Welcome to the edition of MSU PEQ (Primaris Equivalent, aka W is more important than Sv).

Been a little while. I forgot to post the Stormtroopers I completed- the remaining 5 to finish out a quad-plasma squad.

This group took a while, as I felt compelled to convert each model to avoid having any clones of the special weapons.

(Not the best pic as I was framing out the walls in my basement at the time, so the photo setup was a bit improvised)

Anyways, the plan was to then finish up a group of 6 Raveners and The Red Terror to complete my Tyranids for the time being... but I got distracted by the delivery of my Mechanicum order, as I have recently been suckered into The Horus Heresy by a friend.

So, instead, I painted up a Castellax test. It only took about five hours, and I think will go a lot faster when painted in batches.

I really wanted to go for a gritty, weathered, Blanche-esque look, emphasizing the menacing nature of the Mechanicum/Mechanicus rather than quirky anachronisms. I amplified this feel by adding a heraldric shield from an old Grey Knights sprue, along with a homemade purity seal, which turned out to be a lot easier than I expected. I also wanted to use an oil wash, more transfers, and more weathering than I typically do; I feel I was successful in all of these efforts and am very pleased with the outcome. In particular, I'm very happy with the metallics, which involved no traditional highlighting- just a basecoat, acrylic wash, and oil wash, which speeds things up.

Great work on the bot, the added shield makes for a nice red counterpoint to the red shoulder pad

Always happy to see more of that generation of stormtrooper, good stuff. Fan of your yellow-orange plasma glow as well, pretty distinct as plasma goes!

Nice work on converting those plasma troopers. I've recently finished off a squad of those old boys painted up as inquisitorial stormtroopers and I don't imagine they would be easy models to convert.

The Castellax is beautifully done! I really like the addition of the shield and the carapace has an almost nautical vibe to it, almost live an old diving bell.

Lovely work on the troopers, but the robot does it for me. It looks great and with exactly the right amount of weathering!

Thanks all! I was going to batch-paint six Raveners and The Red Terror to finish up the Nids (until they get a new codex, at least), but I quickly discovered that having the arms attached to TRT makes it impossible to pattern the carapace, so it's back in the stripper.

That means I'm doing the Raveners and then, probably, more Mechanicum. I'm really happy with how easy the test model was and am looking forward to more.

And I'm back, with another three robots, and a background that lets those of you with poor contrast calibration actually see them

I'm really having fun with these. Using weathering, transfers, and an oil wash in lieu of lots of tedious manual highlighting really makes these go quickly. I think the metal came out great for being just washes.

Man those are sweet models. Ive been drooling over some of the ad mech/HH offering on FW website a lot lately haha..

Are they any good in the game ? (not a HH player)

Also been thinking about that tyranid army more and more...

As a theoritcal, out of interest, have you done any trials with your method using different colours or did you drive for the coconut crab look off the bat ? If so do you have any test runs kicking about ?

What colours could work to be similar but much more vivid/Avatar- esqeue?

I'm trying to picture the colour pallette that could work, but just cant seem to visualise anything... I like contrasty stuff but dont want to do more Black & yellow coz i have plenty of that headache with my Eldar and also would like to do something different..

I'm considering hunting for a cheap box of gaunts and going to town with some wild throwing darts at the colour wheel and seeing what sticks hahah

P.S. Yes, I watched your Peacock shrimp vid. And im wondering if you got anymore awesomeness stashed up your sleeve

They're pretty fun. The ones with the Mauler bolt cannons (stubby guns) are heavy bolters, but wounding Marines on 2s and ignoring their armor. The ones with the Darkfire cannons (longer guns) ignore Terminator armor and S7 with the Lance rule (treat armor values higher than 12 as 12), so they can potentially pop any tank in the game. Both variants can be upgraded to hit on 2s and degrade enemy cover saves.

I was going to say, the peacock mantis shrimp would seem to fit the bill. I did a video on a blue coconut crab scheme, but that's also fairly monochrome.

The nice thing about the patterning is that you can insert pretty much any colors and it'll still work. There are some folks on the r/tyranids subreddit who have done interesting things with it; you might consider stopping over there and looking around.

Thanks guys, I really had a lot of fun with the robots. It was refreshing to spend more time thinking through the materials and the effect I wanted to achieve rather than figuring out the exact paints to use.

While I have three basecoated Thallax on my desk awaiting paint, I returned to my now-monthly habit of trying to find a skin recipe I like for my old collection of Ogres. This time, I think I've got it.

The breakthrough was taking the plunge on one of the Reaper triads, specifically their Golden Skin triad. In the past, I've had a lot of trouble finding paints that look good as subdued, natural flesh tones while keeping a consistent color tone throughout the highlighting steps. The Reaper triads promised a base, shade, and highlight with consistent color, and the Golden Skin triad looked a good fit for an East Asian tone (rather than the typically pink GW fleshtones), so I gave it a shot.

Unlike my usual techniques, there are no washes here, just tedious layering and really rough (honestly, should have spent more time on it) blending. I also added in a mix of the Reaper shade color and some VMC German Camo Pale Brown for the deepest shading to up the contrast a bit.

I think I might go back and add some Ivory to the highlight for some choice accents on the face and musculature, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

And after getting some feedback from my friends, I went back and added some glazes.

Here, the eureka moment was discovering that I can thin the Army Painter washes down with Vallejo's glaze medium to reduce their opacity without affecting the consistency like water does. This allowed me to pull it away from pooling on the upper muscles, minimizing the 'washed' look. I did two layers of a 4:1:1 mix of glaze medium, AP Flesh Wash, and AP Soft Tone.

Unfortunately there's just a little bit of unwanted staining, but that's because I foolishly didn't let the model cool from its 70C dehydrator sauna before applying the second layer. Oops. Lesson learned.

Oh, and for the sake of completeness, I did also add a final highlight step on the face and the wrinkled bits on the pecs before washing.

Next step is seeing if the scheme can be simplified at all.
