Hi everyone. I've been using this site for some months now and have got round to signing up. Great site by the way.
I've been painting Space Marines for about a year now, off and on, and when I get time.

As you lot seem like the knowledge fountain of all things warhammer i need your help naming my growing Space Marine army.
Any name ideas will be very welcome along with any background as i'm a complete newbie to this sort of thing, i only started as a model and painting hobby after getting some given to me. I have since expanded the army to a decent sized force now but I still have no name.
I was thinking along the lines off using the colour names like Red - Crimson - Scarlet - Blood or using the cross like Knights or Guard. As i said any ideas we be welcome and I will post the pics with the new name on banners and tanks etc.... Sorry for waffling on.

The chapter symbol is a cross with red line through it, an alteration of the templar symbol if your like.

It depends of the fluff for your chapter, what chapter are they meant to be sucessors of? What code will you be using, Vanilla? All of these things need to be considered.

Crimson Cross is alliterative and easy to say, though it may be a little bit more cheesy than you like. I got the idea from an elite organization from the LARP I play in, but that's going off on a tangent...

Your name should also be representative of your army's style and specialties, which we know nothing about and can't comment on. However, in your pictures I see a drop pod, plasma galore, and some cyborg bits, and they're red... Have you considered a rapid assault force with close ties to the Mechanicus? They can dive recklessly into combat and use dangerous experimental weaponry because they have a high ratio of Techmarines and can easily get bionic replacements if they get injured. Perhaps call them something like the Scarlet Hammers? That sounds cool, and symbolizes both forging and red things falling from the sky.

That took me like a minute to come up with, so you can see how easy it can be for you to design an army theme with a little brainstorming and analysis. Have fun!

And my Dark Eldar are, "Purple People Eaters"

You could always say "The Grey Wave" and claim that the genetic defect in the seed doesn't give them the bloodlust or give them rabies and fleas. instead, it made them colour blind.

Personally, I like using classical names. Fluff wise my armie's name is Vei Victus (I have a lot of Corsairs- Vei Victus breaks down to "Woe to the Conquered" which was big back from Assyria up to Rome because if you ain't dead, you're a slave)

The other name I have for units I'm trying out, or my Khainite side is "Cui Bono" or "Who Profits?" (also good if you're a comic book fan) because win or lose, you just fought a blood thirsty race who basically says "Screw Khorne, Blood for the MURDER god!"

Something with "Red" or "Crimson" and "Guard" or "Templars" will work just fine...

Red - Crimson - Scarlet - Blood
Knights - Guard

Red Knights - a bit drab
Crimson Knights - not bad
Scarlet Knights - not bad
Blood Knights - a warhammer fantasy unit cavalry unit
Red Guard - drab
Crimson Guard not bad
Scarlet Guard - a bit poofey

Those are just my opinions based on the words you gave us.
Clearly I find the word 'red' boring, and 'blood' is somewhat overused.

You lot are fast. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

I was originally thinking of some kind of blood angels background, but I followed the heraldry markings (tactical markings and squad numbers etc...)similar to ultramarines as they were the one with the most info i could find. I have the codex for space marines and blood angels codex. I wanted them to be a standard codex force really as i'm not to sure of some of the details of the other codexs.

Also since starting this hobby I have a real thing for making scenery, more so than my army.
Some of the stuff in the gallery is just amazing.

I thought of the red templars first but they already exist.

What about using some of the planets from the 40k universe, i've been scratching around for a home world this could be a basis for a name for my army?

Thanks again, I like the sound of crusaders, this would fit with the cross chapter symbol.

If anyone could come up with a home planet i could use that, I do like the Baal but that is for Blood Angels, i didn't want them to follow the blood angels codex though.

Ultramarines is a wordplay in itself, why can't you have some wordplay for the color red? Just for kicks, you can also name them Scarlet Sons of Johann (hope someone gets it).

As for fluff, can you just make it up?
Such as a new home planet and new heroes, battles they have fought in, and im guessing you can just tie it in with actual fluff from the real 40k world.

How about "Paladins of the crimson tide". "Bob" is quite good too.

The Holy Land that the crusaders controlled was called Outremer from the french 'outre mer' which means overseas. It would make a good name for your home planet.
Knight Orders tended to be called things like the Poor Knights of St John, though marines tend to be called angels so you get something like 'The Angels of Outremer'.

Do some reading on the crusades to get some names for your captains, units etc. Your army is red though I could see the elite units wearing white robes or completely white armour with red crosses on the front as well as the shoulders.

Its little bits of info like that, that can lead you into a complete new direction thanks again.

I've already got one tactical squad with robes on from the templars upgrade kit, i was going to get the dark angels kit for full robes, great idea about the elite though, would make them stand out more too.
