hey guys, this is the first dreadnought i've ever painted... please do let me know what you guys think, thanks =)

by the way, i apologise if the model seems 'dusty'... i think i was a little too enthusiastic with the matt spray finish... XD

It looks like you are quite a good painter, based on the pipework, flames, purity seals etc. It is just a shame that you have elected to go for such a dark main colour which doesn't really allow for shadows or highlights.

If you want to paint your marines mostly black, go for a dark grey and then wash or otherwise darken the shadowed areas until they are closer to black.

As I say, it is a shame that your obvious painting skills are not allowed to show through with the scheme you have chosen.

wow... thanks...
i am very inclined to agree with u, silver... that's what i've noticed too using black as my primary colour... not much chance to do shadings and all...

but yeah... i'm a sucker for black and i've always loved black as a colour... so yeah... i can't really help it... XD

thanks again for ur opinion though... i appreciate it... =)

As I say, you can get a very good looking black by using a (+/- very) dark grey - means you can actually add shadows to it as well as highlight which just adds so much depth to a model.

Pure black looks very flat and also, Im afraid to say, quite boring. After all, there are a lot of black primer armies out there

I have occasionally have issues with the varnish "fogging up" the figure... seems to be related to spraying the figure when the humidity is higher... though I also think it's related to the brand of varnish you use.

I agree with silver on both counts... (your obvious talent & the fact that it's not being shown off appropriately). Follow his advice and you'll be fine & I suspect very pleased with the results.

haha... that's kinda one of the reasons why i'm very keen on painting other races... XD
like orcs for example... i love the muscle tones that they have... offers plenty of opportunity for me 2 play around a bit with colours and shadings...

in fact i have a half painted orc nob and a few tyranids that i've painted lying around at home.... they're not exactly my models though...

anyway, i've had a look at ur models silver and i love how you converted some of them... i can never get good conversions going... mainly coz i really really REALLY suck with green stuffs.... =( in fact i'd love to get my hands on a well converted model 1 day and try painting that... jez to see how it'll turn out... hahaha...

Astounding job Good too know that the matte varnish didn't create a horror story as it normally does.

Thanks - I'm glad you like them

There are a few tutorials about on dakka for using green stuff which are pretty good. I will find a couple of them for you when I get home. Green stuff, like anything else, just takes a bit of practice. Also helps to have lots of bits to convert things from/with

Looks good, the flame work is very very nice.

And for some odd reason, I never thought of black and gold. Even though I like that combination.

If I can learn it you can! Katakana's pretty easy dude:

You should do those awesome flames on your marines legs and shoulder pads

Very nice flames. I have to agree though that the black falls flat.

For a black army, you need to bring out the imagination a little more I guess. The flames are a great start. Maybe some transfers on the large, plain area's such as the legs? Basically adding details or extra colours to make it more interesting.

Overall, you did a great job. As long as you have fun painting, thats all that matters.

If you put those same flame effects on the hull of the dreadnought you'd have one badass looking mini on your hands.

I think you did a good job, way better than I could ever do. I like the scheme, it is subtle. Nice work.
