Interesting, I had a quick google and was surprised how few people are selling bunkers. The only issue I see with these is the fact that the historical bunkers were mostly just big blocks of concrete, so there's only so much room to add extra detail without sacrificing historical accuracy. I had a little look at some of the D Day ones and I reckon we could do something there. Consider it stuck on the end of a long list

Evaelc wrote:Liking what you have done. All of the bases look awesome. However just curious how you did the sandstone effect on the gaurd bases as it looks so awesome.

Hah that was easy:

1) Spray base black
2)Paint the whole top P3 Formula 'Jack Bone
3) Wash the whole thing with Badab Black or Devlan Mud, can't remember which one I used
4) Pick out some of the detail with Skull White

So as promised earlier here are some pics of what we've been up to. We've still got some more to take and some painting to do, so will post more soon

We also made some big 120x94mm (Dreadknight size) bases for each range so we can add them as an option on our website when we get some nice pics of unpainted, painted, etc done. The icon can be facing either way to be suitable for whichever way the model faces. We're thinking of doing it so the bases will come with a random icon design or a choice from a select few, so pick random, A, B or C from a drop-down menu for example. That way you can pick one you like but have less choice, or take a random one from a larger range of designs. We figured having to add every design as an option and have a thumbnail of each would get a bit overwhelming.

the simplicity of the pieces wouldn't really lend themselves to angles as then your looking at having to saw/sand the edges of the angled pieces to fit however once figured out and a couple of jiggs made it wouldn't be hard to mas produce, remember they're cutting these with laser cutters which only do straight cuts and cutting the baracade to an angle you have to think of all the up and down slope pieces so an angled piece cut to an angle with an angled edge,

Although the easiest way to figure it out would be to take one and ste your disc sander to the right angle and jam it in there untill you hit the right point then mesure all the various angles you just created.

also are you talking internal or external angle there? or would people want both. Basicaly it's about two or three days of real headache to figure it all out properly and make the jiggs needed.

And finally, Generic APC hatches to match each design range. These still need a little tweaking, and please ignore the bone shape, that was the result of needing to make a shape very quickly without a design in mind If anyone wants a set of doors with their custom logo on they will be available as an option on the website in the near future. The engraving is deep enough to make painting pretty simple, we'll get some samples painted up to show it off. As with the big bases they may be available as a choice of random, A, B or C etc.

Yeah the angle issue is something we're aware of and are looking at workarounds for. The simplest way would be to ignore the gaps, as it's intended to be something that can be rearranged and dissassembled for storage and what have you, so I doubt it would bother people in a practical situation. Watch this space for developments...

Ironic that you think the Techron base looks like a chair as that was what the first design was inspired by

Any plans for walkways behind the barricades? The shape of the duckboards looks like it could lend itself well to interlocking walkways and platforms, sort of like what you would see in swamp/heavily flooded areas, where the ground does not lend itself to digging.

Hey! Ed here!

So my initial idea here is to increase the gap between the fixings, this should allow for the front Armour plate to be wedged in, and still be workable...see the quick mock up render for a visual.

Also I included a radar / field satellite for imperial forces which I hope to prototype tomorrow!

We'll be putting them up on the website once we have the corners made, followed by extra detail plates and accessories like bunkers. We're looking to do a whole modular range of buildings and stuff for populating battlefields in the future. We've got so much stuff we want to do but stupid day jobs get in the way! Not to mention armies on parade...

Hey guys!

Thanks for following us and keeping us motivated! As we haven't posted much in the last day or so, a quick update as to my day job activities!

Have been pretty busy preparing for final shows across a range of courses first in London and now here in Bournemouth. Recently I have been helping the Modelmaking course with some of their show prep, setup and breakdown which has been pretty demanding, but fortunately we're sorted now and riding it out now!

A little stand which is situated within the modelmaking's show, illustrating some of the CAD/CAM work that we undertake at the Uni. There are a range of samples from our CNC Mill, Laser Cutters and 3D printer. At the back of the image you can see my RapMan DIY 3D printer, which has taken allot of work to get up and running in preparation for the show - fortunately it made it on the night, and was a big crowd puller, especially with all the men in suits walking around that evening

A completed print, not that its obvious as to what it is...but it looks like a lemon squeezer! (not intentional!).

Now the printer is up and running I'm thinking of making something to add to Warmills product range, where I can 3D print a master or something like that....Recommendations welcome

Have a good weekend - I think I'll be spending most of mine sitting down doing not much

Ed

Seconded from me mate spent 2 weeks making an arm and am now very sleepy! Think I'll let the CNC do all the work this weekend! Fingers crossed the last valkyrie rotor master will finish soon.

I went to the game shop and gave the mk1 barricades to the guy so they may be used in the big space marines vs genestealers demo game at bovington next weekend when we're camping. I reckon we let the girls go and do girly stuff and we go and play being geeky at the game show

I have a case full of Dark Angels, and they need re basing with our stuff - so will be picking up the sketchbook again hopefully this week

Any requests in particular? Bike and flying bases will be cool with the ravenwing and whatnot - also the terminators are slightly different so plenty of scope. If there is any reference material that you could point us in that would be handy and make for more varied bases

Good to here the Barricades will make mass production , that makes me smile look forward to seeing your corner sections, really really want to get my hands on them , they look bang on 40k ig mass produced trench lines. Your 3d printer cad work is also , interesting, i can see that this technology and your aproach could really push the direction of moddeling into a new direction , what ever you do , the technical qaulity or your work is obvious, There is so much potential for this stuff, Bizzare geometric forms of tezentch spring to mind. I would love to play around with your machine and soem3d softeware. Btw what 3d programs can you use with the printer ? is it just Cad , lightwave , 3dmax , or does it accept sketchup files and other lower end 3d programs ?

Progress has been made on a concept for the corners. The aim is to have a totally customisable set that allows you to modify the setup every game however you want, and we're thiiiiiiiis close. Once we've got all the extra duckboard parts drawn up we'll post some pics and get some prototypes cut to test that the theory works as well in the flesh as the computer!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
as for the software, most are acceptable to use with a range of technologies out there. I've seen some pretty advanced stuff come out of google SketchUp, we use Rhino as it makes things that would work in real life, and is pretty easy to get going plus has great 2D and 3D tools.

For more organic shapes a mesh modeler is more suited, like Cinema 4D or 3Ds Max..Blender is a great free tool also! If you can crete something, we'll happily make a prototype for you!

Well it's taken all day but I think we have an inner corner! The way it's designed you can have anything between 22.5 degrees and 90 degrees from a single set, but sets can be combined to make a huge range of configurations. I've been playing with one barricade on and off and it's almost like lego!

Now to do the same for the outer angles :(

Outer corners are done! Huzzah! We're planning on cutting a few out tomorrow to test them ready for sale, if all goes well I reckon we could have them up on the site pretty quick. I've been playing around with little connectors to hold everything together in the correct alignment and to stop everything getting knocked out of place if you bump your gaming table. All we need now's a fancy brand name like WarClick or something Ed's drawn up a concept for heavy weapon towers that can also slot into or behind the wall sections, so we'll have to get those drawn up in the future.

I've been buying up Infinity models at the moment to persuade Ed to play it, as the chances of us managing to paint whole 40K armies is pretty non-existent right now, but getting a dozen sexy models painted up is a bit more realistic. We've also got a few ideas for Inifinity terrain, but mostly the models are just damn hot

We both need to do a bit of painting for armies on parade as well. Bring on the guardsmen! Hopefully the Valkyrie kit will be ready for it

Good question! Once we've made a few we can work out material costs and manufacture time and work out a price from there. As far as the detail plates go there'll be a generic plate that comes with the set with army specific ones available as an upgrade package. This way we can get the basic set up as soon as possible and add more options later, stuff like heavy weapon towers, tank pits, etc. We could also do a package that lets you have an elevated barricade on top of a wall, armoured walkways, etc
[Thumb - 2011-06-18 16.19.02.jpg]
Generic detail plate will be something along these lines, non specific armour.

I would have to agree with you on this mwnciboo, and what you can get is featureless or terrible with everything from fitting issues to poor design.
The only caution would be that with terrain"one mans out house is another mans castle" it's hard to please everyone as taste factors in.

Why yes since you asked as for design the classic icon used in Rouge Trader till third ed. wing and sword icon comes to mind. Other then that I trust your artistic talents .
But as for bases yes also doors look great too.
