Starship troopers for the win!

Also, I like the idea of painting the cut sections in the mirror backing.

Starship Troopers is one of the finest films of all time IMHO. What's not to like about it? I've been toying with the idea of machining a new torso based on the MI for my armies on parade guard, but we just secured a major order so who knows when I'll get the time :-)

Cheers mate, should be committed more like I haven't played a video game in months, ever since we started this little enterprise. I bought new sofas and have barely sat in them, while my computer chair is getting more and more screwed by the day. My girlfriend has forgotten what I look like. We have an accountant. Ed works until he's sick. It's easier for him and his girlfriend to communicate via Steam Etc, etc...

We love it though

Hey all

Busy weekend all round, we've been cutting bits to fill in the gaps in our ranges so we can offer big flying stands (120x94mm, Valkyrie / Dreadknight sized) as well as the small round bases. Ed's apparently taken loads of pics, as well as drawing up a new Ancient Techron display base, so pics of these will be up soon. Once these are finished we can move on to the next stuff. At the moment the ranges are on the site as random assortment packs but we're considering having less designs for each range but letting people buy a pack of 1 design to get consistency in a squad. It means going back over all the designs and picking just a few though

I drew up some plans for a modular barricade on Friday so will develop that a bit more as well, it needs corner pieces and heavy weapon bunker sections as well. I'm going to use it for my armies on parade board but it will eventually find its way on to our shop once it's ready The idea is that it can be constructed in stages, so to establish a quick defense just the big sloped plate is put up, then once a stable line is set up the forward-sloping plate is attached and the gap can be filled with rubble, sandbags, spikes, barbed wire etc. Inspiration came from the M113s in Vietnam where the crew would fill the space behind the amphibious plate with anything they could to get a bit of extra protection.

Turned out the bit of chemiwood I had to cut the next master for the valkyrie kit was too small, but now we've got some big enough that's ongoing, it would be nice to think everything would be done by the end of July but there's lots of other stuff to do as well, pah.

Cheers guys

Harry

Fething love the barricades. I can just see "Point this way towards enemy" painted across the front with caution stripes on the edges. How much you planning on selling these for, and do you plan on doing more terrain like this? I see fantastic possibilities.

I'm really confused about what that extra bit is which turns the front ramp into a "V" is for

The guys would fill the V with rubble, sandbags, dirt, spikes, barbed wire, claymores, grenades etc as extra armour and protection against guys trying to scale the barricade. I'm going to tweak the design a bit to make it more obvious. Ed's got a tank book with a pic of an M113 in vietnam where the crew have loweredd the amphibious plate at the front and filled the V with stuff for extra armour, but a pic seems really hard to find on google

I'm assuming they are sized so that a models can see over them to shoot at an enemy? They look really great. I think I prefer them without the V at the end. Not that it doesn't look good, I just think it looks a little too bulky that way for game purposes. Really excited to see you make more terrain pieces like this!

Check out my Project (B)log! I would love any suggestion or comments you may have.

yeah I did tweak the design on saturday slightly so that it could be used without the V, figured it might not be to everyone's taste

It's not that it doesn't make sense. That V compared to just the slope would make all the difference is stopping a tank from rolling right over the barricade and onto the troopers and it holds scary Close combat troops that much farther away. The two disadvantages with the V as well though. Smaller or crouching troops, could take cover behind/under the far end of the V, which would be counter productive for the defenders. It would also just be that much harder to set your attacking miniatures in the V to indicate that they are climbing over the difficult terrain, since it's all sloped. But that wouldn't be super hard to just proxy with something, or work around. Either way it's a great looking barricade!

A huge advantage I see with this terrain (and any other stuff you may or may not decide to make) would be that, to me, they look like you could assemble and disassemble them whenever you wanted. Which would be great for those of us that want to have nice terrain, but don't have the space to store it when it's not in use... just a thought. Great work!

Check out my Project (B)log! I would love any suggestion or comments you may have.

Flying bases would look great with a mirrored surface... maybe all of my "Dark Eldric" skimmers are due for some pimping.. Maybe with the centerpeice being clear resin, but have an outer ring that is a colored resin? As it seems the sharpie technique would rub off with your fingers...

Sharpies (as in the actual Sharpie brand pens, rather than marker pens in general) actually hold to surfaces quite well. If you have any doubt, you could always varnish the coloured surface to seal it in.

We have plans for flying bases that should look super sexy, we just need some models for reference! A mirrored base with all sorts of engravings painted from behind would look pretty damn hot methinks. Fallen Eldric will probably be the next range we work on once we've worked out exactly what will be in each range and how we're going to sell them (random assortment, specific designs, etc)

Had a bit of a play with the barricades testing out some ideas to prettify them a little. As to when they'll be on sale, the answer is when we think they're good enough! The main challenge is balancing how much detail to put in against how long they take to manufacture against how much people would actually pay for them. Then there's the corner sections to make as well... We're toying with the idea of selling a blank barricade then an embellishment pack as an upgrade to let people match their barricades to their armies, so there's a bit of development to go yet. I just picked up a few Infinity models for me and Ed to have a play with, so a range of snap together buildings will be in the pipeline at some point

Ed's been tied up with work for a while, but I've been doing a bit of painting while waiting for the Valkyrie parts to finish cutting. I've been trying to choose a scheme for my armies on parade board, so I've been painting up a few guardsmen and bases. I think I'm going to go with a sandstone-y colour for the base, sort of like a temple floor I guess, with each squad on a different style of base (fist squad, eagle squad, etc.). Rough phone pics below, we'll get some nice pics up soon.

Cheers all

on the mirrored bases fron an old Modelmaker trick I used for water on architectural models was to take your mirrored perspex and paint the back with a really light coat of paint so as to protect the mirror from scratching then a heavy coat then some parcel tape to give it real protection. aslong as you trim the tape to the base it should be safe as houses and pretty as a picture, Also for water a splatter coat of acrilic varnish or clear coat made a great dimpled effect but thats a bit off topic.

And before i forget again.

I LOVE THE NEW BARACADES.....

Hi all

We've been very busy taking pictures of stuff ready to update the website, so there's going to be a big picture dump tonight when I get home from work (day jobs ), in the meantime here's a couple to whet appetites

@ mullet_steve thanks for the compliment! I would think just painting the engraved bits then giving it a coat of black or white primer would be strong enough for general gaming use, but thanks for the advice, those sound like some seriously strong water bits.

Liking what you have done. All of the bases look awesome. However just curious how you did the sandstone effect on the gaurd bases as it looks so awesome.

DEAR SHOE,

THAT'S RIGHT YOU ARE A SHOE. THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT NOT BEING A SHOE BECAUSE IN MY MIND YOU ARE ONE AND THAT IS MOST UNFORTUNATE.
AS LONG AS I HAVE YOU CONCEPTUALIZED AS A SHOE IN MY IMAGINATION YOU SHALL REMAIN AS SUCH.
THIS MAKES ME WONDER WHETHER ALL PEOPLES AND OBJECTS CAN BE CONCEPTUALIZED AS SHOES AND THUS BECOME SUCH, GRANTING ME ABSOLUTE POWER OVER THEM. DO YOU HAVE A CLEVER ARGUMENT? NO YOU DON'T, YOU"RE A SHOE. SHOES CAN'T HAVE CLEVER ARGUMENTS.
I FEEL LIKE THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD HAS BEEN LIFTED OFF MY SHOULDERS NOW THAT EVERYTHING IS UNDER MY CONTROL, NOW THAT YOU ARE ALL SHOES. I NO LONGER HAVE TO ANSWER TO MY REGRETS AND PAST MISTAKES BECAUSE THEY ARE SIMPLY SHOES.

I had some thoughts on what I would do with a CNC and lasercutter and I realised something. There is a definite lack of quality Bunkers and emplacements both in the 28mm scale but also in the 15mm Flames of War Scale.

I think you might with some opaque material, make some quite intricate bunkers, Obviously 28mm would need tobe made in a 5 sided box style with the buyer providing a Base. Furthermore with the 15mm range you could do the base in one pass and then a "Lid" which the buyer would assemble. D-Day style pill-boxes and bunkers would be just as relevant in 40K (although with a few eagles etc dotted about).

Examples such as Sandbag Sangars or emplacements, Mortar pits all based around the size of Flames of War Base. These examples tend to be resin cast, not sure if it is more expensive for you to do it, but it maybe an idea. (Plus FoW is played by older players in the main so more disposable income....mercenary but that is what capitalism is about, despite some of the lefty high faluting ideas on these forums).

http://www.modeldads.co.uk/Life-at-the-Front/wordpress/?p=1524

I think there is a gap in the market.
