Okay so was left last night feeling pretty crappy after being told that my space marine army was illegal, and the person i was suppose to be playing walked out of the club... And all because I have painted them as my own chapter but used darks angels iconography! I was told that if I wanted to make it legal I'd have to rebuild the army using the dark angles codex or change my iconography! Now this was my firt time playing in a long time, but surely things haven't changed that much?

Keep painting... keep playing... keep having fun...

Umm.. no way.

DA Iconography can represent AnY chapter you made up.. as long as you got wings and swords somewhere in there..

Winged Avengers..
Swords of the Angels

etc..

If you are running them as "Counts as Space Wolves" I can see people giving you the hairy eyeball, but it ain't ILLEGAL..

Anybody who'd get annoyed and storm out because of something like that wouldn't be worth playing with. You didnt do anything wrong in the sightest, you're free to paint your mini's however you want. His loss.

GW fully supports "count's as". Don't bother lining up a game with a poor sport like that again. If he's acts like that about something perfectly legal and supported, he'll be a whiner about lots of other stuff as well.

And don't forget to spread the word so others know to stay away as well.

Don't feel bad, he probably saved you from having to sit through a terrible game if he's got that kind of attitude. Playing a "counts as" chapter with different iconography or paint schemes might get some raised eyebrows or dirty looks if you have an army clearly modeled after one chapter, but are simply swapping out another chapter's rules...but it's certainly not illegal as others have said. A clearly home brew chapter that simply has icons or elements from a chapter that you are not using the rules for shouldn't even be a blip on the radar.

Well, if you had painted them completely like Dark Angels and then played by another 'dex, that might be something I'd dislike, but just using the odd winged sword here and there with a completely different paint scheme? Come on...

"We train young men to drop fire on people, but their commanders won't allow them to write "feth" on their airplanes because it's obscene!" (Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now)

And you know what's funny? "feth" is actually censored on a forum about a dystopia where the nice guys are the ones who kill only millions of innocents, not billions.

Like the others in this thread, I am going to assume you were using at least one of the marine codices, and not some wierd counts-as (e.g. orks/tyranids).

If this is true, then the other guy is a d-bag. Just because you use DA iconography in a different scheme does not invalidate your list.

It's like saying that an ork player with lots of slugga boyz and very few vehicles, who has painted the army as evil sunz, has an invalid list because evil suns have lots of vehicles and so he isn't allowed to play anymore until he paints them as goffs (its a rough analogy, but you get the idea).

The person in question has clearly lost what I think is the spirit of the hobby, and that is to have fun!

Absolutly nothing wrong with playing them as Standard Marines assuming thats what you're doing.

Don't let this spoil your return to the game. Was it just this one person saying this?

LOOOLLL omg that is sooooooooooooo stupid!!!!!!!!!.
I would have been like "illegal? show me where it says that. till then you're a liar making up rules and I refuse to play with a liar"
and when he walked out I would have been dancing right behind him just to piss him off yelling "WOO MY ENEMY WAS SCARED BECAUSE HE NEVER READ A RULEBOOK OR A CODEX AND RAN AWAY! VICTORY!!"

Now you will pay for your freedom in the currency of honest toil and human blood.

I played against a guy like that at a tourney nearly ten years ago. I was using Iron Warriors, but painted them uk as my own legion.
He got Pissy because "my army was not the right colour and I had no right to use them as Iron Warriors".
The judge said I was allowed to use them, the other player argued, judge yellow carded him, player argued more and then he got red carded and disqualified.
He then got very abusive at me and got ejected from the building and barred from GW tourneys.
I came 4th because of that one incident. He was in line to go top three if he kept his mouth shut. I won best general and best painted army too. Win win.

The game doesn't need idiots like that, but it sure has a lot of them.

Don't feel crappy! It was the other guy's weird issues, not a problem with your army.

Some players do take offense at a SM army that is clearly built for one codex, but being used as the current "hot" codex. For example, if you have a BT army and are claiming it is being played as SW or BA.

But, if it's a complete do-it-yourself chapter, you've got quite a bit of leeway on what's considered "acceptable". My own personal view on it is that you can count it as any marine army you want, but you can't change more often than once every few years.

And remember, a good paint job, some well thought out fluffy background, and a friendly attitude does a great job of turning "Oh, look, another SM counts-as" into "Cool army! Let's play!"

Kill him. Kill with fire! Or plasma, since you're using Dark Angels icons. They love them there Plasma.

I use Dark Angels, although mine are painted as a succesor chapter, the Guardians of the Convenant. I've played with them using both the Dark Angels and regular Marine dex, and never heard a whisper.

I can understand people getting pissed about someone having a properly modelled/painted Dark Angels army, but they play using the Blood Angels Codex. IMO, THAT should be illegal... but if you have your own chapter, with your own color scheme, and iconography (even if you pilfered another chapters...), then the guy has no right to complain. The chapter is of your own creation and can be whatever the hell you want.

Why?

The DA codex is designed to represent forces drawn from battle companies with special characters allowing representation of a force drawn mainly from the 1st or 2nd companies but it does not allow a force drawn mainly from the 8th, 9th or 10th.
The BA codex allows for representing a force drawn mainly from the 8th company and the SM codex allows for a force drawn mainly from the 10th.

The colour and/or shoulder pad symbols have zero impact on the game. A legal army is a legal army regardless of how it's painted.

No, they haven't. That dude is just a jerk. You can model and paint whatever you want, however you want. There's nothing in the rules that says otherwise.

I do similar things. I don't know why that guy was such a jerk. It's not like you were making them count as blood angels or something (which you can still do, but it's kind of silly).

Next time tell him that yours is a successor chapter of the DA. Bad luck for him as then he can't whine cause it's perfectly legal that way.

This is so absurd it went from annoying through comical past sad and straight to a sort of nirvana-like place of perfect peace where things like this can't actually happen or else the TFG simply disappears in a puff of illogic.

Painting ultramarines and then using them as dark angels one week and blood angels the next may be in poor taste, but what you've done isn't even close to this. The worst any sane person could say about your army is that it's legal, and fluffy.

A friend of mine had the same argument with his resident TFG. He was building an all dread and terminator strike force to be modelled as a just-post-heresy Imperial Fist force led by Sigmundison (who was still captain of the IF 1st company).

He wanted to use the DA codex (pre-facelift) and was told that he HAD to use the SM codex, blah, blah.

Particularly funny coming from a guy who's army is unpainted (so, by the same logic, it doesn't qualify to use any codex).
