Accepting that many Dakka posters' first language isn't english (in which case by all means pick an english language film), what's your favourite foreign language film or a good one you've seen recently?

To be honest, my favourite film of all time (foreign language or otherwise) is Seven Samurai, but for this thread I'm going to nominate one I watched last night. It's been sitting in my DVD collection for about two years waiting for a time when Mrs Flashman (who refuses to watch subtitled films) was out for the evening and I was in the mood to sit down and listen to two hours of people speaking French. Anyway, I'm pleased I did, because it was excellent. Bit difficult to describe because it's really just two hours of a teacher struggling to teach a class of maladjusted youths over the course of a year, but I found it completely absorbing. It isn't just a French "Dangerous Minds" either, as the focus of the film is on his teaching methods and relatively laid back approach to discipline. Well worth catching if you get the opportunity.

I don't know, it's hard to choose out of these three:

The Warlords
House of Flying Daggers
Pan's Labyrinth

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Agree on 7 Samurai, however... Some other very strong contenders are...

The remake of 'True Grit' - I couldn't understand a fething word Jeff Bridges was saying!

Serious: Not sure... I enjoyed 'City of God', as I recall.

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

Okay, so the male version of "Cougar" is now officially "Albatross".

Indeed, especially the underwater point of view shot at the end. Genius and exactly how supernatural should be shown.

I saw the American Version awhile back "Let Me In". It was one of the first redos I have seen that was as good as the original foreign language version.

Here is another good one:

If you need subtitles to understand the mother tongue, then by all means

Joking aside, I had a lot of difficulty making myself understood in New York and Salt Lake City during my 2006 States Odyssey. At times, I felt like it would be quicker to write it down.

To be fair it would be quicker for some New Yorkers to write it down when trying to communicate with the rest of us.

Haha most arty/intellectual one so far. I win!

I enjoyed the documentary one about the french school teacher had a name like 'etrés et avoir' or something, i think the name was a pun about the weird french tense system.

'Goodbye Lenin!' was good as well.

My favourite film, subtitles or not, is Spirited Away.

Other great foriegn films are (as mentioned above) Zatoichi and Seven Samurai.

Oldboy has been mentioned, which is a simply incredible film.

Strange that no-one has mentioned Infernal Affairs. It is the original Chinese language version of The Departed, which is essentially exactly the same film.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

I have no idea how we got more than 3 posts in without these being mentioned.

And, can we safely just add Kurosawa's entire collection to the list?

It would have been nice if they would have made a sequel to Leon, with Natalie Portman's character (Mathilda) grown up and is a trained assassin.
