I am fairly sure that this is in the wrong part of the forum, but i couldn't find anywhere that covers BOTH fantasy and 40k fluff, but anyway...

Are 40k and fantasy in the same universe? There isn't a lot more to say, other than that this has been on my mind ever since I decided to begin the hobby a while back, and all I can conclude is that WHFB isn't in our universe.

The short answer is No, they aren't in the same universe.

Short answer: No

Long answer: It once was possibly(evidenced by chainswords and bolt pistols showing up as Chaos Gifts and Artifacts in WHFB AND WHFRP), but they've removed the connections since then.

Never been a real definitive answer, and doesn't really matter one way or another.

GW has mentioned that 'the olde world is just one place in the very large 40k universe'.

However, when, where, and whether there is any interactaion between them, has never been really defined.

There is a story in Liber Chaotica that suggests the two universes exist side-by-side, but nothing conclusive.

A heretic from the Empire had a "lucid dream" so to speak where he saw "giants with intricate armour and brandishing odd weapons that could level any town or civilization." You're left to draw your own conclusion, but it's pretty obvious what he saw.

There was a WFRP adventure printed in WD which had an Ambull from 40k appear in the Warhammer world:

It was hinted at years ago but now they are distinctly seperated, probably for 'brand' purposes rather than anything interesting fluff-wise. Certainly it was a laugh having your fantasy general getting a plasma gum to fry empire troops but those days are long gone.

Actually, I'd say it's because as soon as the FB world started interacting with the 40K universe, it'd be wiped out. All it'd take is one Hive Fleet tendril, and that'd be the end.

It made more sense before they made chaos demons and used the same special characters in each

The consensus I get is that they aren't int he same setting, except when they are.

No.

There's two design teams and they're both bad at it.

Real answer: It's all the same universe. Olde World is/was shielded from the 40K side. Why? because everything post Thorpe is bad and can be ignored as bad.

Nope. The 'real' answer is that they were originally the same universe. 40K was originally just WHFB in space... they took the setting, sci-fied it, and called it Warhammer 40000. They explained the similarities by stating that the Old World is a planet cut off from the rest of the universe by Warp Storms.

As time went on, the've slowly moved to separate the two, and various studio members have stated over the years that they do not consider them to be the same setting any more. They still share some elements, but that's all.

Yeah but how does one explain the demon codex? Two kairos seems pretty absurd

Maybe its a teleporter accident? Perhaps we can reverse the polarity to fix things

Easy to explain. You need to read more comic books. One of them is from Earth Two.

If we can have two flashes, two green lanterns, and two atoms, I don't have a problem with their being two Kairos. Maybe once a year they can do team ups like the old JSA/JLA team ups.

Omadon's Realm

The warp is in neither universe and it is in both. It is clear in both versions that the warp is a different dimension and connects to many realities.

There was an allusion to the warhammer world being in the 40k universe and shut off from the rest of it by warpstorms and hints that sigmar was a lost primarch, all around the time of the Realm of Chaos books.

Unlike the star child mythos, illuminati and the sensei, that particular idea of fantasy and 40k being in the same universe was very clearly retconned and smirched. That came about when the design team/studio decided that a clear move away from 'WHFB in space' was needed for 40k and things like the space slann, zoats and squats were swept under the rug.

Maybe they're just universal archetypes that just pop up in all universes when the conditions are right.

I've always viewed it that there both the same universe just thatfantasy is 40k's past and 40k is fantasy's future and that elves evolved into eldar and dwarfs evolved into the tech priests of mars but I know very little about the 40k universe.

40k's past is pretty explicitly 'our' world, so this doesn't work without a lot of work.

insaniak is right, They used to be connected, but for a long time now GW have put a firm divide between the two systems. The only things they share now are the Chaos Daemons models.
