The new landing gear looks good. It matches the height of the skis much better. Did you remove some form the middle of the body as well? The kopta looks a little shorter from nose to tail.
Good work! I'm looking forward to the pilots.

Im gonna have to agree with everyone else and say that it definitely looks way better. I especially like the rockets.

And you do realise that now you've said it, you have to make a grot valk!

Ps. Any more fluff on the way?

Arakasi: I knew you'd come to your senses . As for the size: it's pretty big, but if you really want to do an apache style two-seater, smaller won't really be an option. Look at it this way: you want them to draw attention, so big and scary = good .

Rose_Mountainz: this is the update for you! Grot pilots!

The Good Green: Uhm didn't change the landing gear mate, was only considering it, and I didn't remove a bit either - maybe it's the angle of the pics? I added lots of gs with the seats and in all the gaps though, which has changed the shape a bit by filling things out, which makes it looks less slender. Pilots below!

Vitruvian XVII: Glad you like the improved version . The Valk won't be for anywhere near, with all the GW price rises I feel I'd rather spend money on stuff I need for the revolution. Maybe when the core is finished, but don't hold you breath . As for fluff: I've got nothing more written, so you'll need to be patient a while longer.

Commissar Agro: It's a grotspray now . Glad you like it!

Hits_the_spot: thank you!

Now, for what's apparently an eagerly awaited update: the pilots! I've built them so they can sit in their chairs, and that's all I'll be doing today. Tomorrow may see some more gs work (the front guy needs a scarf I think), but I don't want to mess up the current gs job. Here's the pics, let me know what you think!

Front pilot:

Rear pilot (got the model with the black undercoat, it's hell to photograph):

The pilots in their seats:

I still need to clean both up a bit, but that's for tomorrow; it's been longs days at work and this week promises to be very busy, so it'll be small updates and some half-finished stuff I'll finish to provide the good people of dakka with piccies

Wow this here is a really cool army!

The real threat to the imperium is not:

it is :
92% of teens have moved on to rap. If you are one of the 8% who still listen to real music, copy and paste this into your sig.
95% of teens would go into a panic attack if the jonas brothers were about to jump off the empire state building copy and paste this if you are the 5% who would pull up a lawn chair grab some popcorn and yell JUMP BITCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GENERATION 6: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

Rose_Mountainz; Thanks man! A grot army is all about charcter, IMO

Arakasi: I changed the thread title back just for you! Besides, look at the scale shot and tell me you don't want such a huge flying monstrosity chasing 'regular' deffkoptas

Commissar Agro: Glad you like'em! The piltos does look abt akward on his ow, but he looks better on the kopta. Once painted things will hopefully be a bit clearer.

ubbeknubbe: Thanks!

So, I finished off the kopta with some minor gs work, an additional exhaust and a pair of windshields. The pilots were left as-is since there isn't all that much room to add stuff. I'll be adding translucent plastic once it's finished as well. Scale shots are there just for fun

I'll be giving him a custom base so he's a bit higher up.

"Fly me closer, I want to hit him with my pipe!"

The last pic shows off the front pilot in his natural state - excited, chasing something, and about to turn said something into scrap metal!
Now, onto painting again. I've got a kommissar and a bunch of grots almost finished, together with a megagrot, so about time I put brush to mini I guess.

I dunno about the windshields. I kinda like the idea for the rear pilot, but the front pilot has that helmet (with visor) on. So I'm not convinced he would need or want one... also it looks like it's in the way.

That being said, I LOVE the pilots! Both look perfect for their positions on the kopta. Extra exhausts are always a plus!

You've really done wonders here. This may be the beginning of the dual kopta revival.

Wow the Squeaky Wagh has grown quite a bit since I last checked it and it just keeps getting better. After those burnas the Megagrots I'm nearly done with seem simple. I'm not sure about the dual kopta but it's perfect stylistically for an ork contraption.

MajorTom11: Thanks! And it's uniquely 'grotty'!

The Good Green: To me, the front windshield looks like it prevents the front pilot falling off - he looks pretty enthusiastic . I added one on the front and rear because I like symmetry.

You've really done wonders here. This may be the beginning of the dual kopta revival.

Heffling has been converted to the dual rotor church, and now I'm working on Arakasi when it comes to a two-seater - where's your dual kopta btw?

ChaoticMind: your megagrots are looking good! I managed to miss your thread when you posted them up first time, but I like what you did with them! What bothers you about the dual kopta? I kinda like the 'huge flying monstrosity' thing going on

Anwyay, here's some more piccies, this time of a kommissar and his cronies. The grots are just that, with a few that are even unconverted (the ones I assembled first), but I still like the little buggers.

Pics:

The blending on the squig is more subtle, but messing around with the pics messed up the effect.

Some grots:

And a group shot:

Next up: a megagrot needs finishing, I'm building an additional burna, and I want to make lootas as well, still wondering whether I should use the burnagrots as a base or go for something totally different. Suggestions welcome!

Maybe some kind of miniature tank, with the loota gun on it, would work I think. What would also be interesting is some eavy armored grots. I imagined somthing like a front line of grots holding the black orc shields and the rest just behind them. Just another idea for you Nice work so far love all of it, keep it up!!

Like many religions, I found this one to be full of lies and heartbreak! I may have dabbled in your heresy, but I have discovered that working with Green Stuff is not for me. Unfortunately, like many souls, I have fallen for the false hope of the Evangilist, CommissarKhaine.

In all seriousness, I found GS to be very difficult to work with. I'm sure part of this was because I had previously primed my models before attempting to convert, so it didn't want to stick to the primered areas at all. This meant each time I wanted to refine one area, another would become seperated from the model. I will give it one more chance after my next pay check in a couple of week (when I can afford to buy another set of Kopta's on eBay) and see if a thorough sanding and cleaning will help the GS stick better.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Also, can we get a shot of the full army you have now?

A low rumbling noise in the distance slowly lifted Skarag from the state of Orky "koncentration" he had been enjoying doing up Da Inna Circul's trukk. Deffkopta? Two deffkoptas? Skarag struggled to picture the machine in his mind. From the sounds alone he could distinguish two rotors, but they were too synchronised to suggest two deffkoptas, two unsynchronised for Space Marines, and not powerful enough for a warkopta. The power to weight ratio seemed... off... too. Whatever it was had peaked his curiosity - either an ingenious contraption - or an abomination. Skarag's curiosity was soon satisfied as the vehicle appeared over the horizon. Grabbing binokulars he inspected the machine. Grotz. A new idea was forming in his mind. He motioned to some of his nearby boyz, who had now also noticed the flying hazard in the distance. "Get dat fly'in kontraption - I need da parts!"

Ha! Unfortunately, my second deffkopta is at least two weeks away from being started, so the "kompetition" is on hold until then. It will literally be the last model I put together of my 1000pts. I don't want such a huge flying monstrosity - there I said it - well, at least not yet. At this rate I'll probably make a start on three deffkoptas - Avatar style (there's your two rotors, but not as large), Grot Apache (the two seater) and Star Wars Landspeeder style - and finish whichever one looks like it will come together fastest - I'm running out of time!

Keep up all of the excellent work! I've already noted Loota ideas, so thats it from me for now!

As i said previously stylistically the dual kopta is perfect the problem is in my head.
My brain keeps on telling me it will crash faster than a modern fighter aircraft without power. Another part of my brain says there's probably more lift created by those rotors than the wings of a modern fighter. Basically my sanity said good bye 4-5 years ago.

If you were to do another dual kopta I think lightening up the rear, making the side view closer to real helicopters, would help the look in my mind.
Or if you want to keep the body the same more of a Chinook for side profile and rotor placement.
That's just my own opinion so feel free to ignore me.

The front pilot definitely needs the scarf or a cape.

Your take on the quadrupedal loota would be interesting.
BTW thanks for the compliments!

Wow lots of replies with some cool ideas . Let's get going!

Ajcosford: Thanks man! I've tried a mini tank using spare russ tracks, but it's very wide and is almost twice as wide as a regular loota. The shield idea is interesting, would fit with the weapons team ideas.

Arakasi: some great ideas there, thank you! One thing I've considered is copying the old style IG HW teams; with the guns on wheeled carriages; it would still be hell to fit on 25 mm base though. The sentry gun with gun controller just sparked an idea in my mind: what if the grots would've gotten hold of some weapons servitors and then upgraded them? You could have a grot with an r/c controller and a gun servitor - these should just fit on the base

Heffling: Perseverance my son, you are being tested! Only those who keep the faith shall be rewarded! There is no false hope either my son, only false expectations!

The trick with gs is to apply it to the model, make a very basic shape, and then let it cure for 5-10 mins. It'll usually stay attached to the mini then, and will be a lot easier (i.e. less sticky) to work with. Another important thing: only work on one area at a time, or you'll mess up previous work - trust me on this one! whatwhat here on dakka has made a splendid gs tutorial, it's worth checking out! I've added some group shots below, painfully illustrating how much I have to paint. Conversion-wise, the army is moving along at a fair pace, but painting is always a bit slower with me.

Eagle Ark: those are brilliant! where did you get the pics from? I might steal these if I can figure out a way to make these and still keep them paintable!

Arakasi (pt. 2):
Ack-Ack and Cripnick had been messing around with Gitskag's new kopta, and they loved it! Gritty's deffsaw-kopta had been the terror of the Squeaky Waaaghh!!! for a while, but now... There was new boss in town - well, in the air - the megagrots had been quite explicit about a few things. As they were flying around, they saw a dust cloud approaching: fast vehicles, white and dark green, and with a deffkopta - orks! Ack-Ack, who was at the controls, figured gettin' the rest of the lads might be best idea, to Cripnick's great frustration; he wanted to mess around. " Come on man, we've got rokkits and buzzsaws - nothin' we can't kill". Look at da size of da cloud! there's plenty of'em, and they've got koptas too. Besides, you love Gritty doing fun stuff to flyas!. After a moment, Cripnick's face lightened up. " We'll need popped squigs!". Before they turbo-boosted off into the distance, they fired of a salvo of rokkits, just to make sure the orks wouldn't turn back. This was business!

Now we'll really have to do battle someday . On a more serious note: it's only two weeks man, long on the internetz, not so long irl; we'll see it when you get there!

ChaoticMind: that's grottiness for you, it works because they believe it works . One day I'm going to do something with a looted valkyrie, and that one will look more Chinook. This one was really an impulse creation (the start, anyway), due to me having two koptas lying around and the need for only one deffsawkopta - as you can see I tossed my sanity out of the window along time ago! . There's no room on the mini for a scarf, sadly, and a cape would be too superman,; I'd have to paint him blue and red then . Besides, the space behinghim will be filled up with a snotling, so there's no room for a cape. Quadrupedal loota is definitely interesting!

BTW thanks for the compliments!

You took an idea, made it your own so it fit into your army, and spent quite some attention on details - you deserve it ands I think it's a shame you didn't get many replies. As a remedy: here's ChatoicMind's blog

So, some group shots (they link to the gallery, so you can zoom in):

painted stuff:

Everything I've got assembled:

And for those wondering, here's where I stand:

HQ:

1 Big Mek with KFF, power klaw: 1 painted
1 Warboss in mega-armour: 0 painted

ELITES:
5 burnagrots out of 10-15; 0 painted
7 megagrots out of 9; 4 painted
0 Lootas out of 10-14: 0 painted

TROOPS
4 kommisars out of 12: 3 painted
56 grots out of 120: 24 painted

FAST ATTACK
5 defkoptas out of 2 : 1 painted
3 buggies/wartrakks out of 3: 1 painted

HEAVY SUPPORT
1 battlewagon out of 2: 1 painted
3 killa kans out of 6: 1 painted
1 deffdread out of 1: 0 painted

So, quite some work cut out for me! Now, onto the lootas: I've got the following ideas remaining:
- A weapons team based on the old IG HW teams, i.e. big guns on wheeled carriages
- A servitor with a grot controlling it by remote
- a grot tank
- EagleArk's brilliant find, the flintstone-loota

I'm gonna make an attempt at each, see which ones I like best, and then post them for scrutiny - might be a while though!

Arakasi: I built three without buzzsaws before I got the codex. I might use them in apoc or something, but otherwie I won't have points to spare. I mainly want access to a lot of stuff, and be able to build a decent army. Here's a 1750 point list I threw together that I might use at a tourney in August, if I can get enough models finished:

Grot rev 1750

HQ
Warboss: mega armour, cybork body, bosspole: 115

Big Mek: KFF, power klaw: 110

ELITES

10 burnaboyz: 150

5 lootas: 75

TROOPS

29 gretchin, 2 runtherd: 107

19 gretchin, 1 runtherd: 67

19 gretchin 1 runtherd: 67

5 Meganobz, 2x rokkit 1x skorcha: 215
Battlewagon, deffrolla, 2x big shoota, boarding plank: 125

FAST ATTACK:

Deffkopta, twin linked rokkits, buzzsaw: 70

Deffkopta, big shoota, buzzsaw: 60

3 buggies (2x track), twin-linked rokkits: 115

HEAVY SUPPORT:

3kans, grotzookas: 135

3 kans, grotzookas: 135

Battlewagon, deffrolla, 2x big shoota, boarding plank: 125

I feel it's lacking a bit in grots though, so it'll need playtesting!

EagleArk: found them this time around, thanks! I like what he did, glueing troll heads to ork bodies was a stroke of genius.

Rose_Mountainz: no stopping them now! The first concept model is a remote-controlled btw. Enjoy!

So as said before, I'll be building some concept models to decide which one I'll use. The grot tank is out due to being too big, but the other options are still in. Here's the first concept model, a remote controlled looted servitor:

And with the grot:

And a better view of the remote:

Not the best pics, but the lighting sucked. So, what do you guys think? I believe I can still improve the design adding more bionics and such, but I feel that maybe he lacks some grottiness. I'll see how the HW team turns out and sleep over it a bit before making a final decision. C&C welcome!
