Yeah, no idea how to intelligently convey what I mean in the header, so allow me to explain a bit.

Ever had a unit that no matter how many times you use it, it just refuses to roll and act normally? Like it actually doesn't realize what unit it's supposed to be, and thinks it's something else entirely. Maybe it's something like your Fire warriors always win close combat, or that one squad of shoota boys doesn't realize it's BS 2 and hits every shot it fires, or that Vindicaire assassin who can't hit the broad side of a barn. You know, that one unit that refuses to roll average.

Because I am definitely experiencing this with conscripts. For those of you unfamiliar with them, take your average guardsman. Take away his frag grenade, make him LD 5, and make him shoot like an ork and hit like a grot. His only redeeming factor is that he scores and that he can come back every time he's removed from the table as a fresh unit. They are for all intents and purposes, meatshields whose only job is to absorb fire and be annoying. My conscripts apparently didn't get the memo, and I'm not sure what they think they are, but it's sure as hell not anything in the IG codex. Over the course of 3 games at a 2k tourney today...

Spoilered for people who don't feel like reading
Spoiler:

1. They passed 10 out of 12 LD checks. 3 were in close combat, and 2 were made on double one's, when they were at LD 2. The few times they did manage to run, they refused to leave the board, RALLIED, and opened fire on whoever had shot them. (ironically enough, this won me several secondary objective points, because if they had ran I would've lost by a far larger margin)

2. A 14 man unit got assaulted by 10 slugga boyz and a PK warboss. They BEAT THE NOB TO DEATH, killed all but 2 boyz, and took a wound off the warboss. They lost combat twice, stayed in, and even when they ran, managed to keep from being swept. These are WS 2 guardsmen by the way. Only 3 survived, but both myself and my opponent were speechless. They turned around and shot the orks in the face next turn.

3. Rolled inspired command for FRFSRF twice, and passed it two other times with regular rolls. They passed more orders over the tournament than all my heavy weapon squads combined.

4. Killed their own weight in models every game with lasgun fire, often times hitting at around 50% accuracy.

For all intents and purposes, they literally walked around, did as they pleased, and killed whatever looked at them funny. Meanwhile, stormtroopers, Marbo, and regular guardsmen were dying by the droves. I think I only got to send in 3 waves over the entire tourney, the friggin conscripts just would not die (because I'm an idiot, I forgot to kill them myself) This may not seem like a big deal to some, but any IG player will realize that what I have just described should be impossible. Even worse, this isn't the first time they've done this. Literally every game they pull crap like this. I'm about to the point where I'd rather have them than the regular platoon infantry squads

So, any of you guys ever had a unit do something like this?

I ran into this on the weekend. I simply couldn't roll even the average. This resulted in a few infuriating situations.

6 savable wounds on a Carnifex killing it. Genestealers accomplishing nothing in assault. Deathspitters repeatedly not getting even 50% hits on a 4+, but then failing far too many 3+'s and 2+'s to wound.

This even cost me the game. I can't gripe too much - the dice are fickle.

Yeah. I love my priest to death, but more often than not, they dont' roll above a 4 or 5 on their 2D6 for armor penetration, which is always sad, because I love priests so much. Come to think of it, I also have a mildly unlucky streak with rolling 1s with my guard powerfists in general. I'd stick with power weapons, but I'm notoriously bad at rolling 5+s.

Meanwhile, my stormtroopers love scattering. It's not just that they scatter way more often than they should, but they always love scattering in the ONE direction that's off the board or onto the ONLY enemy unit nearby.

And then the plasma guns, oh don't get me started. My most common roll with a plasma at double-tap range is 1 hit and 1 overheat, which almost always kills the gunner, regardless of armor save. Once every few years, I get tempted by the plasma, and then I play about three or four games in a row where I consistently kill my own models more than my enemy, and then I remember why I don't bother. Going back through my old battle reports makes me cry.

On the plus side, the one that really stands out for me is sentinels. I generally don't take them, but when I do, they're oddly lucky for me. I take them with lascannons, and they hit like normal, but their lascannons seem to be S14 Ap1 weapons somehow. I mean, I'll point to this game for an example. A pair of lascannon sentinels. Both shoot the monolith. One hits, the other misses. The one that hits pens the AV14, and explodes the monolith. This SINGLE SHOT on turn one phased out my opponent and won me the game.

I'm actually starting to notice what you're talking about with conscripts. A few games ago, my opponent throws down a drop pod with a bunch of FNP BA units. A nearby squad of conscripts passes a FRF order, and the 20 guys put down like 30 hits, and then my opponent can't be bothered to make armor saves or FNP saves against lowly conscripts. I've also had a few occasions where they have done mildly shockingly well (like surviving a tank shock, despite being right on the board edge).

We'll have to see if that kind of luck lasts, though.

Could it be that we're expecting so little from them, that literally any contribution they make is seen as unbelievable? I mean, it doesn't account for what happened to me today, but it could be why they seem to pull off such crazy stuff in other games.

Last game my Retributors (basically SoB devastators) had a perfect firing position and managed nothing except to kill a couple marines and shake a transport. They spent two turns shooting at a Razorback with their Faith power (Rending) active and didn't manage a single six on the penetration rolls.

On the other hand, a five-girl Dominion squad beat a pack of Fenrisian Wolves and a unit of Thunderwolf Cavalry in close combat - and then went on to Sweep the last fleeing Thunderwolf Cavalry.

Yup, some units do surprise you at times.

My Thousand sons seem to have an uncanny ability to only ever miss 3 times when they fire, not matter how many shots are going out only 3 will miss... Becomes a problem when the unit gets down to about 2-3 guys though.

I had one unit which had a profoundly negative impact on the dice rolls made to shoot at it.

It was an Ork trukk in 3rd that had a higher kill count than any other model in my army due to the inability of any models to glance or pen it on death or glory attempts.

I have since sold my Ork army but I made a point of keeping that Trukk.

I have one model, but he refuses to roll averagely in the right way. This lone rubric marine has super armor saves. saw him make 11 in a row once against an enemy HQ. on average Id say I roll saves about 80% of the time with him. Painted him special cause he is a baus.

On the contrary, my Sqaud Pyrae refuses to hit the broadside of a barn when they shoot, can't have em all be winners.

My Necron Immortal squads have, among my local gaming group, been given Manowar's "Die For Metal" as their official theme song.

They call themselves Immortals
They're the truest of the true...

They are the biggest death machine I've ever fielded, boasting more kills than even their Overlord. They just refuse to ever die, and they manage to murder the crap out of anything they go up against, no matter the odds. Thus far the most impressive was probably the game where they got mobbed by thirty or so Ork Boyz in close quarters and tarpitted for the entire game. But, at the bottom of turn six, it was the Immortals who were still standing.

This. Most people complain about plasma blowing up in their face. I rarely hit anything with my melta-vets, and when they do it's even more rare that I score a pen.

I have a scout with a missile launcher who, in one game, took out an ork battlewagon, a truck and ~20 boyz by himself. He was also the only survivor from my army in that game. Needless to say he earned his power armour.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."
