which one is the brood lord?

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

This one:

The big chunky Genestealer with the longer claws (all the better to rend you with!).

I come bearing more pics. I did not take these, and the quality is a bit off one some of them:

And the big important one:

So that confirms:

1 Sergeant w/SB + Power Sword
1 Sergeant w/Thunder Hammer & Storm Shield
5 Storm Bolter + Power Fist
1 Lightning Claw
1 Assault Cannon + Power Fist
1 Heavy Flamer + Power Fist
1 Storm Bolter + Chainfist

Oddly the Librarian is a no-show on that last pic, but we know he's in there.

And no duplicates. All different.

Yeah... full colour printing on specially cut card-stock ain't cheap. This was not a "minimum" outlay for them.

There is a rumour on one of the other sites (can't for the life of me remember which one now, sorry) that GW needed to release this to save the copyright. Hence the mystery box advertising campaign and limited run, it has guaranteed that they don't make a loss on the game (everyone rushing to order before it sells out) and has been a minimum outlay in production (card scenery) and advertising (none for a month or so except they are releasing a mystery box).
Don't know how true this is but would explain it all...

Thats an interesting theory if true, mainly as they'll have no choice but to re-release Dark Future and then Warhammer Quest eventually if thats correct.

Although that seems a short period for inactivity to loose a copyright. Not that I have much undertanding is said laws mind you.

I had heard that GW had sold the rights to space hulk to another company years ago (probably MB Games as they made space crusade, Keerunch (a bloodbowl lite) and hero quest).

This either expired or they bought it back recently and so Space Hulk. It was probably separate from the licence to produce a video game.

The copyright argument is bogus. Copyright lasts a lot longer than that, these days (lifetime of the creator + 70-odd years, depending on the country -- it's 70 in the UK).

You can't copyright the rules for a game, anyway -- only their expression (the specific words & diagrams etc. used to explain the rules), and associated material such as the art & design involved in creating the components.

That said, if GW had felt threatened by unauthorised derivations of Space Hulk, it would almost certainly strengthen their case regarding intellectual property disputes if they had a current or recent version of the game available. I would guess that's more likely to be down to a concern to protect the trademark than the copyright, though.

I don't know if the trademark on the name Space Hulk might expire if not exercised.

Kilkrazy wrote:TBH I hope not. One of the good points about original Spulk was that it only had as many rules as it needed.

As they added more weapons for the sake of selling mdoels, the quality of rules declined.

For example, the Lightning Claws and Thunder Hammer basically weren't worth using, as I recall. The AC and Grenade Launcher were good though.

Yeah, both the Thunderhammer/Storm Shield and Lightning Claws just sucked in 1st edition because they were both way too unreliable.

The TH/SS Termie still only got to roll one die in close combat (vs. the Stealer's three) although he did get +2 to his roll (and ties go to the Termie). The SS allowed the Termie to force the Stealer to re-roll one of his dice.

All it took was for the Termie to roll a '1' once and he was pretty much dead. Even with +2 to his roll there's nearly no way a Stealer is going to fail to roll more than a 3 on three dice, even if one of those results will have to be re-rolled.

So a TH/SS termie is going to die, its just a matter of how soon you roll a '1'. It could be the first roll, or you could go on a killer streak.

Of course you could also self-destruct which was pretty cool, but it did kill the Termie along with any other models in the section, so you had to make sure to clear the area out of your terminators first.

Lightning Claws were a little more reliable since the Termie got to roll 2 dice instead of 1 and got a +2 to his best result. I much preferred LCs over the TH/SH, but really they both were much, much worse than your standard termie.

So personally I do hope they tweak these two weapons a bit. And the Assault Cannon was pretty uber, so I'm wondering if they'll tone it down at all.

Has anyone gotten a good look at the rules? I'd love to hear anything, especially what the psychic power rules are like for the Librarian and how the Broodlord is different from a stealer.

gotta admit that i am unimpressed. big deal. i guess i was expecting something unique, something they've never done before. but i'm not a hater. cool models. if i played BA or nids, i'd buy. not quite sure why they used the weird mystery box, rumor/ no rumor, oh look, the rumors are true, not with a bang but a whimper, marketing plan. i think a $90 boardgame is gutsy, and in all honesty, i'm quite sure they will sell out. to all of those SH fanatics, enjoy!!!

I think the easter egg is perhaps the libbys name, who is, from what I've read, perhaps Mephiston before be vamps out.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the old fluff space marine chapters were much larger.

I think this is all pre-heresy/mid-heresy/post-heresy-pre-2nd-founding maybe?

Explanation 2:
The blood angels as well as other chapters have died out a number of times having been reestablished in name...

Explanation 3:
GW wrote the original fluff before any of the information about chapter sizes were established and then just simply carried it over.

Because the ship is lost in the warp for a thousand years or so right (reading from the teaser on the GW website)?
So they are investigating much later when the chapter is up to strength.
