I know myself that I follow these threads avidly, but I rarely have much to offer- I'm not great at painting or converting, but I really, really enjoy these threads and the work you put into sharing them with us. My comments would often just be along the lines of "Wow!" or "I'm inspired!"
Edit: I also know many of my friends joined Dakkadakka on the strength of the Painting and Modelling sections alone, and enjoy the fact that the traffic is low but of very high standard. They also rarely post, but we oooh and ahhh over the contributions regularly.
I'm sorry if you've put one up somewhere that I've missed, but have you done any truescale Terminators? Your truescale marine here is fantastic, I was thinking a truescale terminator would be mindblowing.

Hey Migs, long time no see! It can be a little frustrating with the lack of replies at times, but I much prefer this to the "Omg", "Kewl" and "Roxx" posts of some forums.

Please, please keep us posted, I for one greatly enjoy this bouncing back and forth of creative ideas.

Other than that, merry christmas. Any chance of getting the final Jde vessel battlerep up soon?

Looks like the discussion is dying down again in these parts. Our small hobby forum with 15 or so members ranks double the replies than dakka. I'm almost considering of copy pasting some of the stuff to here to go deeper in to thinking around the projects - but then I guess with size of the board comes certain shallowness on the depth of discussion and it's more about sharing than interaction.

It's the holidays ^_-. I'm seeing a difference on my blog in replies/views as well.

As for Jarg, I really enjoy the digital camo effect you've been able to achieve on him (as I've mentioned elsewhere ^_-). The moonlight feel definitely comes through with your palette, especially in the blues. And as always, the weathering is really top notch.

Is that a subtle brown/tan I see used on the black for the pouches?

At first I thought I was looking at the Inq. sized marine!

Your painting and converting skills have made leaps and bounds over the years.

Please tell me how you did the weathering on the Marine.

Hello Sir!! LOOOONG time no see. How are you??

Even the past two years I think have made a huge leap. A lot of practice and a MA degree have really changed a lot of not only the doing, but thinking too. I'm also much more curious about just experimenting my ideas, rather than trying to please anyone or stick to a successful formula as so many painters above certain "pedigree".

For the Marine I used mostly greys painted on with a small brush trying to mimic reallife reference. For Jargassor I used just foam stippling, because I needed less control.

You as well my friend!

We've yet to fight it. It's becoming impossible to get everyone in the same place at the same time. Hence Hammer is going to use a different system that allows one on one games without a GM for our next campaign. We still haven't locked a date for the finale.

Migsula: Those extended Terminators are fantastic!
What I love about them is how closely they match what I see in my head when I read Horus Rising and the other excellent space marine novels.

On the topic at hand, I imagine your towering marine is going to attract a lot of fire in Necromunda style games. I think the fact that you've made him so much bigger will go a long way to making him fairer too. Smaller gangers will be able to slip away from him through gaps, while he must move slower perhaps to squeeze his large base and hulking form?

Actually, the =I=munda (Necromunda) engine makes real strength in numbers, so even a hugely powerful and fluffily statlined marine, will be balanced by lack of numbers.

I started painting the Psyker. As with Jargassor, I spent a few days just contemplating on the scheme and not getting started (though this time I blame an awful stomach flue for the not getting started part) and then I just knew...so he's going to be green.

It's interesting how blue and green have been some of the least used colors in my selection (and in part that was the reason I selected Alpha Legion originally). Well richly saturated greens and blues anyway. What keeps them non candy, is the dark shadows and the pale moonlight I integrate, but still this bunch is so different to my other work.

As with Alpharius. I'm taking PIP pictures so you see the weirdness in the process.

I also try to catch a sense of material feel. On the Marine armour I smoothed it and with Jargassor's blue shirt I left it on purpose. Varnish ate it away quite a bit like I assumed, and now it's quite right sort of heavy, woollen garment.

With the psyker I intend to try something much more ambitious, a silky, semi transparent effect, which includes freehand. It may end up looking not how I intended, but then definitely something interesting and educational. I don't even like green :S

It's not something one can demand, but needs to learn to inspire/provoke/create, so I will need to learn away and will try to explain the process more and see if people are interested to engage, of course I will also share the images as normal. There was a clear and present increase in discussion when you lot joined from Warseer and it has really benefitted dakka modeling!!

So it's a two way street of course.

I'll try to post more feedback and ideas, but I'm not promising wondrous insights or anything.
When I get myself sorted (ie. get steady employment and a source of income) I intend to start my own blogs of this nature. I have plans for some Hruud, a couple of Kroot, genestealer cult and some other beasties for my planned dark heresy campaign. My hope is to make them all plastic as much as possible.
Hopefully that will inspire some of my lurker friends to get involved in the discussion.

fair enough! So far I've been doing my best to throw my ideas and suggestions at the various =I=munda projects out here!

I'm curious, what exactly are you planning on including your Legion warband? So far you've got:
-Alpharius
-Jargassor
-Psyker

So what's next? IIRC you wanted to keep the warband rather small right? Are you planning on building some NPC's for the upcoming campaign as well?

Yes you have been brilliant good sir!

I'm planning to keep this group to 4 or five. I want to make another model out of the Empire Wizard kit to show it's flexibility...first I thought I'd do a xenologist, but now I'm having visions of a skinny robed guy with a heavy stubber or a big combat shotgun. In which case the xenologist would be based on something else. I have one tiny idea based on a joke Wehrkind once made that I am hoping to include. But more of that later

I'm also entertaining ideas about Flect bearers! The psyker has a "flect" mirror in front of him, I quite like the idea and think it would be great to have a few small familiars or psyber creatures carrying some more of them. This would be wargear though.

The NPC stuff is Hammer's and Sickbunny's responsibility now - but I am planning a proper, finished vehicle this time around!

Sounds like fun, I´m going to have to give the wizard kit a better look soon, it seems to be an excellent kit...

For the xenologist, you could have a look at the labs in Aliens, with the facehuggers in jars and such... Might be able to incorporate something like that on the base.

And yay for vehicles! I´ve been inspired to do something fun with the gyrocopter concepts in the AOBR box, but I´ll have more on that later, in a new thread somewhere.

Hmm, I've got a crazy idea for the xenobiologist!

Instead of servo skulls or cyber cherubs you would have some sort of anti-grav platform carrying a see through container with body parts or just the heads or smaller Tyranids or even a Genestealer's head! Kind of similar to those jars with the facehuggers in them in Aliens like Xanthos mentioned!

As for the " familiars", you might want to use some "slave" like models in the form of converted plastic Ghouls. Humans turned into mindless creatures who are only able to do their masters willing. Almost like a Servitor but then on a psykic level!

A xenobiologist is a great idea. I'm trying to think how you could best represent it on a model. I was a parasitologist for a while and tended to have lots of random sample tubes full of murky medium with half seen horrors lurking in them. This sort of stuff hanging off his belt would be very evocative. The trick would be to make it subtle enough that it didn't look silly but still easily noticeable and recognisable. Having seen your other work I have plenty of confidence that you could manage it. Other things would be scalpels and other medical tools, like a mad doc, but more sleek and menacing. DE Haemonculi are sort of specialised Xenobiologists, maybe the range has some inspiration? An enslaved grox or carnasaur could be a fun project, too.

Sorry for the lack of posting mate, I've been a busy man with work and festive committments, back into the modelling swing again now though!

Jargassor looks great, the camo in particular looks spot on. I recently found my old =I= rulebook and have been leafing through the artwork for more inspiration and ideas for face. I've also been experimenting with sculpting some faces and its going well. I find that while the empire heads are good in some respects for the kinds of mini's we are both making, they lack alot of detail and definition due to being some of the earlier "computer sculpted" mini's.

For the xenobiologist, have you decided on a style or theme yet? Is he a snivelling lab/desk jockey or is he an "out in the field, knee deep in xeno's guts" type? I think this decision will really impact heavily on the parts selection and overall look of the mini. The DKoK quartermaster surgeon has some nice bits that could be useful for whichever way you decide. However, I'm not sure if the empire wizard kit works for the "in the field" type.

I look forward to seeing which type of vehicle you go with. When do we get to see Hammers finished arvus lighter too?!

Cheers,

Dante

The whole lot will have the "in the field" look - and some how the Empire Wizard kit not naturally fitting that look obviously makes it a nice challenge I want to tackle. As always, the way it ends up being decided is in the building process, something sparks and works and leads to something more than was intended. Or utter failure and trying again gives a new unforeseen result. Both formulas can be successful, latter just takes more time

The Arvus lander is Nothern's work actually! And pics are in the Jade Vessel thread.

Thanks for all the comments and posts guys.

Here's something totally uncensored and messy for you to see, quite an adventure this one has been and still a long way from success or failure, a little early to tell. I still haven't applied a single highlight, so plenty of options left. It does show how much you can do with white primer alone. I must admit this has been fun but sort of intimidating too as I am purposefully doing things you ain't supposed to do and being very "grimgothicnistic" rather than smooth.

Biggest question mark is the "shrouded" effect on the face, which has a lot of potential but really clashes with the bare hands. Should he wear gloves, or should the hands also be shrouded? The saturation of the green still worries me, so I should HL with pale blue greens.

The pics are quite "raw" and eat away a lot of shades, but give you some indication of what's up, so I am sharing them.

I'm also yet to add the "flect" mirror which will be integral part of this miniature.

That cloak is DELICIOUS.

I saw the first photo, and doubted it somewhat, but the Blue actually ties it in nicely. Somehow how it fades to darkness in the low parts is very mysterious and complementary to the rest of the model. It almost looks like he's floating on darkness.

The scale between Jarg and the 'Mancer is very nice, thanks to the pretty updated Empire Kits. They definately look like a useful Human shape to base the conversions off (i.e. Not Rambo.)

I'm somehow not getting the shrouded head-look. The hands surprised me for a second, but then again, this guy probably hasn't seen much Natural sun in his lifetime, has he? The jury here is out on where to go with the head and face.

Looking forward to moar!

Great work on the highlighting and going from light to dark on the cloak (not to mention the freehand which is very effective). Was this accomplished with a series of washes?

With regard to the shrouding, when I saw the model from the back, it looked pretty good. When I saw the front picture, my eyes were drawn to his right (the screen's left) hand, and then to the skull on his staff. The shroud, along with the darkness on the chest draws my eyes away from the middle of the model (which is usually the focal point). Unless this is intentional, which would be cool in its own right, you might want to consider darkening the hands as well, or deciding where you want to draw someone's eye.

These threads have been great for inspiration for me and my group, and we've started a World In Arms campaign. We're not quite ready for the "openness" of I-munda, at least not yet :-)

Can't wait to see more.

AH!! SALVATION! I added two thin glazes of "pale blue green" vallejo for HL on the robe and it totally translated the moonlight feel and killed the extensive saturation.

So relieved.

I agree with you guys about the issues with the shrouding, I'm not getting it yet either. The skull is meant to be the focal point of this mini, a deliberate choice to contrast with the dark, non defined, head shape. I highlighted it all the way up to white to really ram it home. But alas, the head vs. hands thing ain't clicking yet, so I think I'll try darkening the hands.

And yes, this lot doesn't see much daylight, but the key idea for this whole lot is to have them "lit by the pale glow of moonlight". You or I wouldn't look very tanned in full moonlight!

There's a radical thought bubbling in my head... to remove Ghul's head all together! all the more sickening with the mirror facing a head that isn't there, and the skull with lots of eye-lenses and viewer things connected to him with some heavy cabling...

Great stuff Migs. I´m also having trouble with the new guys head, but maybe a wash (or three) of badab black or similar could do the trick.

You could also try and distend the shape of the head using GS to get a more billowing smoky effect. Though it might be a tad late for that now.

And of course, losing the head altogether is an option too, though I´m not sure it would feel right, might just end up looking unfinished or broken, unless possibly, you could put the cables from the staff into the hole where the head should be...

Just brainstorming here.
