Thanks a lot! I really just wanted a piece of terrain, but this is going a bit beyond that at this point, haha.

master of asgard wrote:This is totally incredible! Serious commitment to the cause here man.

I think it's the interior which really puts this from being simply very awesome to just mind-blowing incredible. There's so much scope for what you could do with that, although I understand why you might want to keep it fairly basic. If I could suggest one thing, it would be to add some shells for the belly guns lying around inside, otherwise what would they fire?

Looking forward to seeing it in all it's glory.

I've been thinking a lot about your post and others like it, and I think you're right. I've already added so much work into making it work both as terrain and as a playable piece, I really should expand my original scope a bit to really go the extra mile. I'll have you know I went and bought a ton if stuff for it today, so I can add everything from ammo belts to tool boxes to shells and powder. Whats a few more weeks?

Aww, thanks dude! I wasn't offended, I just figured I'd both point out your post was a bit strong, and make a joke at the same time. For sure link me when you do get your thread rolling.
Taking pictures is just about lighting, and having a somewhat solid color for the background. (It doesn't have to be white, just a good neutral color. try setting up next to a wall.) Get the camera as close as you can while still having it remain in focus. Also, look for a little flower icon and make sure its on. Even most camera phones have a macro setting nowadays. Finally, set the camera on something so it doesnt wobble while snapping the picture. If you can tell me what brand and model of camera you have, I can tell you how to squeeze all the juice out of it that you can.

Your wish is my command!

UPDATE TIME!

First up, I built mounts for the turrets. here they are clay-mounted to the structure.

Next, I cut some very thick sheet styrene for the shoulder armor base.

I mean, seriously thick. like, 1/4 inch thick. As in, I had to break out my high speed plastic cutting wheel. (And broke one of my Dremels in the process! I needed to learn how to use the thick sheets for work anyhow, the lesson cost me sixty bucks damn it!)

I then checked to be sure everything fit together proppa.

Next, I started adding detail to the armored plates.

I gotta wait for the clay to dry before I can put the final details on (ugh, rivets) but here they are mosty done.

And with cannons!

Up next is the front armor plates.

Guns look great! I like the glyphs on the barrels!

Very Okry catwalks and platforms on top too! Awesome!

Aslo, was there a specific reason to use such thick sheets? Wouln't foam core be lighter? Just curious.

Thanks! I'll be keeping that same muted color palette. I'll probably paint something cool over the main hull, but for the most part I just want a simple rust job with glyphs, checkers, and dags here and there. Very similar to my terrain, actually.

That is an awesome work of Gork (or maybe Mork) if you're not sure it fits in the car! As for the overall progress pic, I got you one at the end of this update hoss.

I got a mock-up pic in this update but I agree, I can't wait till it's fully built and painted!

Why, I have no idea what you are talking about, good sir! lets take another look at that cannon picture.

hmm... Yeah, my bad, thats all me. I'll try and at least fix the colors in this update! (as for the style, most of my army was casted in the eighties, so i'm gonna say it matches my army "style". yeah, thats the ticket! "style.")

dsteingass wrote:Are the shoulder mounts PVC pipe? Or have you found a source of Styrene tube that size and are deliberately holding out on telling me where such marvels exist to be ordered? lol

Alas, it is just PVC. I have found a company that makes styrene tubes in larger gauges but they dont make them in any size smaller than eight feet long, making shipping too much. what I will recommend is make sure the hardware store you're shopping at has several grades of PVC, along with cold pipe PVC. you can also find fun tubing in the electrical section.

mullet_steve wrote:Loving the progress so far... keep up all the excelent work

Aslo, was there a specific reason to use such thick sheets? Wouln't foam core be lighter? Just curious.

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, I had two good reason for using such thick card. The first has to do with the model. I needed the bases strong enough to stand on their own, they will remain removable as structure point damage and I didn't want them to warp or break during regular usage.

The other reason has to do with my job, a small part of my work is making movie props. Actors are notorious for breaking stuff, and for my next gig I need to make some strange handguns and rifles. I had the idea of using PVC and thick styrene as the base, so the guns are basically unbreakable. (I dont work on the kind of movies that have the budget to make duplicates of everything, haha.) I wanted to experiment with thick sheets without the time deadline floating over my head. To that end I call it a sucess. Even though I lost a Dremel, I replaced it with a fine multi-tool. I'll be trying it out on the thick plastic tomorrow when I build the front shoulder plates. if it doesn't work, I'll upgrade to a Zip-Saw.

Enough chewing the fat, it's UPDATE TIME!

I got both the shoulders and the guns riveted and primed. I just want to take a moment to exclaim how much I hate rivets. my hands are now warped into strange claws, I'm typing with my pinkies. I hate rivets. I mean, if you don't put them on, Ork stuff doesn't look right, and that's the first thing people howl.
"Why don't you have rivets?"
"I like you build, but it needs more rivets."
"you know what you should do? you should put rivets on your rivets so you can rivet while you rivet."

Thats all facinating, but really now. Orks have ENTIRE UNITS ARMED WITH BLOW TORCHES AND ARC WELDERS! really? in the dark future no one can just weld and call it a day?!?

Anyway, hers some cannons with rivets.

Followed by some shoulder armor with rivets.

Left shoulder.

Right shoulder.

Both shoulders with cannons!

Lastly, some mock-up pictures of the assembled model. (he slipped off his boots mid-picture taking, serves me right for taking pictures on a drafting table that's at an angle. only one damaged armor plate!)

Bonus infantry view!

Next up is making the last shoulder plates. After thats its going to be a matter of going over every part of the model and doing final touches. Like I said in my last update, I got a lot of neat stuff to cram into his different pieces and parts, so it should'nt be too boring!

I'm going to end this post with a general "where I'm at" update. The boy has really taken a shine to painting, he is really spending the time needed to improve his skill. To that end, he has asked for more painting lessons, I responded by assembling two units of Nobs and a few Warbosses. I'll be painting with him throughout his Christmas break, so updates may slow a bit on the Great Gargant. I'll only be painting Nobs when he wants to paint, other than that I'll be working on the Gargant so there will still be updates in this thread.

One last bit O' buisness. With all the stuff I got for his insides, I constantly come back to the HUGE center belly gun. I have rounds to fit all his other guns, but the center gun is just comically giant. I've been thinking of converting it into an assult ramp, and avoiding the "gun" entirely. the other option is to fill it with scatter-shot, and make it look like a blunderbus. this would entail it looking like a one-shot weapon filled with various battlefield junk. any thoughts? I just dont want to leave the center tube as a "cannon."

There's a little tutorial here on how to make some really convincing welds, about half way down the page> http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/60/379581.page Sorry if it's a bit late but it might be worth thinking about!

As for the belly gun, you're right, it's huge. Any shell for it would fill up a massive amount of space inside. Both ideas you've put forward make sense. Maybe you could combine the two? Firstly, it's a huge blunderbuss firing spanners, scrap, grots, rivets etc, and then after that one shot, they open the breach and a load of boyz pile out.
Ooh or what about that old night goblin catapult which fires gobboz with wings at people, maybe a 40k version of that in the belly gun? If all else fails, just remember that they're orks, it doesn't have to make sense! The red wunz go fasta and if we sayz itz gonna fire then itz gonna fire by Gork (or Mork)!!

I like the "Ork-a-pult" idea, you could fire 10 Orks at a time, to say a distance of, what 36"? Then roll a d10 to see how many live. You would have to roll for scatter of course, that a given, right?

Or, the Boarding Ramp could also work. surround the barrel with some sort of melta-type guns, that can spin around the barrel. That is your "breaching drill", then hoards of Orks pour through the breached opening!

And of course the Giant Grotzooka sounds good too.

But back to the Mocked-up Piture. That looks so awesome! I mean, just super cool!

I could also do a "Kan Kannon," and have it fire special bullet shaped Kans or Deff dreads.

I'd just make the models cone shaped, and build in retractable guns/arms/legs/bosspoles.

I wont decide till I get the feet mounted, I'm worried about the clearance for an assult ramp if I go that route, it wont work if there's eight inches of drop out the door!

Thats what dangerous terrain tests are for. or you could make it every model takes a strenth 5 ap nothing hit and vehicles could be stunned on a roll of 1 and imobilised on a 6? maybe

You could stuff a huge bob-omb style deal in there and say it rolls out of the belly gun and bounces across the field smashing everything in it's path until it explodes, or stops rolling. Then all da boyz come rampaging out of the belly gun through a hatch in the back pf the barrel, like MoA was saying.

Although, the idea did pop into my head of all the grots dragging huge chunks of busted tank and plane and trukk and building and-and-and... and then having it just spew out all over the place... once.

I got the last of the stuff I need for his guts, so I should get around to that soon. As to the rivet situation, it's not the skill needed to sculpt weld lines, even if you made an entire model that was clearly welded, peeps would ask for rivets. (to be honest, I like the way they look, I just hate doing them. one of the few things that really gets me.)

And I got the Belly gun sorted out, see below.

I really like music. I like Swedish death metal, hard-core rap, pop music, country, blue-grass, opera, riot girl, you name it and I probably like it. I have about nine hundred CD's at last count. Of all those CD's, the one towards the top in the picture is by Tom Waits, the album "Rain Dogs." On that album is my favorite song of all time, "Gun Street Girl." check it out, yo. you will like. (I'm a huge Sabbath and Faith no More fan too!)

Anywho, on with the UPDATE!

I got the belly gun sorted out. I looked at all the options, and went with one that both fit the theme, and would not take years to do. I went with a GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon.

This gun fires a steady 3800 rounds per second. (usually in two second bursts to save on cannon barrels.) This idiotic cannon fires a 30mm explosive shell, weighs over 4,000 pounds, (comprising 16% of the planes total weight) and can hit 80% of its rounds within twenty yards of its target at long range.

Just in case all that isn't inspiration enough, the cannon of silliness is only mounted into two planes, and both were custom built to carry the gun. Thats right, the A-10 Warthog (also called the "Tank Killer" for good reason) started as a gun, then the engineers built a plane around the cannon to carry it. When this thing shoots, the plane itself slows by a few miles an hour.

Plus it looks cool, so I built one for my Gargant.

Step one, get some plastic tubing, some Bic pens, a glue bottle top, and a bit of plastic mailing tube with a endcap.

Next, drill and cut to size, then paint.

Glue together, add some clay and details, and some final paint touch ups!

Lastly, mount it!

It's so snug, I wont be gluing it into place. this also gives me the option of changing it out later, and making terrain out of it.

I also got the front armor plates for the shoulders done.

Right shoulder (with some bolt-on rokkit action!)

Left shoulder (with his proppa name and rank!)

Finally, to round out this post I have the final shape of his feet. I kept the add-on sections, but brought them closer and shaped them a little better.

BONUS PICTURE!!!!

This is my favorite scale shot to date, here are the clogs with my shoe for scale. I wear a size twelve, which means my Great Gargant wears about a nine, nine and a half!

Up next, I start finishing last details on all his parts! also, my Duke Nukem nob!
