Hello,

In the past few days I've been working on a custom 3D model of a Thousand Sons Daemon Prince, and I wanted to share it (included its STL file for 3D printing). And of course, any feedback is more than welcome.

A few renders:

And a 3D preview on Sketchfab (altough the detail is relatively low when compared with the final 3D printing file) :
http://sketchfab.com/3d-models/tzeentch-daemon-prince-7d84bea947904d48ac452acd028bc0f1

I will post the STL file soon as the model still need some final cleaning and processing.

Thanks!

On the one hand, OH MY GOD THAT LOOKS AMAZING!

On the other hand, I'm not a fan of the way the heads stick out from his chest.

On the first hand, wowza. Still looks gorgeous!

1) Chest head placement is ugly, remove it entirely
2) replace jetpack with wings. mechanical wings would fit the model better (think heldrake design). don't make them wide open, but rather half opened wings (pretty much like a current daemon prince)
3) Weapon needs to be more memorable... a halberd/staff hybrid would fit the army better than a sword
4) maybe, and that's just a random idea, the bird head could be integrated into the helmet. not sure if it should be a visor, or the helmet itself. maybe look into a mix of Horus/Osiris head from egyptian art. maybe take some cues from the "gods of egypt" movie...

I'm personally a fan of the head chest. I think it's very cool.

I love the model as a whole, despite knowing some aren't keen on the same design elements.

If you do remove or change things, I think that having this as an available file would be nice for those who do like it.

I agree, its very in fitting with the Lords of Change, what makes it look odd is the marine head above it.

One or the other.

Looks great. For those that don't like the head coming out if the chest is perhaps a secondary version that replaces it with a jem or something?

I'm a fan of the two headed daemon prince. It makes plenty of thematic sense for the god of scheming to give you a second head. You can't hide anything from him if he's always watching you.

I'm not bothered by the upper head, except for the fact that is looks so... static? I think if it was looking the other way to the chest head and the clawed-eye hand was pointed where he was looking it would work better? But that is just me.

I like the dual head design, the model's best feature IMO. I would turn the head to the right and down a bit, to give the impression that he is assessing different parts of the battlefield at once.

Seriously though, so much done right on this model! The shaping of the armor around the chest, the leg structure, the backpack... Great work.

Absolutely awesome. A version with wings would be really cool too; I like the semi-mechanical wings idea suggested by someone.

I agree, an alt version with wings and a chest gem would be fantastic.

Either way, great model!

Thank you all for the feedback. I do realize that the model look quite stiff, but it was to depict an almost golem like creature (because of the nature of the Thousand Sons). And the Daemon head was meant to show the marine champion slowly turning into a full Lord of Change. I guess that the original idea was sound but the execution lacking.

Adding a set of wings should not be difficult, although time consuming (because of the feathers), so I may get back to the model in the future.

Don't think it's lacking in execution at all - really great model.

P.S. Can anyone offer some advice on what materials and method I'd want to use when ordering a print of this model from one of the main sites? I've never ordered a full miniature, as opposed to just little bits, and the options on are a bit overwhelming. It looks to me like the main options are SLS, SLA, or Polyjet - this last one is quite a bit more expensive, the other two are almost the same cost. It seems like SLA offers the highest detail, but most brittle product, with supports you have to remove, while SLS is more flexible, doesn't require supports, but has lower detail quality? Is there a clear winner for miniatures?

Also, is there any reason that scaling the model down a bit using their interfaces - say to 70% of its base size - would result in a loss of quality?

Thanks in advance, I know nothing about this topic.

The bird head...cock it's head to the side by 15-20 degrees IMO would give it a more organic feel.

Top head/bottom head is throwing me for a loop; I like a lot of elements of the model but I'm less sure about the overall composition. Would you mind if I took the file and cut it up and fiddled with it?

I dont know what site you are looking to have it printed, but I would definitely get it printed with an SLA printer. Resin printing is way higher resolution, doesn't have anywhere near the sensitivity to heat (pla will melt in the summer if you leave it out there too long) and doesn't have the horizontal "build lines" that you will have to sand and smooth out.

If you want to, I could upload a file version with all the separate different parts, it could make it easy to work with.

I love it. I think a variant with battle damage to the helmet showing it's empty would be cool.

That's a nice painted version there. I think I'd make the bird a slightly different colour to have it stand out a bit but great to see it in the real world done up so well.

dang, file does not seem to be available anymore!

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"
