Thanks for the tip!

I work for a roofing merchant so it'll be nice and easy (and free!) to get hold of some broken slate.

Glad to help Ben!

As this is my current blog I thought I would let people who are enjoying my Emperor's Wings project know about two of my past projects that I have just photographed and put up on Dakka Dakka.
First there are my Word Bearers which was the quickest army I have ever painted at about two and a half weeks. The link to the Army profile is:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Reaper_Man_2020%27s_Word_Bearers

I have also put up my Dark Angels that are not quite finished but took me about 6 months to do after work etc. The link is here:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Reaper_Man_2020%27s_Dark_Angels

Hope you all enjoy and of course feel free to comment on the discussion page!

Hey there. Love your painting work, the red looks fantastic. Painted a techmarine recently, and the dark red tones are a lot of fun, and great to highlight too.

One thing, I saw your masters of the chapter, and thought they looked quite odd. The helmet heads look quite large and almost a bit bobbleheady to me. Have you thought about painting them up yet? Be great to see them painted and see if it is just those photos of the metal/plastic parts that looked odd.

Cheers, good luck with this amazingly huge army, I am jealous of your time and motivation

Thanks, I'm glad you like the army! As for the heads, well I wanted as few as possible models without helmets so I replaced the others with plastic helmets and I think it is just a quirk of the two different materials in the photo. I'm saving the best models to paint until last as motivation can be waning towards the end of a project but they are such gorgeous models that I'm itching to paint them even now!

I've done a picture of the models painted so far.

So I've got a command squad, a tactical squad, two dreadnoughts and a terminator squad oh and I've just realised that I forgot to put Captain Cadmus in the picture so there's him too!

Well managed to squeeze in a bit more work on the chapter! My rate of work might slow down a bit as I have started my Golden Demon entries in earnest for later this year and they will take up the majority of my time (They will remain top secret until after the competition but I will take loads of wip pics and put up a blog post the Demon) My entries this year will be completed in this order and the ones that are done will be entered; Forge world THEODORE BRUCKNER AND REAPER,Forge world EMPIRE IRONSIDES HANDGUNNERS, My Forge World tactical squad for this army, Forge world ELYSIAN TAUROS ASSAULT VEHICLE, Forge world LUGFT HURON CHAPTER MASTER OF THE ASTRAL CLAWS converted for this chapter. I seriously doubt that all these will be finished in time but I will at least have started all of them shortly!

Anyway back to the progress on this chapter!

Started my 2nd Tactical Squad to finally make a legal army;

Painted the shoulder pads yellow and did the codex grey undercoats for the chapter markings and tac arrows;

Then painted in the white with several layers of well watered down skull white;

Well that's it for the progress so far I do aim to get these guys finished in the next two weeks and this week I am hoping to get the majority of the vehicles done as they don't need too much work to finish off. I'll keep you all posted!

Ok guys, more progress to show you today!

First I touched in all the black areas required on the Tac Squad and gave them a wash of Badab Black.

Then I based the marines using a combination of the basing kit pieces, the slate (medium and small) and the normal basing sand. I also greyed up skulls and iconography. The bases are inked black whilst the PVA is still drying and left to dry then wet brushed codex grey with a top wet brush of skull white.

I then painted in the eye lenses using Dark Angels Green as a base colour. Then mixed a 50:50 mix of DA Green and Skull white to place a small line on the lense, finally putting a spot of Skull white and drawing it slightly along the thin line. The finishing touch is to cover it all with Tamiya Clear Green being careful not to go over the spot of skull white. I also highlighted the shoulder pad's yellow. A top highlight layer on the red was done using red gore.

Here are some close ups of the marines so far;

Finally the Serg;

Well plenty more to do this bank holiday weekend!

Ok fast on the heals of finishing my 2nd tactical squad I've started to tackle the vehicles. Here are a few pics of the progress so far;

My Assault Cannon Razorback which i have painted the base colours for the name plaque and the imperial eagle on the front;

I then decided to add a bit of interest by painting loads of skulls on the front wing, first basics in black and codex grey. I also painted the chapter symbol on the other side as well;

Then another stage of highlighting mixing in some skull white to the codex grey;

A final highlight of skull white to finish it off;

Then fill in the top section too;

I also touched in the black sections on the Drop pod, Landspeeder and Rhino and then dry brushed some Boltgun Metal on to the metal bits on the rhino;

Well time to call it a night, I'll try and get some more done this week as I am only at work three days this week thanks to the Royal Wedding!!

Thanks guys, I am painting a gaming army so some of it will be a bit "Meh" especially with how many infantry models I need to get through. However I do want some artistic flares in there to keep the interest in the models and hopefully it will make a great army to see on the table top! I just don't have the time to make every model special :(

So far the skulls have taken about two hours to do, I want them on both sides at the front and I'm seeing how I go as to whether or not to do them on the back too. I also haven't thought about the other Rhino/Razorback yet (honestly I'm trying not to think about if I have to do them there too!)

As people have shown interested in the skulls and seem inspired I have painted the other side tonight and taken more stage by stage photos to make a mini tutorial!

First outline the skulls in chaos black, Don't worry about being neat, just have fun with them and remember if they don't look quite right then they can always be alien skulls!

I tend to start with some big ones first like this;

Then fill in the gaps between the bigger ones with smaller ones and as the gaps get smaller then paint partial skulls as if hidden by the ones on top;

Once you have completed the outlines then fill in the skulls with codex grey. Try and be as neat as possible but don't worry too much if it isn't perfect you can touch up in the final stages.

Now mix about 50:50 Skull white and Codex Grey and apply a highlight as if the light is coming down from above the skulls just like you would on a model.

Once you have completed that stage then you need to put some Skull white on as the final highlight. After that just neaten up the skulls with Chaos Black sorting out the outlines and eyes where you have accidentally painted over them.

Here is the finished effect!

Hope that has been informative, I took about 2hrs 30 mins to do so the last estimate wasn't far off but I suppose I hadn't done a day at work too last time!
