Just thought I'd give a quick report.

Had a very nice time. Small tourney, 10 people. Thing 2 (my 9-year old) and I ran a 1k Space Wolves army together. He did the dice rolling and moving, I plotted strategy and made sure we had the rules right.

First game was "surprise" objectives against Necrons. We won 11-4, helped tremendously that the 3 objectives on his end of the table didn't end up being as valuable as the two on ours.

Next turn we were at top table & faced a daemon army in a kill point mission. Nasty piece of work, but we got a huge break when a bloodthirster's charge failed to land home. We won 4-2.

Still at the top table for game 3, but now we were in second.. we faced yet another chaos daemon army that was nearly a carbon copy of the last one. It was a "relic" mission. We had a really good plan going in and nearly snagged and bagged the relic, only the unit that had it was forced to take an LD test and failed. We had regained possession of the relic by games end but the massive S9, AP2 pieplates from the soul grinders and other shooting was just too much. Great game, but we lost 2-1.

Unfortunately, the dismal point situation of the last two games dropped us all the way down to 4th.

Very fun games though and a great chance to socialize at dinner later on.

$230 for 5 TWC, 18 grey hunters, 2 rhinos, 1 las/plas razorback, 12 long fangs, 3 wolf guard, 2 rune priests and 1 wolf priest.

All painted beautifully in my opinion. Not much blending but they're crisp and clean with wonderful edge highlighting and lots of painted on detail. A kind of old-school paint job executed extremely well. Best of all the artist is local, so if I want to add a few bits here and there, I can just ask him about his techniques (which I've already done actually).

And oh yeah... Thing 2 is a dead duck now, he's already looking forward to future tournaments. Trick is to find these "casual" events to take him to. A lot of the local tournaments are really serious affairs with big-time 40k talent playing very competitively. This was more like a gathering of friends who decided to play 40k together for a day. Mostly kids (not children... I mean young adults) and many just starting the hobby... so most of the armies are either unpainted or only partially painted. Even though I like playing painted armies better, I understand the reasons and am happy to show up with my painted stuff to hopefully serve as some inspiration for the folks to keep working on their armies.

And it was very much like a gathering of friends. It was funny to see the guys at the shop trying to curb there language because of Thing 2 when they clearly weren't used to having to worry about it. (Which I appreciated greatly by-the-way.) Not that they are especially foul-mouthed, but things have a tendency to slip out occasionally in adult conversation. Afterwards, the whole tourney packed up and went to a great burger joint/bar across the street for dinner. Couldn't ask for a better gaming experience!

That sounds like really good fun, Gits! You are sole handedly convincing me to actually do some gaming, the social aspects just sound lovely. It's really focusing me on getting my marines ready to go so thanks, matey!

Second batrep is up. Third will have to wait, promised the young'un we'd take the boat out today.

Call of Fenris vs. Chaos Daemons

In the tournament there were...
2 chaos deamons
2 chaos marines
2 necron
1 eldar
1 SW
1 IG/DA
1 GK

The top 4 finishers were 2 deamons, eldar and SW... in that order.

Your little updates throughout the day have forced me to go back to my roots. I pulled out my SW codex, and I've been plotting and planning for my 40k campaign I'm running this Friday. Glad you and Thing 2 had fun, and that army looks fantastic

Curious. What was the Eldar running?

Nice batreps, btw. Nice that you could play with your son, too. Very cool!

6 scatter walkers, warp spiders, guardians... Eldrad I think. I don't know for sure, never faced him.

Interesting. Spiders looked like they would be effective. Kind if expected a Wraithknight. Maybe too expensive for 1000 pts. But, good to see people playing w/o the big kits, too.

I was the Eldar player. Here's my list:
3 Scatter Walkers
3 Bright Lance Walkers
7 Warp Spiders
10 Guardians w/ SL
10 Guardians w/ SL
10 Guardians w/ BL
Farseer w/ RoWi
It was pretty effective but the round I whiffed was because a Bloodthirster with 4++ rerollable came around and cleaned up my Guardians unit by unit.
It was a great time and we are looking at running events pretty regularly. The Baraboo store is full of great players and we really strive to create a wonderful community.

You bugger! I didn't know you were on dakka! Welcome to "the beast"!

I think I was more worried about facing you than chaos daemons again, my little one certainly was. All those walkers and spiders would have made a mess of my gun line. Chaos turned out to be horrible in the last game though, multiple Nurgle units (including 2 soul grinders) with shrouded getting 2+ cover saves made most of my shooting completely ineffective. I think I still might have won if that stupid grey hunters squad hadn't failed it's LD test on turn 1. One heck of a game though.

Yellowbeard: I really enjoy the Warp Spiders; they are survivable, quick, and multipurpose. They are good at taking down tough troops, get right to the enemies weak spot, do well against vehicles, and have the best ability for a shooty unit (hit and run). With Battle Focus and Warp Jump Packs they can get to wherever they need to be or chicken away from trouble. I find it hard to play Eldar without them.

Gits: The Eldar foot list was really well designed for a 1000pt game; you pump out so many shots that most armies can't keep up. Battle Focus makes sure you get to objectives/shooting range quickly. Without Heldrakes terrorizing the field I had no reserves about running a foot army; the S8 AP3 large blast Soul Grinders hurt plenty though.

There isn't much yet, just some discussion about Wolves in 6th ed, and in my painting blog I have some airbrushed wolves, I need to get yellow down solidly because it's thinness is leading to streakiness which bugs me >_< (I have your yellow recipe bookmarked, and will try it tonight)

Let the translucence of the yellow work for you. Don't fight it.

I commented on one thread, will have to look for the others. I'd like to add wolves to my list.
