Sorry Dee, nothing yet. I'd consider them definitely overdue by now.

I like the original land raider model (I remember when they were about £10 each!) - yours looks like it's coming along nicely

For all you terrain-heads out there.... BriancJ's terrain building competition! Here's the link to the announcement on his thread: Terrain Contest: Win my stuff!

 Briancj wrote:
Updated Rules, removed references to newbies, clarified suggested bits, adjusted one point category to award points to people whose entries are easy to duplicate.

------------

All right, let's crank this baby up.

WAFL* Contest! Everyone loves waffles, right?

Please spread this around on your plogs. Thanks.

--------------

The prizes:

The ORIGINAL Nuka Cola machine that started the =]L[=.
A giant bag of bits and stuff. Seriously. Epic. Even I don't know what'll be in it. But I'm stripping down my collection to focus on Minotaurs and IG.
Way OOP GW Posters!

The contest theme:

Discarded treasure. I am on a major recycling kick in my life. Recycling, freecyling, upcycling. Reduce and reuse. And it drives me insane when I throw away what should be perfectly good materials!

The rules:

You must create a piece of terrain the size of a CD/DVD. The terrain must utilize leftover modelling supplies. Examples of this are paint pots, plastic sprues, discarded packaging, and leftover plasticard. The debris of completed projects, normally placed into the dustbin. The terrain must be usable in a game of Warhammer 40K, but there are bonus points for making items usable in more than one game system. Multiple terrain pieces ARE allowed, as long as, collectively, they are the size of a CD/DVD. They should also maintain a similar theme (IE: You've taken four 40mm bases and built 4 jungle-themed objective markers). There is no required terrain type, the goal is to show people how to recycle things they would normally throw away into usable game terrain.

While there is no height restriction, consideration for newbie players and/or workability on the battlefield should be kept in mind.

Scoring:

A maximum score of 100 is possible. Ties will be broken by the judges. If the judges are deadlocked, I will call upon readers of this plog to vote. If THAT deadlocks, I'll declare a tie, and divide up the prizes appropriately.

Competition requirements:
These are not cumulative. A few bitz used to enhance the terrain does not count toward percentage, but loading up your entry with bitz (instead of recycled parts) will not score high. Imagine you're a new modeler, and you have a few leftovers from your initial purchases.
Entry is 25% recycled materials or less - 0 points
Entry is around 50% recycled materials - 10 points
Entry is around 75% recycled materials - 25 points
Entry is around 100% recycled materials - 40 points

Modeling:
These points ARE cumulative. A focus on techniques and designs that are easy to copy/emulate will score more points, here. You're helping the masses make terrain. A unique entry might be something that makes the judges go 'ah-ha, that's a GREAT idea'. This is where you can score points for originality of design and making a cool scene or mini-diorama.
Entry is easy for a newbie to duplicate - 10 points
Entry shows a unique idea - 10 points
Entry is visually interesting - 10 points
Entry is usable for more than just Warhammer 40K - 10 points

Painting:
Points are not cumulative. Minimum three colors. Washes and highlights to qualify as well painted, at a minimum. Amazingly well painted is something that wows the judges.
Entry is painted - 10 points
Entry is well painted - 15 points
Entry is amazingly well painted - 20 points

-----------

Weight will be given to people who come up with UNIQUE, creative uses for things most people throw away. Things thrown away: bits of dried putty, paint pots, dried paint, sprues, packaging materials, chopped up plasticard.

You may not use existing terrain or other creations, as with all League competitions, show your work. Deadline for entries is August 8th, 2013. Judging will occur a few days later, over the weekend. There will be no extensions allowed, as this is not a complex 'theme'.

Submit your "WiP" photograph ASAP. With your completed photograph, submit an explanation of what you've built, and what materials you used, as if you were writing a short tutorial.

Gits and Graven have agreed to be my judges.

--B.

@Brian: fixed & updated
@LeadLegion: Glad I could be of service.

So... whoever thought that it would be a good idea to rescue and rebuild/paint old Mk-1 Land Raiders is a complete idiot.

This is taking FOREVER. Work on the left side. No where near done... not even with the basics.

I'm thinking I'm going to do something in the brown metallic range for the tracks... just to spice things up a bit. Too much boltgun metal will get boring (even though it's the most realistic).

I imagine the size is quite daunting but your doing a nice job mate!

Well, it's not the size. It's really a very simple model, minimal detail... rather crude casting (by today's standards)... but it's just taking a ton of time to paint! What's killing me is all the time I've put in so far with seemingly nothing to show for it. Just some minimal metals on a green background.

I hope you guys appreciate that I actually drilled out the smoke launchers... not easy to do as the original plastics are rounded at the tip.

Question:
Anyone have any suggestions as to how to handle that box under the las cannons? I could just leave the box green and paint the "straps", paint it white with a red cross... just make it some complimentary color like red (those little pistons show up so nicely above the door). I'm wide open to ideas.

I think the problem is the large undetailed surface. If it was a modern kit you could do this much work and it'd probably look finished and more importantly you'd be happy. These older kits demand a lot more effort to get the same effects sadly. Your doing all the right things though, bud, don't be disheartened.

As for that box, it just looks like an access panel to me. I'd suggest a little weathering around the edges where paint has chipped off from lots of use. More boltgun sorry! Maybe some black on the straps and details to break it up too.

Yeah, I'm with casey on that one - go for access panel.

Simple model, minimal detail = perfect opportunity for some freehand practise (or decals)

Weren't they supposed to be the un-fired smoke canisters?

Hazard stripes. You know you want to. Raised details then in metal of your choice. And you can still weather it! If full hazard stripes seems a bit too much, maybe you could just do a hazard stripe border

Wait... you mean there are actual "smoke canisters"? Like... grenades??!!!

As to the hazard stripes... I could do that. I'd risk getting blood on the model after I slit my wrists... but I could do that.

The original 'smoke launchers' were not smoke launchers. They were grenade launchers, which could be loaded with ANY of the grenades available at the time. Smoke, frag, rad, anti-plant...

Er I'm done.... there will be a goodly amount of extra decoration... chipping and such... perhaps even mud if I can figure out how to add it without it taking over the piece.
