Subject: Re:Blackadder's attempt to build the BOLS Warlord Titan
It looks badass! But without something next to it for scale he could be standing on a board that is only 2 foot wide and I wouldn't be able to tell. Put 100+ guardsman around his feet and see how the image changes.
Also once he's painted, battle damaged and has his banners mounted it will complete his look.
Looks awesome!! What I wouldn't give for a photo session with it!
To get a more badass looking picture, I'd try getting the camera closer to the ground, and closer to the model. If you have the gear for it, a wide angle shot from the craters would probably make the titan look absolutely huge!
WOOOWW!!!!!! Talk about inspirational..... that was a full hour going back through the history of this build and i am going to send you the cleaning bill because my head literally exploded all over my room!!! Incredible! I thought to begin with that the primed parts were plastic kit parts put together...... but the fact they are actually all card/plastic competely hand made parts puts this on its own level of epicnessness!!
I think wehat some of the other users are saying is correct.... the angles and views you have uploaded would never be a "true view" of this war machine, Viewed bay a heretic Guardsman hiding in his poxy trench and with a wide angled lense would have a massive impart and really push the scale and intimidatyion factor of this beast to a new level IMHO.
Any thoughts on a camo scheme?! COmpletely subbed here.

Thanks for all the replies I appreciate each and every one.
Coldsnap I checked out your gallery and got some good ideas for future photos, I like the snow overlay idea any chance for a source?

dude, it looks boss. Put some models around it to give it a sense of scale! look how badass this imperator looks with everything going to hell around it.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.
Holy crap is that Imperator oversized! D:
Emperor Class titans should be roughly 3ft tall.
The Reaver is roughly 16", making that thing roughly 5 feet to the top?
Though I would love to see an Blackadder do an Emperor class.
The problem with an Imperator is the contempt of smaller titans.
I build a Warhound and it towered above my superheavies rendering them less in significance but the Warhound had a purpose, it was a fast scout. Then I built a Warlord and it towered above the Warhound, the guns were ridiculous in caliber and it dwarfs everything else into insignificance.
Now propose a Lucius Imperator at least a foot taller than the Warlord. Do I really want to diminish my Battle titan?

You'll just have to make an Angry Titan then. Admittedly the scale of this is off (it would be 7-9 feet tall), I'm working on a proper design for a Warlord scale one at the moment.
I always wanted to make a suit of armor to look like a Titan, then go to a tournament, hop up onto a table and stomp my opponents models alas being 6'5" tall. Think I outsize all the regular 40k Titan sizes. But it would be fun to have working nerd gun arms and shoulder cannons

Not to hijack the thread but...
You could always just do the costume for Games Day or some such event.
Spoiler:
You could happily making working weapons using things like the
Air Zone Punisher:
Nerf Vulcan:
Nerf Stampede:
Nerf Swarmfire:
Which are all electric and automated, and I'd be happy to discuss details on how to mod them for it in PM if you like.
Thanks ovion, but I hint the suit is right out for me. I don't even get to play anymore, in a couple years when my kids are older....maybe.

Prior trends are the most indicative of future behaviour. So...... probably.
The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.
It truly looks magnificent. I would imagine part of the disappointment in photos is the loss of detail at this scale. When you spend so much time working on a detail that is 1"x1", standing back and looking a model over two feet tall makes you forget the bits. But the beauty is in the details.
Btw, I'd love to see you go back to Dave Smith's photos on page 1 and try to replicate those shots with your own model. Especially the 4th image from the top, that's some scale right there!
The holo-dome is under reconsideration as I have found a smaller dome that will fit better into the space available.
Regarding the 4th image of the DS Warlord he cheated taking the picture because the right foot is missing. Viewing that image for the first time I was in a quandary as to how I could get the feet to retract with each step.
Well the Warlord is primed and ready for painting and I was curious as to what it would look like on a battle board setting. I have to admit I am not overwhelmed by the view.
Granted the shading and highlighting will enhance the image and a few grunts and tanks for scale will help. Also a better camera angle should display it in a more intimidating stance but considering all the effort; meh...........
BTW the board is 4 ft by 4 ft/ 1.25 meters by 1.25 meters
im sorry but I'm going to have to disagree with you. I think yours is better than the other one. Trust me, if I could make something a tenth as good as this I would have done it!

Lol, you're right! Tbh I never noticed! Nice to see you back!

First of all, I wholeheartedly disagree. This project has been incredible to watch, and a huge insperation. And the result (which isn't even final yet) is absolutely fantastic.
I agree that it will benefit hugely from a few models around the feet giving a sense of scale. But I wonder if the lack of percieved weight to the model is contributing to your lack of satisfaction with the pictures and also hindering the sense of scale.
Have you considered building a base for it? Just for display purposes. (Actually, as I type this, I realise that I might have brought this up once before, talking about a footprint of the cool ad mec symbols on the soles of the feet. Sorry.) I think you should build a base for it, one that you can just stand it in and lift it out of when necessary, and not a very complex one either. If you kept it quite thin and laid some plaster on it or whatever (leaving out two footprints for him), and built that plaster up a bit around his feet, most of the way up his toes, as if he's sinking a little into the ground as he walks. I think this could add a real sense of weight and help add to the sense of size, perspective and scale. You could then add the odd guardsman running around, or wrecked tank or whatever. Make it kinda scenic, just for display, which is where it'll spend most of its time I imagine.
Just a thought. Great work again.
Alan

Actually I have considered a base similar to the Saturn V/Shuttle gantry and platform with various catwalks to the hull and hip areas, elevators and numerous umbilical cables. Perhaps even a maintenance crew towing off a removed foot pad for rework, the 'imagination' boggles at the possibilities would that the 'ambition' match it in initiative.
The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

Sorry to have been so long in responding but it's been a busy month for me getting the kids off to college and visiting my mum in Florida.
I also have been trying to design a Lucius retro-fit for a Mars Reaver which has monopolized a lot of my building time.
But I haven't forgotten this thread and am now acknowledging the above posted request. Unfortunately I have no Russes at hand and my son has none in presentable form and what he does have is 1500 KM away but I hope Baneblades and a Warhound will suffice plus there is a little guy in the foreground for a man sized comparison.
The four models in the first image are the result of about 5 years of scratch building starting with the converted Armourcast Baneblade in the front right. This was my first attempt at working with styrene upgrading the model to conform to the Forge World style Baneblade You can still see the Armourcast treads which I left the same because at the time I deemed to too difficult to manufacture treads and bogie wheels.
The left foreground tank is a total scratch build except for some GW bitz and cast Baneblade treads and bogies. This was my second scratch build and my second favorite tank model.
Lucie the Warhound is my pride and joy and required almost two years to build. She is a total scratchbuild except for the two skulls on the cheeks and the rubber conduits on the neck. Also there are banners on the knee joints and when I remount it there will be a battle banner hanging from the waist.
Lucie is beginning to show a bit of wear and will need some refurbishing soon. She needs more lead weight in the rear to counterbalance the guns and the knee joints need new wooden dowels so she can maintain the poses. Right now she is standing on her own but in what I call her "Cute Puppy" pose.
I have yet to replace the Velcro attachment material with magnets; I hope to be doing that this coming Winter.
Of course the Warlord needs no introduction, I still haven't decided on a colour scheme for 'Luteus Vexant' but he will definitely not have a yellow head even if I choose 'War Griffins as the Chapter colours.
This next photo show comparison between the Warhound and the Thunderhawk although they will probably not be used in the same game. Note Lucie's Battle Banner on the ground............... that needs to be reattached with chain links, glue does hold well .
More images to follow......................

Forgive my rehashing old models but I noticed most of my threads have missing images:
In the following image a view of the top detail of the smaller models. I am particularly proud of the Baneblade's 'Demolisher' cannon which was built of dozens of separate parts and at that time taxed my scratch building abilities to the limit.
Another thing that I was pleased with was the hand made nuts on the front bumpers. I look back at that effort and have to laugh at myself having learned so much since then.
Next we have a low angle view of the Warlord and I notice I still haven't mounted the search lights and flying greave panels. which I had plans to have working lights the wiring can be seen already installed. The white object near the left foot of the Warlord is the catwalk that fits under the carapace
So many things to do still on this model and I have to redesign the Holo- Command deck display.
I hope to have more time this winter.
Here we have a better view of Lucie with her head turned in a quizzical pose demonstrating the flexibility of the neck joint which I hope to duplicate on the Reaver project with a more sophisticated mechanism.
I think what throws the Warlord off for me are the greaves on the lower legs. They are too square lock and blocky for my tastes. If you had made them more similar to the warhound's legs, I think it would look better in my oppinion. Nevertheless, it is quite stunning.
You know I felt the same about the greaves on the DS model initally but when I built the model with truncated greaves it didn't look right. Mebbe I just got use to Mr. Smith's rendering.
BTW I also tried making the greaves longer (taller) and less wide and they still looked wrong. :?:
The square panels are just a facade anyway the armoured greaves proper are visible in the back view of the legs I'll post an image if I can find one.
Automatically Appended Next Post: A nice low angle view of the breast detail of 'Luteus' showing yet another area that needs to be finished; the underside of the waist block
I have to get my a** in gear and get busy on these models
I also have to make trunnion end caps for the laser cannons.
Another view of the relative size of a Warhound (50 feet or 15 meters tall) compared to a Warlord Titan which I scale at (165 feet, 50 meters) and this model is relatively small compared to many other Warlords I've seen on the Internet.
What wonderful pictures Blackadder, thank-you for sharing - your models are a joy to behold, the group shot is simply stunning and jaw droppingly amazing
