This was the biggest suprise to me. I thought it'd be $120, The price is a great surprise and although I don't play either army, got me to order one today. The hellbrute looks cool as do the special characters. I think the cultists look a little bland, but whatever....for the rulebook and the Brute the price is ok and I'll probably end up painting all of it and maybe starting a Chaos army down the line after the codex drops.

Well done GW, best starter set since I've been in the hobby (5 years) and keeping the price low was a brilliant move.

Can anyone comment on "snap-fit plastic models"?

I'm returning to the hobby after few years break and construcing minis without a glue seems a little bit "different"... Has any other set had anything like that in the past?

What I'm afraid of is a situation where due to no-glue building phylosophy we get minis that are difficult to convert or even adjust a little...

They only do this with the starter set's. AOBR was the same way, glue is not necessary but I will be gluing them first thing

No glue just makes it easier for new starters, you literally need nothing esle to at a game so no biggie.

As for converting it will be no harder than any other plastic model. Obviously it will not be in the usual components that a SM or IG model might have so kit bashing becomes a bit harder.

If you read the description of it in the rulebook, they're trying to turn it into a general Imperial fortification. Dark Angels are mentioned as using them during the crusade, but now it's just a general Imperial thing, even the dark angels iconography just being 'images of angels of death'.

I think that they are regretting making such a chapter specific item, especially for a chapter that wasn't as popular, not to say that they will suddenly be popular. The high elves in the Fantasy boxed set hasn't translated into loads of high elf players although skaven have become much more popular than they were. As it is I suspect that the scenery bods have been trying out new techniques with the Fantasy terrain and we'll start to see more 40k terrain soon. I'd like to see an expansion around terrain like the fulcrums in Storm of Magic but not as extreme.

OK so I haven't read through every page of this thread so apologies if I'm repeating stuff. But this set looks great. At last chaos space marines that really look the business and that chaos lord....awesome. I don't really need any of this stuff but the models have got me really tempted. And also, at last some non FW chaos cultists. I may have a few beers tonight, think 'what the hell' and order it! Hopefully this is the beginning of the new CSM range that everybody's been banging on about for so long.

The Hellbrute model gives me hope for the other daemon engines that are supposed to be coming out with the new 'Dex.

I just hope the starter kit model is typical of the range and just just a one-off, coz it looks awesome!

Excellent, excellent. Have my pre-order ready, hopefully will be getting a trade arranged shortly and my Venerable Dreadnought and Dark Angels upgrade sprue came the other day, so I have five DA veterans, a custom Belial and of course aforementioned Venerable Dreadnought. Add two sets of the starter set and that's a pretty decent Sphess Mehreen force.

Thanks you captain obvious.

The point was for NEW terrain pieces to be included regardless of what they are. We have a fortress, a bastion and a defrense line kit currently, but no true bunker (similar to the bottom/base of the bastion witout the tower segment, etc.)

Made a review of what I thought of the models at first site on the Penthouse. Hope you enjoy.

ILikeTrains wrote:OK, here we go. I've advance ordered the Limited Edition of Dark Vengeance, and just wanted to share my thoughts on some of the models.

First of all:

DARK ANGELS

Interrogator-Chaplain

Badass to the extreme. Brilliant pose, imposing features, grimdark. Almost perfect in every way, only problem is the exceptionally Chaos-y incense burners on his back pack. I would have prefered something more like exhausts, perhaps? Plus, Limited Edition, so...

Company Master

Again, pretty nice, although it seems to be a rip of the current Finecast Dark Angels Company Master, down to the sword. Not necessarily bad though, just a bit too static. Loving the Combi-Plasma though, really sticks to the theme and makes it a ton easier to get one into your army.

Librarian

OK, this guy is disappointing. He's moving very slowly, lacks the ostentatious aura of the other characters, and looks rather stupid, particularly with the completely upright grip of the sword. Really is quite disappointing with the standards of other models in the set.

Deathwing Terminators

Just plain embarrassing. Really. The sculpts of the 2 normal guys are the same, the Assault Cannon holds one of the most ridiculous poses I have seen, equivalent to some of the 2nd and 3rd Ed sculpts. The wings on the back of the Sergeant look plain derpy, and the pose doesn't lend itself to intelligence either. The chainfist is really the only decent model. This is a real shame, as I am an avid Deathwing player.

Tactical Squad

I really do like these over the horrible, monopose AoBR models. Really. Dynamic poses aplenty, but some sculpts are redone. Still, It's another easy way to get a Plasma Cannon into your squad, and the sergeant does look like a leader, with good posing involved. Looking forward to these.

Ravenwing Bikers

Awesomesauce. Individual models, good poses, plenty of detail. One complaint would be the way the sergeant holds his sword, but that's really quite petty.

CHAOS

Chaos Lord

Absolutely stunning. This mini is at the quality that you would expect from regular blisters, and would do incredibly well as one. Everything about it, from the detail to the pose to the weapons is absolutely brilliant. This bodes well for the rest of the Chaos range.

Chosen

Just as amazing as the Lord. there's one repeated sculpt, sure, but that doesn't matter. These are dynamic, detailed and best of all, not just spiky skull marines. They've really managed to get the sense of Chaos with these.

Hellbrute

Again, amazing. The pose is good, it's detailed. My one gripe is the bare head in the middle of the torso, as it just looks out of place. Spiky, yes, but it isn't mindlessly so, and it is amazing.

Cultists

2 squads of Cultists. Very, very nice. Not ridiculous people in skirts or anything, these are ready to fight a war and win. Of course, there are repeated sculpts, but thanks to the individuality of the models you can paint them distinguishably. I also like the fact that GW has given some thought to weapons. These do uphold the high standard of the rest of the Chaos models very well.

re terrain - they could have included something to repressent the hellfire stone (the central objective to the whole box set).
Wouldn't have to be that big either.
Will have to make one from scratch, something like this but without the elf on top -

Now, I have read quite a bit of this thread but won't be reading it all......GW is stating there are a limited number of these boxes but that this is special edition, is there going to be a non-special edition version of this box?

I assume so, as it's called Limited Edition at this point. That would be a blunder, even by GW standards.

Yes, I cannot find mention of the unlimited box in there after reading it twice, perhaps I missed it but prices aren't mentioned there either, only the fact that they don't know the price as of yet.

(Which btw is 107 USD as mentioned a few times on the previous page)

I wish GW listed how many they had left on their website......

My LGS told me when the LE runs out it will be replaced by the standard edition at the same price. But then we do pay twice as much as the rest of the world down here so maybe they decided to give us a "free" mini with our LE??

We spent an entire page discussing the standard edition. It'll be released the week after the LE is(so, Sept. 8th) and will be $99 USD.

I would completely disagree there... Personally, I think this guy is right up there with the current Terminator Librarian and Njall as one of the best Librarian models GW has ever produced. He's badass.

I really do like these over the horrible, monopose AoBR models.

Which is interesting, given that they're all in pretty much the same poses... The only difference is that the plasma cannon guy and the beakies have their heads turned sideways. Which admittedly does break it up a bit visually, but there's really not that great a disconnect between these and the AoBR guys.

Again, amazing. The pose is good, it's detailed. My one gripe is the bare head in the middle of the torso, as it just looks out of place. Spiky, yes, but it isn't mindlessly so, and it is amazing.

Given what a Dreadnought is supposed to be, and that this guy is essentially just a slightly more psycho chaotic dreadnought, I think the head works. Although I do have an idea or two to tinker with it a little...
