actually i really like wood... almost all my furniture is unpainted and un sealed pine wood... i love the look of IKEA furniture it has all these nice looking knotholes and such things...

wooden´t it be good to have an all wooden hut? whut aka wo(oden)hut

and well i know where you are coming from with ading a metal roof to the hut... i grant you it could be looking a bit too similar... walls and roof all alike... but i take it you would come up with a different look for the roof compared too walls... also... you could do two roofs

i wood like to see that

Are you going to coat the cardboard in something like watered pva glue? It might reinforce it a little and make it look more like corrugated iron and less like cardboard.

Although presumably your already on step a head of me...

That comp. you guys are in is amazing, and producing some amazing work, but I am sorry this is the star of the show. The effort to make what you have is staggering, and it looks absolutely brilliant. This shows what scratch building is really about, making something WAY better than you could buy, from stuff others through out.

Two steps, technically... it was coated with PVA...

Anyway, I am thinking about alternatives:
Can't do typical straw thatch, as the roof isn't angled enough.

I've tried to shave twigs out of sprue for a twig-like thatch, but that didn't really work.

I could do more planks, but is that too similar to the walls / not be original enough?

I could do slate/shingles from card, but they wouldn't be very textured.

I could do a overgrown/lawn/plant/garden -type roof from the shaving of the planks (I'm going to be using some of these for plant life about the hut anyway, but have enough to cover a partially collapsed roof).

Any thoughts or ideas from out there?

I think that the corrugated iron roof is the best choice for this kind of Hut, if not You could use a few planks like the walls, some corrugated metal, some kind of foliage/straw and some pieces of scrap metal all at once in very ORKY style

Not where I should be

Only thing I can think of against a corrugated roof is that it fixes it in modern/future. Can't really use it for fantasy. Or am I wrong? i'm not sure.

I'm trying to keep the hut as universal as possible (game-wise, I can't think of a tabletop game that you couldn't use a wooden hut in) as per the competition rules. Hence no high-tech or futuristic materials in the hut.

Also trying to limit myself to scrap modelling materials where possible (and almost exclusively sprue). But an exception for the roof may have to be made.

Animal skin is a good idea... although what I could make it out of...hmm...
Card, with shavings stuck on and cut short to look like fur...

I was assuming that as Fantasy had metal weapons and armour, that corrugated metal sheets would be possible... but I don't know....

you could always use tissue as a means to make a big clothed roof...

or even a board covered roof... but even me thinks that this might be too many boards...

maybe the currogated roof is not that bad as an idea after al... but if you do this... try to make overlapping pieces of the metal... thus it looks more ramshakle...

You are right, I am probably off wack. Nothing wrong with corrugated.

BTW torn masking tape makes for effective cloth/hide looking material and with a coat of PVA is quite durable, I use it for my banners all the time.

Spoiler:

If layered up It looks really effective.

Ramshackle is the word.

I had a rummage, a minor panic when I couldn't find what I was looking for, another rummage and I've found:
One square of (on this scale, quite thick) woollen material that came with a hat a bought. It's not quite as big as the roof and, as I said, 4mm thick.
AND
One square of foam-backed leather-ish material, just like that I used for the Wave Serpent and ... AND, It's massive (relatively). I could cut an animal skin shape out of it easy then string it up stretched to the roof piece and give it a paint....

What do we think to that?

Also Kleenex type Tissues make a lovely canvas texture when soaked in a 50:50 PVA water mix. also they dry VERY hard.

Thanks Theo. That sounds tricky to do. Good idea though.

Ahh, metal patchwork. That's relatively simple, re-adds the metal to add variation to texture, replaces the rivets that were lost with the corrugated steel and can be made with scrap modelling material... I'll give that a go first and see how it looks. Ta muchly Dave.

Oh yeah, there will be rivets. Once I've got the arrangement right with those sheets (some aren't sitting flat enough).

But are these sheets big enough or too big?
They all are about the right size to sit across from one beam to another in the roof frame, so technically are the correct size, but do they "look" right?

Not where I should be

They are looking great, the only thing I would say is to randomise the size a bit more, maybe like you say some a bit smaller. Also (totally a personal suggestion) I usually make one or two look like they are panels from enemy vehicles. So not always just flat sheets. A couple small strips of card running across a panel makes it look like a piece from a Rhino.

Like I say though it looks good as is.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh also maybe mostly metal panels with a panel of hide here or there.

Get to it Casey.

Cool. Good suggestions Cam.
I've rearranged them to sit better and glued them together. They are slightly differing in shape and size (the rear right one is much smaller, but yeah, maybe a little too regular).

I can definitely add more details to them, Nothing too recognisable though to keep it available for any game system's look, but a raised edge here, a something there... I'll look into it. Also one of the pieces had an embossed "7" that I thought I'd turn into a feature.

Also added some rust damage to the broken corner and some examples of riveting (these aren't stuck down yet, I'll do the detailing before I do that). The exposed wood of the roof will receive some damage as well, it won't stay like that.
