Well, if the cover invokes a "ewww amateurish 80s design" reaction among many viewers, maybe something went wrong. At least designing the front page didn't take longer than 3 minutes

Anyone who got problems with the 80s is to leave this thread immediately!

I really like the look. Yes, it does look vintage-ish but I, personally, really like it. Looks like a more "serious" design, maybe less flashy. The price increase was to be expected and we all know that it still is about 2€ too expensive (appropriate price would be ~6€), but hey, it's GW. We already buy little plastic soldiers worth hundreds of dollars.

The new cover reminds me of the old days of 2nd edition D&D books, and the really old issues of Dragon magazine, and similar publications to that. Brings back some good memories of my youth.

Doesn't the paper look a bit odd? If you look at the dragon pic you can see these vertical "waves" on the paper to me that seens to indicate that the paper is too thin for the moist of the ink.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

As to the cover of the magazine... it looks like someone lost the CD key to the proper design software and had to knock something up with MS Publisher...

I agree. Cramming a bucket full of square letters on the front page is not state-of-the-art design. Would look like a cheap fake, if we didn't know better. Getting rid of the trademark White Dwarf logo for that?

Judging from the pics, it seems the White Dwarf indeed got smaller. Hope there is more in it than just the advertising pics shown.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Dunno what WM models you've been looking at....

The Forgefiend/Maulerfiend bears a slight resemblance to Scaverous but that's it. As already said, they look more like Zoids than anything else.

I actually quite like the cover, reminds me of the old one's from the 80s! But, to be honest, it could have a picture of Sly Stallone's mum on the cover for all I care, it's the content that counts.

As for those new Chaos units? Well, I think the pretence that some of these new releases are anything other than toys has long since gone out of the window.

Just caught a glimpse of those pic's, now all I can think about is the robot thingys from the terrible old original Power Rangers show!
Can't say I'm eager to buy one, which is a shame because the Chaos guys in Dark Vengeance almost made me start a Chaos army.

The magazine... merh I didn't buy it before, and don't plan to buy it now. The reason was not the aesthetic, or even its poor content, but the extortionate price for an obsolete medium. And somehow making the price even more obscene as the medium becomes even more outdated is supposed to save the magazine? Not sure I really understand the logic. As a scientist and an artist I feel that the use of paper for things like magazines and newspapers is a little bit irresponsible when access to the internet is so rife that the vast majority have pocket sized devices for getting onto it let alone home pc's, laptops and tablet computers designed (rather well) to all but replace the conventional paper book.

They did try to enter the modern era at GW with the digital book releases, but they did that in a rather stupid way too; by having exclusivity to Apple iPad and the Apple book store vastly limiting their potential market and are probably now stuck in a contract with Apple, and we know what theyre like for sueing everyone lately!

The Warp Smith is awesome, though the rest of them can suck it as far as being used in a Chaos force as far as im concerned. Those forge fiends may get kit bashed in to new Talos variants though...

As for the cover of the mag, I remember writing in to GW and saying take it back to how it was in the old days. I meant content wise, though they seem to have thought I meant on the cover layout too (I really like[d?] the recent covers personally). Time will tell if the contents improved.

Personally, I think the cover is awful. Regardless of what they were actually going for, the cover looks like an old pulp sci-fi novel, although some of that might be the ridiculous model on the front cover.

Agreed. When I first saw the leaked cover I literally thought it was a troll and that someone had uploaded a picture of a second edition White Dwarf.

So... They just changed the layout of the front cover, as well as the logo? That better not be the sum total of this "overhaul". Of course, given what White Dwarf has been over the last few years, the only direction they can really go is up.

"I have concluded through careful empirical analysis and much thought that somebody is looking out for me, keeping track of what I think about things, forgiving me when I do less than I ought, giving me strength to shoot for more than I think I am capable of. I believe they know everything that I do and think, and they still love me. And I’ve concluded, after careful consideration, that this person keeping score is me." -Adam Savage

Mmmm.......I'm not exactly sure what to think about the new WD. Part of me is kinda sad that they did away with the old logo - it was iconic, and would have been a good link between old and new. However part of me actually quite likes it - it looks clean & simple and is easy on the eye.

Still content is more important, and I hope there is going to be a lot more to it than a bunch of photos with a small block of text in the middle.

I had pretty much convinced myself to but this, but now - I think I'll definitely have to 'try before I buy'.

Can't really judge a magazine by its cover. That said, I think the cover looks fine... ok, well, the cover looks terrible, but only because the main focus of the cover (the horrific Maulerfiend) is a terrible design. The actual WD cover (ignoring the picture) is fine.

Now if only they'd used the first cover of new WD to display something iconic like... I dunno... the White Dwarf rather than that... that... thing!!!

I like the cover. I like the throwback styling, and it looks a little more like a magazine for grownups. It also harkens back to the glory days of a better WD.

Wow. Drastic change on the front cover and it would appear the layout inside. I like what I see. In recent months WD has been especially bad This month is just ad's pretty much.

I will wait with baited breath for this to drop on the doormat this Saturday.

Hope so, but not sure - I know it's on sale at games day, but does that mean it's also in the shops? I hope it's not just some preview thing where you can go look at it, but not buy it.

WD is for sale on Saturday.

At least in GW stores anyway.... not sure about elsewhere but one would assume so.

I like the cover well enough. In any event, I'm not going to get terribly worked up about the design on a single image. I just want White Dwarf to recover some of the life, the fun, the depth, the content and conjurations it used to have. If the insides merit, I'll happily buy the thing.

The WD is one centimeter shorter than the old one, but new editing results in less content per page, although looking better. Example: Showing the new stuff this month takes 50 pages. They also use 10 pages to list all the worlds GW stores and Indies with address. Some content is cool, pics are better designed, but still mostly advertising.

This is a first impression, will tell you more in the evening.

Oh, and the cover is indeed a (modified?) photo of a model.
And there will be a digital version in the app-store (ipad only as usual).

I'll take a look in my local Tesco as they carry WD. I'm not going to buy a copy unless when I flick through they have vouchers for 100 free models or something equally good

Though I may, once I have formulated my views on the new magazine and content, go into my local GW and have a chat with the staffer about it

I take it you have a copy. A review would be most welcome, particularly regarding content. Are we still talking pages and pages of photos of the new minis? Is the new Codex discussed in any great detail? Any decent painting / modelling tutorials? Do non Eavy Metal painted armies feature and are they discussed?
