Hey guys, as I mentioned earlier, I won't be able to participate this month and maybe next month neither. But I'm following the threat all the way.
My concern this month is that nearly nobody sticks to the theme. I know it's an interpretation thing and you can bend the theme a bit but I was hoping to see some more minis that stick to the topic of this month. Until now the Frankendread seems to be the top of the mountain to me.

I don't want annoy anybody with this.

Good luck to everyone

I think the thing is, if you don't have a Halloween mini, not everyone can go out and get one in time, on top of army painting.
I struggled but figured magicians fit the "trick" half.

Most of my horror figures are werewolves, which would kinda be a bit samey as the other horror entry.

'magician' is a classics Halloween costume - reckon you're on pretty safe theme ground there BC

If I get time, I'd love to expand it out to a proper magic shop display, I have a little store by Sarissa Precision that I've been looking to do something with. Problem is this month is packed with people needing me to do things.

Regarding the theme, with something as open as this I'm not going to be telling people yay or nay to any great extent; as mentioned (I think by BC) the interpretation of the theme is a large part of what people vote on, so in theory the more fitting minis should be rewarded there.

I sometimes wonder with the theme though, how many people vote for what they'd like and think would be cool to see but then don't enter? This theme was a pretty clear winner in the poll, but particularly for anyone painting towards an army (unless it happens to be Undead or Harlequins) there's not a great deal they're going to have that fits in perfectly, hence why I'm not going to be disallowing anything. Obviously some stuff will be more fitting to the theme than other bits, but at the end of the day so long as people are painting minis and having fun then I'm not complaining!

Finally, I'd add that while the theme is Halloween-inspired, there's obviously scope to go beyond that, hence the pretty open descriptions in the OP. So there's no need to panic that your mini isn't something you'd see as a halloween costume, so long as it fits broadly into one aspect or another of the theme!

My minis have shipped, so I should be able (time permitting, things are still a tad hectic) to start working on Mister J some time this weekend.

You could do a weighted vote, but it's complex. If folk who've taken part in the previous context post what they voted for, you could take that as 1.5 or two votes.
I've noticed before that we get more votes for a theme than entrants by a long mile, and sometimes folk struggled to think of a mini. I guess it's never going to be a foolproof system. It's all for fun in the end.

Yeah, that's been considered in the past (as has a voting multiplier come the end of the month for the entries a judging panel deemed not very/moderately/very fitting), but in the end it was just more complicated than necessary and just meant there was even more adminy stuff to do rather than painting minis!

But yeah, this is all just an excuse to paint stuff, no need for anyone to take it overly seriously!

I feel like I should say something given the current discussion.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Not the candy but the happy/spooky nature of it. Fun mixed with scary, the imagery, the old 1930's and 40's classic horror films all mixed in with fall (my favorite season). I've long wanted to do a Halloween themed miniature to celebrate my love of the day be never was able to come up with a good idea. The idea for Frankendread was serendipitous.... a lucky confluence of needing to paint that particular dread, the fact that the only arms I had for it were two actual arms, the timing (October) and the additional fact that I'd just watched the Boris Karloff version of Frankenstein on TV.

The point I'm getting at is that coming up with good build that fits the theme, fits into one of your own armies (if you're a player as opposed to a collector) and come at a time when you have the time, energy and creativity to dedicate to the project is difficult at best. It's one of the reasons I enter so few competitions. I have enough to paint without them. I think Paradigm is adopting a wise course of action. Give people the flexibility to come up with something really creative and thematic but don't limit your participants with strict regulations over what is allowable. You set the theme, let people interpret it as they will. You might be pleasantly surprised at the end result.

Have an exalt.

I'm not repeating what others have more eloquently said. But I urge that people use the competition thread to inspire. Some entries have been wildly off topic in the past, but those that have sat down and thought about the theme have produced some brilliant entries that fit their main modelling goals and the theme. Gitsplitta epitomises this with the Frankendread. I'm not sure people's views on my Balrog, but life events fitted around October and that model so it seemed perfect..... and it's a honking great big monster for Halloween, however there's no pumpkin so I will appreciate any criticism on that point. I'm rambling. Point is - the themes aren't rigid, but trying to incorporate them can yield some awesome results.

Shutting up now. Sorry.

Yeah, no wood in there, ghost ship is ghost.
Its a relic from the (unreleased) episodes of "MTV, pimp my my boat"

"yo, I heard you like ghosts, so we put some ghosts into your ghost ship so you can ghost while you ghost ship"

Other never published episodes included "yo, I heard you like Sigmar...", "yo, I heard you like octopuses...", "yo, I heard you like fishes, and tridents, and skeletal fishes with tridents...", "yo, I heard you like zeppelin airports" and "yo, I heard you like half-zombified abyssal abominations..."

Of course!

They are the ghosts of the people who tried to pirate GW's IP and got caught by GW's legal department!

Dreadfleet was all about pirates. And being a scam. A very cool looking sea mat, but the contents weren't worth the price.
