This release is looking pretty amazing. People are finally getting the customization they have been wanting for what feels like 10 years.
I'm hoping this means that an updated CSM codex is eminent, since all of these released build on it.

Do the CSM get a formation where they get 600+ free points in vehicles on top of their army?
Because considering the current power creep, unless all those combat drugs, icons, special weapons and abilities and so on are free, they won't make the CSM competitive.

So can undivided legions even take a daemon prince, considering they have to be upgraded. It says no marks allowed, but they don't have a mark, they are called a "daemon of x" - x being the 4 gods.

Summon 2 units of pink horrors with your top tier psychic abilities(Specifically psychic, the Cabal is nuts.) and with the new split rule you have just as many free points as most battle companies get.

Veteranoob , said that the "Daemon Engine" auxiliary was Black Legion only. Is it the same for the Spawn auxiliary as well? It's a shame that the other legions didn't get "Legion Armory" like the TS.
I'm stuck for an AUX option as outside of the Terminator Annihilation force standing in for "Lustwing" none of them really fits Emperor's Children. To bad the Kakophoni can't be taken as an Aux with a Chaos Warband as your core. I suppose I could just take the Cult of Destruction and keep proxying my Sonic Terminators for the Obliterators. Since EC Terminators didn't get sonic weapons this time around.

First thing that came to mind about the WE relic.
Odd that people think EC is the best overall, doesn't seem that good considering the cost of Noisemarines and Sonic Weapons not being that good for their points really.
To me Alpha Legion is the absolute clear winner for competitive play.

Overall, this is exactly what I expected. A supplement to an inadequate book. It's goes a long way to what people (myself included) wanted to see, with a few questionable choices like keeping the Black Legion VotLW-only (what??) and not letting the Alpha Legion use loyalist units...
Definitely worth buying if you already have a Traitor Legion warband, but nothing here as exciting as Wrath of Magnus to get me interested in starting any of them as opposed to Thousand Sons.
In a perfect world, we'd see all kinds of new and unique units for the traitor legions, but I am so glad that I can finally complain about not having enough now, finally, after complaining for so long about having nothing at all.
This is a good thing.
Oh, and by the way, I'm talking purely from a rules standpoint here. Pretty much all of the infantry in CSM range (Thousand Sons & Raptors aside) still need multi-part plastic kits. So many of them, in fact, that it's still a hopeless prospect

going to be very disappointed if Plague Hive can only be taken with Typhus, I dislike using SCs and GW's continued focus on them is irritating
on the other hand, they've ditched the ancient restriction on Death Guard having Heavy Weapons finally!

Better to not add to the power creep than to let it get more entrenched. Free stuff in formations, Skyhammer Annihilation Force, Eldar buffs upon buffs, all of these should be toned down or removed, not expanded on.
Quarterdime wrote:Pretty much all of the infantry in CSM range (Thousand Sons & Raptors aside) still need multi-part plastic kits. So many of them, in fact, that it's still a hopeless prospect
This part is wishlisting, but with the pattern of smaller "subfaction" releases combined with the addition of (Chaos) Primarchs, we could see a lot more updates based on various themed forces. Abbadon hopefully will come with plastic Chosen (and maybe updated terminators). Pertuabo would easily anchor a wave of say Havocs, Mutilators/Obliterators, plastic Warpsmith, and maybe some daemonic Artillery. Fulgrim with Noise Marines and say a proper chaos knight kit. Alpha Legion would be a good force to update basic PA CSM, and give cultists a proper multipart kit like GSC have now. Curze is dead, and Raptors already have a lovely kit, so maybe Night Lords could anchor new bikes and a flying transport or other non-heldrake flier.

Nevermind what I said above, AL has the best rules but is impaired by the terribad Chaos Warband. EC might be the winner, or perhaps NL since their Core is Raptor Talon.
You could spam Raptor units, with Spawn, and just add an RK for some MSU+Knight build.

Sorry if this is obvious, but im not sure i understand correctly what gains you what benefit exactly.. So if i have an army consisting of a CAD and a formation detachment, i can say that both of them are death guard, if i go by the restrictions, and so both detachments get FnP, relentless, etc on votlw units, pms as troops in the cad etc.. Then the one detachment my Warlord is in (=my primary detachment), whatever that detachment might be nets me the reroll on 1s on FnP and the >18" stealth, the other detachment doesnt..
Is this right? Or do i only get the extra benefits if my primary detachment is the decurion?

From a hobby standpoint, this is actually a nightmare. Outside of the following Legions:
-Thousand Sons
-Night Lords
-World Eaters (with Forgeworld conversions)
-Death Guard (with Forgeworld conversions)
And that's it. The rest have to deal with the worst, most bland and unimpressive plastic and resin kits that Games Workshop has to offer. I would not want to be someone who is in love with one of those other legions right now, because the hobby aspect of this is going to be a complete P.I.T.A. for them. (I'm talking infantry here, by the way.)

Thanks!
In this case, is there any point in taking the plague colony over the warband? The way i see it, the plague colony benefit is rather meh ( i primarily play against shooty blue faced armies), and the only way i can get bikes and havocs with the reroll FnP (not to mention the added +1 cover to jinking bikes) is through the warband, with the (former) tax of the csm units, which however are now almost on par with Pms, barring the superior equipment. I mean, my heart bleeds if i had to use csm with mon instead of the og death guard guys, but i dont really see why they would be worth it.

a lot of the questions were eyebrow raising. Like the one asking if only one spawned BH needed to be where the PH was, and if the rest could be clear across the table.

If those cultists came with the options the Genestealer kit came with, they'd actually be good at £25.
10 autoguns, 10 shotguns, one each of the special weapons and mining weapons, 20 heads, plenty of stuff left over for kitbashing/converting. Rather something like that than a bunch of identical monopose models, imo.

Sounds like a nice release. This is probably the best thing CSM could wish for within the godawful framework of detachments and formations that is GW's current fetish. It definitely seems like the book was done by someone who understands and loves Chaos, they were just constrained by the bad system.
