SO, the new Chaos Helldex was released, and one day later we decided to give it a good test run with a 2500pt hellgame. Panic's HellPlague Marines vs my Slaanesh HellCSM and HellDaemon allies. After two hours or so attempting to build a list using pencils and paper (faster, Battlescribe, faster!!), we got hellstarted. As always, hellpics by Panic, hellwords by me.

Panic's Plague Marines - 2500pts

* Lord - Power Weapon, Mark Of Nurgle, Gift of Mutation (Unworthy)
* Daemon Prince - Wings, Power Armour, Mark Of Nurgle, Black Mace, Mastery Level 1 (Nurgles Rot), Gift of Mutation (Crusader).
* 7 Plague Marines - PowerFist, Plasma x 2, Rhino with havoc launcher
* 7 Plague Marines - PowerFist, Melta x 2
* 7 Plague Marines - PowerSword, Plasma x 2
* Hellbrute - Plasma Cannon
* Hellbrute - Plasma Cannon
* 7 Possessed - Mark Of Nurgle, Champion has 2 Gifts of Mutation (Poisoned 4+, Gun Morph)
* 7 Raptors - Mark Of Nurgle
* 3 Spawn
* 3 Obliterators - Mark Of Nurgle
* 3 Obliterators - Mark Of Nurgle
* 3 Obliterators - Mark Of Nurgle

ArbitorIan's Slaaneshi CSM - 2500pts

* Chaos Lord - Mark of Slaanesh, Terminator Armour
* Chaos Sorcerer - Mark of Slaanesh, Mastery Level 2 (Psychic Shriek, Hysterical Frenzy)
* 3 Chaos Terminators - Mark of Slaanesh, Icon of Excess, Lightning Claw, Champion with a Chainfist
* 6 Possessed - Mark of Slaanesh, Champion with Gift of Mutation (Poisoned 2+)
* Hellbrute - Plasma Cannon
* 6 Noise Marines - 5 Sonic Blasters, Champion with Lightning Claw, Doom Siren, Gift of Mutation (Crusader) in a Rhino (Dirge Caster)
* 6 Noise Marines - 5 Sonic Blasters
* 12 Chaos Marines - Mark of Slaanesh, Icon of Excess, Champion with a Lightning Claw
* 6 Warp Talons - Champion with a Gift of Mutation (+1BS)
* 3 Obliterators - Mark of Slaanesh
* Chaos Predator - Heavy Bolters, TL Lascannon

* Keeper of Secrets - Soporific Musk, Unholy Might
* 6 Fiends of Slaanesh
* 18 Daemonettes

Mission & Deployment

We played Purge the Alien with Hammer & Anvil deployment, and set up the terrain narratively, as a bombed highway. After rolling for Psychics and Gifts (in the army lists - not all that useful) and Warlord traits (completely useless), Slaanesh won the roll for deployment. They set up in a huge, open line, ready to run into cover on their first turn, with the Warp Talons, Terminators and all the Daemons in reserve, and the Sorcerer taking cover in the large Chaos Marine squad.

Nurgle the set up in another line 24" away, with two squads of Obliterators on the tall building and one more squad, the Raptors and the DP in reserve.

With the battle lines all set up for a game of running and screaming at each other, Nurgle managed to Steal the Initiative!

Nurgle Turn 1

The line starts moving, most units moving forward and the Rhino moving at cruising. The obliterators avoid the FNP Chaos Marines to fire at the Possessed but cover and bad scatters mean that only two are killed.

And at the end of the turn not much has changed - the armies have started the running and screaming but only two Possessed have died. The Slaanesh Helbrute has suffered a weapon destroyed from some Obliterators, losing his plasma cannon before he gets a chance to fire it.

Slaanesh Turn 1

The Slaanesh Daemons get their chosen half, the Keeper and the Fiends arriving near the garden. The line then moves forward, the Helbrute going crazy for some close combat action because of his Shake last turn, everyone attempting to get in to long assault range. The Obliterators try to get an easy First Blood point from the Rhino, but only shake it.

Although the Noise Marines moving into the ruins manage to take a wound from a Spawn, all the charges fail.

Nurgle Turn 2

All of the Nurgle reinforcements arrive at once - the Raptors jumping in behind the Slaanesh Obliterators, the Nurgle Oblits arriving by the roadside, and the Daemon Prince swooping on from the board edge (we didn't realise that FMC actually DO get deep strike!)

The line moves forwards (probably screaming) and the Chaos Lord and Plague Marines dismount the Rhino. Everything opens fire on the large CSM squad, killing seven. The Obliterators, arriving near the road, fire assault cannons at the Keeper of Secrets, killing it in one turn before it does anything!

The Spawn then zoom through cover to attack the Possessed, taking a couple of wounds but killing all but the champion. The now empty Rhino pops smoke, and the Obliterators on the building cause more wounds on the big CSM squad, killing the Sorcerer.

Nurgle have a made a good dent on the Slaanesh forces.

Slaanesh Turn 2

The Terminators arrive centrefield, but the Warp Talons scatter and mishap, going into ongoing reserves. A Noise Marine squad dismount from their rhino and line up to fire doom sirens and sonic blasters at the plague marines, but only manage to kill one. Likewise, the Predator turns and reverses to attack the Raptors, but only kills one!

The Noise Marines in the building and the Obliterators do better, between them wiping out a full squad of advancing Plague Marines.

And then the big charge starts, the Helbrute and the remains of the CSM assaulting the Chaos Lord and Noise Marines, but the Nurgle side wins, losing a few Plague Marines but killing all but two of the CSM and destroying the Hellbrute. The last two CSM fall back.

The Fiends charge the roadside Obliterators, easily killing them all.

On the other side of the table, the Spawn finish off the Possessed and advance on the Noise Marines in the building

A bloody turn - Nurgle advance as Slaanesh units are starting to look pretty thin on the ground....

Nurgle Turn 3

The Daemon Prince swoops into position, and the Possessed running through the woods change direction now the Keeper has been killed. They disturb a Razorwing Nest in the gardens, but it doesn't hurt them. The central Plague Marine squad and both Helbrutes open fire with plasma at the Terminators and Lord, killing all of them!

The Raptors in the Slaanesh deployment zone charge the Obliterators, but only kill one, while the Oblits kill so many in return, the Raptors fail their morale check and start to fall back.

Small arms fire kills the odd Noise Marine and Plague Marine and the Spawn are still locked in combat with the Noise Marines in the ruins.

Slaanesh Turn 3

The Slaanesh reserves all arrive, both the Daemonettes and the Warp Talons arriving in the Slaanesh deployment area.

Slaanesh targets for easy kill points, the Obliterators exploding a Hellbrute and the Predator exploding the Rhino. The Fiends advance on the Lord's squad, and the unengaged Noise Marines turn around and fire on the fleeing Raptors, killing them all.

The Fiends charge, killing all but the champion and reducing the Lord to one wound. The Spawn in the ruins finish off a Noise Marine squad at the cost of one Spawn and advance to the next.

Slaanesh now has a lot more reinforcements around but it might be too late.

Nurgle Turn 4

The Daemon Prince finally lands to join in the Fiend/Lord combat.

Massed plasma accounts for a few Daemonettes, two Noise Marines and a Rhino.

And in combat, the Lord kills two Fiends, the rest of the unit killing the Lord and champion and then hit&running away before the end of the phase, when the Black Mace comes into effect!

The Spawn then charge the last Noise Marines, only killing one, as the Daemon Prince consolidates into cover behind a nearby Helbrute

Slaanesh Turn 4

The Fiends and Warp Talons charge an advancing squad of Plague Marines, their champions duelling, but the combat ends in a draw. The Daemonettes fare better, overwhelming the Spawn and consolidating back.

Obliterator fire takes out the last Hellbrute

Turn 5

And turn five becomes a game of mopping up, the Daemon Prince moving to behind the Fiend/WarpTalon/PM combat so he can charge into the fiends.

He kills them while the rest of the combat grinds away to no conclusion.

And at the end of the game, Nurgle take the victory, having dominated the game!

Go Nurgle!

Looking at the lists, I'm not surprised at the outcome. Neither are particularly competitive, but the Nurgle one is strongest.

Both nicely painted and well reported!

Woah! Has the interwebs already worked out what counts as a competitive list for this codex!?

I think that the way the game went was more to do with the mission. The mission was decided after picking lists and a kill point mission never really suited the slaanesh side, they had multiple small units, I had less units that was tougher to kill... It also didn't help that I stole the inititive and rolled amazingly for my PM FNP.

For this game I primarily choose units that I have had for ages but never normally used, especially units that could now use Marks Of Nurgle but could not in the previous codex.
7plagueRaptors and 7 plaguePossessed. 3 full squads PlagueSlugObliterators plus 3 squads of Plague Marines..
While It's really fluffy the list actually looks pretty competitive to me.

Chaos Legionnaire wrote:...

yep!
For me the surprise unit of the game was the 3 Spawn, they were rubbish in the last codex.
They are now 10pts cheaper per spawn, plus they are no longer mindless, plus every turn they get a random bonus and because they're beasts they now move 12" per turn ignoring cover!
For their first charge they scored A random attack roll of 5 (my random spower was roll two D6 and choose the highest) plus the rage+2 ment that the three spawn had 21 attacks on the charge!
Next game I'm also giving them the Mark of Nurgle and they will be even tougher!

One of the things I loved doing in 5th was running two Nurgle Daemon Princes, but I can't do this in a plague marine army now as the Plague marines will be stuck in the Elite slots without a MON lord :(

Thanx, they are ForgeWorld.
I bought them on eBay from a guy who sold the T-junction and turn separately - i regret not buying those as I don't have any of the turns or T-Junctions and the road are now OOP.
I think I might make some using insta mould to copy the textures.

After the game when I typed up the list for ArbitorIan to do the batrep I noticed I bought his Power Sword twice. I truly hated doing a pen and paper List! hurry up battle scribe!!!

Great report! So much FNP everywhere! Pretty crazy how the FA slot used to be laughable now there are several great choices (Spawn, FNP Raptors, Nurgle Bikes, etc).

I still love to scratch my lists out on paper, there is something about sitting cross legged on the floor with books spread around that makes me happy.

Absolutely love your bat reps, bloody brilliant every time. One of the best parts of it is seeing all those old school models - Arbitorlan because of you I've developed an unhealthy addiction to buying old school noise marines and Slaaneshy deamons from Ebay

Edit - How are noise marines [with sonics of course] in the new dex? Better, worse, the same?

Those GW ones have such ugly legs. So now we both have legless ones - giant slug Nurgle ones and floaty cable Slaanesh ones...

tyrannosaurus wrote:Edit - How are noise marines [with sonics of course] in the new dex? Better, worse, the same?

I think they might be better, just not against Plague Marines! FNP did mitigate a lot of my shooting, even from the Doom Siren. The Ignores Cover is a huge bonus, but not against an army whose regaulr save is better than a cover save anyway....

As Panic said, we both chose lists so that we could primarily try out new stuff. Possessed, Warp Talons, Sorcerers, Lords and some regular Chaos Marines (which I wouldn't normally field!)

In my next game I will definitely be bringing spawn again!
I'll probably give Possessed another chance too, as they never got involved in this game, they just hid in the bushes all game.

Great Hellreport.

Looking at you fella's great armies makes me realise I haven't played a game in well over a year, and that I want to.

I need to get an army painted...
