Thank you guys, and rip away dude, thats why I am here, to share.
Update incoming in a bit, but for now I am a bit upset. In particular with Wayland Games.
I have dealt with them several times and they have been good, apart from taking slightly longer than most for things to arrive. I have always had good products well packaged with no real issue.
However I recently ordered Operation Icestorm from them. Now it is not entirely their fault, as with the order I had a couple other items which where listed as "Available (usually shipped in 3-9working days)" on them, which I mistakenly thought that they would get to me in no more thatn 10-12 days. Operation Icestorm was listed as in stock at the time of the order.
Now they inform me that "Operation Icestorm" is out of stock and is "estimated to arrive in the next two weeks".
This is an ongoing case so can't rant to much, but enough to say this is the last order i will be placing with them. Totally disappointed. I saw a couple days ago a thread on dakka saying about this issue, wish I had seen it before. So got to say to you, I do NOT recommend them to my friends.!!
Rant over off to paint a rusty wall, and some tag's which I must restrain myself for.

Sorry to here you were effected by this man. It's a ridiculous mess, you should all have received these a long time ago. I'm annoyed on your behalf. If you can cancel that order and get your money back I'm pretty sure Shae has a couple left in stock. Just pm him, or post in his thread, to check first, he's quick to reply and I've never seen anyone say less than brilliant things about the service.

Nice fence (and good idea to stick them together and then cut them, I'd have ended up doing that the long way...) and the wall is progressing nicely.
Good luck with the order.

They're very good. But here's my thought: why is the recesses area verdigris, if the rest isn't metal?
65595
Post by: Camkierhi
My thinking was that they were brass, or copper panels inlaid in the recesses. Maybe not then?

Post by: inmygravenimage
Makes sense, but I don't feel like there's quite enough of original metal to give it context.

Some brown washes should fix it. Those walls look great mind you and the Graffiti is excellent!
The picket fences made me chuckle. I might have to watch blue velvet again now.
That land raider looks fantastic, almost a dead ringer for the actual model
I've had trouble with wayland before, the only thing I order from there now is paints and products from the smaller companies around they are OK in that regard.
Also I hear if you say the name 3 times a rep appears to defend the company name ...
62749
Post by: Dr H
Keep at it Cam. You have to try these things.
The rust streaks could maybe be darker in the centre. Like this:
Also, as a little touch, maybe a recent thin streak over the graffiti. Shows the rusting is an ongoing and constant effect.
The Verdigris. The texture you have there is very rocky/concrete-y. I'm assuming that you're trying to show that the metal has corroded away and stained the concrete?
I can't find any pictures to help with this though, I keep finding things people have painted green... Try having a google to find what you are going for.
I can't really help much beyond that, as I don't know what it looks like IRL to be able to say if you have it right or not (you may be spot on and I don't know...). Maybe a more subtle application of green?
65595
Post by: Camkierhi
Thank you so much guy's, the Verdi is ongoing, currently got a wash on it, see how that goes.

Post by: Red Harvest
Ack, here I am just getting started with my fence, and you're already moving on to another project.
Not sure about the skeletons in the niches. But that might just be a matter of personal taste on my part. With that sort of bas-relief, there is generally a background layer as well as a foreground layer.
About the order. I had a similar problem with a US mail order store last year. One thing was back-ordered, but everything else was in stock. However by the time the back-order came in, two of the initially in-stock items were out of stock and so they were then back-ordered. More waiting. Utterly absurd, IMHO, this odd sort of chain. Not a smart way to treat a paying customer. I don't do business with the place anymore.
When the stores list stuff as 'available' it means the store can order it from the distributor and get it in the time frame mentioned. But they don't know if the distributor actually has the product--so the distributor may need to back-order it. One might think that these places would try to track inventory, and 'available' inventory, a bit better in this day and age.
The demand for Icestorm has over-whelmed CB (tiny company w/~30 employees) too. They have had to alter their release schedules several times, because Icestorm is taking up so much of their production resources. It's worth the wait though. A very well done starter box set. You'll want to find a way to weigh down the buildings that it comes with.
Lol. Dennis Hopper at his creepiest. And that is saying something. My favorite David Lynch movie.

Secondly, I got a fantastic surprise from LT in the post, this little baby is mine!

Post by: Casey's Law
The sponsons are another good job well done. Don't worry about Dakka, focus on getting RL back to status quo so you can enjoy the time you get for Dakka. I feel like there are a few of us Scots toughing it out at the moment, we should probably convene for beers, games and chat every now and again for a morale boost.

Post by: Dr H
Good luck with RL. Hope it improves soon.
Indeed they do look the business. Good job.
Out of interest, what size tubes have you used to make them (assuming that they are polystyrene tubes)? I'm never entirely sure which ones to get so that they fit neatly into each other.
30344
Post by: monkeytroll
That just means you need to get as many sizes as you can Doc You can never have too many tubes
62749
Post by: Dr H
If I had the money, I would likely get one (or two) of each. As it is, I can't splash the cash so freely at the moment.
And it would drive me nuts if I did fork out on a load of tubes and found that they didn't fit. If only they noted the internal diameter as well as the outside diameter...
I do already have loads of potential tubes in the shape of many ex-pens etc... But sometimes polystyrene is better for the job.
30344
Post by: monkeytroll
I generally order mine from EMA (which yeah, generally turns into a largish order and relative money drop, and I can fully understand cash preventing supplies ), for most of theirs they do list inner and outer diams.

I'm quite sure I saw it mentioned somewhere that at least one of the mayor brands' (Evergreen or Plastruc) successive styrene tubes sizes fitted snugly into each other.
Will try to dig it up, and I'll get back to you with that!
Cam Glad it made it safe! I'd love to hear your thoughts now that you see it up close, when/if you can spare the time!

If I remember correctly, Evergreen fit in a little loosely, plastruct fit in snugly -both have their uses.
65595
Post by: Camkierhi
Thank you for the support.
I tend to try and buy evergreen, and I may be wrong, but you skip a size between. That is to say they code there product "223,224,225" if you want them to go inside eachother you order 223 and 225, or 224 and 226.
These guys are amazing and I have never had a problem with them, they are also very quick.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EVERGREEN-STRIP-STYRENE-WHITE-TUBE-1-8-224-/380933138706?pt=UK_Toys_Wargames_RL&hash=item58b1626912#ht_2404wt_1095
But I have also cheated a bit and for much cheapness gone to these guys, they take a little longer to get to you, and the quality is no where near as good, but the product is OK and you find that they all kinda fit inside eachother...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/60-pcs-Assorted-size-Styrene-ABS-pole-Rod-Pipes-and-Square-Sections-500mm-x-60-/400317160430?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item5d34c31bee#ht_3207wt_1095

Good work on the tank. Nice progress.
The wall piece is an improvement. Keep thinking along those lines. A couple of observations; There is likely to be a "run" from the bottom of the sword, as it's a low point that water would run off from.
Also, if you're doing verdigris run off, make sure to do some in the recesses of the skeleton, where water will also collect. Or does brass go the opposite of that? I dunno, best check that first.

It-- the tank-- for some reason has more of a futuristic look than the Games Workshop version. Careful now, the Grinches of Nottingham get grumpy when people show them up

Thank you guys,
The wall is still very wip. not sure where it is going, could be progress on that , but deadline is miles away so not pushing myself.
The LR, well thank you for the comments.
Here is this evenings efforts, .....Doors.
Got to tidy up those stripes.
C & C as always very much appreciated.
65595
Post by: Camkierhi
Ok fair enough doors are boring, how about guns?
The one below is GW, but I thought I would make up a more suitable type, notice for instance the lack of "sight" and also the ammo would be fed from inside, so no ammo feed, but an ejection port to send the casings out, will hopefully model up some casings to lie on the hull, below the gun.
I have magnitised this so like the sponsons it can be swapped out if I can be Arsed to make other weaponry for it. Don't think you get that many options these days, used to be you could have flamer, bolter, melta, autocannon or lascannon. Now I am unclear on if you can have any options at all, just seems if you have Twin Las you have to have Heavy Bolters.
Anyways thank you for looking in, Your opinions are precisious to me, so leave a thought if you have one. Cheers.

What else? feel like I am gettting there now, but not sure, do I add "stuff"? Camo netting, oil drums, stowage. I feel I want to, but this is a terminator tank, not a mobile home like a Leman Russ.
Also what's missing?
And finally what shall I put in the front alcove? Bit of artwork? Sculpture?
All your thoughts on this are gratefully recieved. And please don't be afraid to say "You did that wrong!" Like I know the tracks are too wide.
So here is where it is at...

From the last lot, I have addd several coats of yellow to try and shade the green, Can see it in person better. Touched up my silly little slips, and the cheating part, put some purple on him, which Gits is adding to some of his models so I have stolen it.

Might be late to the party, but since it is 40k and all I think you need some Imperial Eagles and skulls, can't get enough of them skulls.

Good finishing touches to your mantis. Like the little mantis on the knee.
For the tank, study the official model to see what comes attached and what people stick on.
The edges and ridges could do with a little more contrast. A lighter edge highlight on the upper edges (not all) and some dark wash along the recesses (or black-lining but maybe not quite so dark as black). Almost anywhere the angle of the surface changes. Just to bring out the edges some more... but not too much... just a touch...

Thank you guys, really appreciate the feed back.
@ Jehan-reznor , you are so right. I did kinda notice it after blindly following all these silly pictures on GW, and in books. But as it is card superglued on I can not remove it to put it in the right spot. I am however completely with you, it is one of my biggest gripes about the set up they tend to use, shooting your own men on the way out the door is typical.
Have to put that right with the next few.
But for now finiching touches, and a bit of painting and this is done, onto other things.
Got the walls to finish but I am trying to relax and not rush them. Fancy knocking up some silly scatter terrain. Still got a house to finish. Working on a Warlord for my orks (other thread), Think I might also start putting together a few gun units for these tanks and see if I cant mold them, they are easy enough to make but time consuming. Do a few and Knock up some predators, oh that reminds me, going to buy some of OneManNoodles rhino kits the end of the month.
Infinity is on back burner as can't bloody buy the stuff for love nor money here.
Oh and did think I want to do the Termy squad for the LR kinda finish it off, was thinking Hammers and shields and truescaling termies. But I am working from AoBR marines, so that could be a challenge.
Right onwards see you soon, if I am not here check out my oither ORK blog in sig.....

you sir are one of the few that mastered the small scale casting splendidly!!! the chains are an awesome idea!!!
the camo marines landraider is a beautiful piece... I think the scale is not any mm off to the real kit piece... with the chapter associated surfaces it is still in your face marine, but it is a refreshingly sight that even hints a slight homage due to the camo scheme towards tau in my opinion... which I rather think is a very clever amalgam...
the hammer décor on the sides is an interesting idea, while lurking your thread I was wondering what you might come up with for that space...
you are truly a scratch builder of the crème de la crème....

Thank you,
As to scale, according to interwhatsit....
IRL LR 10.3m long, 6.1m wide, 4.1m high
1:56 18.3cm long, 10.8cm wide, 7.34cm high
GW LR 17cm long, 10cm wide, 7 cm high.
Mine 19cm long, 11cm wide, 8cm high.
So I am a bit big, but closer to true than GW. Heres a shot
Oh and next up.
Been mucking about with the idea of a truck, Imperial close to Taurox, but mine. Can't find dimensions for the taurox anywhere, but working on a theory.

Ah yes the GW LR is one of their better proportioned vehicles but yours is still much better scale. There's no doubt it could take a squad into battle. Thanks for the scale shot.

Yep, when it comes to vehicle scaling... yours is much more believable.

Post by: Red Harvest
Really? He scratch-built a Land Rover, so, seems a logical progression. Plus, the Land raider would be the easier of the two.
LR looks just right. I like the sleek look it has. As far as gun and door placement, IIRC, the Space Marines (or whoever builds marine vehicles) are dumb, and simply follow without thought whatever designs have survived, no matter how garbled those designs are.
Edit: for clarity.

My Marines, The Dragons Errant are a unlisted Salamander group, they have all weapons mounted front, assault doors on the left and right are behind the sponson weapons as they originally were meant to be. BUT the GW imagery oin codeci as wella s some of the toruney rule nazis get upset if they are not as Cam and the books show. They forget that the fluff supports different "patterns" of the same vehicles.

It looks great in all the photos except something is off in the head on view. That may be the fact I have a cool truck heading straight at me, but the proportion just seems a little off? Maybe because of the angle of the windscreen it looks too small?
43045
Post by: Casey's Law
I like it but I think the back could be bigger so it looks like it could comfortably take 10 guardsmen like your LR. If I was being really picky then it might be a touch too wide for me.
65595
Post by: Camkierhi
So we like the general design, with the crew cab, and a seperate cargo "bed", But it is a bit too chunky, and not quite long enough, and I am completely with you Archer, my windscreen is too small.
No problem, MkII on the way then. More truescale. Thanks for the feedback, exactly what I wanted.
Dimensions wise this one was 7cm wide, 11cm long and 6.5 cm high, so about the same size as the Taurox, but maybe a bit tall, next one will be a bit bigger, but less chunky.
43045
Post by: Casey's Law
More truescale is a good mantra in all things modelling I feel. It's music to my ears. Like more Dakka but the more refined side of the coin.
65595
Post by: Camkierhi
For Dakka was thinking about guns mounted on the fender, but more likely a pintle mount on roof, not sure.
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
Might I suggest ladders for those high doors!
43045
Post by: Casey's Law
Yeah, for dakka I'd go for a hatch on the roof of the passengers side of the cabin. An autocannon always feels like the meatiest gun for these situations.

I like the overall shape nice and boxy, the back trailer section could do with enlarging and the window screen as well maybe do the rhino guard section on it ?
The other thing is the front grill needs to be larger ( I gather the white section represents that ) then add some kind bumper bars over it, maybe some lights on the wheel fenders as well.
65595
Post by: Camkierhi
Thank you guys, taking all that on board.
Some of the details will follow, but for now here's MkII....
Started with Chasis, cheated a bit but heck why not...
Stuck an engine in it......( no idea why, never going to see it??)
Front end, with a bigger grill...
Started adding crew cab type area...
Then got a bit carried away....
Thoughts?

Post by: Casey's Law
I like where MkII is going.

Post by: Gitsplitta
The best part in my opinion... is that you added an engine that will never be seen. Mark of a true crazy-man.
72556
Post by: Red Harvest
The engine actually runs. Now Cam needs to work on the transmission
Why am I reminded of this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GMC_CCKW ?
The grill might need a bit of touch up. Try using something cylindrical? Make them vertical instead of horizontal?

Thank you guys, yes I am nuts and yes Red I am happy because that is exactly what i am going for, a future "Deuce and a 1/2". Not had chance to do muchtoday so far, but sitting down now, but I have some good news....
A friend rang earlier today and asked if I wanted some old models he was throwing out. he nows I do models but not sure if I wanted his dregs.
Now they are not all complete and some are not even there but other bits are. My son Loves WWII figures and has sat down to do some of these with me now, which is rare and AWESOME. But a lot of the "bits and pieces" and several of the kits I have claimed for my own use. The more complete tanks unfortunately he wants and because I want to encourage him I am letting him have. I have grabbed several spare arms as the hands have great posing that you just don't get with GW.
So it is like xmas early for me, even if the wee spud has grabbed the best of it, I am very happy. To be honest even happier as he is sat down with me.
Back later with an update.

Just a little bit, added some details, but mainly here are a couple scale shots, thoughts appreciated, ie true enough for scale?

Scale looks good, and I like the new front grill too.
Maybe a ladder of some sort for driver access?
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Ladder?? How about some doors?
72556
Post by: Red Harvest
Yah, grill much improved. You've scaled the truck to the tires, or so it looks. A step-ladder like those seen on the cabs of 18-wheelers/semis or some of the larger earthmoving vehicles seems needed. I think those tires might be something close to 4' in diameter in scale. They are big. Or consider some sort of running board.
Nice to here Camkierhicito ( li'l Cam) and you had some fun with the models.

Post by: JoeRugby
Looks good Cam, a ladder like littletower sys and and some mud guards.
I can't put my figure on it but something seems off to me about the bonnet. I think it might be how it connects to the cab or it could just my jealousy over your scratch build skills coming out.

Looks much better and the front grill and looks spot on and we don't need doors think dukes of hazard
Nice haul especially if it was free, plus quality time is an all round winner

The field kitchen kit I own too... You have yourself a fortune in plastc sitting there...
I would make a deal with your son here...he can play with the lot of it and you can make the whole into true awesomeness...
Your truck looks very good scale wise...what I am currently finding a bit hard to understand is the pointy shape of the bonnet. My own two scratch built halftracks both have a flat middle section...since in rl the bonnet is able to be opened from both sides I expect some trapdoor details there no matter the shape? Hinges and stuff? Also love the flat bed roofing skeleton, the slightly malformed tubes add a lot of realism to the model...will you add a tarpaulin to it?
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
I see the truck is driver on right, makes sense over there in UK-land. here the diver would normally be the left hand side of the cab, the MG ring area is a good touch, truck will need the step-up parts with such huge tires, and a good pintle mount for the heavy stubber, or storm bolter.

That's a seriously good haul. I'm green over here.
Nice progress on the truck.
Can't really add anything that hasn't already been mentioned. Keep at it.

Ta,
@ LT Thanks, and see below, ladder ........check!
@ Gits Good point I suppose.
@ Red, Thank you and hopefully you are also answered below, I would also say, I agree completely about the tyres being big, but GW tend to be off, and I have made this thing with the intent of it being a desert type, now I am probably well off, but big puffy tyres are maybe better on sand?
@ JoeRugby Thank you sir, hope the bonnet looks better now, and mudguards to follow promise. (might have to paint something silly on them.)
@ LDD Thank you, am glad it meets your approval, only thing with the DoH approach, there is bullet proof glass in te windows!
@Vik, Thank you sir, see below for some of your answers, the tarp will follow also, but going to make it removable I think. And the kits are awesome, I am secretly and very selfishly hoping they will bore of them after a good while, and I can get my mitts on some of them, but we will see, like I say, it is great that it has got there interest.
@ Shas Thank you on all counts, indeed see below also, oh and of course he is on the correct side to be driving! Where else!
@ Dr. H Thank you. Indeed I will sir, you are personally responsible for the detail I am going to plow in to this silly thing. Though i am sorry, cant be asked to do the interior on this one.
OK update, few details added.....
Head lights....
Bonnet catches and hinges....
Doors with steps and handrail to assist ....
And a little handrail on the back...
And a rail for the pintle mount....
Thoughts as always appreciated, and thank you all for your great support.

So very good.
The connection between the engine hood and the cab seems a bit awkward though. Perhaps add something to create a line to show where the hood might open?
And some sort of hubcap detail? Separate the front windshield into 2 panes-- like the orginal deuce and a half? Exhaust pipes?
Although I suspect you are already on those details
Really like this one.

So a bit more to do, but before that supply drop, ordered up some stuff from OneManNoodle, arrived today in great time and I am a very very happy chap. Couple Rhino's and some odd details for some of my work, some of which will be on the current project.....
Right, back at it for this evenings stint, probably not much tonight bit tired, might call it a night early, but then I will probably just do a bit, "oh and got to stick that bit on now, and might just put a lick of paint on that and oh bugger it's 2 in the morning and I asm up in 3 hours..... "

Slight change of direction. LoER Comp is closing soon so I had better sort out my entry, so took time out to sort it, getting very close now. So close I am not sure I should be posting pictures, but here we go....
And some of the different conmfigurations.....
And with a previous winner, hoping some of the luck will rub off....
Not sure whether to include the wire fence or just enter the wire fence, feels a little odd with the other, but on a battle field would look fine.
Also not sure if I am finished with them yet or going to do a little more, maybe some OSL by adding a fire in some of the alcoves. Not sure. Originally planned on making a whole scene for these which may still happen, but wanted to make sure they are done for the comp.
Anyways as always your thoughts are very much appreciated and your comments really spur me on.

Well with the time of year and life being what it is at times, did not get to the stage I wanted with this, may be try later on. But on the other hand, since I do not really play, does anyone want these? Free to a good home.
OK did do a little bit more, and took my pics for submission to the comp.
Heres the extra bit....
Did a post....
Then knocked up a gate from some coffee stirrers and a bit of card...
Stuck it together, and added a couple little details to the recess...
Slapped a bit of paint around...
And now to save the embarressment of lossing to the amazing work you have all done, a selection of my final pics..(Monkey might disqualify me for this..)
Back to the buggies and trukks next on my ork thread, where there will also be final shots of me latest MAWB. Here...well we will see, I got a Hive Tyrant for Christmas, just for the pleasure of painting, so maybe that, but got a Rhino just about assembled too.
Off today to see the last Hobbit movie with the family, and a nice meal out too, so back later.
Thank you for looking in and please feel free to comment. Oh and I am geniune with the give away of the Walls, I have decided that I can't keep all this stuff, on the off chance that one day I might get a chance to play a game, so a lot of my models will be up for grabs soon, if there are any you are interested in let me know.

Well the walls got 3rd place in the competition, which I am honestly surprised at, the level of work in the comp was amazing, and I have come away with a whole bunch of ideas and thoughts. looking forward to the next one, OneMan Noodle is running it, as his amazing wall sections won this round.
We are looking at moving house this year, which is all good, but leaves me a problem, far too many models, so I am giving away a fair bit, so if anyone wants the wall sections PM me they are free, just cover the postage and they are yours. I will be selling some stuff off, mainly mini's my creations are free, but I can't give away armies that have cost me hundreds, not that I will charge hundreds. So I will let you know exactly what I am loosing, as an when I get to it, which will be sooner than later.
Of course I will be creating more as I go here.
On that note, a question for you molding guys out there...
Resin. Currently using a Low Odour 2 part Fast Cast resin. It is fairly good, no nasty smells, sets up hard-ish, picks up most detail nicely. Struggles with crisp corners, And struggling with small objects like rokkits, it's kind of syrupy and struggles to pour nicely.
I also occasionally use Dental plaster, when I use this, and make it watery, it takes a little longer to set, but I get beautiful crisp casts, from the same molds!
Is this a common problem with all resins?, I have noticed that several of you use different resins! Which do you use? What issues do you have?
Here is a pic of recent attempts, happy with most of it.
Breif explanation of parts....
Made up some cog wheels moldeed from a kiddies toy tractors wheels, Then made a track unit, to add some detail, I added spring parts, and suspension, this I made with rods and tubes and springs I either wound myself or cut up clothes pegs to steal the springs, I have put the originals in so you can see how I made them.
Thanks for stopping by, please feel free to comment. Automatically Appended Next Post: Happy New Year Dakka!

I am a patternmaker by trade (if you have google time you can learn about this almost lost trade) but basically it is all about casting metals and resins so have a fair bit of experience and am happy to discuss specific things if you are ever interested.
However on your points above:
Some resins are just better at reproducing details. The thicker a resin is the harder it is for air to move through it and get up any bleed holes you have before the resin reaches the end of its "pot life" (the point where it won't pour out of a pot any more) and therefore you will get airlocks, typically around the sharp edges.
On the note of sharp edges these are typically considered a major no-no in the casting world so if you can round them off or eliminate them altogether all the better.
I have always preferred a "fast cast" polyurethane two part resin (polyol and isocyanate) as it is very runny and gets great detail. Although you have roughly 5 minutes of usable time which you really need to mix well and then degass (ie suck the air bubbles out of it). I always find you get a much better result with polyurethane if you can have an open mold that you then sand the back off than a closed mold unless of course you have access to a vacuum chamber.....
The resins I tend to prefer are referred to as F16 or F19, they are from a company called Meury Enterprises but not sure you can get them in your neck of the woods, pretty expensive though.
You could also look for an additive to put in your resin to slow its reaction time down and also to thin it out to make pouring easier.

Thank you Archer, great response.
Been a while, sorry, been busy on Orky matters on other thread.
Putting this here even though it is slightly orky, because this I ythink comes under general knowledge.
Molding!
Well I originally bought some silicone mold stuff and some resin from ebay and was happy enough, but as explained above, not 100%.
Now several peeps have been in touch and in the end I opted to try OneManNoodles suggestion.
http://www.sylmasta.com/acatalog/Casting---Mould-Making.html
Bought the G26 resin, and the 370 silicone. So far I have found that the silicone, although taking a while to set is a vast improvement over my previous one. It is a lot better at picking up detail and is much more pliable. The resin is great, it takes about the same time to set as my previous one, but picks up detail way better, nice sharp edges, no real bubble issues, pours better in to some of my terrible mold efforts.
The only thing not 100% is it does not like my old molds! It works ok, but the molds are failing fast! It is hardening up the silicone, and some times it sticks fast to the silicone, yes i am using an "demolding agent", (well ok I either use baby talc, or olive oil dependant on the mold. But still had no issue here before, but do now. It is fine to a degree.
All in all highly recommend it.
Suppose you want some pics of what I been molding?!!
OK I am completely an amatuer here, but hope this helps you out.
I need some large circular bits for a project, so could not find anything that rocked my boat, so make it then....
Make an "original", I use allsorts here...card...
Then I added some foam and a few rivets....
Stuff it to some lego and covered it in silicone....badabing a mold.......
A note here, I fouled up, making the "original" from foam meant it floated in the silicone, gave me no end of trouble, So always make sure your Original is either stuck down or does not float.
Next pour some resin in it and.....
Oh you say "whats the other one?"......well this is my other tried and tested idiot proof mould making method....
Get a good flexible receptical (this is the box from some masking tape (frog tape I think)) Press in some plastercine, and carve your design in there. If you want to make a mold, make it embossed, if you want to just make a few quick then you have to think about it a bit and indent your design.
Pour inb some resin and badabing more stuff... I find that this is generally good for about a dozen casts, then you are loosing detail on the mold.
"Wait a minute! Whats that in the middle?" I here you mumble, well that would be a scenic base about 70mm wide.....
You see, I am useless at calculating how much stuff to mix, I do it all by eye. So mix a bit too much resin....no worres, pop out a scenic base or another wheel or another jet engine, or anothertrack set, or another....ok you get the picture. Got me a stack of spare bits now.
Well thats it for now, supposed to be going to work today to clean cars, but we have had a foot of snow overnight, and I don't think I will bother travelling 50 miles toclean cars covered in snow anyway?!! So hopefully these circles will get some love and become something.
Thank you for looking in and I hope this has maybe helped a bit...

How are you finding making moulds using cardboard as the master ? I had considered it a couple times but figured there would be to much warpage or deformity from the card becoming wet or collapsing from pressure/heat ?
65595
Post by: Camkierhi
So far it has not been an issue, I did worry. I would say that you will loose your "Original". They seem to soak up some of the chemicals and become, Greasy. Plastic can obviously be washed and used, but card, I don't think paint would like it much.
I have had no issues with warping, or degrading materials though.

Well as long as you get a good mould it aint much of an issue, good to know for future work

Time to reserect this old puppy....
Well I am busy as hell in RL and I have been doing some stuff, on my other thread. But this is not ork related so going to put it here.
New LoER competition is up, and the theme is "Trapdoor"
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/654377.page
YOU NEED TO LOOK AND ENTER NOW!
Ok well it got me brain juices going so much I have to try and do something, so here we go.....
Some of this will have to be secret !!!
Ruined corner of a building with a trapdoor leading to a basement,
Started with the scrap from my last project...
Started breaking it down into blocks...
And promptly built a foundation/ basement...the material of the block I think is called Sintra board, I use PVC Pipe adhesive on larger scales like this and it works a treat, mixed up a bit of the old dental plaster and poured her on, sets nice and quick....
Next a word on materials......(please do not be offended if I am telling you how to suck eggs. This is hopefully helpful to some people)
This is this Sintra board, "acquired" from some contractors fitting signs. They gave me a little bit. (read an 8x4 board of 5mm and a 6x4 board of 10mm.)
It is quite stable, doesn't seem to warp, cuts easily, glues easily, takes paint, no idea on how much it costs.
Then there is foam board ....I find there are two varieties
This stuff which is mostly available, it good for building stuff provided you dont break the surface, and does not like superglue, polycement, or spraypaint on its core material.
Then ther is this, which has a different core material, that still does not like solvent but takes spray paint ok. This I find excellent for building walls. in particular exterior rendered walls.
Unfortunatelyt it seems like gold dust, quite hard to find.
Now back to the project, that last boarding material in action (yes thats why I put that bit in)
The exterior walls....
Couple of scrap bits from previous projects, I like to mark them out for brick pattern so when I cut the edges they line up, I do not labour this, I just quickly pencil it on..
And mark out windows etc..
Then the reason I love this stuff, carefully cut through the top layer of Paper and peel off sections, I cut to the brick lines. then cut grooves for the mortar lines in the foam.
Bit more cutting and fiddling, making sure my edges are brick line.
Oh and on the back, using some cheap superglue and sprinkled with Bi-carb, lay out the brick pattern, if you have ever seen the inside of your walls it looks rough as hell.
WOW big post, well back later, Thanks for the posts guys, very much appreciated. Sorry its been so long....

Post by: Dr H
Doing a fine job there, Cam'.
One little addition; some blood on (and around) the handle of the trapdoor to show someone opening/closing it with bloody hands. Just a little bit, don't go quite so far as the rest.
Where did the dead "dino" come from, did you sculpt it?

having nightmares...yet?...
bloody hell...literally...
i can only imagine you having watched some episodes of criminal intent and so on for reference...*shudders*...
but totally convincing looking...
and... is it a dino corpse? i zoomed in as best as i could and i am not able to tell...i know there are bits out there for basing and so on that have rotten dead cows...saw´em somewhere....
i like it immensely!

Thanks,
@ Shas Thank you, aiming for a good horrific scene.
@ Dr.H Thank you, will think on the blood, but may not be appropriate.
@ Vik Thank you too, I am afraid we see too much horror and terrible things these days.
Did some work on the outside this afternoon....
Oh and the skelly...
Started life as a kids toy Tricerotops toy, then I cut it up a bit, put some skin on it in the form of tissue with PVA, and then once it was in situ, I put down a blob of hot glue, and some if that sink plug chain for guts.......hope this helps....
Thank you all for looking.

Post by: Camkierhi
@ Shas , see below...
@ graven, styrene square tube, rivet sheet and some glue, Oh and a blowtorch. The nice rust look is by spreading superglue and sprinkling with bi-carbonate of soda, can even layer it up. (word of warning, super glue is nasty stuff, and combined with bi-carb is really nasty if you play with it, but sets well enough and solid enough. No issues to date.)
OK heres the bunny.............
Bothers me it is a bit out of scale, but not too bad.

Very cool. A possible tweak is to do something with the exposed bricks or blocks, the gray ones. They look unfinished, so perhaps something to darken or lighten the mortar?
There is enough blood spatter to drive a CSI officer completely mental.

I think my personal favorite touch is how when you first open the trapdoor you only see the bunny in a clear patch of ground, like he's just hanging out. But in the next shot that shows his whole room, that clear spot is the only patch not covered in gore from his previous victims.
Brilliant

Congrats on the new place. Just remember to carefully label all the boxes. I know it seems obvious, but I can say from firsthand experience that, well, forgetting is possible.

where labelling boxes is concerned... i suggest doing this on the upper side and two sides as well... so that no matter where you later on store the boxes you still are able to read out the contents...

Thank you all for your thoughts.
So, moved at last, been a very busy few weeks. Work and moving and life meaning little time for toys, sorry I have not been around as much, but I have popped in here and there.
Well finally got to do something today, just about related to subject. My new workshop. Well just about. Our new house is nice and big, by our standards, meaning a large kitchen diner, with enough room for the family. So the lounge became a store room for everything else, then my beloved turns around and says, well you might as well have the front half of the lounge for your modelling!....So with the rest of the house getting there I decided today was the day to start in at making the lounge my zone. Half (the smaller half) will eventually have a sofa and TV etc.but it is a big room (by British standards) 6m (18ft) x 4m (12ft) approx. I figure I can have a modelling station and a separate painting station, plenty of storage and even fit in a game table.
Well pics or it didn't happen...
Modelling station...
Painting station still needs sorting out..
Storage...
Bit of room for more plastic I recon, still got a lot of boxes to go through though...
Yes those are all full of models to be made and painted.
It's all a bit rough at the moment, but we are in no rush for this room to be tidy, so I can take time later to tidy it all up and give the room a lick of paint.
My better half is happy enough the kitchen dinner is just as big as the lounge, so there is room for it to be a family room.

Lastly fitted a holder to the side of my modelling desk to hold my soldering iron and glue gun...
Thank you all again for your support, normal service will resume soon ish...and I am looking forward to seriously motoring on with projects in this new space.

Thanks guys.
If you follow my other blog "orkishness" then you will know I am starting to get going again, plowing through a couple projects.
Well this one is definitely not Orky so it better go here.
Camo Marines are back, been wanting to do this for ages.
So the story goes, my Ultramarines use Camo if necessary (scream if you like ) And I am also going to truescale the vehicles a bit, maybe even some of the marines. Did a truescale LR a while back scratch built. Well I bought a couple of OneManNoodles Not-Rhino's, they where seconds and had a couple bits missing, but that is no bother to me, they are brilliant models well designed and near to the normal rhino size, this is a problem for me though. So I have this idea, Scouts need transport too, so how about a couple razorbacks to transport the boys give them a bit of fire support. They would be a smaller more agile model than the normal rhino my marines will transport around in, something to get around the narrow streets or jungle terrain. So here we go, enough rambling on...
This is what it looked like this morning, before I started to paint, this was not even built at 8am today, scratched together the twin linked Las and added a few details, knocked up a tail gate...
Very happy myself with the end result, OMN's bits are excellent..
And with big brother and marine for a bit of scaling.
Your thoughts please, good and bad are all welcome.
