Nice work on the skin! What exactly is your problem with it?

As for the burna staying green: I'd go for a very dark green, almost black, otherwise: plain black. Just my opinion of course, but I feel a lighter green will detract from the model's skin.

Post by: Imperial Monkey

I agree with CK in that it should be a really dark green. Also, make the nozzle at the end metal, give it a thorough asurmen blue wash and then drybrush the end black, it gives it a really good flame-damaged look.

And where is that effort in posting on my blog??

I need to getsome more pics up, maybe after the physics exam tomorrow...

Never seems as smooth as my reference pictures - comical looking, and perhaps a bit too bright? Possibly just needs a wash

I take it by very dark green you mean darker than it is, or might be with a black wash? (Ie darker than the dark green I am using on my other models)

Looking forward to pics!

I've taken a closer look in the gallery, and I really can't find any flaws, even when zooming on. Your ork skin is superb... If you want it less bright, consider adding ritting flesh or bleached bone for the final highlight stages. Alternatively, a thinned down blue or purple was would change the tone of the skin.

And by 'dark green' I mean 'almost black with sharp edge highlights', to really emphasize the mechanical look and differentiate if from the skin.

Thanks guys. I'm obviously just too picky. The last highlight had a mix of goblin green and bleached bone - was following the instructions in the "How to Paint..." book...

I may still just go with the black Burna...

Ok - for a change of pace - Da Deffkopta is almost complete (needs some GS, and paint of course!). As you can see, it can be fitted out in any Codex legal loadout. Please note the beefier Buzzsaw!

Yeah, I think I made that suggestion to someone else, but they thought it wouldn't fit. Red rags to bulls and all that. I thought it perfectly covered where I removed the Rokkits.

I'll get a detail shot for you tonight

Well - I'm down to 5 weeks before Crucible (small Glaswegian tourney) - for which I need everything assembled *and* painted. And I lose one of those weeks (next week) to Cornwall...

This week I will be concentrating on finishing (modelling) my two *other* Trukks...

Then I only have (to model) the Pain Boy and a Nob with Bosspole. While adding robes to these two I'll fill out the Mega-armoured Nob's robe too (proxying Warboss). Which will leave me with my 2nd Deffkopta and a *lot* of painting...

I only have to make *gallant effort* standard - sigh...

Wish me luck!

@CommissarKhaine: I've only missed two so far previously Third times the charm!

@The Good Green: Absolutely not! Though I will be able to take it slower from then on (haha!) I think I will enjoy actually getting some games in after that, and then a slow build up to 1750ish... So how long are you going to need to magnetize your other trukks?

Post by: Arakasi

@troy_tempest: Could not agree with you more! (Well, for your first statement - not the second - a fate which you conveniently avoided in our last clash!)

@endtransmission: Ummm... this week? The Nobz Trukk above already has the Trakks, first Boarding Plank and Reinforced Ram magnetised I haven't magnetised (or glued) the front wheels - they seem a snug enough fit as is. Still to do: Armour Plates, Grot Krew, second Boarding Plank, Wreck'in Ball, Stikkbomb Chucka and Red Paint Job (I don't have replacement wheels for this one - so I need to think of something else...)

On the plus side, magnetising is now a lot quicker now that I pretty much know what I'm doing (less hum-ing and ha-ing)

Da Dark Angelz Trukks were always supposed to incorporate SM parts to help with the theme. Where the first Trukk had very minimal SM parts, the Nobz Trukk (which is meant for Deffwing, but will be carting Da Inna Circul in the meantime) is looking like having a substantial number.

And without further ado - latest WIP:

Not visibly as far along as I'd like - but the Armour Plates (not present above) are almost ready - I just need to build the left side before I can "fit" them Got distracted on the double width radiator...

Thank goodness... or rather, thank Mork! The nob trukk is looking good. I like the smoke stacks off to one side, gives the impression the trakks have their own much larger engine under the passenger platform. I'm interested to see the armour plaits. Are you incorporating the SM tank doors on the bare side, or back? It makes a great nob truck!

Thanks x2. Yes - the resin parts are FW - the Ork Half Trakk Trukk. Now I just need to add some GS to have four colours before even painting. I wonder if that counts as the minimum three? (No, I'd never forgive myself...)

The Good Green wrote:Thank goodness... or rather, thank Mork! The nob trukk is looking good. Well, we now have smoke stacks *both* sides (as well as boarding planks) *and* armour plates! Gotta keep those weighty Nobz moving *fast*. Not to mention the start of the Big Shoota cupola and Wreck'in Ball. I don't think I'll be incorporating the SM tank doors in this one - it still needs to look open topped, AV10 and ramshackle - I'm thinking of using them to create a wedge shaped Reinforced Ram on Trukk 3.... I *am* thinking of perhaps adding some elaborate red exhausts down each side for Red Paint Job - cos its not like there are enough exhausts already on this vehicle!

And thats it for a week (progress wise) while I holiday in Cornwall. I would have liked to be further along (I would have liked to have finished the Nob Trukk and returned to the Big Mek Boyz Trukk). You would think with Mek Tools in the form of a servo harness my Big Mek would build faster. I guess you just can't rush Orkish ingenuity...

Thanks a lot guys - your continued interest and comments mean a lot. Still a lot of damage, plates and glyphs to add to reduce some of the clean SM lines - but I wait until I've chopped everything up to fit first so I know where to put them! Hopefully it looks like a trukk built with rhino parts rather than, say, a looted vehicle - as that was what I was going for!

In case it wasn't obvious - those armour plates lift right off (especially important as, for the moment, I don't actually use them!)

Holiday in Cornwall is almost over. I'm all rested ready for the final stretch to the 3rd July - 3 weeks to go. Final deliveries are waiting for me at work on Monday. Still so much to do...

Aim for this week is to once again finish the final two Trukks (modelling wise). I have more paint to finish spraying the first Trukk - I need to finish it completely (painted) by the end of next week, as I only have room for two Trukks in my carrying case on the plane.

Further sketches look like my second Deffkopta will be Avatar style - Grot Apache and Landspeeder style will just have to wait for later. *If* I can finish Trukk modelling this week I *might* make an early start on it...

Other than that - expect a pic update Monday night (well, Tuesday morning for anyone with sanity).

Back from Cornwall. Work was a bit excessive today, so not as much time as I had planned. Still, as promised - WIP pic:

I dithered a little on where to continue on the Nob Trukk (managed to cleanup a single boarding plank, and played around with the idea of magnetising the front wheels - the back wheels of the standard Trukk are the same size as the FW Half Trakk front wheels - but ended up leaving as is), so switched to da Big Mek's flying transport. Engine is now finished and, apart from probably some more (any) damage and glyphs, the reinforced ram. Removable, of course. Actually, for that matter, interchangeable with my first Trukk too. (Technically interchangeable with the Nob Trukk as well - but given that one will be painted white for Deffwing, it may look a little *odd*)

Will be attacking the original Trukk with spraygun and Orkhide Shade tomorrow, I mean this morning

Quick WIP of da Big Mek's Trukk before I hit the sack. Decided today's target was to get the boarding plank done. Of course, this required building the cab first, which required building the driver first - argh! Too late (early?) and too tired - will address other comments tomorrow, no, later today

@The Good Green: You and me both The paint will come (and is a requirement for my 3rd July deadline - eeek!)

@Rose_Mountainz: I have the magnetising pretty much down pat at the moment. What is taking all of the patience is customising each Trukk to be a unique snowflake! There is a good 5hrs between the last two WIP pictures. Maybe I'm just slow...

@CommissarKhaine: See response above re paint Yes, the boarding plank (and wheels for that matter) have not yet been cleaned up. Rest assured they will be. While I do tend to clean up as I go, the way the boarding planks attach means that I don't actually make any modifications to them, so they normally miss out until later. (One of the Nob Trukk boarding planks still needs cleaning up too...) I will try to post a picture pre paint with enough time for you to catch anything I missed! (Actually, I do that for any last minute suggestions too...)

Thanks for the comments guys - helps keeps the spirit up while I work towards my insanse deadline. Due to late nights (early mornings) I haven't bascoated the first Trukk yet - I think I'll have to make an effort for an early night tonight so that I can do it tomorrow morning. Work has been a bit insane, which hasn't been helping!

Apologies for not commenting enough in your threads - I do enjoy and keep on top of them though!

@moonshine: Thanks! Glad to provide inspiration. Be sure to let us know what you get up to, or better still - start your own Dakka project blog!

Right. No pic today. In a brief moment of sanity I decided to make it an early night, so didn't get much further on the Trukk - just magnetised the gunner seat/ledge. Why? Well it was going to make painting around/under it nigh on impossible - so this way I can place it in later. Occasionally magnetising stuff can be tricky due to thin pieces or inaccesible locations - both of which occurred here - in which case I've found creating mount points for the magnets a lifesaver - just drill holes into a piece of plasticard the same thickness as the magnet you are going to use, cut to size, and glue to the appropriate location(s) Added advantage is the the back will be perfectly flat (not achievable with a drill...). I have also magnetised the drivers arms (previously) for the same reason! (The FW Enclosed Cab Trukk - the driver is not removeable...)

Much mucking about, cursing and eventually spraying occurred this morning - so now everything that was previously black undercoated is now Orchide Shade. I really think I am going to need a compressor and probably a better airbrush - those compressed air cans from GW are rubbing me the wrong way, and the level markings that are supposed to get the consistency right, don't (well, not any time I've tried...) Once everything is working, its great - but getting there (and trying to be efficient about it) - not so much... Still - I am now ready to paint the frist Trukk next week, which is necessary for logistical issues of carting models between Coventry and Scotland... (oh, and you'll see more paint next week - yay!)

I was wondering, given I have magnetised the Big Mek Trukk so that the sides can be in the raised or lowered position (or absent), whether I should use these to represent Armour Plates - or is that a cop out? Originally I was toying with adding wheel guards, or perhaps even some structure to the back. Thoughts?

Arakasi

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/06/17 11:14:15

Post by: CommissarKhaine

No cop outs!

Seriously though, that might get confusing compared to your other trucks. Have you considered black orc shields from WHFB? You could mount them on a rail and then magnetize said rail - viking longship style, shields on the sides!

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/06/17 11:55:22

Post by: Gitsplitta

I like the idea of wheel guards...

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/06/17 12:00:58

Post by: Arakasi

Trukk 1 has an open cab, the standard half sides with gaps for boarding planks and is open at the back. Armour plates makes the sides full height.

Trukk 2 (Nobz, later Meganobz) has an open cab, beefy Rhino sides with gaps for boarding planks and is open at the back. Armour plates enclose the cab and add some protection to the front wheels and, to a lesser extend, the engine.

Trukk 3 (Big Mek) has an enclosed cab, optional half sides with no gaps for boarding planks in either a flat or upright configuration, optionally closed at the back. Armour plates do what without confusing anyone - especially me!?

The orc shields idea is a good one. I had considered magnetising plates to add on previously (on all three), which would be similiar, though less viking inspired I could use a similar idea for making wheel guards - just drop the rail and shields to wheel level. This will require further thought...

Funnily enough - I bought some of the new Boarboyz for (amongst other things) - their cool shields. I was planning to make raised Blood Axe symbols on the Nobz Trukk with two crossed Choppas with a shield in front...

@moonshine: Can't wait!

WIP pictures - finished gunners and wreck'in ball attachments - all removable of course!

Once again I've failed to make my goal of completing the Trukks this week. And there is still so much to do, and some tricky stuff too...

Plan for my last two weeks... (before Crucible)

Monday - paint first Trukk - I'm only expecting to get as far as base coats, and only on the parts I need, the detail will have to wait... I need to transport this to Scotland this week, as my carry cases will only let me take two Trukks on the plane at a time...

Tuesday - finish modelling Nobz Trukk and Big Mek Trukk - very big ask...

Wednesday - model painboy, boss pole nob and finish cloak on meganob. Nothing too special happening here (well, will attempt robes/cloaks on all) - so challenging, but should be possible...

Thursday - Deffkopta II - another very big task - more so than the Trukks I reckon...

Following week - paint! Trukks, Deffkoptas, Boyz, etc

If by some miracle I actually manage all of this - be prepared to comment quickly, cos once the undercoat goes on its too late!

Found my rhino top access doors, which are tempting me to use them for my wheel cover armour plates on the Big Mek Trukk - however - they will angle out because of how the wheels are, and I'm not too sure how to attach them (and keep them removable) - yet...

I like the look; god luck on getting it finished! As for the deffkopta: if you have a reasonably clear idea where you're going, you can finish one in a few hours I reckon. I would suggest spreading the Wednesday menu over three days though; gs needs to cure, and that way you can do a layer a day without smudging earlier work.

A few hours huh? And I thought I was being optimistic! Excellent thought on the GS though - I think I might bring them forward to Monday, so I can GS across the week, shifting everything else down... Goes to show that even blogging the most (seemingly) mundane things can result in good advice!

So, Partick Crucible (http://www.scribd.com/doc/30572609/Partick-Crucible) is in two weeks. I have a hectic and full schedule to complete as listed above. Your timely comments and suggestions are much appreciated, nay, required!

On the excellent advice of CommissarKhaine, I moved my Painboy, Nob and Meganob up to Monday night's task - and I am happy to report I actually was successful! In addition to allowing the GS to cure for any further work, it also gives you a (small) chance to add your comments, and more importantly your suggestions, before I reach base coat stage.

So here goes:

Painboy:

Nob with Bosspole:

Meganob with updated robe/cloak:

After so much time spent on my Trukks, I'm just shocked I managed to get these both out in a night - maybe there is hope for the 2nd Deffkopta yet! Probably to no surprise, cleaning up the metal painboy took longest. Doing two and a half robes/cloaks wasn't exactly quick either. The saying that you will always mix more GS than you need does *not* apply to robes!

I'm actually quite happy with how the Painboy and Nob with Bosspole came out. Can't quite put my finger on why I'm not as ecstatic about the Meganob. Anyway - over to you awesome Dakkites - we don't have much time to perfect these!

Too true!

The robes look pretty good. The Painboy looks best to me, smoothest robe and best integrated with the model. I think some signs of how the shoulder pads and/or boss pole attach to the cloak, for the Nob that is.

As for the MegaNob, I think a pic of the top would help. It looks like he has the biggest cape, but it attaches in the smallest way... like he is wearing a triangle.

I really like the apparent difference in speed by how windy the robes look. Slow and Purposeful really comes through in the meganobs cap. The Meganob's and Painboy's capse accent their poses quite well, too.

I think you could probably call them done, but I think you could do better.

Thanks for the input The Good Green!

I could GS over the boss pole so it appears to come up through a hole in the robe.

I could add new straps to the shoulderpads - GS or chain - probably crossing across the back...

I'll see about a top down photo of the Meganob. I am starting to think a cord/sash/chain around the middle, tied at the front might round him out. I was going for "billowing"

The difference in speed was mostly luck I think. I could position the Painboy and Nob upside down to cure, which stopped the weight of the GS dragging the robe back in as much, where as the meganob had even more GS weight...

Any thoughts on whether I need to add trim or any other details or not? (That goes to everyone!). I'll go take another look at CommissarKhaine's grotz...

Covering up the boss pole could work, just leave a tattered looking hole for it to come out of. I can't decide if I think any of it needs to be trimmed or anything, so I'll leave the rest of the commenting to the rest of Dakka.

Cheer.

Looking good! The robes are looking pretty decent (if a tad cape-like, but thay may ust be the stage they're in). I think I know what's bugging you with the meganob: the position of his robe doesn't fit his pose. I'd suggest to have it billowing out a bit to one side, towards the power klaw, so that the sense of movement of the cloak matches that of the model. The top part on the ack looks a tad off as well, but like TheGoodGreen said, we'd nee a top pic for an informed comment. Like the robes, they're really adding a lot of character! Also, the bosspole needs some more work on the nob, but since this is only the first stage I'm sure we'll be seeing that later on

As for trimmings: I'd focus on the basic shape first, but hoods (even tossed on their back) would seem highly approprate, and bullet holes can easily be added withh a pin vice. They had to get the robes somewhere, after all! . Also, if you can pul it off, a cord for the belt would look great. Good luck!

Yes - they are more cape-like than robes, though I do like them that way, and I'm having trouble visualising them as actual robes - as well as difficulties bringing myself to cover up more model detail... On the plus side, the Pain boy has his own cloth and hangings on the front, which I think make him look the best of the bunch.

Not seeing the issue you are seeing with the Meganob - or not visualising the remedy Could be a difference between having the model and only having photos to go by. Anyway - top down pics are below.

What work did you think the boss pole needed? Or were you just agreeing with The Good Green? (and waiting for me to act on my potential solutions?)

I'm going to start painting my Trukk now - so hopefully the top down views will have helped, and I'll come back later and see more ideas/help.

Thanks again guys! I really appreciate it!

From, the pics, it looks like the robe don't move the same way as the body. To me at least, meganob looks like he's striding forward, loking along his gun. This would imply that the robe would fan out to his left (the PK side) and backwrs. having fought in medieval armour (with cape!), I can safely say I 'feel' how a meganob should move . Don't know if this explanation made things clearer or not though, and like you said, it could just be the pics. You're the one holding the model, so your judgement is king!

What work did you think the boss pole needed? Or were you just agreeing with The Good Green? (and waiting for me to act on my potential solutions?)

The boss pole doesn't look attached; it could use some straps, or maybe you could have it poking through the robes, implying it's attached beneath them? The shoulder pads could be attached to the robe, but htat's pretty much umpossible for the bosspole.

As for the top view down: he has a hump of robe on his back that doesn't fit there, right in the middle; a real cloak would sag there, being lower then at the shoulders. So turn it into a hood . As a rule of thumb, cut out a trapezium shape for the robe, then drape it around the model; that should make the proportions about right (did for my grot kommissars, anyway).

Good luck on the truck, and I hope this helped out. Keep it up!

Hmmm... Popped back in as Trukk is going slower than expected - my Mechrite red doesn't appear to be as thick as it once was, requiring multiple coats...

He's striding forward in the direction of his gun, looking the same way, but not along it - its too far to the side and parallel... I think I'll ignore that bit for now and see if the other suggestions help!

I think I can fix the Nob with boss pole ok. I take it everyone is happy with the Painboy?

Yeah - the hump was where the original thinner cape came up over the armour engine workings. I don't think a real cloak would sag over a big lump of metal Burn maybe... But I get the point - it looks wrong. The hood idea sounds good - we'll see what I can manage...

Again - thanks for all the help!

Comments on cloaks: I think my biggest issue with the cloaks is that they pinch at the waist. Cloaks never pinch at the waist save for perhaps a fraction of a second when the wind lets up and they collapse in on themselves a bit, but even then it's not very much. Either the whole cloak is moved in a specific direction by wind or figure action, or it's hanging straight down off the shoulders, but it's "ground footprint" should never be smaller than the widest part of the model that it hangs off of. If you have them belted on the other side... then that's different, but if they're hanging loose in the wind they should billow out from just below the shoulders downward.

Painboy looks brilliant btw, no crits there

Good luck on the red and the 'hump', and keep at it!

Right - thanks everyone for your continued comments!

I think I'll take consensus that the Painboy is fine and resist spoiling him.

@Gitsplitta: The are tailored? (Ork tailoring - yeah right...) I think I'll be adding belts/harnesses to the Nob and Meganob to deal with other issues - hopefully this will deal with yours as well...

I'm obviously going to have to do a *lot* more research next time - when I'm not time constrained...

@Imperial Monkey: Not enough base coated, not enough time to clear with Da Boss. I appreciate the offer, but I think its going to have to wait another couple of weekas (more time for you to paint!)

Right - obligatory WIP of Trukk. I've realised now I only really need to concentrate on the Trukk body itself - that is the only thing that I don't have space for three of on the plane. The rest (wheels - red paint job!, driver, gunner, boarding plank and reinforced ram) are all detachable and smaller and should fit in my army case without issues...

Bed or cloaks? Decisions decisions...

Well, in light of some last modifications to the meganob, I decided to change the plan a little and, rather than "finish" the Trukks, start on Deffkopta II whilst keeping an eye out for a suitable exhaust for the meganob.

Long story short - I now have a lot of Deffkopta pieces on my desk, nothing resembling an *actual* Deffkopta, and still no exhaust on the Meganob...

I think if I'd just put together a standard Deffkopta, a single night would have done it. Why can't I do anything standard?

Basically, the clear idea in my head met some logistical issues (mainly keeping the thing regular Deffkopta sized - no supa koptas here!)

Oh well...

I have to complete painting the first Trukk chassis to a standard I can live with (base coats only) tonight...

For the Meganob cloak....maybe an extra piece of cloth like a collar. I've seen long coats that have an extra piece of cloth that covers the shoulders. Think old western style.

If you have some plastic tube, an exhaust is easy to make; check out my warboss's PK and burnagrots for a few examples.

And also: why no supakopta? They ether turboboost and charge first turn, or outflank in my army, so size isn't really an issue. Make it big and threatening, and hope people will ignore your important stuff

Good luck on the truck!

@SoloFalcon1138: Thanks!

@Artsoldier35: I'm just having trouble visualising it - links to (or actual) pics? I will re-address this issue on later Nobz/Meganobz when timing is not an issue...

@ComissarKhaine: Yeah I know. But if I can use an existing piece it is faster. I'll save the kustom build for later (and my Avatar inspired Deffkopta...) I'm going to look at the Trukk engine and Warbike exhausts tonight, as well as the possibility of cutting something down to size. There are two reasons against a supakopta. 1) It *might* survive a turn, in which case it might matter 2) (and most importantly) - it needs to fit in my army case! The Avatar Deffkopta is going to be pushing it size-wise anyway - I don't think I will be able to make a larger Deffkopta without breaking point 2 above. The configuration doesn't lend itself to small (as I am rapidly finding out). I have no doubt it will look as awesome as my Apache Deffkopta once finished though... maybe almost as good as your supakopta! (one can dream...)

Trukks x2, Meganob, Nob, Painboy - Tuesday
Deffkoptas x 2 - Wednesday

Didn't work on my Trukks at all this week . Pretty much completed Meganob, Nob and Painboy thanks to all the help from DakkaDakka . Started 2nd Deffkopta, but a long way still to go . Did enough painting on the first Trukk's chassis to be happy - though plenty more still to be done on there post Crucible. Still a lot to paint to hopefully the same standard next week...

Looking good, although I would suggest you put the GS on a little thinner, and try to get some more folds into the cloth, it is missing a touch of realism there. That being said, it's a bitch until you get the hang of it, but once you do its much easier after that.

I like what you did to the meganob's cloak. The chains are a nice touch, too, but I think the meganob could use a little bit more chain, somewhere else on the modle. Perhaps helping keep one of his arms up (chain from wrist to shoulder) or something. The nob's back looks very nice.

The trukks look good too. That red has a nice deep dirty look to it that goes very well with the metallic.

@MajorTom11: Noted for the next one!

@Gitsplitta, @CommissarKhaine: Thanks. I did some more work on the Deffkopta Thursday night (Friday morning?) - but its still in pieces. Unfortunately, my first attempt at the propeller rings you can see in that pic aren't going to make it. The original blade attachment has been replaced with the Killa Kan socket for the Buzzsaw arm (the engine block in the picture will sit behind, wide, with new propeller rings and blades to either side.) I've also completed most of the Megablasta attachment on the front, though in hindsight I probably should have just magnetised it rather than using the Deff Dread arm attachment... Still have to figure out the top assembly (to hold engine and blades) as well as tail and wings (front and rear). Don't know if all that builds the picture better for you or not - or is what you are thinking. I'm still not sure if it will even all come together properly - it may turn out a little top heavy - especially if the Buzzsaw arm is attached...

@The Good Green: Thanks. Don't think he's going to get more chain - maybe if my Trukks get finished up on Monday, or I get inspired. You never know... And I just don't think you can go wrong with red and metallic on Orks!

@CommissarKhaine: Yes - you'll have to wait for pics! Thursday at this rate...

Ok, so my first task is to get those Trukks finished. I optimistically hoped I could complete them last night, but it wasn't to be. Still - I didn't stay up to some crazy time - which will happen tonight if they aren't finished!

Big Mek's Trukk - Now with armour plates and cleaned up boarding plank...

I think the plates need some more work (glyphs, damage), but as I won't be taking them on Saturday, the main thing is that I have the attachment in place. I can work on them more later now... (and yes, there is another set on the other side...)

Nobz Trukk - Armour plates finished, progress on back, cleaned up last boarding plank...

Again - I'm planning to do extra detail on the armour plates, but this can be left until later - the main thing is they now fit snugly and are magnetised. I have been fretting over how to do the Red Paint Job (as I don't have another set of Half Trakk wheels, nor am I planning on getting any!) - How's this for an idea - over large exhausts, upright, red (of course!) in the corners behind the driver and gunner? Sort of actual truck like. I still want to do more detail in the back - I had originally thought to do an Orky display and weapon rack - similiar to inside a Rhino - these would be on the back sides...

Oh, and grot riggers - still need to do grot riggers on both...

I continue to be optimistic I can get this finished tonight...

@Gitsplitta, moonshine: Thanks as always. Appreciate the support.

@CommissarKhaine: How do I remove the graffiti when I *don't* take RPJ??? I mean, in that case, the fact the engine will be painted red (a la Trukk 1) would be enough. Having said that, I have been thinking (along the lines of the super exhausts) of stringing a sign across them, which would provide an opportunity for a suitable banner. I guess the other option is to have magnetised graffiti plates for the sides - I just figured they wouldn't be substantial enough...

Only a few more hours before I get stuck in again...

Deffkopta II is not going to make it. It is just not possible. Maybe for Silver Sorcerer. Maybe you'll get a WIP shot tonight, maybe Monday - if you're good.

Tonight is effectively my last night. Everything in Orkhide shade has been spray gunned (much more successfully this time around - I must be getting the hang of it...) Everything in Black has been spray canned. I still need to do the Iyanden spray gunning of the Nob Trukk and Meganob first thing tonight, and then whatever detail gets done is done.

Its nowhere near as complete as I would have liked. It is all together and with base colours though (Deffkopta II excepted - a grey plastic standin will have to suffice ).

However, I am in good form for Silver Sorcerer. Pretty much all I have to do between now and then is paint! (and Deffkopta II of course...) Will also be able to finally arrange that game with Imperial Monkey

No. I may try and do an update tonight as some progress has been made, however slight. Work and having a new kitchen/boiler fitted have cut into painting time. I've got a lot left to do for Silver Sorcerer... including working out what the heck is going into my army! I've got two options that I can't decide between, so at this point I may have to go for the one with fewer models as I'm off to Austria for two weeks with work shortly *argh!*. Time is slipping away!

Quick update - The Partick Crucible was an excellent day. This is only my first "tournament" - so I guess it will become the benchmark for me for others The venue was adequate. The biggest issue? Time. An hour and a half per 1000pt game. Two of my four games only went to turn three! I placed 4th (of 12).

And we got to extract some "gin seed" for da cause too - what more could I ask for?

I'll write up a separate report of the day and all four battles. They won't have pics (no time to take them!), and will be a bit sketchier than my others, but hopefully still as enjoyable to read as they were to play.

Next - Silver Sorcerer!

@The Good Green & lukie117: Thanks!

Well, this is just a quick update - been concentrating on sane hours and paint this week. I'll let the pictures and captions do the talking:

Big Mek

Applied a Thraka Green Wash to the skin - it now needs re-highlighting, but has also lost the - chalkiness? - that was bothering me before. Ready for attempt two . I've also completed the red highlighting and added spots for scratches. I'll eventually apply a Baal Red Wash as a glaze, hopefully to make it all less "orange". I've started cleaning up where the metal around the red is going to be too with black - only the bottom left arm (looking at the picture) is complete so far... Oh, and I've added Calthan Brown to the robes after a Devlan Mud Wash didn't quite do the miracle effect I was after - not that you can really see this in this pic.

Boyz & Work Space

Have applied the second coat of Red, so now it is not "patchy". Put a brown coat on the Nobz robes and Painboy. Slowly doing clothes and armour in Dark Angels Green. There are 12 Boyz, 2 Nobz, Meganob and Painboy to do here - not to mention the Trukk! - which along with Deffwing II hasn't had any attention this week.

Now THAT's what I'm talking about!!

Great job Arakasi.... really creative, solid structurally (but not too solid), fun... perfectly orky. What are the plastic rings made from? (and don't say "plastic")

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/07/12 22:04:20

Post by: Arakasi

Blood, sweat and tears? My initial attempts (which you might see in the background of previous WIP photos) - were thin (1/2mm) plasticard strips wrapped around and glued about 3 layers thick. Couldn't get good circles though (even by Ork standards). These ones are built up of three layers of plasticard - a 1mm base (which actually joins everything else together) and then two layers of 2mm - the first providing the propeller mount points. I used a GW spray gun jar to draw the circles and then a lot of pain and anguish cutting them out with a hobby knife, steel ruler and pliers. Actually, this was driving me mad leading up to Crucible. But coming back to it I had more luck - scoring small parts to be removed and then breaking off with pliers - followed by cleanup. Still a lot more work to do though....

You should get a real jeweler's saw and a bench pin... would make that operation (and many others) quite simple for a pretty low cost. I can make specific rec's if you're interested. It's a standard tool on my bench & I use it for things far beyond gaming. Handy for anything that needs a precision cut.

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/07/12 22:22:59

Post by: Arakasi

Rec away! I hadn't really thought about it past "hmmm, my GW saw is too big to get in there..." - and didn't really have the time to think about it seriously before. (Part of the original frustration was jut not realising how blunt my hobby knife was!) Now, different story - though in this case, most of the hard work has already been done... Of course, the advantage of Orks is the rough cut result will actually look more Orky

Looking good.
Those rings look a bit sturdier than the wrap-around strips you were experimenting with before (from what I could make out anyway) and the whole thing's come together nicely. Been toying with the idea of enclosed rotors for some of my koptas, if I go ahead with any of those designs I'll use a similar method for the ring.

This is a company I've ordered from for many years, very reliable and will sell to the general public (they're a jeweler's supply company).

These are my suggestions but dig around and use the search function to take a look-see at what they have...

Saw frame: (even the good ones are cheap)
http://www.riogrande.com/MemberArea/ProductPage.aspx?assetname=110041&page=GRID&free_text|1278971178827=jeweler's+saw

Saw blades: (the expensive part... but they come in large quantities because if you're using the professionally you'll go through them quickly) I'll have to check on size... for metal I use 1/0 or 2/0... think you'd want larger (1 or 2) for plastic or the blade will get fouled too quickly. When I get back to my bench I'll do some checking. Maybe there is one size that will work well for both (I don't pay much attention, I just cut)
http://www.riogrande.com/MemberArea/ProductPage.aspx?assetName=110098&page=GRID&free_text|1278971317796=Rio+Saw+Blades

Lastly the bench pin: You can spend an extra $10 an get a little anvil topped clamp to attach it to your bench, or you can use a C-clamp if you already have one. I cut my own notches in mine, but for an extra $2 you can get a pre-notched one.
http://www.riogrande.com/MemberArea/ProductPage.aspx?assetname=110028&page=GRID&free_text|1278971383995=bench+pin

If you get nothing else... get the pin. I use it to support my work or hands on nearly everything I work on... modeling or painting. Of course I'm older and shakier than I used to be.

Total < $40, but you won't need to buy new blades... well, ever (you get 144) unless you want a different size. Unfortunately they didn't have assortments of the cheaper blades like they used to. Though they just might be out of stock.

Cool! My only gripe would be the exhausts; I feel they should be facing backwards instead of sideways, but that's a minior nitpick. The attachment of the buzzsaw is pretty cool, and the two rotors look great; will you be adding some structural support between the tail and the back of the seat? It looks a tad empty right now.

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/07/13 10:25:39

Post by: Arakasi

@everyone: Thanks!

@monkeytroll: I'll keep a look out for your enclosed rotor koptas... Yes, the new rings are sturdier too!

@Rose_Mountainz: I'm a bit concerned the buzzsaw arm is a bit overpowering - I may remove the articulated joint at the wrist before I am done - but I'll wait until more of the Deffkopta is completed to get a better idea of relative size...

@Gitsplitta: I will digest all of that later

@CommissarKhaine: I chose the engines and exhausts for the best fit. The orientation for the width and also because of the lack of detail on the sides - didn't need it obscuring/getting in the way of the rotors. That being said, I didn't give the exhausts much thought other than it didn't look wrong in their original orientation. I could chop them off and re-orient them to face backwards. I think I'll keep this in the back of my mind for now - other details still to be added may change my mind again, and I don't want to be endlessly reorientating them! The space behind the seat is currently deliberately spartan - as this is where the wings with Rokkit and Big Bomb mounts are going Might work on these tonight...

I like the kopta design, but I feel the missiles look a bit thin when viewed from the front. Most real-life attack helicopters have their missiles groupedin packs of four or more, and the two rokkts beneath each other look a bit... 'light' IMO. The kMB on the other had, I like a lot. I love how you made the hood look like the gun cowling. Nice work!

Under the cold hard light of day and without sleep deprivation I... have to agree

My original plan was to put the whole Deffkopta four pack under each wing, which I thought would match the beefiness of the conversion. However, there isn't enough room. Hence there wasn't enough room to lie them flat as per my Apache Deffkopta - and anyway, I'd already done a set like that! So I went with upright... I think it looks too beefy (the Rokkit housing) and to thin (as you point out) at the same time. I've thought about removing the Rokkit housing to have them lie horizontal - but it seems a lot of work and I'm still not convinced. I think my main issue is that I've been hung up on re-using the Deffkopta Rokkits. A custom four pack, made up of thinner, longer Rokkits would probably be my best bet. Thoughts? It's at times like these I wish I was the sort of person to just say "it's good enough!"

The KMB uses the Deff Dread mount to slot in place - no magnets! - though I had thought afterwards that magnetising would have been easier. But yes, it does result in the deliberate cowling effect. Still thinking about how to cover the front when the KMB is not in play.

I'll leave the Rokkits for now - need to do the front Big Shoota wings and think about the front minus KMB - maybe one of the Killa Kan or Deff Dread face plates. After that I'll be near complete and better able to judge what does and doesn't need tweaking.

Thanks again for everyone's input - keep it coming!

Sorry to be the one messing up your mind - let me try and help out: how about having the rokkit pakket 'wrapped' around the wing: four rokkits in a two-by-two configuration, with an opening in the middle where they slot into the wing? You could have the outer rokkits next to the wing, and the two inner ones slotting over. If you have any IG players near you (endtransmisison plays guard, right?), try and scrounge 8 rockits from the HW teams - few guard players use them anyway.

It's at times like these I wish I was the sort of person to just say "it's good enough!"

Wouldn't suit you mate; you have a brilliant army, it would a shame to not go all-out on it. besides, that's what's so nice about dakka: we're here to support you/ pester you when the going gets tough ; I know it pushes me to that little bit extra too!

As for the front: a grill from a truck might do the truck? I use the daemonic speaker from the defiler with the face bits shaved away on my supadeffkopta.

And: no magnets on the KMB? I'm impressed!

I'm not sure I've got 8 rockets, but I certainly have some spares, 6 I think, laying around you can have if you want. I still have all the paints you ordered months ago too...

Let my start out by saying that I like Khane's suggestion... but I have an alternate I'll throw out just for the heck of it. You could remove one of the 4 rockets from the deffkopta rocket group and mount the remaining three against the wing in an inverted pyramid. I'm pretty sure there are modern missile/rocket packs that have this same type of configuration. I'm not sure if the current kopta rockets will allow this type of conversion, but that way you'll get the substance you're looking for without being overly massive.

@comisarmilo: Thanks!

@HadoukenAvenger: This one has been on the cards a while now - and I am actually using a picture of that model (and a clip from the film) as reference. Oh, and thanks!

@endtransmission: Two votes for changing the exhausts - I will definately have this on my list of things to check/tweak. I don't think re-orientating them will be an issue - just cut at base, swivel and re-glue... How big are those rockets? Can I get a pic - with something for size reference? I have resigned to getting those paints when we go to Silver Sorcerer...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Not really going for CommissarKhaine's - it's diverting too much from the Scorpion load out (for my tastes, currently - I've been known to change my mind...). Gitsplitta's is more interesting - but I don't think it solves my space issue - unless I put the pyramid right side up - ie one on top and two beneath... more thought needed methinks! Still leaning towards my custom built Rokkits in a four pack arrangement - waiting on pics from endtransmission for inspiration (and whether I need to get some IG rockets, or just build my own - starting to think there is very little actual Deffkopta model in this Deffkopta...)

CommissarKhaine wrote:...As for the front: a grill from a truck might do the truck?

The IG rockets are quite long, so you may be better off just cutting 4 lengths of plastic tube and bundling those together for the under-wing rocket tubes (obviously shoving something down them so you can't see that there's no rocket in it!)

This would give you something akin to this : http://image.shutterstock.com/display_pic_with_logo/249/249,1172863503,1/stock-photo--tube-rocket-launcher-on-a-military-helicopter-2792615.jpg
It would certainly be more in keeping with the Scorpion than trying to bundle up big rokits under each wing

Then go for it- endtransmission's pic looks like a great start! You could always make the tips out of gs or cocktails stick, and adding fins isn't all that hard if you want to have some of the rokkit visible. It'll require neatness mainly, so get ready for some more sleep deprivation

Think endtransmission has it with the tubes as rokkit-pods, you can then find a suitable size tube to resolve space issues, or how about the type of rocket-pod you get in many aircraft kits - smaller version of the valk's pods. Or maybe mount a single bigbomm in a vertical position behind the seat, gives you a bit more space under the wings?

This was what I had in mind, as it will allow me to pretty much mimic the Scorpion loadout (sorry monkeytroll, this is the main reason for not moving the Big Bombs behind the seat). I will be relying on Orky engineering to cover any neatness issues... At this point, I think it may be the next thing I work on - as it seems to be the most glaringly obvious issue at the moment... Sooooo many comments!

@monkeytroll: I see it! (the "not a bionic head"). No, the pilot is tucked away underneath for his 4+ save . I'll do a pic tonight with the KMB out - probably after I finish the front - one of the Killa Kan face plates looks like it will be ideal... I'll add "ammo-feeders" to my list of tweaks to address - thanks for that!

@Artsoldier35: Thanks. There are only 2 though (the middle one is the KMB)

@CommissarKhaine: Well, they need to be twin linked Obviously when fielded the armaments will be less (ie legal) - but I did notice from doing Deffkopta I and the Trukks that having space to add all options at once a) Looks really cool for display purposes and b) results in less missing bits! No cool opportunities missed - I don't think I could limit myself to two Deffkoptas, they have so much conversion potential! (Though it may be a while before I get to #3, other priorities required to move up to 1500pts...)

@The Good Green, slann, Gitsplitta, Northen: Thanks again!

So tonight is my last opportunity for this week. Don't think I'll get this finished this week, but I am happy with the progress. I should probably get back to painting next week... (da boyz don't paint demselves!)

And the winner of "Pin da Rokkit on da Deffkopta" is...

Gitsplitta! Thanks to everyone for playing!

I remembered I had the extra metal Rokkit bitz from GW today and thought the "fireworks" pack might be suitable, even though I only have one. Turns out it was too small (two together may have done it, but then I'd need four!) So then I got to thinking and found *all* of my Rokkits. Whatdaya know? Da Killa Kan Rokkits come in a handy pyramid shape - and - low an behold - I think they look excellent! But I only have one set, and I need two... Hmmm... Da Deff Dread Rokkits look about right, but in two sets of two. A bit o surgery and voila! Two sets of three pyramid Rokkits. Just add magnets and, well, you see the picture above!

Good thing I don't plan on building a Killa Kan or Deff Dread soon. Still, I only bought those packs for the bitz - and its paying off handsomely. They could just as easily be re-marketed as bitz packs I reckon. Anyway, I digress...

And for monkeytroll - the pics above are minus the KMB - and plus my replacement front. Also pleased with how this turned out.

I have little doubt I will be just as pleased in the morning. CommissarKhaine - do your worst! (I was right in my original assumption that this was going to end up, while not a Megakopta like yours, still a very beefy Deffkopta...)

@endtransmission: No comment, or even better - have you finished your Guard yet?

@Artsoldier35: NP - I still agree it looks good. Actually, with the reinforcements to the front above, the KMB now looks even better - it lines up with the Big Shootas rather than looking a bit droopy...

Until next week (for modelling/painting updates)

That a challenge kid?

Seriously, I like the model a lot! The beefier rokkits look great, and the coverplate for the KMB looks like it was made to fit there. Now turn those exhausts to the rear and I'll have nothing left to coment about

I like the beefier look on deffkoptas, tbh. while I agree it gives a (minor) gaming disadvantage, the added coolness more then makes up for it.

@Gitsplitta: It should be - it was your idea

@monkeytroll: The front-piece slots in like the KMB. I was originally concerned I would have to magnetise it - my magnets are starting to run low again, and I didn't really want to be using up the weapon mounting points on a face plate. However, after butchering the two sets of Deff Dread Rokkits, I was left with two spare weapon mount points - so it seemed like a good idea!

@The Good Green: You should, I highly reccomend it!

@moonshine: I'm currently running two Deffkoptas with Rokkits and Buzzsaws, so I just remove the Big Shootas, KMBs and Big Bombs (magnetised!) when playing. Who knows when I might be short on points, wanting to add a cheap Deffkopta for wound allocation, a new Ork Codex release makes Big Shootas da best etc etc. Options! I have options!

@IHEARTLARGEBLASTTEMPLATES: I know I am doing something right (or wrong...) when I don't seem to offend DA players . Plus it adds a bit extra to games against them!

@CommissarKhaine: Kid? Unless the age in your profile is incorrect, I'm older than you sir! Are you *still* on about the exhausts? Once again I am slowly coming around to your way of thinking. Now that most of the Deffkopta is in place, it has a certain symmetry (What? Orks and symmetry? Da Big Mek musta ODed on his "gin seed" and "progoid lands"...) that is making the exhausts more obviously at odds with it. They will be rotated to the rear in due course - patience! My main restriction on Deffkopta size is what will fit in my case Actually, that isn't entirely true. The aim was to keep it the same size as the current model - well if you considered the current model to be the width of its rotors. The Apache Deffkopta succeeded at this easily. This one - well - there was an awful lot to try to fit into that very small space... It is a sad thing, given all of the effort (and still to paint!) that they don't tend to last on the battlefield very long

@BlutEisenRegel: Thanks!

For what it's worth, I'll chime in with Khane... I think the kopta would be best served with rearward facing exhaust. BUT..... it's your model, it's beautiful as it is. Your call entirely.

@moonshine: Thanks again!

@Brother Bartius: Not really more as such - this was the one I didn't finish in time for Crucible (and instead just had my snap together stand in...). There will be more *eventually*, but no time in the near future - other projects (still Da Dark Angelz! Don't worry!) need my attention...

Oops, didn't see your age; I'm the old guy at our FLGS, so I naturally assume all other gamers are younger (and therefore inferior ). The exhaust going back will simply look more 'natural' IMO; while orks may not care about aesthetics, they care about crude efficiency. I'll be looking forward to seeing my final nitpick with this brilliant model disappear.

I hear you about size; I've found out that my army is pretty hard to transport, but that's the price you pay for a cool looking lot I gues .

As for lasting long: I tend to be amazed at their survivability sometimes; if two units have to shoot it, I'm happy

Hey Arakasi! When we do our "marine swap" I could do a "bug boy", i.e. an ork in pseudo mantis warrior armor. Would be a fun conversion and I'm already playing around with something similar.

Post by: CommissarKhaine

Looking great Arakasi! The smaller buzzsaw works a treat and I feel changing the dynamics of the exhausts 1) makes more sense and 2) adds to the aerodynamism (if that's even a word) of the kopta. The support struts in the tail add that little extra to make this into a great model. Nice work!

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/07/20 06:52:01

Post by: Arakasi

@Imperial Monkey: Currently convincing Da Boss, looking promising...

@moonshine: Thanks! Dat iz Da Plan!

@monkeytroll, CommissarKhaine: Glad you guys like the smaller buzzsaw - I was a bit worried you wouldn't! Basically I went with it for your reasons mentioned - I didn't want something too huge and lumbering detracting from the front. The back was looking a little empty - hence the support struts!

@Gitsplitta: I've been trying not to think about it too much - what with needing to get the Deffkopta finished. I may not be able to stop myself prior to finishing all painting though (that could take months!) I had thought of that myself though - though I'm supposed to be giving you one of Da Dark Angelz - not a Mantiz Warrior! I guess the first decision is whether the piece is going to be an ornament, an objective or playable - and we can take it from there. Oh, in case it wasn't obvious - it sounds like a great idea!

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/07/20 11:24:58

Post by: Gitsplitta

You misunderstand... You give me one of da dark angles... I make you one of da bug boyz in trade. That way wey we both have a figure we can use. Oh, I'm not in any hurry... Just a random thought I wanted to propose.

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/07/20 12:27:51

Post by: Arakasi

I understood - just didn't articulate it very well

I've been thinking more about it, and if I dedicate a couple of squads, or even a Kompany, to it - then people can trade me Orks done in their SM colours and they can form their own "mobs" Obviously these boys have been dosed with da wrong "gin seed" and "progloid lands" and hence have to stick together for support?

In the meantime (while the numbers are lower) they can be easily identifiable unit "mascots" - ie "da bug boyz mob" - of which da bug boy is one of da boyz...

They'd probably make great Mad Boyz for Da Dark Angelz if GW ever brought them back!

Must finish Deffkopta - so much... possibilities!

@IHEARTLARGEBLASTTEMPLATES: Thanks again!

Small update:

No one picked up (well, commented on) the extra plates on the front from last time - but otherwise all changes were discussed. This time probably the least obvious change is the addition of ammo feeds to the Big Shootas care of a suggestion by monkeytroll. If you look hard in the middle picture you might see it Other options I looked at were too overpowering. Otherwise, the tail sides have now been extended and detail added, as well as detail to the front wings (top only at the moment).

You know you are on the downward slope to finished when the changes take longer for less results...

*** segway ***

For the "Marine" exchange, I'm thinking 7th Kompany is probably a good fit:

7th Kompany (Taktikal)
  • Warboss (Shooty)
  • Kommand Mob - 10x Flashgitz, Painboy
  • 1,2 - 10x Flashgitz, Painboy
  • 3 - 15x Kommandos, 2 Burnas, 2 Big Shootas, 2 Rokkit Launchas, Nob
  • 4 - 15x Burnas, 3 Meks
  • 5 - 30x 'Ard Shootas, Nob, Trukk, 3x Big Shoota, 3x Rokkit Launcha
  • 6,7,8,9,10 - 30x Shootas, Nob, 3x Big Shootas, 3x Rokkit Launchas, Trukk
  • 2x Deff Dreads

  • Good lot of options. Not everything - may have to open up a mob in 8th and 9th if anyone has their heart set on Sluggas or Stormboyz

Of course, Dark Angels players will just be asked to provide objective markers

I'm guessing those plates were spotted by a good few guys, just that we had no useful comments to make on them I think I started to say something, realised it was even more useless than my normal meanderings and deleted. Impressed you got the ammo feeds in there, when I suggested it I was just throwing out some ideas to fill the space used by the KMB, and after you made the front-plate I forgot all about it, but you've done both Like the detailing on the rear fins too.

edit: Can't wait to see your ork/marine segway

@monkeytroll: It makes more sense regarding the space to be filled now that I know you meant where the KMB went! And there I thought you were just a stickler for details... Just goes to show I listen to you guys, and even occasionally remember, huh? (Even if the interpretation is off...)

@Gitsplitta: Will do. I'm excited to finish the Deffkopta so I can make a start... More thought on where to put the exchanged boyz - I'm now thinking a whole Kompany may be a bit much - I think I'll work out specific units in da Reserve Kompanies (7, 8 & 9) - which covers a lot of options, without being excessive. Stay tuned!

@CommissarKhaine: Thanks! (Oh, and if it wasn't clear - I would not be offended if your squished Ork turns out to be one of Da Dark Angelz. In fact, I think I'd be honoured!)

@The Good Green: Thanks! If you mean the FW Warkopta - its a much bigger beast - probably even bigger than CommissarKhaine's megakopta! I find I love it from some angles, and dislike it from others - though it is much improved by having the Kommandos on board.

@Artsoldier35: I'll add you to my list (you are currently third ) - and get in contact with you via PM when I can schedule you in (Gitsplitta is first, and we haven't started yet!)

Tonight's update. The challenge? Spot the difference on da Deffkopta from last night...

I feel the end is in sight! I need to patch in the cables that have been left hanging since I dismantled the original Deffkopta model. Tossing up how many rivets/teef to add, if any. Some GS work to do - though actually quite minimal, and mainly on the Buzzsaw. Maybe a bit on the front, maybe a bit on the back to join two struts at the top... As I said - almost done! Comment now or forever hold your peace!

    @Artsoldier35: No problem.

    @moonshine: Thanks again.

@CommissarKhaine: Waiting with baited breath re wings...

@monkeytroll: No apologies necessary - it all worked out in the end!

Reinforcements on the rings around the kopta blades? That lookslike thekind of fiddly stuff you can spend all evening on. If not, they could use a few rivets, so it seems like an appropriate moment to point that out . Besides that, I'm not spotting any changes nor do I have anything to remark, so I shall hold my peace!

As for the wings: I had to add smaller ones, the big ones didn't fit with the base :(. On the right side: If you want some, I have a set of helmet wings from the HE hero left over

@CommissarKhaine: The reinforcements on the rings around the kopta blades were surprisingly quick and easy to do They are definitely candidate numero uno for rivets...

@moonshine: Great idea! I had planned to do something similar for Ammo runts, Oilers etc - but I hadn't thought of an Attack Squig

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/07/21 23:35:22

Only comment would be rivets on the reinforcements, but that's already been covered so....

Sides seem more logical going by the way you've built it (the way I see it the reinforcement on the rings look a bit like clamps); if you use big rivets, you'll get a nice industrial look as well, always a plus with orks.

Zooming in on the rings (if that's what you're referring to), I'd say top, if only because the physical structure of the sides of the rings don't look like they'd be good candidates for riveting.

Good job man The cabling and rivets finish it off nicely, and it looks cool with any of the load-outs.

Minor point - top view shows a bit of a gap between the exhaust halves, have you tried using Plastic Weld or similar, it does a really good job of hiding stuff like that. Although I've just realised that the top's been of mine for a couple of days now, which may explain why I've not liked spending much time in my workroom last couple of days, and over half the bottles evaporated

I'm not seeing the gap in person, though I can see where they join. If I'd thought it was a problem I would have GSed it with a few other gaps. I'll see what others think...

Plastic weld is a type of liquid glue produced by EMA, sometimes referred to as liquid plastic, there's a few different varieties out there, I found it years ago when trying to fix an old klingon bird of prey which had snapped across the 'neck' part and was impressed by the invisible join it created, and tend to use it for pretty much all my plastic stuff now. It kind of melts the edges together making joins much less noticeable. I use something like revell contacta for the initial join then touch a brush dipped in plastic weld to the join and let capillary action do the rest, creates a very strong bond too. Guess I should have said Very Minor Point as it's not really an issue, was intended more as a converational hint or something(see last edit). I'll put it down to having breathed the fumes from it for the last couple of days making me extra 'nit-picky'. Or maybe just the fact that I used to bang on about the stuff to any modellers I met and haven't done so for a few years

edit: http://www.ema-models.co.uk/products/04303-plastic-weld-cement-ml.html although I've certainly never paid that for it and if that's the going rate then forget it.

edited for tiredness: Also, take anything I post late at night during the week with a pinch of salt, I function better during the early hours at weekends, but not when I've been to work and have to go agian in the morning Same with most of us I expect

@Gitsplitta, CommissarKhaine, moonshine: Thanks! And now the calls for paint begin once again...

@monkeytroll: Thanks for that, I'll look into it. I'd much prefer you comment incoherently or suffering from tiredness than not at all - you never know what I might get out of it (eg Big Shoota ammo lines...)

@CommissarKhaine: Nice idea. I'll think about it. For now, I'm not going to attach anything as I think it a) would be prone to breakage and b) won't fit in my case! I can always make something that "attaches" later. (Actually, all my Trukks have a spot for a future flag pole should I decide I need it...)

Bonus pic - alongside my "inspiration". I really do like how the image on the right came out - even if it doesn't really show of the rotors and perhaps looks a bit too straight

Loving the kopta! Don't worry too much about one rotor being slightly straighter than the other, my stormraven has the same issue with one wing a few mm out. Looked obvious when still plastic and plasticard but once sprayed you can't see it. (only you will ever know!)

Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see it with some paint too, what colours you going for? Black after the Ravenwing I presume?

@monkeytroll: The trick is to look at it as if through the eyes of a Big Mek...

@moonshine: Thanks! That was the idea!

So, not much to report this evening. Basically, modelling is now on hold until I receive my delivery of bits for my "Great Marine... I mean Xenos... Swap" with Gitsplitta. I am looking forward to putting together a Dark Angelz Stormboy Nob for him - I already have some ideas (one action/Wolverine/Thor-ish, one more static/in charge) , but even those will have to wait until I have the necessary parts in my grubby paws... In the meantime, it is full speed ahead painting. Except for tonight, which was full speed ahead cleaning up the workspace (and room) ready for full speed ahead painting...

Daunting huh? I vaguely recall deciding never to paint more than 5 models at a time due to the pain... and here I have... dozens

Once I complete this lot I will officially have more painted models than I ever have had previously! I will also have my first fully painted field-able army.

I wonder how much I can get done before Silver Sorcerer? I will be aiming for table top ready initially, and then work up to the finished product.

Keep the support up - I feel I am going to need it!

Sooo Arakasi.... when I'm working on your "bug boy"... do you want me to post a couple of shots as I progress on your blog? I don't mean take over... just a shot or two of the build and one or two of the painting. I could put it on one of my own blogs, but it would seem most appropriate here as this is where he'll end up. I've got his arms all sorted out by-the-way... the rest should be easy and fairly amusing.

Good luck, Arakasi. I'm painting up full squads of boyz, so I understand your pain. It took me a week just to get the assembly, primer, dark green skin, and lighter green drybrush work done on 3 mobs worth.

Others have advised that you do something like 10-12 of the same model at a time, and once those are done, reward yourself with doing a single model such as a nob, kopta, or vehicle. It helps break up the monotony.

Personally, I'm stubborn, and I'll do the same thing over and over and over (and over) again to get it out of the way, so I can get to the fun part.

Ahh, I see them now Unfortunately using those Mek's eyes means there's a real mess here as a blind mek barges around the place.

Hmm, paint, yes, well, ummm, think I remember someone telling me about that once. Good luck and you have my full support. That does look a daunting task ahead of you, but I do want to see some finished articles, so just relax, don't rush and err, that's about it I'm afraid I would get the servo-grots charging up the prods to help 'encourage' you, but feel if I went that far I might find some 'koptas overhead demanding I get my own brushes out

@Gitsplitta: I was going to post them up on the "Great Marine Swap" thread until someone complained about them not being Marines (and then my backup plan was to start the "Great Xenos Swap") - but feel free to post here too. I'll definitely be putting WIP shots up of your Dark Angelz Stormboy here - as he will be one of da Dark Angelz. I also figure I'll do two (why do one when you can do two for twice the price?) - let you choose one and I'll keep the other Sounds like you are already ahead of me!

@Heffling: Thanks! And that seems fast by my standards! Most likely I'll just go ahead in colours - paint Dark Angels Green until I'm bored, paint Mechrite Red until I'm bored, paint skin until I'm bored. Occasionally I'll touch Deffkoptas, Trukks and/or Characters. I'll get there - but I will be extremely glad once its all over!

@monkeytroll: I'm sure the local Painboy will be able to fix him up good I wouldn't worry too much - you seem further along with yours

    @moonshine: Thanks and me too!

@IHEARTLARGEBLASTTEMPLATES: Unfortunately, no. Except for the driver and gunner, the Nobz Trukk and parts are absent, as is the latest Deffkopta

    @CommissarKhaine: Thanks and yeah, yeah!

@The Good Green: Mostly assembly line paint, or at least until I get to the details. I will probably "model by model" the characters, Deffkoptas and Trukks. Probably end up being some strange mixture of the two - all will be revealed, as it happens!

I think I now have a clear picture in my mind of the Dark Angelz Stormboy Nob I am going to swap with Gitsplitta. On the downside, I think I'll be using more parts from the Assault Marine sprue than the Stormboyz one. On the plus side, if it comes out as planned, it will be awesome! (and I'm definitely making one for me too!) Just waiting on parts to arrive... (no, I'm not trying to distract myself from painting - not yet anyways!)

Looking good...and daunting. I have more to get painted so I just leave them in the Case so I don't have them all staring me down. I bring out just the pieces I'm working on. At the present, it's four Burnas but I still have over 30 boys, a handful of NOBZ, 2 trukks, two BWs, and four Deffkoptas.

@Artsoldier35: Thanks for... sharing the pain...

Nothing to see tonight. I'd take a photo, but I'm sure you wouldn't be able to see the last three boyz Dark Angels Green uniforms, or the black touch up to the Trukk crews feet...

On the plus side, the Avatar Deffkopta is undercoated - and I've finished another spray can of Chaos Black... Just when I put an order in too... I'll just have to get some more stuff! Not that I need to until I get my last order...

8 of da boyz are joining 4th Kompany, 6th Mob (plus the Nob), the other 4 are joining 5th Kompany, 5th Mob. I'm going to be making a greater effort to add Kompany and Mob markings in order to tell them apart. I'm playing with the idea of whether to also paint each mobs wraps and bands similarly for extra coordination / identification on the battle field - green, red or white - or whether to group all the ones with loin cloths... Decisions decisions...

    Over and out!

I officially do not want to see any more Mechrite Red this week!

I'm sure after tomorrow evening I'll be adding green to the above statement as well...

Ordered parts for Gitsplitta trade last Sunday. Order is still waiting on stock at Wayland. On the upside - nothing better to do than paint. On the downside - itching to get started!

    Post by: monkeytroll

Keep at it, it'll be worth it in the end
Like the idea of using the wraps/bands for mob idea more than the grouping of loincloths etc. Orks all deciding to wear loincloths or bands on their right wrist doesn't feel quite right as opposed to "we's the bestest mob so we's gonna wear da red bits".

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/07/29 22:04:33

    Post by: Arakasi

In keeping with Da Dark Angelz theme - white would be highest ranked, followed by red then green. But I keep changing my mind on this, and no doubt will do so again before I get around to immortalising it in paint... Previous boyz had bands in red and wraps and loin cloths in white. I am planning to incorporate Kompany and Mob markings more prominently this time around, which may negate the need to match up the colours of assorted bling... More discussion, thought and progress needed methinks!

On an update note, as expected, Orkhide Shade has been added to my list of "can't stand anymore" for this week. And it was all basically touch up work too... doh! Progress is progress I guess

Also as usual, no more progress updates now until Monday night. Discussions are free to continue as always - though there appears to be markedly less this week... I may have to start going days without updates!

So what's the current plan for the kompany/mob markings? Tattoos, markings on cloth/armour/backplates, or some other? I still like the idea of same coloured wraps etc, but that's probably just me reminiscing on my old genestealer cult As you pointed out way back, there's room for a bit of difference s they are still Orks, even if heavily influenced by the DA.

Well, the boyz already have tattoos which I will keep - Mob designation (ie Taktikal, Assault, etc) in red on their right shoulder with Mob number in white over the top in Roman numerals, Blood Axe symbol in white on their left shoulder. The main issue is finding a spot for the Kompany designation - most boyz just don't come with the appropriate knee pad! Some have backplates which I can use, others shoulder pads, and if all else fails, I may split it across the metal plates across the top of the shoulder straps... I may be able to vary it up and use shoulder pads for actual Mob designation, number and Blood Axe symbol (if I have enough spaces for other markings...), or perhaps I can do some of the loin cloths in Kompany markings - there's a thought... (though difficult to see!)

Heffling wrote:Space Marine shoulder pads! "Dey goin unna cova!

There is at least one boy with a Dark Angels shoulder pad, and the Apache Deffkopta Kustom Megablasta arm has one too. I was going to save it more for Nobz and 'Ard Boyz...

    So - update...

A big thanks goes out to Imperial Monkey for two awesome, if somewhat one-sided, games of 40K on Sunday. We will be posting up joint battle reports in due course...

Started first level of green (skin) highlighting this evening. This is going to be tedious... I mean fun!

According to Wayland, my order for my swap with Gitsplitta arrives tomorrow (new speed record!) - so at least I'll have something to reward myself with as I continue the green...

And couldn't help but think of you as I just came across a background thread discussing the watchers in the dark, and it was suggested they were grots in disguise

@Imperial Monkey: I look forward to a rematch to see what you are *really* capable of. Sometime. When our schedules (and the planets) align again... Images are up in my gallery. Still working on first draft of first battle... Orks to paint you know!

@monkeytroll: Watchers would be very small grotz? Snotlings perhaps? I still plan to do my Grot assistants as Watchers though

    Small update:
5 more boyz have their first highlight of green - you know - the one that almost covers the entire previous layer - grrrr.... Only 13 more to go. I keep telling myself it will get faster as each layer covers less - but I still need to get through the first!

Parts arrived for my swap with Gitsplitta. Managed to hold off diving in until I had some more pain on the boyz. Willpower! Still in the "choosing which pieces I am going to loot/use" stage. So far, the only departure from my original idea is that I will be using a full Jump Pack each. (I originally planned to cobble half a Jump Pack to a Rokkit Pack - but the size difference would make that look too imbalanced, even for Orks!) However, it has solved another potential issue I was concerned about... Stay tuned!

Some progress - 1st layer of green (well, on top of base)

These guys are now at the same level (photos from Wednesday...)

And da rest... red to be touched up later...

Managed to work out how to fit three Trukks in my Battle Foam case, which means I can carry my 1000pts in one case, not two. Which means I can cart 1000pts up to Scotland and back on the weekend on short notice. Which means, thanks to da Boss' permission, I can play this week-end! Yay!

    Battlefoam - protecting your... cat?

Actually, there is still a lot of room in that case - so I've added my sluggas as make-shift Kommandos - throw in another Deffkopta and we're up to 1250pts - though only half of that extra 250 is complete, the rest is bare.

Got my pieces together for da Stormboyz Nob for my swap with Gitsplitta - enough for two as I figure I'll want one too!

I have got the basics of one backpack done - but images of that next week...

now i know that seems used a ton, but what i do is get termie legs (mine come from the DA upgrade set that comes with two suchthings!!!) and cut the top so it has a flat top instead of a curved one. then i get an ork body, (havent tried nob bodies, just ork bodies) and cut the bottom of their body so it is flat as well. glue the two together and glue a shoulder pad along the back torso to hide the rest of the ork part that is suppose to attach to ork legs, and you have a meganob! i then glue on various ork parts. i can show you a pic when i get some.

    hope that made sense.

    i love your models thou!

Another layer of green down, another step closer to insanity! Still - they are starting to look like proper Orks now. One more layer to do. I think I'll start with the Nobz and make sure it is worth doing to the boyz (they could probably survive without it...)

    @Everyone (re Stormboy Nob): Thanks!

No time to work on him (them) tonight - need sleep - so a bit more info for you all instead:
  • Only the Marine and Rokkit Pack are together/cleaned up. The rest is just blu-tack, or in the case of the Nob/Marine to base - gravity
  • The Rokkit Pack is actually for his twin, however the pieces should mostly mix and match - so I will confirm the final configuration with Gitsplitta when it comes to that, except
  • The twin has his arms reversed, and is kneeling on the opposite knee
  • I thought about using a larger base, but the current one is standard - and Nobz hardly fit on them anyway. He's not attached to the base yet - so its Gitsplitta's call (for his) - however
  • Marines don't like to lay flat, and this way his arms and legs can hang over the sides.
  • The Marine has had his back and backside removed just behind the arm connections in order to lie flatter
  • The Power Klaw arm is made up from a Boyz or Warbiker (depending on which twin) Power Klaw and a Big Choppa arm.
  • One Nob leg has been repositioned, the other has been replaced with an AOBR leg
  • The orientation of the Marine is not what I first envisaged (the Nob was originally over him - looked like he was kneeing him in the groin)
  • There is still a major and minor addition (in addition to shoulder pads!) yet to come. If you thought it looked awesome now, I hope to blow your mind further later!

  • Miss Dee wrote:Gonna do one doing a Darth Vader lifting a Marine?

Hmmm - great idea - will keep that one in the back of my mind!

@Sageheart: Thanks for that. I have thought about it, but haven't attempted it yet. endtransmission, who is responsible for most of my completed Nobz, did something similar for one of them - check out the one with the winged helmet (the one everyone loves!). Looking forward to your pic(s)!

Funny guys, very funny... Touched up the clothing/armour. Next week - highlighting (more green).

I should probably do their bases before Silver Sorcerer... I can then add brown to my list of hated colours (alongside red and green...)

Oh - and I forgot - more green when I get to the Trukks

I'm actually looking forward to da Deffwing Trukk and Deffkoptas - black and white - who'd of thought they'd be more interesting?

That is the idea. It is already leaps and bounds ahead of my younger days efforts - which had many more models, less conversions and even less paint.

I'll be able to build it up at a slower, more considered pace after this too.

I don't even need to buy more models at this point - in my drive for bulk discounts and bitz I still have more unassembled boyz than assembled (with or without paint). From memory, I should have 70 boyz (30ish assembled), 10 lootas/burnas, 12 warbikes (1 assembled), 4 trukks (3 assembled), 5 meganobz (1 assembled), 20 grotz - not to mention 2-3 AOBR sets of Orks...

Looking forward to Looted Wagons and Battlewagons too - but they will need more bitz

@Miss Dee: Definitely on the cards. The trick is in making it suitably Orky...

@Gitsplitta: If it goes together faster than the last one, you will finish well ahead of me! I haven't had a chance to make any more progress (well, other than thinking) on yours this week. Next week may be light on as well as I try to get as much painting done before Silver Sorcerer. After that I should be able to dedicate the required amount of time. Your progress should help to inspire me though Not like I need sleep or anything. Looking forward to starting my own Deffwotch!

@Gitsplitta: Thanks! On the upside it meant we had tie for two games...

@endtransmission: Are your ill fated Psyker Battle Squad making it to Silver Sorcerer?

Right, so its mainly been paint. After much green last week, I started with some more green - tidying up the clothing/armour. Then onto red - tidying that up. Then brown on the bases. That was this week up to yesterday. Today I started cleaning up the black. 3.5 miniatures later, and, well - thats not getting completed before Silver Sorcerer! Tomorrow night (and perhaps Friday morning) are my last chances to paint - I think the couple of patches of white undercoat on the Painboy and perhaps a few details on the Nob Trukk are in order - but thats probably about as far as it will get before Silver Sorcerer. Looking good - but *so* far still to go...

Meanwhile - also working on Gitsplitta's Nob trade and twin - updates below. (Making sure to spend time painting *first*. Modelling is the reward, *sigh*. Still up too late... hope I can stay awake this weekend!)

Only the heads are now blu-tacked. The rest comes apart in four parts - Base, Space Marine corpse, Nob body and Rokkit Pack/Shoulder pads - for ease of painting hopefully... A bit more progress, but mostly the second one. Why make one when you can make two in twice the time?

Hmmm... Wayland have a discount voucher this week... I may have picked up a Predator and Battlewagon...

Like the look, you've really made them look bulky! I'd consider changing the position of the kopta blades a tad making them look more like wings. Right now, I don,'t really see a use for them.

    @alexwars1: Thanks!

@CommissarKhaine: They are Nobz after all - they are bulky by default. And need extra big Rokkit packs to keep'em airborne! The reason the Kopta blades look useless/not like wings is because they aren't finished yet Think humerus

Hey Arakasi... could I see the back, side and top views of one of those models? The guy I'm making for you is going to have a jump pack too of course, and I'm not sure how I'm going to go about it. I'd like to see how you engineered yours before making a decision on mine.

Still. Leaving them at home makes space for a Valk with twin linked lascannon or a Hellhound variant of some sort... if that makes you feel happier

I think your plan to go back to doing smaller groups is a good idea. It'll give you more chance to look at your awesome looking Nobs. I think the blades look like an interesting back banner alternative

No problem - will do them when I get home in a couple of hours...

Ha! - I thought I was getting a normal Nob to go in a Nobz mob - no problem though, just misunderstood Here I was thinking, you know, I'm really going to have to do 4 Stormboyz at some point to make a legal unit - and now I'm looking at 8! I'll have to see if I can persuade some of my other trades to make the other 4 boyz. Could be hard though, I don't imagine people have Stormboyz just lying around (its not like they come in AOBR). Then again, there does seem to be a lot of Marine Swap specific model purchases going on...

    Hmmm... not really...

My mistake! I can make you a normal nob, no problem. I was thinking that because we were patterning his weapons after one of my vanguard that he'd need the jump pack too. But doing a straight nob would be much easier & faster as the jump pack is a serious conversion.

I'd be happy either way, think about it and let me know what you'd prefer.

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/08/19 15:09:59

    Post by: Arakasi

    Easier +1
Faster -1 - I know you are worried about speed, but I don't think you fully appreciate the absolutely "glacial" pace your Stormboyz Nob is going to progress at. I only hope to make it up with pure awesomeness. Really - take all the time you need! I will be...

Like you (I assume), I doubt I'd field a Stormboyz Nob without a Power Klaw (and Bosspole - you wanted a Bosspole right?). A diversified Nobz squad - well there are a lot more valid options. But really, my preference here is predicated on whether I'd be happy to "counts as" or not - and I'm pretty sure (assumption again) that I'll be happy with what you decide.

Ultimately though, I think rule of cool is going to win out - I want what you envision - and if that works out as a Stormboyz Nob with Big Choppa (or whatever), or regular Nob, or whatever - then so be it. I don't want arbitrary restrictions sabotaging the vision!

    So, in order of preference:
    1) Cool/Your vision
    2) Legal/Playable/Counts as
    3) My Preference(s) as above

I'm sure I could put a Stormboyz Nob in a Nobz mob - he might have words with the Mek about lugging broken bits of junk though
