Post by: Arakasi

@djdutton: Thanks!

Some more progress. I've been taking pictures as I go, but the quality has been poor and I've been having trouble finding time to prepare and post - but here they are at last - better late than never:

Zoom in for huge Ork and Grot skin is complete. Grey is complete. The copious amount of black has been started - the metal is based 3:1 Chaos Black/Fenris Grey while the cloth is based 3:1 Chaos Black/Codex Grey. I've just today added weathering to the black with Fenris Grey, Chaos Black and finally Chainmail as well as Chainmail edges. I'm still to do a black wash - but I'm saving that for after I've highlighted the cloth.

On the plus side, I'm finally starting to get back into some form of rhythm - hope to get back to Da Dark Angelz soon! (Due date for above is next Saturday...)

WIP continues... photo is a bit better - you will need to click through for any detail though I think...

Black material highlighted with 1:1 Chaos Black/Codex Grey. All black shaded with Chaos Black. Looking much better in person - but I am really looking forward to adding the silver, gold, red and other details to bring it to life so to speak! Have an idea for the banner too...

What I can make out is looking very good - but it's hard to make it out at them moment just because it's all sooo dark.

I think the colours really will bring this one to life as you say, and I look forward to seeing what you do with the banner.

Keep it up!

So much orky goodness. Now if it only came with a nougat center. Lets see some more pics with some more paint. That nob will be epic finished.

Thanks guys! Hopefully this post will sort you all out...

Right, WIP:

And as final as it is going to get for today's deadline - not sure which pic is best, maybe it doesn't matter...

While I plan to continue painting, this should pass for today's deadline Not sure if planned painting continuation will happen this week though - I've run out of teef wiv Da Boss regarding time to spend on this...

Doh! I just realised I missed the grot's nails...

Banner looks great, too... If a bit Skaven-y

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/09/20 19:36:48

Post by: Arakasi

@Gitsplitta, Yggdrasil, bigfish, NakedBatBoy, Eckeon: Thanks!

@CommissarKhaine: I'll probably add blood to the Klaw. Da Boss thinks I should add it to the banner too...

@monkeytroll: Not quite finished yet (and not just the nails), but still a record for me!

@Yggdrasil: It's meant to be an "A" (for Arakasi) in Ork teef/tusks - a lot of Ork letter glyphs are similar from memory - perhaps even a bit oriental - which I guess *is* a bit Skaven-y... but then Skaven are sneaky, and Kommandos are sneaky... wait - there is a hint (for those non-DCMs) in the other glyphs on the banner...

Awesome. He looks so dark and bad ass.

Oh and a great idea for a back drop. He is standing outside of a giant storm drain that empties out in a canal or something with a dead guardsmen or ganger at his feet.

Such a fun model. Again awesome.

Didn't read the whole thread, but I read the OP. Any chance of you using fantasy night goblins as "watcherz in'na dark" (that is the little midgets that live in the rock, right)?

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/09/21 06:58:37

Post by: Arakasi

Thanks again schank23. I think any backdrop will be awhile off - I do need to finish Da Dark Angelz! But I'll keep the idea in mind (most likely when I get around to another update post...)

@Sharkvictim: Start at page 50 - there is a *huge* catchup post that covers everything of interest up to that point. I have a box of fantasy Night Gobbos ready to go as Wotchas - but they are so far down the priority list... Thanks for chiming in!

At last! BTW - just received your GMS trade. I'll need to appreciate it more after "work", but, did you send it as two parts or three? (The Deffkopta blades were separate and looked like they were meant to be, but he is also separated at the knee to his base - which looks like it was separate at one stage, but not necessarily supposed to be during transit...)

Ok, maybe that's what I'll do... (start a thread)

Thanks !

So I guessed correctly ?

The glyph-maw means waaaagh, and the glyph-fire means dakka ?

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/09/22 13:42:58

Post by: Anvildude

Jup.

Just the lower teeth means 'grim'- though I actually think the shoota glyph might mean Dakka, and the fire glyph might mean Krak or Bang.

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/09/22 15:47:20

Post by: Arakasi

@Yggdrasil: Yes - you guessed correctly!

@Anvildude: I believe the shoota glyph is actually "Nob" I'd have to reference my Ork Codex to be 100% sure though...

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/09/22 17:41:08

Post by: schank23

The shoota glyph does mean Nob. But there others are all right. And now that the cat is out of the bag. (How the heck he got out baffles me. Tied that thing up nice and tight.)

I' loving it.

Post by: Arakasi

Was the catchup post on page 50 helpful? Like, why did I read pages 1-50 helpful?

Apologies to everyone else for lack of updates - will have to try to rectify that soon...ish... I'd like to say my offer of help to Yggdrasil spun out of control - but it was nothing so dramatic (and I basically pawned that off to someone else - delegation!)

Latest updates are currently in endtransmission's "Endtransmission and Arakasi Learn 3d Modelling" blog - I think the link is in my signature - as I seem to be getting more time to occasionally dally on the laptop at the moment. It is Ork related (starting with a Trukk wheel) - and once I get to the casting, I'm sure the results will turn up here

Meanwhile, I'm still about, poking my nose in here and there

Morgrim slowly came to, registering pain in various spots about his body - coincidentally, or not he thought, focused around where Grimskab was poking around. Morgrim swatted the Painboy away. "Enuf!" As his vision sharpened, he spotted Skarag. "Report!". Skarag jumped to attention. "Vehicles repaired. Boyz patched up. We iz gud ta go Boss!". Morgrim surveyed the immediate area. "Wherez da loot?". Skarag looked down, sheepishly. "Ummm... all loot woz accounted far sar... but... some woz misplaced in da taktikal withdrawl..." Morgrim raised an eyebrow suspiciously, and Skarag hurriedly continued "...but it iz aroun' 'ere... close by... sumwhere... Boss?" Morgrim raised himself up to his full height. "Gavver da ladz, we goz get it now!" "An' da 'umies?" Skarag enquired. "Let dem cum take it off us if dey can! Wot?" Grimskab had returned. "Nowz ya chance - da 'umies 'ave bin sighted - dey iz approachin' from all sides!"

It has been a bit quiet around here.... very very quiet... but I hope for this to soon change. I was hoping to come back with a bang, but circumstances have forced me to return prematurely. I have a battle on the 4th of December against my other arch nemesis - troy_tempest - though this time it will be his new Sisters coming out to play rather than his Tau. My dilemma - 1750pts - and a week away beforehand! I'm currently at 1500pts field-able - which means I need to build another 250pts in about a week and a half. The dilemma - what can I build quickly, that will meet the exacting modelling requirements I burden myself with, and fit with Da Dark Angelz? (and I also have bits to hand) - More boyz in a Trukk (WIP already)? That Boomwagon I've been planning for ages? Loota/Devastatas? Stormboyz? Warbikers/Rav'nwing? Maybe that Battlewagon kit I'm sure is lying around somewhere... I thought I'd put the question out to you most excellent Dakkanauts while I ponder it myself...

Thankfully I have reorganised everything for easy access

And catching up on some long overdue comments...

JohnnoM wrote:If you havent finished the bikers then you must put one of them doing a wheelie, possibly over an enemy?
I'm sure it will happen!

Fair enough - and equally valid!

Hmmm... I may have already found my best bet - upgrade Morgrim from a Warboss to counts as Ghazghkull (+115pts) plus a unit of 4 Warbikers including kitted up Nob (+140pts) = 255pts + 1491pts I had before = 1746pts! I already have a Warbiker, so that would only involve making two more regular Warbikers and a Nob Biker...
(I also thought of the Ghazghkull upgrade plus 9 Lootas - but I'd have to make all 9 Lootas...)

You've got me thinking again about converting my RT era ork bikers (which are tiny) into a "grot" Nob Bike mob. A little bit of work should yield some really fun figures.

@Rogue Wolves, CommissarKhaine: Thanks! Actually, there are quite a few kits used in this model - Warbikers (of course!), Deffkoptas, Nobz, Kommandos, FW Kommando Upgrades, FW Ork Guns - as well as the Trukk kit (some you will see in today's update...)

@endtransmission, mullet_steve: Great idea! You may just see it in the future.

Right, so update! Made it to minimum WYSIWYG level...

Boss Pole (and saddle bags and gear)

Twin Linked Big Shoota

And to celebrate making it to this minimum standard (still much more work to do) - started on the two additional Warbikers:

The bikers I think will make a great addition! I'm also building my nids up, so we'll be able to have some very bloody battles when you're here.

inspiration, I almost want to say arnie from t2 for the nob, and an orky version of a light cycle from tron for the other one. of course I'm probably way off on both

Easy Rider?

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/11/23 16:38:41

Post by: Arakasi

Yup, you're both way off A bit more eclectic I think. Still, thinking about it, the inspiration has a much thinner front wheel - and doesn't have a big gun attached to the side - and doesn't wear a helmet - so it may be an unfair challenge...

The Warbiker boyz aren't (currently) inspired by anything more than the need to finish them

Can I be so cheeky and request an army shot so far , Your guys look pretty awsome, shame I havnt got time to look through all 63 pages!!!!!!

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/11/24 18:40:28

Post by: Arakasi

You may. An updated army shot is about two weeks away at least - mostly due to finishing these Warbikers (modelling wise) and a week away overseas.

Meanwhile, I have a useful tool for finding the most recent army shot without trawling 63 pages - Skip to catch up post on page 50!

From there, I see the most recent shot is the following (no, I won't make you go and find it yourself )

I happen to know there aren't any army shots since then - but you would only need to have trawled through 13 pages from there - much more manageable!

Of course, nothing stopping the dedicated going through 63 pages - but I really suggest trying the catchup post first!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Well, apparently I lied. I thought I was missing a few things from that shot. I have a more recent army shot in my Da Dark Angelz crash Platinum Devil 3 battle reports. Or maybe I didn't lie - they technically aren't in this thread - though there would have been links.... anyway:

Da Dark Angelz (1500pts)

Da Left Ovas

Of course, there have been more battle reports since then, but either less than 1500pts, or not showing a full army shot...

Post by: Arakasi

While Da Boss iz away (massage) da grotz be upload'n all kinds o stuff...

'armless an' 'eadless...

Closer shot

Ready for battle! (Though not for paint - gotta put those DA bitz on first! Just another in a long line of incomplete projects...)

In close.

This time however, the bikes, riders, front wheel guards and twin-linked shootas are all still "unglued" - hopefully for easier painting Hopefully the magical blu-tac will keep them in place during their upcoming maiden battle... (assuming they aren't removed from the field first...)

Catchya

The right biker ended up with his face so close to the handlebars there was really only one position it was going to go in... but yeah, he's lining up his shot real careful like - not that it will matter I'm sure!

I'll try to get a new full army shot up next week...

Thanks for commenting everyone!

No, you've not mentioned the idea before.

My original guess was going to be Easy Rider, but when you said it was more obscure than that, I started to think about what else you watch or play. After that it was easy (Monkey Island/ Sam & Max)

The only other option I could think of was that somehow you were making a reference back to the really old GW record label when they put out some Saxon stuff with space marine bikers on the cover... but you don't strike me as a Saxon fan

Morgrim paced. "Wotz taken' so long?" he bellowed. 'Avin' giv'n da 'umies a good kickin', most ov da Boyz were in pretty good shape an' woz already out on da offenziv lookin' for any more 'umies dat might challenge Da Dark Angelz presence in da reg'n. Da Deffwing 'ad not bin so lucky - dey an' deir Trukk 'ad required extensiv repairs - more extensiv dan wot Morgrim 'ad bin led ta believe. 'E now wish'd 'e 'adn't stay'd behin' ta 'ave 'is Shoota looked at.

Skarag stopped workin' on da Trukk an' faced da pacing' Morgrim. "Ize got gud newz an' bad newz Boss!" 'e said enthusiastically. "Wotz da gud newz?" Morgrim grumbled impatiently. "Trukk's fixed!". "Right you lot" Morgrim shouted, addressin' da Meganobz, "Mount up! I wanna catch up ta da rest ov da Boyz *before* dey find anymore 'umies!". In a cacophony ov whirrs, thumps an' da occasional expletiv, da Meganobz clambered on ta da Trukk, Skarag an' Morgrim joinin' dem.

Az da Trukk sped off, Morgrim ponda'd dat 'e 'ad miss'd sumfin'. It suddenly dawn'd on 'im. 'E lift'd Skarag up by one ov 'iz Mek Tool armz. "Wot woz da bad newz?" Momentarily tak'n off guard, Skarag stamma'd "Da Boyz 'ave found da 'umies - dey 'iz already advancin' unda da cuvva ov dawn." Morgrim threw Skarag ova da side ov da Trukk in disgust an' turned 'iz attention ta da Trukk driva. "Get us dere before da battle iz ova or you're squig food!"

Skarag squinted through the darkness of dawn, trying to make out what manner of mechanical beast was moving up ahead. He had, only moments before, caught its shadow moving in the distance through his optical device - and instructed his Trukk driver to head towards it - flat out. As the Trukk drew nearer, he could make out the 'umie Boomgun - and the 'umies it belonged to. Racing off from the rest of the Boyz no longer seemed such a good idea...

Thanks monkeytroll! And in honour of your blog return, I'll make an effort to update mine!

Now - there is some good news and bad news. The good news is I have been keeping up my hobby time - yay! The bad news is I have been having trouble keeping up my blog - boo!

Anyway...

A couple of weeks ago (before the biker incident ) I took photos of everything still to do. Orks currently being painted:

Trukks and other various parts still being painted:

Stuff still being modelled:

Other Ork (and Dark Eldar?) stuff to finish, repair, satin finish...

So, I started the week easy like and shortened the Stikkbombz on Morgrim's Chukka:

Then I did a little work on the Meganobz - Codename Lightning had some more work done to his gauntlets (not easily seen...), a shoota attached under his left (right in the picture) arm (impossible to see) - and those on the left will be attachable by magnets eventually under his right arm - to give all three possible loadouts (twin linked shoota, combi shoota skorcha and combi shoota rokkit):

Warmachine was next, again with impossible to see additions to the bottoms of his gauntlets - but also his Grot assistant finally got a head!

I then returned to Morgrim, or more specifically - his scenic base. Here he is with his Attack Squig put together and based as part of the larger base:

And now with cut outs for two of the Grot who will be accompanying him:

I've actually cut out the other three slots now too - but no pic yet...

Then a very special delivery came - and I have my first two Finecast minis - 2 Venomthropes for Artsoldier35's GMS Trukk and my Twin Trukk:

Turning the blisters over - looks good so far...

Blisters opened:

First left:

First right:

Second left:

Second right:

It was at this point I realised the layout was slightly different between the two - what do you know? Two different batches: 877154 and 877599 - though I no longer know which is which. It wasn't until I started cleaning up that I noticed the bubbles - mostly because they are "hidden" on the bottom side...

Very small, none appear to be obscuring any detail, though more than I would have liked. I will have to see how much effort this takes to clean up. Of course, it also depends on what is going to be visible in the end. To give you and idea of where I am headed:

And possibly partially obscured by a tarp:

A lot more work to be done there. I did end up getting one Venomthrope together (minus arms) - but no photos of that either - yet. So what else? Well my Dark Eldar aspirations moved forward another notch with that order too:

But don't worry - that's a while off - just had to take advantage of the limited time offer! (and at 25% discount too )

Catchya!

Seeing three battleforces stacked up like that is.... impressive.

The good thing about the resin is that you can glue the model together, place it onto the truck and, using a hair dryer, carefully soften the tentacles to drape over the truck more naturally.

Can't wait to see how the trukks evolve now the trophies have arrived

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/12/11 23:22:17

Post by: Arakasi

@bigfish: I hadn't thought of that - impressive creativity there!

@monkeytroll: Today's update is just for you - multiple pics to reveal those hidden parts - well, on today's work anyway... The Mantis Ork was finished, but suffered some damage in transit. I need to glue (possibly pin) the two pieces back together and deal with any missing basing material. The DE are awaiting their basing being done, which is waiting on me making a decision. Git's Stormboy Nob is awaiting a satin spray - though it may just be easier to send it to him to do it

@Rogue Wolves: Thanks!

@Artsoldier35: I think that is where the original idea came from - and from one of my regular readers I think too, though it isn't in my page 50 catchup - must have come later - though I see you started it with the deer/tyranid carcass across the hood and Miss Dee made the leap to ID4 with Orks with stoogies and one called "Fat Lady"....

@mullet_steve: Nidz are a trophy carcass, in the back, Will Smith style

@CommissarKhaine: Good - I always look forward to your updates! I think we may have something cyclic here...

@endtransmission: Yes, I mustn't forget the hairdryer technique! You are sport on for the plan though

Right, todays' update. A photo before I begin - all holes cut for all of Morgrim's retainers:

Start on "Da Lion Helm" and "Wotcha". First draft. 3 pics from multiple angles just for monkeytroll

I think the "wingz" are a bit big (bunny ear big) - and may cut them down to about half the height (where the thicker stem starts). Also not 100% on the grot. Definitely needs some robes to be more "Wotcha" like - but I may need to change to one I can get the helmet more in front of rather than over the shoulder... not sure...

Lastly, starting on da bosspole - the classic Empire General Standard to Dark Angels conversion:

Needs some green stuff to fix the wingz...

Catchya!

Looking at the hat-grot again, I'd be tempted to try and make it more obvious that he's struggling to balance the helmet. The easiest way of doing that would be to bend his legs a little so his back foot is on the floor, but his front foot is up in the air a bit and he's leaning backwards... a bit like in a Laurel and Hardy sketch

Post by: Arakasi

@Rogue Wolves: Yes, I added the sword. The original sculpt has a Hammer of Sigmar. First, remove the hammer at the top (a jeweller's saw comes in real handy here - and later) and replace with the top of a DA Power Sword. Second, cut out the handle of the hammer at the bottom (again, jeweller's saw comes in handy) - use a knife to shave off the bottom bit. Cut off the bottom of the Power Sword at the same angle as the scroll and to the correct size and glue in place. Now, the tricky parts! Cut the wings off of the DA Power Sword and glue in to position - you probably only need one cut in half, or you are going to have to cut/sand down both - and glue into position (I didn't do this part very well). Even trickier - cut the Power Sword at the hilt, then cut down the length to the banner and at the same angle - this will be a small piece! Cut away from the left at an angle to match the skeletal arm. File down the back until it is very thin! Additionally, take your knife to the last bit of hammer staff and shave down as much as possible. Then glue your tiny bit in place. Job's a good one!

@monkeytroll: Storage rack(s) are because I decided to get organised (and now have to deal with multiple pets). Not cheap, but very useful. Only just fits all my Ork bitz though... (admittedly, several are being used for Dread Fleet). There is a much grander design (of course!) for the boss pole - a cross between a looted DA banner and an Orky version if you will - but we are getting (a tiny bit) ahead of ourselves

@Aboucher: Thanks!

@endtransmission: Challenge publicly accepted! (I can't believe you bolded "finish"). I'll try out your grot idea - I think I get what you are getting at

@everyone: Of course you all like the bunny ears I don't have any issue with Orks and over the top (really? would anyone think that looking at my Orks?) I'll probably try the shorter version, put it up for your valued consideration, and then make a final decision from there

I NEED that banner from the Beastmen Minotaur Kit.

I was going to use a Black Orc banner - but it's weedier - plus the Minotaur one comes with a bear/lion skin - it's a match made in heaven!

MUST... NOT... BUY... £27.70... KIT... FOR... BANNER...

Anyone happen to have a spare Minotaur banner they don't need? I think I may have to try the trade channel...

@Matt.Kingsley:

@endtransmission: Way ahead of you, well, except for the ebay thing (nothing I can see)... I have a suspicion I may be a tad insane in the next day or two - it is holding up my Boss Pole Bearer now!

Right, at this risk of upsetting Dakka, "Da Lion Helm" Bearer - now wiv shorta bunny ears...

And another angle for monkeytroll

*I* like it more. Please send hate to endtransmission. Joking... really...

A start on "Da Book 'o Taktiks" Bearer:

And an in progress shot of Morgrim and his rapidly expanding entourage:

Give the shear size of what I have planned for the Boss Pole, he will probably go where the helm bearer is currently. I am figuring the Ammo Runt will go in the slot next to him (see if I can work the hurricane bolters into that one ) and that will leave the front slot and the two far right slots for the Wotchas - of which "Da Sword 'o Sekrits" bearer is the last to make his appearance

Catchya!

The group is coming together nicely. You're inspiring me to try and come up with a mini diorama for my inquisitor's retinue (when I get around to them).

The helmet does look more balanced with the shorter wings... but is it Orky?

Post by: monkeytroll

Ahh, thanks to the extra angle I can now see that the shorter ears do indeed look more realistic

I preferred the longer ears

But as always your model, and you're happy with the shorter

Like the book bearer, hope we're going to see some glyph taktiks in there when done. Have you thought about using watchers with a head swap for your wotchas? I've been trying to add a nose poking out of one's hood for a tekkie, but I'm thinking a full head swap might be better.

I saw the hurricane bolter in front of the meganob in the background and thought you had another 'kopta or something on the go

And it's not just for the banner, think what other interesting bits are in that box.
I've not seen it, so I don't know what they are, but there's bound to be various useful things in there

@Llamahead: I'm not completely happy with the book grot yet myself, but then, he's nowhere near finished yet.

@Gitsplitta: If only the effort could guarantee the spectacular-ness.

@Ovion: It is going to be fun painting between those small ears - not that the longer ones would have actually made that any easier. While I do like Asterix, I am actually going for the Dark Angels Lion Helm Bearer look. The funny thing about trying to mimic Space Marines ideas in Orks is sometimes things just don't quite line up. The helm bearer is a good example. The grot is about the right size, but a helmet to fit an Ork Warboss is *much* bigger than a Space Marine Helmet. The longer ears are probably a better proportional fit - but then they look a bit too comic-ish/delicate for an Ork (IMHO). However, I noticed on closer inspection tonight the Lion Helm has a skull and braid around it - so I'm sure I can clutter it up more with an Ork skull (or SM helmet?) and chain

@Matt.Kingsley: Noted. I have plenty more long ears should I change my mind.

@Santobell: Is there more to that reaction you aren't telling me about? (Just curious)

@CommissarKhaine: Of course you like the long ears I'll keep making the book grot look older in mind - though I'm not sure how to off the top of my head (or whether I want to) - do Grotz get old? I guess you would be the person to ask Some insane purchases have been made - the boss pole might start up again in a couple of days...

@endtransmission: Passing the hate was punishment for your cheeky public challenge Can't work between Christmas and New Year now - I have a challenge! I seriously doubt Morgrim et al will meet the challenge requirements - I should switch to something that has a chance - I figure I'll just start painting come my week off. You should do a mini diorama for your Inquisitor's retinue - it will slow you down and give me a chance to catch up! (I mean, not be quite so far behind). Yes it's Orky!

@monkeytroll: Of course you prefer the longer ears too I see what I can do re glyph taktiks in da book once I get to the painting (painting? what's that?). I hadn't thought about using watchers with a head swap. I had thought of using Gnoblars - anyone know how they compare to Grotz? I'll keep it it mind, but I really need to reign in my spending Plus I thought it might be fun to wrap some Grotz in Green Stuff robes if necessary You really inspect the backgrounds of my images don't you! First the bitz boxes, now the hurricane bolters - thankfully I don't have anything else on the go than what you have seen in the blog - so no, no more 'koptas for the moment Yes, there are big axes and horns - lots of horns! (Maybe I can put a set on the front of a Trukk...) Failing that, I could always out some *gasp* actual Minotaurs together...

@Ovion: Sounds like too much work, selling Minotaur bits on ebay - and anyway - you never know when those bitz might come in handy (monkeytroll has already corrupted me)

@bigfish: Finally, some sense!

@Aboucher: That was the original plan!

Phew! A lot of comments to get through. Pity my update won't be anywhere near as thrilling. So I started this evening determined to make a start on the Sword 'o Sekritz bearer. After ruling many lines on plasticard, it occurred to me I should probably plan out the sword a bit better first. So no modelling tonight, just planz/sketches. I want something oversized (of course) and brutal looking (goes without saying) and Cloud's sword with a bit of an Orky make-over seemed to suit the bill. I'll just make that out of plasticard right? Anyway - the initial sketches:

And a mockup with da bearer:

I mean - what can go wrong?

Catchya!

Post by: monkeytroll

I like the look of that bearer and sword, good luck with that. I've always found a simple sword or axe surprisingly tricky to pull off well for some reason, probably because I never tried planning them either

Gnoblars are a little smaller than grots, skinnier, but not much. I've interchanged pieces before, as long as it's bigger gnoblars and smaller grots They'd make a good base for gs robes I'd imagine.

I know, it's driving me mad! There is soooooooooo much room for detail. I mean, I thought I had a big base on that grot-o-mine, but this... I feel like I should get a prize for participation. It's so massive. It's going to make a brilliant center piece to the army.

Post by: Arakasi

@monkeytroll: We'll have to see what the ol' Arakasi magic can pull off... with a bit of Dakkanaut help of course! Well, I've bought more Grotz so I guess Gnoblars will have to wait... (all the best ones are probably attached to Ogres anyway...)

@The Good Green: Good to see you still about - and enjoying my small contributions to Dakka

@Matt.Kingsley: Took the words right out of my... fingers?

So, apparently all three of my "purchases" (why spend once when you can spend thrice?) were dispatched today. Two are first class - so maybe I'll get them tomorrow, Royal Mail willing? If so, da Banna Bearer will be able to progress again tomorrow night...

In the meantime, Da Sword 'o Sekritz won't make itself! Cut out plasticard parts:

Carefully stacked up:

That's still missing the grip and pommel, but has the beginnings of the cross-guard on the left. Some serious gluing, filing and detailing still to do (in addition to the missing parts) - but should start to give you an idea of where I'm heading. Not quite what I had originally planned, but that was probably too dainty for Orks anyway

Catchya!

At least two according to the sketches I think I should be able to follow these simple steps:

1) Is it Orky enough? If yes, finish.
2) Add teef, rivets and/or glyphs. Goto step 1

For older grots, I'd go for a very pale skin tone. I've also seen people add long hair or a long bear to mark them as old. As for grotz getting old: one or two years, at best?

@pretre: Welcome to the madness! (Disclaimer: Madness may not be quite as much as monkeytroll's blog)

@CommissarKhaine: Now it's looking better? Would an old Grot of one or two years be old enough for long hair or a long beard?!? I thought Grotz, like Orkz, were hairless Probably to stop other Orks or Grotz pulling it

Da Sword 'o Sekritz continues care of Royal Mail - not.

I've only just glued the outer blades on, so still some cleanup on the cross-guard for them to do.

The money shot? (well, cute shot anyway, IMO)

Yes monkeytroll - much more Orkifying to do - just concentrating on the general shape to begin with

I hope he'll fit on the base! (probably far right?)

Plenty of madness to go round I think

You haven't sent it via Cork-signia have you

Basic shapes looking great, it does evoke a Cloud feeling so you got that part down fine. Far right as we look at it, so he's on Morgrim's left? Looks like the end of the blade will get lost under da boss, but any shorter and it would lose a lot of impact and I don't think that it would be an issue.

Cute little grot . And the hair is just an option, but plenty of old grots/orks had hair. The old Goff rokkerz, old nobz... They lost their hair in 4th ed. or so,

@CommissarKhaine: I thought it was hair squigs - even back then...

Right - so the elusive Minotaur Banner:

And where we are going for Morgrim's Boss Pole (sans pole and Grot Wotcha):

Original plan was to use two scrolls on each side - which may have worked with the smaller Black Orc banner, but didn't seem right here. Additional advantage - I don't have to worry about very similar looking scrolls Nothing is glued in this picture, so feel free to make any suggestions without remorse I'm liking it so far, so I'm sure you guys will have some different opinions - you always do! Hmm, DA sword bearer, Lion pelt, horns, scrolls... I think that's all that's needed

I mean, if it was me I'd say there seems to be a few cogs missing, and it could do with a tad more wiring, but...

So how big is that beast of a banna, and how far off the ground will the grot have it?

Post by: Arakasi

@monkeytroll: Cogs and wiring may still appear - yet to get to the smaller details! (Or did you mean large cogs and industrial piping?) The banner is pretty big! I've been waiting for the bearer choices to arrive - which they now have - so maybe a sizing pic in the near future... (though see below commens regarding bearer issues)

@Matt.Kingsley: Holding it is not the issue - keeping it up might be though (or not being blown away with it)

@Rogue Wolves: Not much bigger than that, but I still need to do the actual pole still - size it to the bearer and the scenic base/diorama...

@CommissarKhaine: At last we agree

@bigfish: Now this is a thought. Endtransmission and I were discussing some ideas off-Dakka yesterday with regards to this. Two or more Grotz holding it up might be better - but much more challenging - though he did suggest wrapping them in the Wotcha robes and just having the bottom one's nose/head sticking out I had considered using a Boy simply because of how large it is. A Runtherd might be a suitable compromise. In the end I'll probably stick with the Grot though - the small size of the Grot should emphasise the size of the Boss pole further. Also - what Ork wants to be the Warboss' lackey, holding his Boss Pole wherever he goes rather than getting stuck in?

My potential bearers arrived. I'll forgive Royal Mail as GW and FW did send them 2nd Class... now, choices. Choice 1 is the Grot Banna Bearer from the FW Ork Mek Boss Buzzgob. Advantage - he is already carrying a boss pole! Disadvantage - he comes on a custom base - which will either be hard to remove or hard to incorporate into my scenic base. Choice 2 is the Grot Tekkie #3 - just need to replace the Wrench with the Boss Pole...

Thoughts?

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/12/17 13:59:48

Post by: Santobell

Banner Bearer from FW = my 2 cents worth, well that and to me the scale is dead right I cna see the grots dragging thr word, helm and gear behind them. Besides and Ork would just take the sword and bash stuff with it instead of hold it.

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/12/17 15:37:16

Post by: monkeytroll

The tekkie would look pretty good, hanging off the huge banna pole, knackered after lugging it about. But doesn't he have a backpack and gubbins that might not fit it with the wotcha look?

You wouldn't need to remove all of the FW base, I can see the retinue dropping several interesting bits around them as they stop to survey the field.

So err, not much help there Just trying to keep consistent

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/12/17 15:42:38

Post by: Arakasi

@Santobell: I think I have to agree, the angle of the Boss Pole was what sold it in the end.

@monkeytroll: I wasn't too worried about the gubbinz - either leave it or cover it i robes/bandages.

Well, I've managed to successfully take the FW Grot off his base - I think well enough that I'll be able to use that base on another project without too much effort I think the suggestion by Gitsplitta to purchase a Jeweller's saw early on has paid off multiple times over now!

@everyone: Unanimous at last - I must be headed in the correct direction

@Matt.Kingley: A bit blurry, but still, better than just a post promising a pic that never comes Happy... for now...

I have been struggling with what do to for the Ammo Grot. Probably why he ended up last. Struggling do decide what Grot to use, ad what interaction (if any) he has with the Land Raider - specifically the Hurricane Bolters that are meant to be there... I eventually remembered the Stompa Grotz Santobell gave be when I was back in Oz last year, and one of them seemed so much closer to perfect than anything else I had mulled over, so now I can give you the complete set:

And closer in on the Ammo Grot:

Now the fun *really* can begin... The issue I was having with the Hurricane Bolters is just how big they are - especially when compared to a Grot. I'm currently thinking to throw the bits around the diorama - as if it had been Weapon Destroyed. There are seven bases (including Morgrim) - I'm thinking of spreading the six Bolters around, one to each base (except either Morgrim or the attack Squig - who will hopefully be on and/or chewing track - I think). But first, a little cleanup so that you can see them "unplugged"

Post by: Arakasi

@Matt.Kingsley: Excuses excuses - you have had weeks!

@monkeytroll: Me too

@CommissarKhaine: Good idea! I had some thoughts - dragging along behind (via chain perhaps) or strapped to his back (barrel upwards) - but I think the winning idea might be on top of his current load - along side/in the same direction as his head, barrel pointed slightly down and behind. I reckon I can probably cut out the existing puny ammo feed and substitute one of my Zinge Industries ones, have it hang down in front of him. I was also planning to extend the existing ammo running down his back to drag along the ground behind him.

Tonight has been mostly cleanup of the Land Raider base and reworking the bases into it. Three of the bases (2 left, 1 right) have the plugs underneath them to the other side of the Land Raider track. I've cut these off, drilled holes instead, and fitted plasticard rod in the other half to fit into these new holes. Real exciting stuff. No pics as there basically isn't anything new to see Maybe tomorrow night...

I still need to finish off all of the base detailing and the individual models - especially Morgrim.

I then need to not be distracted by other projects and/or challenges

There will be painting next week - just not of the diorama - two units of Trukk boyz and a Big Mek to finally finish...

My sole critique would be that the right-hand scroll is not being blown as much as the others, so while highly technical it just looks a little odd to me. You'd get away with it though

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/12/20 13:14:12

Post by: Arakasi

I'm trying to match the angles of the bear claws on both sides (not that the left one does in most pics, due to not being glued), without using two identical scrolls (as I figure that will/does look weirder)

None of it is glued yet though, so there is still time to play with it. I'm still not 100% happy with it either. Originally the extensions that the scrolls sit on were equal sized - but the banner actually favours the right. Evening them up doesn't seem to have improved things though, so I'll probably shorten the left extension again.

Also, I've removed the horn ends - I think they were giving it too much width. I still need to find an end replacement though. (The Minotaur ones hung differently again...)

Thank you for your critique - I will remember it when I come back to the banner.

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/12/20 21:10:51

Post by: CommissarKhaine

The bear claws don't have to match perfectly IMO, doens't bother me at all. I do belive the rightmost scroll should be put less vertically when you glue things down eventually.

As for replaciong the horn ends: some old wartrakk wheel decoration might be the thing you're looking for?

So - more to the left or to the right?

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/12/20 23:41:32

Post by: monkeytroll

You have wartrakk bits?

Inconceivable!

I think your scroll placement is pretty close as is, keeping them roughly in line with their respective claws. All the different components won't get blown in exactly the same way by a gust of wind. Maybe add a bit of movement to the bottom of the more vertical scroll?

So... some actual painting in progress. I'll wait while you all get back off the floor...

The Meganob cloak and the Painboy shoulder pad have had their Dark Angelz Green applied several times over to get a smooth coat - who would have thought it would be so hard to cover Iyanden Darksun? They have been given a wash of 2:1:5:4 Dark Angels Green/Chaos Black/Gloss Varnish/Water () ready for a retouch of Dark Angels Green. No pics yet. (I said I'd wait!) I had previously noted the 1:1 Dark Angels Green/Chaos Black seemed too dark - and this looks promising.

I gave three boyz a highlight of 1:1:2 Dark Angels Green/Snot Green/Water - but the transition was more severe than my blending ability could cope with. Today I have had some actual success and applied a 2:1:2:2 DA Green/Snot Green/Gloss Varnish/Water highlight/blend followed by a 1:1:2:2 DA Green/Snot Green/Gloss Varnish/Water Highlight blend to the rest of the boyz. The first pic of just the Nob after the first highlight:

The second pic of after the second highlight on the other Nob:

This is possibly where my shoddy camera work isn't really helping. Oh well, it serves as proof of progress - and the text above reminds me of the combinations I was working with for later Taking smaller steps is helping with the blending, even if it isn't obvious, but of course, it means more layers - doh! There isn't really the contrast yet. I can still mix up through Goblin Green (I think) and one of the yellows (Sunburst or Golden) - hopefully that will be fewer steps... (at least it will be smaller amounts to paint with each!)

Will need a wash in there to bring it altogether. So far thinking a Thraka Green and/or Devlan Mud for the clothing and Badab Black and/or Devlan Mud for the armour - which I'm hoping will differentiate them more than just the sharpness of the highlights.

Of course, the fun doesn't really start until I get past the green...

Sanity... still... in... check...

Catchya!

Just checking!

Added pure Snot Green (or was that Goblin Green - it was supposed to be Snot Green.. - actually, not pure, 1:1:1 with Gloss Varnish and Water - and frustratingly the paint keep wanted to separate...) as sharp edge highlights. May just start mixing in a Yellow now. Anyway, a pic of one of the three boyz completed to this stage (also the two Nobz - completed to this stage - not pics)

Had my first game/trial run on Vassal against endtransmission. As a lark (and because I hadn't prepared beforehand/didn't want to take my "typical" 500pt force), I took my Dark Angels V1.0 force. (It's on the catchup page if you are *really* interested). Pretty terrible list. Poor endtransmission had some poor luck in some critical moments, so despite almost wiping me, I pulled off a sneaky victory. Ork of the match goes to the Shoota Boy who singlehandedly won the match while on taktikal retreat (He and a buddy, the last survivors of a 10 strong mob led by the Warboss, split off from the Warboss and shot a Veteran from the squad holding 2 objectives. They failed to hold up to a tank shock and retreated, using craters for cover. His buddy was shot down, but he retreated, capped a second Veteran, survived amongst the craters, retreated again and capped two more Veterans. The surviving Veterans failed morale and retreated, abandoning their two objectives!)

Post by: CommissarKhaine

Looking good. For an edge highlight, have you considered adding a bit of bleached bone or rotting flesh? They make the highlight less stark than white, while still allowing a sharp higlight. And you should give that shoota boy 'termy honnurs' now

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/12/29 10:16:08

I'll be using a yellow for the same effect (I use those others on skin from memory)

Post by: monkeytroll

Ooops Umm, I thought that was just another layer of 'arder skin wot da dok had grafted on

No? Didn't think that one would wash.

I will admit to being a bit confused as to why you had added flesh/red wash to the skin before starting the highlights

So, the armour's looking good on that boy That is a nice green you have going there, and I do like the blending up from the black. Are you planning on adding any other colours to the boots, or keeping them the same as the armour? Or to put it slightly differently, will the cloth and armour parts be getting a different wash at some point to differentiate between them?

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/12/29 23:43:13

Post by: Arakasi

Boots wil remain the same colour as the armour/clothing. The toe caps will be done as per the armour - so probably a Badab Black and/or Devlan Mud Wash, with harder highlights and chipping, the rest as per the cloth - so probably a Thraka Green and/or Devlan Mud Wash, with softer highlights and no chipping

I've realised now I was using Goblin Green not Snot Green before - doh! So, everyone else has been brought up with 1:1:1 Snot Green/Gloss Varnish/Water followed by 1:1:2:2 Snot Green/Goblin Green/Gloss Varnish/Water - including some earlier ones where I made the leap to 1:1 Dark Angels Green/Snot Green too early. Confused?

Anyway - latest boy as an example of highlighted up to 1:1 Snot Green/Goblin Green:

And overview progress - the boyz to the left of the Nobz (and the Nobz) headed to Goblin Green a bit early:

The ones to the right are as per the first pic - well - except for the Meganob and Painboy of course:

It's a lot of effort for boyz - but I have to keep reminding myself - this is pretty much still practise for when I get to the character models... Anyway, funnily enough, smaller graduations in colour blend smoother and easier than larger ones, but take longer to do - who'd have thunk it?

The combination of mixing Gloss Varnish into the paint mixtures and photo-ing under my day bulb with my iPhone is not doing my pictures any favours unfortunately. I was hoping to get more time over Christmas/New Year to meet endtransimssion's challenge - but it's not looking good so far. Still - I'll probably continue this painting until it's done - regardless of whether I make the "deadline" - it will b good to have substantially more complete.

Started a 1750pt Vassal game with endtransmission - though this one is being played offline. Outnumbered by Guard again! Just waiting on him now...

Catchya!

Ah, quite a few comments to catch up on before tonight's update!

@Gitsplitta: Slowly but surely. I'm sure we've had this back and forth at least a couple of times now Still need to send you your GMS Stormboy Nob... (I haven't forgotten!)

@spudkins: Unfortunately, it's not as many Orks as you might think.... but you do get pages and pages of step by step progress...

@CommissarKhaine: Yes, the effect is very subtle. it's more what I'm practising than what I'm after. I'm not redoing mistakes and overhandedness...

@The Good Green: Yeah, diorama is on hold while I actually finish some long overdue painting

@monkeytroll: Understandable I haven't gone back and redone anything yet - just brought everything up to the same level (some skipped a few steps...) We'll see if I can tell the difference at the end - probably not... Surprisingly perhaps, I am not yet sick of green (thankfully, the later highlights apply to less of the model)

@HAZZER: Thanks for checking in! I think your blog is on my subscribe list, but if it isn't, it will be soon. I don't comment much (quality over quantity - well - that's my excuse anyway!) but I do keep up with probably too many blogs... No desire to change the skin tone at the moment - enough issues just getting them finished! I'm sure it will happen sometime in the far distant future...

Now, with that out of the way, tonight's update!

Went through and added a further highlight of 1:1:2:2 Goblin Green/Golden Yellow/Gloss Varnish/Water - trying to favour the top/corners of the armour and cloth. Here's another boy in the rotation at this stage:

Then decided to do a 1:1 Thraka Green Wash/Gloss Varnish wash across all that green to try to tie the highlighting together. I think that was a bit weak, so at some point upped to 2:1 Thraka Green Wash/Gloss Varnish. Another boy in rotation at this stage:

And a partial group shot - coming together nicely as a group even if the individuals aren't "Golden Daemon Perfect"

Catchya!

Thanks guys...

End of 2011/Start of 2012 update...

Tried adding a Badab Black wash to the armour plates, followed by a 1:1 Badab Black/Gryphonne Sepia Wash (with equal parts Gloss Varnish). Then Devlan Mud-ed the cloth. Very subtle, perhaps too subtle. Hopefully chipping and damage on the armour/metal parts will do a better job of separating them (or I'll have to use different shades of green in future...)

Hmmm.. lots of plain boring armour plates... needs something...

Let's practise some freehand! Da Dark Angelz symbol - inspired by WhaleMusic360's Deff Dread he started for me ages ago... outline in Adeptus Battlegrey:

Fill in with Codex grey and re-add Adeptus Battle Grey to the bottom of the overlapping teef:

Finally highlight the top edges with Skull White:

Group shot:

Now just need something for the shoulder pads on that 'Ard Boy...

Happy New Year!

Thanks guys!

As noted yesterday, the 'Ard Boy Shoota needed some decals:

Which prompted me to add more white to the Dark Angelz glyph to try to bring it inline...

Not as sharp. Perhaps I need to look into printing my own decals (for the future)...

Sponged on some 1:1 Chaos Black/Dark Angels Green to the armour:

Added some Boltgun Metal:

Group Shot at this level:

Photos aren't really good enough to see the subtle differences, but the Boltgun Metal is starting to differentiate the cloth from the metal. Back plates with glyphs look a bit messy, but helmets, shoulder pads and plates are looking promising.

I don't think it's going to come together properly until then end though anyway...

Catchya!

@Matt.Kingsley, HAZZER: Thanks again.

@CommissarKhaine: Yeah, I'm both patient (too much detail on regular boyz) and impatient (failing to build up the colour) sometimes. Maybe you'll see some orange... rust and/or dust

@Imperial Monkey: I think you must have missed it!

I like deadlines. I like the whooshing noise they make as they sail right past....

Okay - this pic was actually before the deadline:

I think he is supposed to be showing off the weathering on the helmet, but it's not a good picture - sorry So, this was just with some Snot Green highlighting the previous chips.

Since then, I've added a further 1:1 Snot Green/Golden Yellow highlight, and added some Chainmail scratches and highlights. The metal is looking pretty worn now! (Though it is really hard to make out on such small surfaces... - or bad photos) Next I am going to go a bit further and add some browns and oranges for rust, which will probably differentiate it further - I just need to not go overboard. I can then add some final Mithril silver scratches/highlights. Then I think I'll consider the cloth/armour done until I get to the final weathering with powders! Probably next on my list is all of the *actual* metal. Hmmm... should I save the rust until I've done that?

Boyz are looking good in green.

I think even at just the wash stage it seemed there was enough diferentiation between the armour and cloth, subtle, but there. And if it shows on a pic it probably looks better in the hand, non?

Chipping's looking cool, I'd have said the back plate wanted freehand rather than sponged chips, but that's just my contrary ways

Skin looks good too

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2012/01/05 00:09:57

Post by: Arakasi

@HAZZER: Yeah. The issue I found was, with normal Ork Boyz, there isn't enough armour plates to put all the Taktikal markings I wanted to do, so tattoos seemed like a good answer. I may need to look into making my own transfers though in the future, or severely improving my freehand...

@CommissarKhaine: Thanks. Just for you, I took a photo before I started tonight. I think the photo quality can be blamed for any lack of popping though...

@monkeytroll: It was still very subtle in hand. One thing to take from the 'Eavy Metal team is that if it looks good before you are finished, you peaked early I keep telling myself that... anyway, I hope I can look back on these in the future and say - yep - this is where I'm at, and it turned out fine! You may be right about the freehand chips on the back plate... I will give that a go in the future... Somehow I haven't managed to screw up the skin painting the clothing and armour - yay

For tonight, well, I spent too much time taking my first turn of a Vassal game against endtransmission. But I still persisted. Decided to tidy up/recover remaining bits in Chaos Black ready for the next stage. Time consuming, so the following boy is the only one done to this stage so far...

Hmmm... you may want to click through to the gallery and zoom in on that one - or not...

Enjoy!

@Gitsplitta: 15 Orks = legion?

@CommissarKhaine: Sometimes I wish I wasn't so picky about my painting Especially when I see stuff that is twice (or more) as good and took a tenth (or less) of the time!

@HAZZER: Thanks again!

Right - nothing last night - the evening was subverted for home IT help desk duties... grrrrr....

Tonight - another boy gets his black on:

Only 9 more to go (not including the Meganob and Painboy, who are not up to this stage yet, and who will probably be used as stop gaps to maintain my sanity over the weekend). Thankfully, three are already past this stage (and the one from two nights ago of course...)

I am also enjoying a 1750pt game vs endtransmission on Vassal - PBEM style - the game hasn't swung either way yet, but it's early days (coming to the end of my Turn 2). So far I've been left wondering why I took a Looted Boomwagon, SAG Big Mek or Deff Dread - all three haven't fired or reached anything yet - and two units of 5 Lootas have produced a total of 15 shots without a single glance (or pen) on a Vendetta... (though they did walk/run on in Dawn of War Turn 1). Current score is 2KP to 1KP to the Guard - but I have hopes to raise that to 3KP before my turn (assault) ends...

I'm completely okay with the pictures the way they are. It's awesome to see you build things (like the little diorama from a few pages back), but if you're taking the time to set up photo equipment, we're getting to see less progress.

I vote more pictures of lower quality, maybe with the good pics for finished vehicles/squads.

Hmmm... focus seems a bit out on that one...

@Rogue Wolves: Thanks again.

@CommissarKhaine: I don't know - I remember the green - both lots - being more demotivating (there is actually less black to touch up...)

@Alfndrate: Your input has been assimilated - thanks!

@HAZZER: Slowly but surely...

@ceorron: You know they are supposed to be red right? I'm going to have to experiment with deepening the colour at some point... Thanks again!

I was thinking the Boltgun Metal wasn't worth photoing for each one after that first pic above - it's brighter than I remember, and therefore too clean, but we all knew a wash (or two or three) is still to come right? But I got through three more, and I think it depends on the model how good it looks at this stage. I think these three give a better indication of where I'm headed (being in better focus helps too...)

Why do I get the feeling your really pushing yourself, Arakasi?

I always find it is harder when I do that, mostly if I just wait long enough, sometimes up to a month, but some how I find a paint brush in my hand and paint on a model. I also tend to do models in batches of 10 if possible.

Once I have caught the bug it is usually the case that I have to stop myself after that, or something more important comes up which can be annoying.

@slice'n'dice, HAZZER, Gitsplitta: Thanks

@CommissarKhaine: That's the Nob that comes off his base and can be placed on his Trukk's Boarding Plank (Not sure if anyone remembers back that far )

@spudkins: Tonight I took the time to find some white background. I think the Nob turned out okay - the other three are suffering focus issues I think.... Practise makes progress I guess... I'll take more care (maybe not use my phone camera ) for when they are done...

Nob:

Shootas:

Thats all of them with their base Boltgun Metal now... washes next...

@ceorron: Yes, I'm pushing myself. Really pushing myself? Maybe. You know these are the same Boyz you faced at Silver Sorcerer right? (Still not done - ugh!) It does make it harder - I think I just overestimated how close I was to finishing them But I can be stubborn, which helps with seeing such feats through. I think the worst thing is that I have multiple goals/hangups that pull me in all directions at once.

The larger the batch, the more efficient you can be (I love efficiency!) - in terms of time and paint - but the quicker things get boring/drag you down. When I was doing the skin and guns, my batch was actually larger! (I've dropped the Deffkoptas, Big Mek, Trukks and crew for now)
The smaller the batch, it's more interesting, but less efficient - and consistency and the benefits of practising techniques over and over again in quick succession lessen... At one point I figured I would be better off doing batches of 5... (or 5 equivalent, dependent on the complexity of the model...)
I find if I put off painting too long (say two weeks) my desire to restart it actually decreases with time - I find it easier to continue once I am going, but that too will wear on me with time - if that makes sense.
It doesn't help that I am putting so much effort into regular Boyz. I used to tell myself this was because once I painted it once, it was done forever, so I should take my time and do the best job possible. Now I console myself that it is practise for my painting, my speed, and eventually my characters.

I guess I just prefer modelling and playing Hence I have to "force" myself to paint - can't have one aspect bringing down the other two! I look forward to playing with a well painted force, and surely my modelling deserves an equal effort in the painting department... right?

Anyway, end of random self inflicted painting issues

At various stages I've either painted each figure singly, batched in squads, or batches of around 5. At the moment (or as close to this moment as any of my painting was ) I think I'm batching several colours, then kind of going the single route, with the occasional moment of 'hey, this blue would look good on him too'. I definitely find my interest in painting wanes and wanes....err, waxes and wanes over time.

I'm never able to force myself to paint, as the results are always way lower than they should be, so I just keep chopping and gluing until the urge strikes me again.

That's probably pretty obvious to anyone who follows my blog

Had forgotten, I have to admit. New models are looking snazz, and I agree about the production line thingy. It's always a fine balance; music helps IMO!

@SelvaggioSaky: We are not alone Thanks! Will check out your blog momentarily...

@HAZZER: Thanks! How big a group shot are we talking?

@monkeytroll: In a previous life I've painted a figure singly (actually, my Waaagh! Dakka Nob might qualify too...) I think I like batches, but once you get down to the niggly details I may be able to bring myself to concentrate on singles to complete them... If I never forced myself to paint, the results would be even lower - they wouldn't be painted! (Done that in a previous life too...)

@CommissarKhaine: If only I was musically minded... (quiet silence without interruption or distraction works best for me)

Right, so I agreed to give up painting last night to watch the idiot box with the wife - hence no update. Did get a chance this afternoon though, so here we go!

Got through the Badab Black wash. Started with a mix 1:1 with Gloss Varnish, but that looked too weak, so added more Badab Black to make it 2:1. Subtle, but I think good (you can always do another layer if you end up too subtle, harder to soften it later!). Got through everyone pretty quick - if there is anything I like about painting, it's the stages where things move quicker! Token Nob:

Decided it was time to get the Meganob and Painboy moved along. Touched up the cloak, helmets and shoulder pad with Dark Angels Green (at last update, they had had a 1:1 or 2:1 Dark Angels Green/Chaos Black wash)

Back to the Boyz and added a Chainmail edge highlight (again, subtle)

And then back to the Meganob and Painboy for a 2:1 Dark Angels Green/Snot Green highlight:

Dat iz all - fer now!

Loving the green on the coat! Chainmail is subtle but worth it, like the effect.

Yep, cloak and metal looking good What colour cloak was the painboy getting?

There must be music! Random mp3 through the stereo, with the added bonus of I can keep track of time by setting the playlist for 3 hours, and know I have to put tools down after that extra '10 minutes' just to finish that bit. Not so good with films, even if I've seen 'em a thousand times before. I had Brazil and Casshern on the other day for a bit of visual stimulation, kept turning the sound up on Brazil and just blatantly watched big chunks of Casshern. Didn't help the modelling much at all

Yeah, pure music for me as well. The soft stuff too, putting on metal is not a good idea, headbanging and modelling don' tmix

@CommissarKhaine: Green cloak is my best chance to practise a smooth green blend

@monkeytroll: The Painboy cloak (and the Nob cloak for that matter) will be a dirty white, built up from brown (Calthan Brown from memory...) In fact, there are a lot of details that will be in this colour across the Shoota Boyz - some straps, loincloths, glyhs etc - which leads me to...

@Matt.Kingsley:... very Christmas-y But a dirty, violent Christmas-y The shiny is the Gloss Varnish mixed in to everything (which actually makes the photography harder) - don't worry, it will all be matt-ed in the end (well, except for the parts I want glossy )

I really like the detail on your ork skin it goes together so well with the colour scheme.

Glad you like it Aboucher.

Today's progress!

1:1 Dark Angels Green/Snot Green highlight:

Snot Green highlight:

1:1 Snot Green/Golden Yellow highlight:

Golden Yellow highlight:

Thaka Green wash:

You know - I have no idea if the above images are in the right order

Badab Black wash:

'Urty shoulder pad glyph decal:

Touch up of Iyanden Darksun:

Devlan Mud wash:

Enjoyed this a lot more today - must be the concentrating on only two miniatures - though this does run into the danger of starting on an area again before it has had a chance to dry (and I couldn't be bothered getting the hair dryer out...) Or maybe I was just in the mood. Wasted a lot more paint though - I really need to build a wet palette... Actually looking forward to building up the Meganob armour (should probably alternate with the dirty white cloth of everyone else...)

Catchya!

@Cutthroatcure, monkeytroll, CommissarKhaine, Gitsplitta: Thanks!

@CommissarKhaine: Yup - all the way to bone coloured - starting with... Graveyard Earth apparently:

@Gitsplitta: Just as much for me to remember later as anything else

So, if yesterday my painting waxed, tonight it waned Got the Graveyard Earth above done. Started on a Calthan Brown base for the dirty white cloth...
1) Either I didn't shake the Calthan Brown enough, or I'm finally thinning my paints enough, but coverage wasn't up to Foundation levels. I'm going to need to have another go at this...

2) Discovered that the Meganob actually has visible trousers - doh! Went back and Chaos Blacked in some details on the Meganob for later...

As I said, waned tonight - so not much to report...

Catchya!

Currently Graveyard Earth over Iyanden Darksun - I will be working it up through Desert Yellow (I think...) and Bleached Bone... (Probably with another Devlan Mud wash in there for good measure...)

Post by: Arakasi

@HAZZER: I thought you might be thinking of a whole army group shot... I promise to do one when the first of the following two things happen - I play another game (not Vassal) or I finish these Boyz (Everyone else is stuck in Battlefoam - it may depress me otherwise to bring them all out...)

@CommissarKhaine: Taking a while is my MO

Right. Took two nights off. Did some more Calthan Brown tonight. Got through 5 boyz (one below) and decided the Meganob trousers should be Green, not White - so I'm going to have to redo that (thankfully didn't get too far down the white path...) Apparently, my Calthan Brown is great straight from the dropper bottle - so hopefully I won't need to go over everyone more than twice from now on... touching up the bases too as I go...

Feel free to start pressuring me back to my modelling - I think I'm ready for the excuse!

Catchya!

The green itself is looking good on the trousers, but won't it look on the tabletop like your nobz are 'without' trousers?

@monkeytroll: inspects scalpel and glue...

@CommissarKhaine: Ummm... hopefully not - hopefully it will look like green trousers... (or at least match the cape rather than the face). Got the Orkhide Shade down on it, so Arakasi presents: The wrong trousers - Meganobz edition:

@Gitspltta: ...inspects paint Okay, sorry monkeytroll, paint wins tonight (I didn't feel like not painting, which is a very good reason to actually paint!). More Calthan Brown down - a Boy (not shown) and the two Nobz:

Actually, that pic turned out really nice, if I do say so myself...

@M0rdain: I expect it would. Start with the new Savage Orc Boyz from Fantasy... (wont' be making an appearance in Da Dark Angelz - sorry!)

@HAZZER: Thanks again!

Hmmm... that is all.

And (except for the cape) - that Mad Dok figure is the stock model? Who'd have thought that was even possible for me?

frus·tra·tion /frəˈstrāSHən/
Noun:
1. Calthan Brown. I'm back up to that Painboy putting a second coat on... (done the second coat on all the Boyz and Nobz to the left)
2. Boomwagons. I'm playing two games of Vassal via email with the same list, both include Boomwagons. Both were Dawn of War. Both have rolled 1's for "Don't Press Dat" for both Turns 2 and 3. I think it is a sign...

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2012/01/22 19:55:48

Post by: CommissarKhaine

Mental note: must avoid Calthan brown... Boomwagons don't fit you Arakasi, it's like reserving your koptas, Lady Luck has it in for you in those cases .

Apparently not - and I had such wonderful ideas for Da Dark Angelz some time this century...

Well, ploughed through the second layer of Calthan Brown. I'll need to do a third layer in some places, but that should hopefully not take too long. Then I can get to the interesting stuff!

Also, went to start the highlighting on the Meganob armour, but realised I could see too much of the Iyanden Darksun basecoat still, so added another layer of Graveyard Earth. Should be good to go re a Devlan Mud wash followed by build up to Bleached Bone...

Catchya!
