Y'know Arakasi, I just want to say thank you.
Thank you for putting up this blog, seeing it all together shows how much work has gone into it.
I always check every update, even if I don't comment, to gain inspiration and just to see what marvel you're building next.
So, congrats on being awesome.

You realise that you are about one painting guide and a points per character/wargear list away from your own codex?, Now that would be worth double cool points on top of the million points you already have

Meganobz WIP Codename: Predator
@monkeytroll: Went through all of the Nobz Sluggas and Shootas - none have a left fed belt feed Did notice that the Boyz Big Shoota has a left fed belt feed though - bonus - it'll probably end up easier to convert too!
@wib: You'll have to do better than that
@Asylum_Inmate: I'll add that to the idea stewing pot!
@Santobell: Thanks! Current ETA is April 2012 - though Da Boss is prone to radical changes of planz... (I think I told you 18 months last November, then it was end of this year... now early next year...)

Love Predator! Have you consider making his left hand point to the enemy instead of holding a gun? The cc weapon can easily be a PK, and you've got a twin-linked shoota already, so you're free to mess around with the hand. That or have him give the finger
18980
Post by: Arakasi
@samwellfrm: Better late than never! Did the catchup post on page 50 help? Anyway - welcome to the madness (madness may be slightly less than monkeytroll's blog...)
@CommissarKhaine: Thanks! I am pretty pleased with his (and the others - they look better lined up together!) progress. The Twin-Linked Shoota was Morgrim's original - just there for feel - maybe permanent, maybe not. It did make me think whether I should repurpose the left arm for one of those "taktikal" displays - but then I can't have the right arm leaning over activating it anymore... the cc weapon *is* the PK - so other options (pointing, giving the finger etc) are entertain-able at this point
Due to bank/public holidays - I only have three more nights next week before Platinum Devil 3 - and still need to get at least Meganobz Codename: Lightning and Morgrim to this level (free standing and playable) - and Snikrot and 5 Kommandos over this weekend...

I think if you could somehow get your hands on the Space hulk tyranid skull spine from one of the Termies, THAT would be better in the left hand!
18980
Post by: Arakasi
Now *that* is a cool idea...
30344
Post by: monkeytroll
Predator looking dope there.
Like the ' pk', very cool, the skull would be awesome, but can you get one in time?
And yeah, I just opened a new box of nobs and noticed the same thing. I'm sure there was more than one left fed gun around for the orks, but obviously just me getting confused again
18980
Post by: Arakasi
"Time is of no importance... only cool is important" - no, I won't have one by end of next week unless I break open my unopened SH box - which, whilst I considered it, it was only very briefly... These guys won't be finished modelling anytime soon methinks (but should be playable)

Post by: Gitsplitta
Hey Arakasi, haven't had time to read you mega-post, so I will refrain from commenting on that until I can give it the time it deserves. Love the "Predator" though... really nice balance and feel to the figure, love the extra bits on the arm part of the PK, gun above the head is excellent. You might consider modelingl some kind of primitive sight thingie that runs from the guns to his head or left eye. I'm thinking the cross-hair sight from the ork shootas worn as a monocle with a couple of wires running to the base of the gun mount? Just a thought.

Post by: samwellfrm
The catch-up on page 50 was a huge help. I would have been too intimidated otherwise.
18980
Post by: Arakasi
@Gitsplitta: What!?!? Read it. Read it *now*. Or all my work will be in vain... I'll add the sight idea to the stewing pot. It's not grabbing me yet, but who knows what bitz and fiddling might achieve?
@samwellfrm: Glad I made the effort then!

I would never interfere with your creative juice flow my friend... just a thought, that's all.
And I will read your manifesto today!

Post by: Arakasi
I understand - and your thoughts - as is everyone's - are very much appreciated. I'd much prefer everyone share their ideas regardless rather than attempt to guess what I may or may not agree with. Plus - I will try it. Just because I am not in awe of it now doesn't mean I won't change my mind once I've tried it. Or it may just end up on another model, or lead to something better...
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
How about a little wire from the barrels that comes down that he holds in his teeth... so he can aim it that way?? Kind of a really primitive heads-up display (as he turns his head, the gun moves around).
:-)
OK, now I'm just being silly...
18980
Post by: Arakasi
Yes - now you are just being silly
Actually - I had toyed with the idea of connecting the separated (one on each shoulder) shootas of Thunderhammer and Lightning - a bar or chain - perhaps with trophies. Nothing stopping that from being connected to his head...

@MaximusPrime, Juvieus Kaine, moonshine, Eckeon: Thanks!
@Juvieus Kaine, moonshine: Unfortunately - no. I'm only in Coventry 3 nights per week for work, without independent transport - I don't even get in to GW Coventry! All (well now most) of my hobby gear is in Coventry though - so it is also my main opportunity to work on da boyz - another reason not to be venturing too far during the week. I assume they have a hobby night or something? I *might* be able to organise something (work permitting)...

Hopefully left long enough to avoid append-icitis...
WIP Meganobz Codename: Lightning
Found a use for Ghazzy's Power Klaw The other half will be on his right hand. Just wanted to make sure he had *a* weapon before bed. Also, you can see more of the arm armour build (still lacking details!) and the start of the gauntlets.
I think this is as far as these guys are going to get before Platinum Devil 3. I only have two nights left (three if I pack stuff for Friday night...) and I need to get Morgrim to non blu-tack/clever balancing act stage. Also need to put backpacks on three Kommandos and complete assembling two more - managed to get Snikrot together in Scotland, as well as the prep work up to where I am - but didn't quite get to my goal of finishing all of them (assembly that is)...
Night!

Morgrim scratched 'iz 'ead - "Does dat mean we 'ave ta share da loot?" "No Boss." Morgrim's fingas relaxed. "Well, dat's alright den!"

Like the klaw, looks brutal. Nice use of the little armour pads too. Will it be a single klaw on each hand, or additional blades?
18980
Post by: Arakasi
@SilverMK2: I'm trying to start a trend...
@Wazzdig Dagga: The Meganobz will continue to be fun to put together.... thanks!
@monkeytroll: Single klaw on each hand, barring a better suggestion (no - we don't need tracks on the hands!)
So - trying to get Morgrim to "playable" stage. Took longer than I'd hoped - of course... Here he is on his "shoot me" base...
Hopefully we have dealt with the leaning issues brought up previously...
And here he is slotted in on his scenic base - this time there is no difference between his positioning in the photo above and the photo below
Tune in tomorrow for Kommandos...

Nothing final yet - just blu-tacked. I am going to have to do some work on the pelt to make it follow the contour of the shoulder pads/top rather than creating a cavity between the shoulder pads and adding unnecessary height. Will need to fill out the size a bit too to match the head...
If so - what are you thinking? A hood perhaps? I have plans for a lot of cables for the Hammer - I may get carried away and add them to his head too....
@CommissarKhaine: I feel the same

Post by: monkeytroll
Not even a small track unit? A really, really tiny one?
Just a flywheel maybe?
I like the single klaw anyway, it's a good look, was just wondering
Cables however are always good Wire his head up. Too many wires is like too much dakka.
18980
Post by: Arakasi
Santobell: Doesn't change the reason for your suggestion though
Imperial Monkey: Images done (though not uploaded to Dakka yet) and write-up started... I'll see if I can get it uploaded and PM'ed to you - but I'm busy preparing for Platinum Devil 3!
@monkeytroll: Maybe a flywheel Too true...
Right - here we are pre Platinum Devil - Morgrim and Da Grey Knightz... I mean Da Deffwing!
(No progress - just thought they looked good all together!)
Snikrot's Kommandos - 14 Kommandos including Snikrot and 2 Burnas
Made up of 6 previously completed Slugga/Choppa Boyz, 2 previouslyasembled and undercoated Burnas (one Kommando, one standard), 4 metal Kommandos, 1 FW Kommando and 1 metal Snikrot. Not much customisation so far here...
I seem to have two of the same metal bodies in my metal Kommandos - so some "quick" swaps to differentiate them. More to come sometime in the far future...
And the FW Kommando. Again - much more customisation to do - gun barrel need drilling - probably get a sight and silencer - plus more Kommando-ish bitz...
Now to see if I can actually fit everything I need in my bags/cases...

@dantay_xv: But I want to be able to use him as a counts as Ghazghkull
@Matt.Kingsley: Da Stormboyz I believe...
Day one of Platinum Devil 3 is over. Da Dark Angelz faced Eldar, Tau and 2x Guard. Mini batreps in due course - but we have a lot to make up for on day two...

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I NEED THAT STORMBOY KIT!!!!
Something else I've said time and time again is:
Matt.Kingsley wrote:LOOKIN' GOOD!

Post by: Arakasi
Thanks Matt!
Right - mini batreps (and more pics) still to come - but here is the Platinum Devil 3 Da Dark Angelz contingent - the full 1500pts (remove Kommandos for 1250pts, remove Meganobz and Trukk for 1000pts):
As you can see - quite some work still to go....
And - the rest of Da Dark Angelz - doze dat got left behind
That's right - that's it! Nuffin else assembled even...
So I decided to get back into the painting. Decided against finishing stuff and instead look to bring up the general presentation for Partick Crucible 2 in 3 weeks - so some Shoota Boyz and Nobz got their skin finished off. Before and after pic:
Progress!
Also repaired Da Big Mek - who lost his Boss Pole again, and almost his Burna sight apparently...
I should probably concentrate on the vehicles - but they need some repairs / remagnetisation adjustments that I've been putting off.... I have separated out the reinforced rams though so I can practice the green and bone armour...
Till next update!

Your update on page 50 was a great idea as it allows folk like me who don't drop in all the time to catch up with where you're at as looking at 50+ pages can be quite intimidating.

I dont know if you are still trying to do something with the hands or not. But a quick suggestion would be Black ork hands if you didnt want to convert them. Would be just a quick cut and switch. But like everyone before me has said. Those Meganobz look fantastic. I like the look of the Meganob normally but yours have so much character and uniqueness to them. Now I'm gonna have to convert mine, not to the extent that you did to yours but something to make them each a little differant. Great work again Arakasi.

@Gitsplitta: I know!
@Brother Bartius: Looking forward to it!
@schank23: The Black Orc hands are an option - I'll have to reconsider when I return to them once my painting enthusiasm runs dry (shouldn't be long...) Thanks!
@CommissarKhaine: Thanks! I'll take your belated luck to Partick Crucible 2 instead
@Panic: Pesky Kans! In hindsight, I think I made my biggest Taktikal errors of the weekend in our game - my original plan of breaking through your lines in order to have my way with your grotz was... optimistic at best. I think I should have played to my strength (speed, manoeuvre) and not yours (ramming my army down your throat). Still, it led to an entertaining Ork on Grot brawl in the middle - and I hadn't lost *that* much (though, you still had your 3rd turn to go...)
Right - so I thought to myself - how much more Ork skin is there to go? I can get through that right? Apparently not. Managed to get the Scab Red Wash on all of it though (got the consistency better this time, also applied with more patience/care) - but not the Ogryn Flesh or the inevitable Thraka Green tidy up...
Yeah - the photo is bad - it's more to show the breadth of what I'm up to than the details of Red Scab washes... (same for below)
The rest of Da Dark Angelz, broken down for painting - because I am a masochist...
I want to finish the Ork skin (because then it's done!), and then do up all the red - but I have a suspicion I'd make better looking progress working on the Painboy, Meganob Warboss and that Nobz Trukk...

18980
Post by: Arakasi
@feet of claw: Will do!
@Eckeon: It feels like... plastic?
@Imperial Monkey: For you maybe
@fleet of claw: Remove too many and I don't have any left! Thankfully, that seems to occur on rare occasions... (Triple Skorchas after having one's Trukk exploded for example. Who arms their Kans with Skorchas???)
Right, so skin is complete. Did a much better job on the second batch - didn't feel the need to touch up with Thraka Green. Collected all the red together - well - all the untouched red - and added the first highlight. Again - hard to see in the pic - but I'm not taking individual photos of all of them at this point! You'll just have to trust me that it is already making a difference...
And that's me for painting/modelling updates for a week - next week - Orlando! I'll probably endeavour to get Imperial Monkey's battle report up (with Imperial Monkey's able assistance) and my Platinum Devil 3 mini reports during downtime at airports, evenings etc. Then I have one last week of paint before Partick Crucible 2. I was looking through the Partick Crucible photos - my army will look a *lot* better this time round

Right - safely back from Orlando and more holidays!
Still concentrating on the painting before Partick Crucible 2 this weekend - ash clouds pending...
Pre-Orlando - First Red Highlight (1:1 Blazing Orange/Mechrite Red + Gloss Varnish)
I can only be bothered showing one up close at a time now. You can make out more detail, and it will make my catchup posts easier!
Post-Orlando - Second Red Highlight (Blazing Orange + Gloss Varnish)
17 "miniatures", 23 "parts" - I am *so* going to look forward to returning to modelling next week... Anyway - in case you were interested, the current plan is:
1) Paint for Partick Crucible 2 this weekend.
2) Partick Crucible 2
3) Finish painting Gitsplitta's GMS trade (though I'm really trying to bring da boyz up to the same level so I can do all the fiddly bits together...)
4) Finish modelling Artsoldier35's GMS trade and twin (so I can get onto the painting and buy my airbrush!)
5) Warhammer World with endtransmission (July)
Somewhere in there, probably at airports, I need to:
1) Finish Battle Report against Imperial Monkey and PM it to him to update/comment/improve etc
2) Finish Mini Batreps for Platinum Devil 3
3) Write up Partick Crucible 2
4) Write up Battle Reports vs endtransmission at Warhammer World in July
5) Page 60 mini update post
And now - correspondence catchup! slice'n'dice wrote:Hmmm, such a long process, but it will be so worth it Hopefully next time we get around to having a game, we can have two almost fully painted armies I think that will be a first in our entire gaming history (Blood bowl doesn't count). @The Good Green: Yeah, like Mars is just a little further than the Moon...
@Gitsplitta: Not at all - shared fault at worst I haven't added more paint to yours for weeks (months?!) - I think I'm at the stage of adding metal into the chips - but was waiting for more metal to do... also the Boss Poles are ready for their decals - and I was putting that off too... New week, new progress. 2:1 Scorched Brown/Gloss Varnish added into the chipping - just the Boltgun or Chainmail left to do! With this step I've finally caught up to a batch of previous red... Anyway - mini pic tonight is Skarag's Trukk - showing engine, Big Shoota and Big Shoota ammo boxes at this stage:
And a pic that I prepared earlier but hadn't put up yet, hopefully to persuade me to finish modelling Artsoldier35's Trukk - The Twin Trukk:
Didn't have the rear wheels and suspension on previously...
So tomorrow night I might put the Boltgun/Chainmail into the scratches - starting with Gitsplitta's Stormboy Nob (though on the Green, not the Red!), or start moving the Twin Trukk along, or both! You never know...

Post by: Arakasi
@Santobell: Sounds like a plan...
Right - missed my update yesterday - I knew there was a reason I don't try to do painting *and* modelling in the one evening (late - or should I say early - bed time...)
Let's start off with Gitsplitta's GMS Stormboy Nob:
Finally got around to doing the Chainmail in the battle damage on the dark green armour - mainly the Rokkit Pack. While I was at it, brought all of the started (painting) but incomplete minis for my 1000pts - minus the ones I've been working on the last 3 weeks - to red completeness - ie Chainmail in the battle damage on the red. (2:1 or 3:1 Chainmail/Gloss Varnish - the Chainmail drys out quick!) Checking the Stormboyz Nobz - not a lot left to do! Decals (Dark Angel corpse and banners), tattoos, Dark Angel face details, base, further details, weathering etc Might try my hand at the decals next week. Been meaning to utilise my knowledge from the Forgeworld Tank Masterclass... Still don't have Gitsplitta's special Bad Moonz decals - so may just go ahead with mine and see what he wants done
And then, of course, I had to do some modelling - the twin Trukk:
Didn't realise the pic I put up before *was not glued*! This has now been rectified! Also, attached the narrow rear wheel guards which I had put together ages ago. (Different from Artsoldier35's Trukk. I'm going to call the original Artsoldier35's Trukk, and this one the Twin Trukk, but until I put the Arakasi numba plate on one of them they are interchangeable as far as I'm concerned...) The cab shown here is actually from Artsolider35's Trukk - so I still need to make another one. This is probably the first picture that clearly shows the driver though...
So, that was yesterday. Tonight, I brought the rest of the red (the guys I've been working on for the last 3 weeks) up to completion with the Chainmail in the battle damage. All 1000 points is now complete as far as skin and red goes - wahoo! A Shoota to celebrate:
There are only two more guys who haven't had a recent individual photo shots now... (and some of the others are looking particularly impressive - if I do say so myself - especially the Deffkoptas and Nobz....) Don't know what colour I want to do next - dark green (armour and clothing), white (robes / shirts), bone (Deffwing armour) or black (Rav'nwing)... will think about over the weekend...
And finally, a little more progress on the Twin Trukk:
Put the front bumper in and the radiator - again, going for a slightly different look to Artsolider35's Trukk. I'm working towards doing the front wheels...
And that's it for another week! Thanks for stopping by!

The rokkit pack on the stormboy looks awesome - and you've done a good job in distinguishing between the green armour and green skin.

@Gitsplitta: What do I need? What do you want? I think if you can hang off sending my Ork, I'll put the decals on my Stormboyz Nob next week to give you and idea of what I'm thinking of. Then we can discuss Bad Moon decal replacements. I think only size and perhaps colour are going to matter... I have to think about unit markings too...
@slice'n'dice: Thanks! The Space Marine's armour is in better shape because up to very recently he hadn't been expecting an Ork Nob to drop out of the sky on him!
@schank23: Thanks! I'm sure they will. I feel I get better with each one - learning new tricks and such. Though I really need to move up to Looted Wagons and/or Battlewagons...

Right - missed my update again last night - so here goes...
I wanted to do the decals on my Stormboy Nob to give Gitsplitta an idea of what we can do for his GMS one. Step one was to find my Forgeworld Tank Masterclass notes. No luck, but I remember writing them up on DakkaDakka, so a quick search later and I find them!
Decal/Transfer Information Download
I also found this: Decals 101
To give an idea of where I'm headed - my previous painted tattoos:
So I got a Nob arm and a Boy arm and started a test run... Left to right, top to bottom - the arms, with gloss varnish on the top halves, the transfers (slightly larger one for the Nob), Micro Set followed by the decal followed by Micro Sol, dried before adding another layer of Micro Sol, dried before adding another layer of Micro Sol.
Apologies for the picture quality... should look better when I do white transfers on green Ork skin... (I used the black transfers because I don't plan to use them, and they are the same size as the white ones...)
Finally - after taking a pin to the bumps in the middle and adding a final layer of MicroSol:
Actually looking pretty good here, photo quality not withstanding. I think if I trim the decals further to remove excess between the axes - especially at the top and bottom - I'll be good to go!
Got some more work done on the Twin Trukk too...
Beginnings of the front wheels...
And on to tonight!
The boring bit - no photos - I have gloss varnished all my Boyz upper arms in preparation for a transfer frenzy tomorrow evening - watch this space!
And then back on to the Twin Trukk...
Here we have the front suspension and wheels complete. You can see the benefits of some new tools here. My mitre is coming in very handy - I've been using it to cut sprue at 30 degrees to make the upper front shock mounts (also to attach the rear wheel guards at the front). Also, the circular discs at the top were made from a circular compass like thing with a blade - and then the centre drilled out. Between having the original Trukk as an example and my new tools, I *think* things are progressing a bit faster
And now for some housekeeping...
@Santobell: I think a Dark Angelz ThundaHawx will need to wait - awesome idea that it is though... Looking forward to facing off your Skave again in the future
@Joske De Veteraan: Glad you like dem Orks! Welcome!
@HadoukenAvenger: Thanks! And will do! Make sure you check back occasionally from hibernation...
@Eckeon: I may just go with the bone for the Deffwing next - it certainly is letting the team down at the moment... right after some tattoos...
Thanks for visiting!

Sounds like a plan, why are you using gloss varnish for tranfers ? I have not used gloss varnish with transfers and they come out fine. The suspension on the trukk loofs very impressive though.
I was just thinking, by the time you have finished this completly (all 1000+ orks) the great crusade will have started !

Very cool Arakasi...
36184
Post by: Alfndrate
That is one cool suspension system
18980
Post by: Arakasi
@moonshine: The theory goes that gloss varnish provides a smooth flat surface for the transfer - which might otherwise lead to frosting. Of course, it may not be completely necessary because I'm using Micro Set as well, but it does have the additional advantage of protecting my hard work on the skin. If I completely stuff up, I should be able to strip back to the varnish... Not that it will help here, but it also should assist with washes... Eventually I'll matt varnish over the top and you will never know!
@moonshine, Gitsplitta, Alfndrate: Thanks. I'd hope it would be pretty cool by now given all the practise I've had!

Post by: moonshine
But afterwards won't you orks all have shiney arms ?
18509
Post by: endtransmission
moonshine wrote:But afterwards won't you orks all have shiney arms ?
That's what the final matt varnish is for
Matt surfaces are matt because it's a very rough, gritty (though very very fine) surface texture that doesn't reflect light as well. If you try to place a transfer onto this surface you will trap thousands of tiny air bubbles under the transfer, which will lead to a slightly silvery look. By putting a coat of gloss over the top, you have a completely smooth surface with no bubbles.
Arakasi, shouldn't there be a final layer of gloss over the top of the transfer to seal it in and smooth out the bumpy edge a little?
Glad the micro-sol/micro-set worked. I need to get some of that for my marine shoulder pads
31627
Post by: FantasyBob
I like the suspension! had you some better shoot of them or a scheme of how did you realized them?
18980
Post by: Arakasi
@moonshine: What endtransmission said. Though I am liking the glossy look on the Ork skin - I may need to reapply it (though maybe not pure gloss, maybe a matt/gloss mix...)
@endtransmission: There should be a final layer of gloss over the top of the transfer to seal it in - just can't be bothered on the test arms I'll be trying the Micro Set/Sol out on the Dark Angels corpses shoulder pads - so you can see how it goes!
@FantasyBob: I have some of my previous tries - but I'll see what I can do...
18980
Post by: Arakasi
Got home late
Attempted to give myself RSI cutting out transfers/decals - aren't they cute little butterflies... I mean Orky Bloodaxe crossed axes!
And the outcome... Shoota Boy:
Another Shoota Boy (that's all of them photographed recently now!):
Smaller photos because the quality isn't so good
And Gitsplitta's Stormboy Nob...
I think I am going to have to do another coat of Micro Sol on some, if not all of them...
That is everyone's left shoulder - except for the Deffkoptas (Rav'nwing) - which will have a different left shoulder icon...
Ran out of time - so no more work on the Twin Trukk this week
Next week...
1) More transfers! Specifically, need to do the Stormboyz Nobz banners... but also right shoulders for everyone!
2) More Twin Trukk - engine exhaust, start of cab, hood...
3) And if I have time/inclination - paint! Probably that ugly yellow that should be bone (Da Deffwing)...
Catchya!

Looking good. Do you think these are actually tattoos, or painted on before the battle?
If it's a tattoo, I'm not 100% sure it'd ever get to pure white. A wash of green ink over it might help blend it in a little?
18980
Post by: Arakasi
@slice'n'dice: Thanks!
@endtransmission: Going for tattoos rather than war paint - but I forgot to mention they are looking a bit bright/pure. I was actually thinking a wash of grey to shade it and take the bite off, but green might work too - I guess I have some experimenting ahead!

The last time I was in the hobby I must have had some bad experiences with them - I certainly wasn't planning to use them (as evidenced by my previous hand painted tattoo aspirations) - but after the Forgeworld Tank Masterclass I gained a better appreciation for them. This is my first outing with them in over a decade. Nothing is perfect yet - I'm still learning - but so far it has worked a lot better than I would have previously feared. They certainly come out crisper and more uniform (though not necessarily a good thing for Orks...) - and even with all the work so far, much faster than hand painting them too!
I'm actually looking forward to completing the right arm tattoos and shading them...

Cant wait to see your mob completed. I always love seeing what you come up with next. You are part of the reason I started my Brazen Klawz mob.Great stuff Arakasi.

Post by: Arakasi
You and me both Too much decals, too little modelling - I'm starting to feel the pull again... Always happy to inspire another Ork blog for me to follow (your Brazen Klawz are coming along very nicely - faster than Da Dark Angelz!)
So - I think I've almost had it with decals! As promised last week - I finally have my Stormboy Nob's Boss Pole(s) decalised - Gitsplitta - what do you want me to do for yours?
Yours has a red banner on the left, which I can do in the same style as mine on the right - or change any details you prefer. Your yellow banner is up to you. I expect at least one Bad Moon decal, but you can take your pick and/or supply the others... Black should look perfect. The banner is 6mm tall at the start, contracting to 3mm at the end, and about 1.5cm length of space. The transfers I've used range from 2mmx2mm (the 7) to 7mmx5mm (the black winged red lightning bolt) - but are mostly 3-4mm square-ish - with 1-2mm spacing between.
Hope that all made sense!
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Well, if you don't mind, you can just give me a straight yellow banner, perhaps with the tail decorated but leave the wide area open & I can apply the bad moon decals myself. It's not like it will make a difference whether you or I place the decals. Will that suit?
18980
Post by: Arakasi
Perfectly acceptable!
32369
Post by: schank23
Faster yes but you have put way more work into converting yours than I have. Mine are simpler conversions your are alot more complex. When I get more experiance under my belt I hope to be able to come up with models that have more character. My warboss is the most converted model I've done to date and I spent alot of time on him. So if that the kind of work you put into all of your models I can understand the slower progress. But I think it will be worth it in the end. your vehicles are astounding. I think that might be enuff brown nosing for now lol.

Decals on Gitsplitta's GMS Stormboy Nob - space left for Gitsplitta to apply two decals to both sides of the yellow boss pole...
You can also see the DA decal on the SM shoulder pad
Added some exhausts to the Twin Trukk:
(requires some GS)
And started work on a cab of its very own:
(Managed to spend quite a bit of time on the Trukk due to only needing to apply a few new transfers and Micro Sol to all the existing ones)
Probably will take a look at what's left to do on those Stormboyz Nobz tomorrow night before looking at the hood for the Twin Trukk. Starting on the bone will probably be next week now...

@monkeytroll: Pretty much. Touching up - and the base! I had actually toyed with putting up some side-by-side pics of the Trukks - I guess now I'll have to (and remember to put up some closer pics of the suspension as asked for by someone else previously...) Just thought it would be self indulgent (I do like the look of them together...)
@Gitsplitta: I had had the idea of a Trukk (and Deffkopta) Show Off thread a *loooong* time ago - back when CommisarKhaine was doing his as well. I was waiting until I actually finished one of mine before starting it myself. You can see how that turned out... I swear though, when I finally get to doing a board, it is going to have to be an Orky race track!
@Gitsplitta, prototype_X: I fully support any Trukk based competition - but unless it has a 2 year time window, or happens to coincide with me finishing a Trukk - I'll sadly not be able to enter! I'm getting faster (I think) - but not quite that fast yet! Maybe I could be a judge

Four things to cover!
One - Thursday night's update:
Who's bright idea was it to put Space Marine corpses on bases and then paint the Space Marine first *Very* fiddly getting the base painted without disturbing the Space marine paint work... Oh - and clear pictures of the Space Marine shoulder pad transfers - much easier than tattoos!
Some more work on the Twin Trukk:
As you can see, the front has a different, less boxy design - working off suggestions from CommissarKhaine - where has he got to?
And for monkeytroll - a side by side (though the other is missing it's additional cab detail...)
Two - Finally got my Partick Crucible 2 battle report up - just in time to have to write new ones with endtransmission next weekend...
Da Dark Angelz Crash (and Burn at) Partick Crucible 2
Three - Right, you guys have convinced me! Look out for an announcement/new thread on Thursday regarding a Trukk competition
Fourth - other housekeeping...
@endtransmission: Good idea! Conveniently, I will have them all with me... (though knowing the rivalry between 'Eavy Metal and Forgeworld, they will probably tell me transfers are for wusses and that real men *paint* their tattoos...)
@Artsoldier35: If I waited until everyone was ready (me included!) it would never happen. Alternatively, you have until the 30th June to get to Washington

30 JUNE? We won't even leave VA until the 11th of July. Then it's a long crosscountry road trip. Oh well, maybe I'll get in on round 2 or 3.

@bigfish: I'm thinking of a combined Trukk show-off thread/competition - so existing complete Trukks would be acceptable entries. Of course, that is assuming you meant you don't need any *additional* Trukks. Come to think of it, what is the Orky word for heresy?
@Gitsplitta: Thanks again!
@Artsoldier35: Given my comment above to bigfish, and endtransmission's intuition, I think you'll be fine!
@monkeytroll: I'll paint mine if you paint yours!

Hopefully
Let's start with Tuesday's progress...
Twin Trukk ( GMS):
Hood taking shape...
Tattoos:

Shoota Boyz from da Fif an' Sixf Taktikal Mobz
Tonight's progress - filled in the details on the Stormboyz Nobz - we are running very close to complete!
Still need to highlight the metal (Mithril Silver edge highlights). Base will need grass - but I am leaving Gitsplitta's bare for him (that's right isn't it?). Should probably shade/highlight the decals... Small details you may not be able to see - blood under the Power Klaws and coming from the Space Marine's mouth corner. Added white lightning effects to the Power Klaws and Power Sword (very subtle). Bases shaded and highlighted. Space Marine eyes and teeth done. Think that's about it...
What is wrong with the above pictures?
And finally, a little more progress on the Twin Trukk:
Needs clean up. Ran out of 2mm strip
What else? Oh - Arakasi's Inaugural Trukk Rally 2012 is up!

Badass trukks Arakasi! Always love seein a fellow Mek progress!
And my god.... the Nobz are freaking AMAZING!!
As to the 2mm strip- why dontcha just cut your own? thats all i do, and it works fine- just is a bit more time consuming!
18980
Post by: Arakasi
Thanks Ramos Asura!
Spent the weekend at Warhammer World, got three excellent battles in against endtransmission, learnt some stuff on the 'Eavy Metal Masterclass (mainly that I have a *long* way to go...) - details to follow at some point...
Cleaned up "the room" in Coventry. Discovered more 2mm strip! (Was hiding with my Meganobz WIP) - though you are right, I *could* cut my own - I even have an appropriate tool I think...
The 'Eavy Metal Masterclass inspired me to start the Dark Angels Green on da Boyz. Doing it across two dozen boyz quickly nipped that in the butt. Also, applied Thraka Green and Ogryn Flesh washes to the tattoos - looking much better. Been too tired and slack to put up pics though yet - so you'll have to wait - probably the weekend (have been managing to take them though!)
Now I've run out of Chaos Black! (Go on Ramos Asura, suggest an alternative to that!)
Pics to come...

Psh. obviously you need to make your own by use of black ink and arcane sorceries of pigment! then you must make an incredibly long and arduous journey to the Fortress of Color, and fight the Black Knight for the holy pot of Chaos Black ( tm). So get on it, Arakasi!! Quest away!

Post by: endtransmission
The battles were great. They all felt much closer than previous games as I actually moved around the board a bit
18980
Post by: Arakasi
@Ramos Asura: I sent a Grot. It was easier to threaten one We'll see how reliable that turns out...
@endtransmission: You moved a bit - I felt I was covering the entire board! (It will be interesting to see how far some of my units ranged when I write up the battle reports...)
Right, did someone mention pics?
Thraka Green wash on the tattoo, and I think the Dark Angels Green/Black shading as well. I originally did 1:1 - but that seemed too dark. I think the final mix was 2:1 or 3:1... just eyeballed it in the end...
Plus Ogryn Flesh wash on the tattoo. This was the second batch of shading...
And shading on the Big Mek - well - the Space Marine corpse anyway. Thought it might be a bit clearer in this pic...
Discovering my Chaos Black to be out, moved on to the first highlight - 1:1 Dark Angels Green/Snot Green.
And the Big Mek...
Probably was a bit heavy handed with the shading - so went back and cleaned up/highlighted with Dark Angels Green - over the previous layer...
Again, probably easier to see on the Big Mek. One of the things the 'Eavy Metal guys mentioned is that the level of shading/highlighting they do doesn't look right until the very end, If it looks right before then, you've peaked early! This mirrors my experience doing my red and Ork skin. Let's hope it pans out for my green!
Tired of green, I decided to actually progress the Stormboyz closer to completion - with Chainmail highlights. Very fiddly! (Lots of small bits to do). Noticed I missed painting the Power Klaw hose underneath - doh! Probably could use some final Mithril Silver highlights...
And da 'uvver one. Now tired of metal. Can you even see the highlights? Think I will need to do some modelling next week...
Catchya!

You sent a grot to The Fortress Of Colour? Oh man, you just know he's going to come back with some yellow 'coz it tastes of squig'
Tats look good, and everything else is definitely progressing. Any colours you're not sick of now? Certainly time for some choppin' an' stickin'.

It's all looking wonderful Arakasi. Stick with it man... you'll get there!
18980
Post by: Arakasi
I think that's every colour for me to dislike now... I have some new bitz for da Deffwing - so some choppin' an' stikkin' seems an appropriate goal for next week (plus I found more 2mm plasticard strip ) Maybe I'll look at Morgrim again too...
Definitely sticking with it! I think I've finally got the paint thinness correct - I can tell because a) it's not creating distinct lines and b) I feel the need to go over it again with another coat (or two!). Thing is, the multiple layers take time and patience - both of which I start running out of - but I need the practice if I want to improve my painting and my speed. And what better place to practice, over and over again, than on boyz? It's frustrating because I just want to be *done*. But I know I'll kick myself repetitively later if I take too many shortcuts now...
It's all in preparation for doing an awesome job on Morgrim/Da Deffwing - at least that's what I keep telling myself!
Thanks for the continued support guys. I really do appreciate it. Apologies for not chipping in as much in your threads...

I really think that with the storm boyz you are approaching GD levels. While not the hyper realistic that we see a lot of from there, it has a certain stylized look that is great.

@Asylum_Inmate: Glad you have enjoyed watching the (slow) progress I've said it before, but I'm glad I made two - or I'd be jealous too - or Gitsplitta may not have ever received his
@whalemusic360: It's kind of you to say so - but having seen mine and GD level ones up close, it's really nowhere near. On the upside - plenty of room for improvement! I think the crappy iPhone photos must be obscuring imperfections I can agree to them being the best I have completed or near completed so far - and reiterate my response to Asylum_Inmate above - I'm glad I made a second for me to keep!

Slow progress is always better than no progress, also better than progressing too quickly, nothing worse than rushing to the end and realising you have missed something out (like I did)
I think in this case it was worth the wait

Arakasi (and endtransmission) go to the 'Eavy Metal Masterclass 3rd July 2011 at Warhammer World
Our hosts from the 'Eavy Metal team were Mark and Dave.
Our undercoated Great Sword - ready for painting mastery - on top of his box of mates. The fella to the right is one of Da Dark Angelz Orks - looking for advice on his tattoos... They had stuck the Great Sword to a piece of wood with double sided tape. Before we started, the 'Eavy Metal guys seemed unsure of this and offered blu-tack and spare paint pots to stick him on instead. I should have taken them up on this - the wood block was a bit large and would get in the way - especially doing the legs...
Our supplied brushes. Wait! These aren't GW brushes! (or are they?) Side note - apparently Forgeworld were told that, as soon as they released an airbrush, they could do airbrush masterclasses. Apparently the same limitations don't pertain to 'Eavy Metal... On the upside - we got to keep these too!
Our paint station in all of its glory. No green . Ended up feeling quite crowded...
And we are off! First up, white. Starting with a base coat of Astronomican Grey. Reinforcing the usual instructions - water down, apply multiple thin coats (waiting for each to dry in between) - the first coat *won't* cover the black undercoat. Also - with each coat, vary the direction for better coverage (ie left to right for the first coat, top to bottom for the next and so on)
I think I took this to remind me of the colours before I started jotting down notes
Next step, mix Shadow Grey 1:2 with Astronomican Grey (watered down) and shade towards where the shadows should be - the idea being that the bulk of the paint will remain where you lift off. If you are having trouble seeing it in the photo - well - it's a crappy iPhone pic - but I was having similar issues in real life too... It's all about slowly building up (or down) the colour... Suggestion was that you could be a bit sloppy here and retouch with the base coat colour as need be.
I think I may have missed some photo steps here We mixed White 2:1 with Astronomican Grey to highlight, this time drawing the brush towards the light edges. Again, several thin coats - not one thick one! Pure White was then used for edge highlights (very fine!). A darker shade ('Eavy Metal used Black, I used Shadow Grey) was painted into the creases - 'Eavy Metal is all about contrast - the very dark in the creases meeting the sharp white line highlights on the edges...
We broke for lunch, having not made it onto red - the quip from the Forgeworld Tank Masterclass resounding in my mind
After lunch and straight into skin. Base coat here is 1:1 Tallarn Flesh and Dwarf Flesh, again done in multiple thin coats (sensing a pattern?).
A wash of 1:1:1 Dark Flesh, Devlan Mud and water was applied into the cracks and crevices, again towards the darker areas, and then the base touched up if necessary. (Devlan Mud was mixed in to assist the flow)
Dwarf Flesh highlight - at least 50% water - towards the raised areas.
Followed by 1:1 Dwarf Flesh and Bleached Bone...
Finally, Bleached Bone applied to the very highest areas. You are supposed to be able to see all of the layers you have applied. There is also supposed to be a *lot* more contrast. I'll show the 'Eavy Metal models at the end - which look a lot better (mine tended to look washed out. I did three attempts, without much further success - though rushing certainly doesn't help!)
Leviathan Purple was washed into the eyes, around the nose and into deep crevices - creating greater contrast in the centre of the face and therefore drawing the attention there. A final (final?) highlight of 1:1 Bleached Bone and White was the finishing touch.
I must have been discouraged, or simply concentrating on redoing the skin an additional two times unsuccessfully, as I have no more pictures of my model from the day. Interestingly, all of the 'Eavy Metal team have different methods of painting and achieving different effects. The two present didn't seem to understand why you would do eyes as two white dots over black - when its easier to do a single black dot over white for example. One of the guys was using a home made wet palette.
We went on to do the sword metal - starting with a Boltgun Metal base. Doing a quick and simple technique, Devlan Mud and then Badab Black was washed on, controlling the wash to pool at the top and bottom of the sword. Mithril Silver was then used as an edge highlight. The edges of the blade are simple to do, but the line down the centre requires a delicate hand and much practice! Chipping was applied as fine lines to the top and centre - where the sword would get the most use. Rust could be added with thinned down Bestial Brown and then Vomit Brown - tapping around and into recesses, building up in layers.
Moving on, we did the shields at the top of the legs in gold, starting with a 1:1 Scorched Brown and Shining Gold base. (Shining Gold has very poor coverage by itself). In fact, 'Eavy Metal often mix Foundation paints with others in the range for base coats - getting the coverage from the Foundation paint and the colour/brightness from the mixed in paint - for example Blood Red mixed with Mechrite Red - due to the Foundation paints generally being on the dull side We continued building up layers of Shining Gold towards the highlight before moving on to Burnished Gold. Thinned Scorched Brown was applied into the darker areas, from the centre out. 2:1 Mithril Silver/Burnished Gold was blended into a fine line down the middle. 1:1 Scorched Brown/Black was used to shade down more. Mithril Silver was applied as a final edge highlight. I hadn't been able to see exactly where they were applying the shading, so my shield didn't turn out great. Theirs was flawless (as you would expect...) From here, you could also apply various washes for various effects - Red for a warm gold, purple for a cool gold etc. They would re-highlight the points after any washes.
As the day was coming to a close, red was quickly touched upon. 1:1 Blood Red/Mechrite Red as a base, shade with Scab Red/Black, Blood Red highlight, mix in Blazing Orange and then Vermin Brown to highlight. Baal Red glaze followed by re-picking the highlights.
And the leather - Scorched Brown base, wash Black, add Bleached Bone to highlight.
We had a great day. I think patience is probably the biggest lesson I learnt. It was helpful to have the guys on hand to look at your work and make suggestions. We did end up getting through more than just the legs - but we could have covered so much more. It was sort of limited by the sheer number of layers and waiting for layers to dry really. Oh - and I did get some ideas for my Ork Tattoos - which have already been applied!
And that's all I have! Well - except the actual 'Eavy Metal pics!
'Eavy Metal white (sorry - poor pic!)
'Eavy Metal skin
'Eavy Metal perfect gold!

Good write-up of the day
Their other suggestion for the sword was to do some thinned washes of blue or purple to the sword before the edge highlighting if you are doing a power weapon.
It's also important to note that this method of painting metals is what they use when painting regiments of troops, not character models. They would use a MNMM approach to those.

Although my Chaos Black arrived today, some bitz beat it - so back to some modelling, Deffwing style!
Meganob WIP - Codename: Predator
Nid - as suggested by... someone...
Meganob WIP - Codename: Warmachine
Two lots of "small bullets" from Zinge Industries Large Ammo Belts Decided to do away with the back mounted polearm in favour of a grot and ammo pack. The saw shoulderpads are trying to masquerade as the Power Klaw "counts as" - oh well...
Still lots of detailing and stuff to do. Yes - I know the right barrel needs drilling!

Decided to break in the new Chaos Black with some more shading - 3:1:1:1 Dark Angels Green, Chaos Black, Gloss Varnish and Water (may need to double the Gloss Varnish and Water next time...) Only got through three boyz before I was knackered - though that would be partially the previous late night/morning working on Warmachine catching up with me...
Tonight - attempt to finish the Stormboyz!

Love how the Nobz are coming off - I particularly like the 'Warmachine' nob, as I can really picture him walking down a battlefield, guns blazing!
The 'Predator' one looks good too, however I now may need to model one of my Nids with an Ork head just to put us on an even footing
18980
Post by: Arakasi
I'm liking "Warmachine" too - but it could just be because he is furthest along I had picked out ejecting shells for the guns and piles'o'shells for the ground - but realised later - as you mentioned - he will be *walking* down the battlefield (well, at least once is has (forcibly) disembarked his ride...) - so no piles'o'shells for him! I'll have to make my own and have them litter back in two lines
Some wonderful contributor (probably monkeytroll, but I'm too lazy to check back at the moment) suggested the Space Hulk Powerfist holding Nid spine - had nothing to do with your Nidz - we haven't even faced off yet! Still - that *does* give me an idea for a Nid corpse colour scheme...
Hmmm... just realised I have left the Meganobz metal gobz removable for easier painting. But "Predator" will need "hair extensions" eventually - not sure I'm going to manage to do that and keep the gob removable...
Right - no pic update, but an update nonetheless... Tidied up the Stormboyz Nobz base rims. Painted the missed Powerklaw cables. Added some final Mithril Silver highlights. I'm calling them DONE! Well - painting wise anyway. Still need to glue together (they still come apart in three pieces currently - still haven't decided if this is the best idea for Gitsplitta's...), add flock to mine (Gitsplitta wants to flock his own - I'm going to be concentrating around the feet - as the "rocks" don't come all the way up due to the previously mentioned separation ability...) and Matt Varnish Spray. (Or should that be Matt Varnish Spray and *then* flock? Not sure if the spray will have the same dampening effect my brush on varnish had on the flock...). All of that will happen next week - so with any luck, your Stormboyz Nob, my first GMS trade, my first complete model this year and in over a year, might be winging its way to you as early as next weekend Gitsplitta!

Everything is looking so awesome. The two MANZ are coming out great. The nid spine really sends the Predator theme home! I like the addition of the Grot backpack on Warmachine, the attached ammo belts are great too. I like how the hands ended up, too. The saw blade pads are a good choice.

@The Good Green: Thanks. I wasn't sure about the hands (still not 100%) - but I'm glad you like them!
@Artsoldier35: Thanks. We will get to finishing yours (did a little more on the Twin Trukk last night...)
Stuck the Stormboyz Nobz together. Gloss varnished for extra protection. Applied flock to mine. Just waiting on the Purity Seal and appropriate weather now
Did some more dark green shading on da boyz - only two more to go...
Did some more work on the Twin Trukk grill. That 2mm plasticard strip I found is more like 1.8mm, but that's okay - it's Orks!
Apologies - no pics - didn't feel there was enough progress to justify.
Model on!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Stormboyz Nob (mine) finished!
While I was out wrestling the Purity Seal (more on that in a second), thought I should finally do the last of the Nobz endtransmission painted for me...
Where's Gitsplitta's Stormboyz Nob for the GMS trade? Well... he had some "issues"...
Though its probably not obvious from the photo...
So, I've had this can of Purity Seal for quite a while, never been used. I shook it up real good. Tested on my Forgeworld Masterclass Tank - all seemed good. Did the vanilla Nob above first, then mine, then Gitsplitta's - and then noticed... frosting! Aaaaargh!
Got them inside and put the hairdryer to work. My two Nobz seem to have made it through acceptably at least, but there was more frosting on Gitsplitta's than I cared for.... Grrrrr.... So back out came the Gloss Varnish. You can probably see the difference better in the following pictures:
The frosting is worst on the banners (especially the red one), the Rokkit Pack jets and the Slugga. First picture is "as was". Second the red banner and part of the Rokkit Pack are Gloss Varnished. Third I've put the Gloss Varnish just down the middle of the Slugga.
So I did the whole lot in Gloss Varnish again (extra protection!) and will try again tomorrow...
Oh and Gitsplitta? Those banner poles are pretty delicate. Managed to break the yellow one for you in a hairdryer/dropping incident. Glued back on now of course, but I would try to avoid dropping the miniature (or anything else) on them...

Wow, had some catching up to do.
Thanks for the write-up on the masterclass, sounds good, and bonus, 3 series 7's, very nice
The MANZ looking excellent, very nice ammo feeds, I forsee some of those in my future Good to see you swinging to the side of cyberising with the addition of the single-eyed ammo grot
Don't think I was the one to mention the fist with nid, as I'm not overly familiar with the termie sprues, I was thinking it was Major Tom or Sageheart for some reason. It was a good idea whoever, looks good. Good to see you swinging to the side of cyberising with the addition of the single-eyed ammo grot
Finished stormnob looks the bomb, sorry to hear of purity seal frostiness though, that always sucks, and never happens to a scrappy test-piece, always the showcase piece for someone else. Hopefully the gloss will resolve most if not all of the issue.

Post by: Arakasi
@monkeytroll: Thanks. That's not an eye... Purity seal frostiness is mostly resolved (a bit of the red banner is less than perfect ) - now waiting for appropriate weather to try again...
@Gitsplitta: I just hope it survives transportation... (still, it's all plastic (except the actual banners, oh and the helmet wings, and the pinning... okay - so it's not *all* plastic...), so plastic glue is your friend...) And what Santobell said
@Santobell: Yeah yeah. Trukks and Boyz. Painting enthusiasm is waning, so probably more modelling next week... (working on a different hood ornament for the Twin Trukk - but didn't get far enough along to be worth photographing...)
@Anung Un Rama: Thanks!
Until next week... (well, for any actual progress anyways...)
Oh. At some point past there was a suggestion to put a tarpaulin covered 'Nid in the back of the GMS Trukks - any ideas on what particular bug would be most suited? I'm thinking Hormagaunt, but Dakka advice is always welcome! (Before I buy some....)
35053
Post by: slice'n'dice
Depends on what sort of effect your after. If you're looking for lots of tendrils poking out from under the tarpaulin (as per Independence Day), then I would go for a venomthrope (though you may want to wait for the finecast version so you can manipulate a resin mini rather than metal...).
Hormagaunt is a good stock Nid, but the legs are built in such a way that it may be hard to manipulate to how you want it, depending on how much of the model you want to expose...
Genestealers are easily manipulated into different poses, and the new resin lictor is a very sweet model that could also be manipulated easily (and be large enough that you'de expect limbs to be hanging out here and there...)
18980
Post by: Arakasi
Hmmm... maybe Genestealers then, though the Venomthrope *is* appealing, just not at £12.30 x2 (and not released in Finecast yet, and will only get more expensive, and not convinced Finecast issues are over yet...) Will ponder some more...
In the meantime - did some more work on the Twin Trukk hood detailing. What does every Trukk need? A hood ornaork of course!
17244
Post by: The Good Green
What about a trygon... that's the one that burrows under ground, right? Came up right in front of the trukk, only a second too late- *thump thump* and it's roadkill. Also it can be a high priced unit to field so it's good for bragging rights Also, I think the hood ornament is an interesting choice... I like it but I am very curious how you plan to paint it(?) I really like the wings. Also the Nob looks great. Those two are so amazing.

Post by: Matt.Kingsley
that oraork is great!
What model is it?
18980
Post by: Arakasi
@The Good Green: Trygon (or Mawloc) may be a *bit* big. Awesome idea, but I think it will overshadow the model - assuming it even *fits* in the back... Inital thoughts are to paint the ornaork silver...
@Matt.Kingsley: It is a fantasy snotling with Ravenwing emblems for wings (swords trimmed off)

Or now that I think about it, how about a Ravener? Same idea as the trygon, but way smaller.
Did you get the frosting issue one control? If you need any pointers, Major Tom went through similar with him SM Termis, and I think made a tutorial for it.

A ravener sounds good to me, just so long as you can get a Kevin Bacork and Fred W-ork to go with it

Post by: Arakasi
@Eckeon: I'm sure Artsoldier35 would love that, but this project is involved enough as it is. Will keep in mind for later (perhaps when my brother's Nidz become my regular opponent )
@Asylum_Inmate: Not sure we'll be seeing "go fasta" racing stripes - we'll see - painting is still a while off... I got bored with painting green (shock! I know!) so some of the modelling is seeing some rotation - and I really need to move Artsoldier35's GMS Trukk along. Of course, the Meganobz and Morgrim keep eyeing me off accusingly. I think I'm starting to suffer from monkeytrollitis... Stormboyz Nobz are complete - the only thing you are likely to see now on them is when Gitsplitta receives his, adds his Bad Moon decals and static grass, and takes his awesome photo of it. Otherwise, mine will be sitting around waiting for a Stormboyz mob to go with... (or perhaps filling in as a Power Klaw Nob, similar to Gitsplitta's in recent (and not so recent) battle reports - which reminds me, still have 3 battle reports to write up! Doh!)
@whalemusic360: I may have to do my usual thing and just buy one of each and see what works best! (and then start littering more Nidz around on bases and such...) Frosting is pretty much under control - the coat of gloss cleared up most of it - just waiting on better weather to attempt again. Actually, at this point, I may as well just wait until I've moved everything back up to Scotland weekend after next - that way I can spray and blow dry in quick succession. Fully aware of Major Tom's catastrophe and recovery. I should find it and put a link in for others....
@monkeytroll: The aristorkracy! Classic. I don't remember those Orks in Independork Daze
For those following/assisting with the Nid issue - are the Warriors plastic or metal? (Not that they appear a better choice than Raveners, Genestealers or Venomthropes...) I need to watch *that* scene again to make a final decision methinks...
Oh yes, and progress...
Rivets a la Forgeworld Modelling Masterclass:
I finally got around to opening up the water filter I've been carrying around for almost two years and using the contents for rivets. I hope you find it as riveting as I did Now I have to wonder if I need to add more rivets to Artsoldier35's... (Oh, and I haven't suddenly completed a lot more - that's the Twin Trukk fitted with the cab from Artsoldier35's GMS Trukk )

Oh, that's coming along very nicely Arakasi! Those rivets are expertly done... you'll need to get your membership to the United Iron Workers local 439 or Bruno and Clamps will be over to break a few fingers!

As far as Nids go, both the warrior and ravener are plastic... Raveners are a bit more expensive though...

Well, when I started thinking of raveners my mind drifted towards Tremorks
Nice rivets, keep forgetting to pick up a used filter from my mates.

@Gitsplitta: Depends - are they American based or British?
@Artsoldier35: Should have guessed
@slice'n'dice: Either way, I'm glad not to be paying Aus prices
@monkytroll: Since starting your awesome blog of course!
@Gitsplitta, moonshine, Artsoldier35, 40k Ninja, slice'n'dice, monkeytroll: Thanks!
Motivation low, I decided to revisit Morgrim. After a bit of cleaning up it became apparent what would be needed next...
Green Stuff!
Filled in some "holes" from the repositioning and smoothed out the hammer. All just to have a base for doing the more interesting stuff - later....
Of course, I mixed up too much Green Stuff, so the Trukks got some exhaust pipe bands. Those rivets work a treat here too!
Twin Trukk
Even Artsoldier35's GMS Trukk got in on the action (there was that much extra Green Stuff...)
And the other side...
Catchya!

@schank23: More progress below!
What's this? An update on Sunday? How is this possible?
Added in Morgrim's shoulder pads. Because they cover his upper arm workings, the bar connecting them is because I am making the whole shoulder pads/cape/lion skin removable for painting. Well, that's da plan...
And with the cape stuck in place. A *lot* of greenstuff work still to do here, but I'll need to get the twin-linked/big shoota in place first...

Post by: Arakasi
Wow! So many comments in one night! Either I need to make more Sunday night updates, over everyone just loves to see Morgrim!
@Everyone: Thanks for taking the time to comment!
@Gitsplitta: I have a plan for the hammer head - but if it doesn't work out I will definitely take that under advisement.
@moonshine: It's the reason I've added shoulder pads to all of my Meganobz too
@Anvildude: Other than taking the targeter off, I haven't made any more updates to the shield yet - patience - it will get there (there is also more work to be done on the hammer, and, well, everything...)
I've come to realise that I no longer have room to shoulder mount the twin linked/big shoota - the aesthetic balance is great at the moment ( IMHO) - and wherever I try to mount the cannon puts it out of whack. Initial tests suggest placing it back on the hammer fist - wrist mounted. At least removing the original from there wasn't a complete waste - it was too tall - and this way Morgrim will be even more original and less Ghaz....

You could have a grot carry it have one with a winged Iron Gob and another with the Big Shootas.
Give them robes and a hood but have their ears sticking through and make them textured like they are made from Hessian bags (Potato sacks).

Morgrim is looking suitably bad-ass there
You know, with that bar added to the top there's room for all sorts of magnetising shenanigans now Can't think of anything needed atm, but just thought I'd throw that out there. Always fun to see pointless magnetised options It stops me feeling lonely when I contemplate doing them myself

If they are textured like a sack, they have to have branding on them. da red ones grow fasta!

Post by: Arakasi
@Santobell, Eckeon, endtransmission: Yeah, the Grot Wotchas has been on the cards for a long time - probably mentioned at least twice in this rambling blog! As you will see, I have decided to go with the attached Shoota rather than a Grot though.... But carrying a helmet, Azrael style, is defintitely going to happen! (eventually...) Will have to ponder the branding idea...
@Imperial Monkey: I can reach 1500, just not painted In two weeks I should be able to do whenever too (new job next week involves plenty of work from home ) (Still have 3 Battle Reports to write up...)
@monkeytroll: Sadly, no magnetising shenanigans planned for Morgrim (just the above mentioned Grot Wotchas!) - I guess I'll just have to go back to the Trukks for you
More Morgrim progress - attached twin-linked/big shoota and finally filled in his missing hand!

ach, doesn't matter if its not painted. They don't care too much anymore (i think its had a management change). That would be cool. I have to go back to school in the week beginning 22nd Aug, so it would have to be some time before then...
18980
Post by: Arakasi
@slice'n'dice: I'll worry about the painting when I get there. Don't think it will be a problem though - remember - all his armour is bone white...
@The Good Green: Thanks!
@Imperial Monkey: I think we can organise something. Could even go to the Veterans night (what night is that again?) now. I should be available from Thursday next week onwards (though I have plans the weekend after that) - which leaves one weekend and many week nights before 22nd Aug
Right. Was quite tired last night, so no progress (unless you count sleep). Meaning, more awake tonight - so, progress! Yay!
In my attempts to become more proficient/less scared of green stuff - I filled in most of the gaps on the lion cloak...
Then added the Stikkbomb Chukka:
Then decided it might look better underneath:
Preference Dakkanauts?
And what does every gun need? Ammo!
Still a long way to go... Got to finish the gun arm - I think a cable or two is in its future, as well as fingers and/or rivets on the gauntlet. Finish the hammer. Finish the shield. Hmmm... maybe that is all?
Catchya!
18424
Post by: Imperial Monkey
I think the ammo needs to go somewhere...maybe an ammo runt carrying a box? At present he'd use that up very quickly...
18980
Post by: Arakasi
The problem with needing it to go somewhere is that it needs somewhere to go! I did try curving it up behind him - but I didn't really want to add an ammo box or bag on his back either. In then end, I figure he doesn't actually *use* the twin-linked shoota/big shoota much, if at all, anyway - so the limited feed is not an issue (and it's not like any of the other Ork guns have larger ammo boxes/clips/belts - well except my War Machine )
He will eventually get an ammo runt as well as part of the larger display base
(Actually, the short length is also so that it doesn't interfere with the display base. You could also consider it mid battle - after he has expended some ammo...)
Of course, if the consensus is he needs more...

Post by: NakedBatBoy
It's a fine amount of ammo... no more needed!
41516
Post by: Eckeon
i think its good and the other looks better underneath.

Post by: prototype_X
if you put some shells on the base to show the mid-battle idea it should be fine.
18509
Post by: endtransmission
How about a few links worth of used shells coming out of the gun elsewhere to show that he's been using the weapon?
30344
Post by: monkeytroll
The problem with putting the stikkbomb chukka underneath is it kind of gets lost down there, the problem with putting it on top is that it might get a bit busy up there
Hope that helps
Ammo looks fine as is, if he was loaded with all the ammo he'd really use there'd be nothing to see of him, just a big pile of ammo with a gun sticking out. That's what runts are for
18980
Post by: Arakasi
Thanks for the comments people! Looks like the ammo should be just fine You'll have to remind me to put some empty shells on the base if I forget (hint - *before* I undercoat - don't worry - you'll get plenty of warning...)
Here I am, procrastinating, wondering what to make some progress on. Look! A new comment on my blog! It's monkeytroll! Surely I can gain some inspiration from his imparted wisdom...
...nope - that doesn't help at all! Neatly sums up the issue though I guess.... I've been leaving it on top for now to see if it grows on me...

Trukks
I think I actually prefer the look of the chukka underneath(obviously there's a very orky way of them chukkin' from there. Maybe he bounces them at the enemy - or wherever) but I'm worried it'll get lost down there, almost out of view.
Maybe a grenade launcher style, with one barrel above, one below, 2 plasticard tubes, 2 stikkbombs and a bit of detailing, maybe WFB flintlocks (just the actual locks)as the firing device?
18980
Post by: Arakasi
Well, I should probably be working on the Trukks - but bigfish did get in first, so a little more progress on the Meganobz:
Meganob WIP - Codename: Lightning
Why can't I model miniatures that will fit standard miniature case slots?
Codename: Lightning got his second Klaw and his gauntlets are now enclosed - just need some GS to fill gaps and smooth things out... I went with him to try to keep all the Meganobz at the same level (Warmachine and Predator are still further along...) - now I just need to get Thunder up to par... (Otherwise I'll end up with the Trukk situation all over again...)
All good ideas monkeytroll. I'm inclined to try the simpler route to begin with and simply shorten the Stikkbombz... then again, "hiding" them underneath does make them a bit of an Easter Egg to find - oh look - and he has Stikkbomb Chukkas too! (And it's not as if the model requires more to grab your attention does it?)
Wow... Page 59... I better get that page 60 mini update ready...
No work tonight - packing for my long trip up to Edinburgh tomorrow - and all da Boyz need ta be pakked gud an' propa like. Goodbye Coventry and uninterrupted, yet short, nights of modelling and occasional painting. Hello more games (hopefully!) and potentially longer weekend modelling opportunities... May write up those battle reports that I've been meaning to - or at least start...
See you on the other side!
Updated for spelling - doh!

On the stickbomb chucka for Morgrim, I'd say under-slung (I know I'm a bit late). For your carrying case needs, doesnt Battlefoam have a UK location now? Custom cut man, I love it.
18980
Post by: Arakasi
Not too late yet!
Yeah - I have my eye on a Pack Air. I already have a Pack 432 with the standard Ork layout. The issue with Custom Cut is waiting until everything is finished and the dimensions are finalised! I already have a GW case with the foam shredded due to changing requirements... (Will eventually get Custom Cut to replace that too...)
Apparently packing up took longer than I thought...

Post by: Arakasi
@moonshine: Agreed - just not sure how I would have got a more dynamic/strike with one arm pose - the mega armour bodies don't allow for much (I just feel lucky I managed it with the Warboss). Instead you get the slow and purposeful advance, lightning klaws outstretched, stay there I'm coming to disembowel you look...
@ 40k Ninja: Surely that is not even possible?

What about if you pose him to look like he is lunging forward and stabbing somebody, one arm stretched formward and the other recoiled back. Or you could go with a pose that like Morgrims. Or if you want a challenge you could pose him to look like he is killing a dark angel and is showing of the kill (an arm in the air with an impaled dark angel on it and the other held back)
Oh and for your Gretchin, you could use Malifauxs "Som'er Teeth jones" if you replaced the head and bottle in his hand.

Soooo long since my last post... I prefer to lead my posts with more progress, but it is not yet to be. I've changed jobs, so Da Dark Angelz have made their way up to Edinburgh - no more Coventry for me! And then we got a new pet squig, er, dog, as Da Boss' passed away recently. (Plans for the new puppy were actually in progress previously... so at least that part worked out well...) I've been around DakkaDakka, but it's about time I responded to my own thread!

I prefer the stick bomb chucker on the bottom but I think if you do that you will still need something on top.
The Terminator armour has been fused into a shield - it is supposed to be more stylistic than an *actual* terminator (well, it *was* and actual terminator at some point...), but I still have more detailing to do to bring it together - spikes, chains, barbed wire, rivets etc are all in the toolbox abiding their time (I may not use all of them in the end though...) I'm still making a decision on the Stikkbomb Chukka position. I think I prefer underneath too, but he just spent a game with it on top (no blu- tac needed!) and it's growing on me...
troy_tempest wrote:Hey Arakasi glad you will be spending more time up north and hopefully we can play soon!

Imperial Monkey wrote:Great game. At the current rate I should win the next one Although I was glad to find that list was successful (I wouldn't have called it very competitive but I may be wrong)...
It was a great game - 5 turns, close, and could have swung either way with equal amounts of good luck, bad luck and average luck to keep it interesting. I'll be talking to the Big Mek about the Mega-armour - the Meganobz did very well but were let down by their equipment (they must have rolled like over a dozen 1s for armour saves and to wound rolls!) Next game should be even better!
Apparently the GW Edinburgh staff were awed by some of my conversions - Morgrim, Meganob Codename: War Machine and Artsoldier35's Trukk in particular...

Well played sir, well played
The new pictures are better - I think it was just because I did a quick scan of the model before, but now I come to look at it more closely it is much better. I love the idea of him standing on the top of a hill with the moon behind just so the enemy can see him in the half light and fear him.

Not my Waaagh! Banner - but I could in a pinch - he just isn't one of da Dark Angelz...
As for paint - everything is on hold while I try to get him fully painted for the 17th. Skin is done, grey is in progress (I should post another pic...) - he is doubling as an experiment in how long it takes me to go from zero to one hundred percent on a single mini. If I'm successful, I may just then concentrate on finishing my Big Mek!
Sadly, all this painting (and life) is once again getting in the way of modelling - Trukks, Meganobz, Morgrim...

@bigfish: It is definitely a long endeavour - we played that game, beginning of July? (Though I've only been writing it up this last week...) And there are two more to come, and then Imperial Monkey's... I made a commitment (to myself) way back at the beginning that I would write all my battle reports up so I could better see my progress over time.
