Ok Arakasi.... i hate you xD
That is such an epic trukk, and I envy your Mek Skillz!

I have to say, Im impressed beyond words, and im absolutely stunned that youre putting this much effort into a model youre sendding to someone else!
Im gonna have to try and loot some of your ideas, as per true ork fashion
I just wish I hadnt already built my 2 trukks!!

I definitely cant wait to do a swap with you! I only hope I can come up with something even half as awesome as this!

@monkeytroll:Thanks as always. Always happy to inspire...

@Artsoldier35: The sad thing is, yours will probably be completely finished before any of mine - except maybe its (currently non-existent) twin... I await the day I finish my painting so that I too can have crowds around my table to check out the awesome WAAAGH!

@Ramos Asura: Why the hate? Well - it works both ways (I'm sure you've seen what I'm getting in return!) and there is a reason I'll be making myself one too. It's funny - I wanted my first trade to be a bit special, to show what level I was happy to take this too - so was happy when Gitsplitta obliged. Of course, Artsoldier35 took this to a whole other level - our initial discussions started as lowly as a Big Shoota Boy, through Lootas, until I saw what he wanted to trade - at which point it started to go into multiples - until we finally settled on the current trade - much to his amazement (apparently) and mine I guess I'm up for a challenge, and Artsoldlier35 challenged me. I already have three Trukks. Making a unique fourth - well - just coming up with the idea was hard! Then it's just pride and improving my skills. The only issue is it takes me forever! At the end of the day - I'm interested in a fair trade of size and effort, whether its a Boy, Marine, Vehicle or Other. I look forward to our swap, as I do all of the swaps I have lined up - and not just because it means I'll have finished one! Bonus if its on my planned modelling list (many pages back now). Though I think I might lose it if someone suggests a Battlewagon!

Why limit yourself to only two Trukks anyway

Good Grief, that trukk is awesome! How did you manage that air intake? It looks like one piece.

The painting is coming out very nice... great even, as well.

Post by: Arakasi

@Miss Dee: I'm tired from last night's marathon effort (no painting or modelling tonight, and an early night too) - my brain is not quite grasping your suggestion - care to elaborate?

@monkeytroll: I tell you what - I'll do you an *invisible* Gargant. Special Mek job - it exists just outside of reality so it can't be detected or bumped into. Doesn't weigh anything either. I'll even do you THREE Seriously though, I'd love to do a trade with you - I haven't asked because I'd have to put you - I think it's ninth now - in my queue. Then again, my dilemma is that if I don't, ninth might be the least of your issues

@The Good Green: Thanks! The old one or the new one? The old one is three pieces of plasticard tube glued together with a strip of 0.5mm plasticard sheet around the outside. I then glued another piece of 0.5mm plasticard sheet across the front. Scissors and then a hobby knife to trim it back to the shape of the intake. Pushed the tip of the hobby knife through the front of each tube and trimmed it back to the plasticard tube. Looks pretty good huh? Unfortunately I decided it was too large - either smaller tubes or only two tubes was needed - and when I compared that to the original intake - well it was just going to be easier to use that The new intake - cut from the top of the Trukk engine - just sits on top of the Deffkopta engine. Two small pieces of 1mm plasticard prop it up at the back. (The Deffkopta engine sits on two pieces of 1mm plasticard on top of the Trukk engine - where the intake *was*. The plasticard here was needed due to the interaction of the Deffkopta engine with the existing top shock absorber mounts...)

mmmmm..... battlewagon

Yeah ive seen both halves of the trade, and its already on a level transcending all my expectations! Stellar work on all sides.

As to the trukks....
I was sayin I wish I hadnt already built my kits xD now I gotta get new ones!
I have a pair of 3rd edition rhinos that Im hacking apart- ones a chaos one, while the other is an imperial that I spit into two separate trukks. one half of it's still pretty open tho.... hmmm.... I think I might throw in a bit of ideas from Big Mek Arakasi

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/10/14 23:09:57

Post by: Artsoldier35

I'm sure I could have thrown in something else to sweeten the pot....but that's neither here nor there. I am extremely happy with the trade as it is set up right now. I needed a very unique Trukk for my internet squad of Orks embassador's I'm collecting. This will be their ride.

I won't even mention the whole Gargant thing....

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/10/14 23:27:24

Post by: monkeytroll

Oh man, invisible gargants, yes please! I can do you four squadrons of cloaked fighta-bommas in exchange

Don't worry about the trade thing, I hadn't approached you as I knew you were snowed under at the moment, but consider yourself pencilled in for sometime in the future

Figured your original intake was something like that, but thanks for the detailed explanation, I was liking it, but the new version seems to fit a bit better.

@Ramos Asura: Looking forward to seeing your progress. I've had to put my looted wagon plans on hold...

@Artsoldier35: Just emphasizing - for others rather than yourself - what it would take

@monkeytroll: Cool. I'll officially put you down for number nine then The old intake had a lot more work still to be done. I think if I ever do another Trukk (or maybe a buggy) I might try again...

@Gitsplitta: Simply awesome - and I think you managed to differentiate the greens better now too. Now I just need to finish painting yours... I knew I'd regret not doing any painting last night - I just didn't think it would be so soon!

@HadoukenAvenger: Thanks!

Post by: Gitsplitta

Thanks gents!

The gentle highlighting of the skin worked out just right. Now I'll go back to my Big Mek and use the technique on him in hopes of improving his look as well. It didn't take much.

For the battle damage, I used grey_death's method (there are links to it in his Son's of Medusa blog). I didn't have the right size foam to do it that way (mine was too fine) but I just used and old brush & it worked out fine. Ironically it looks like the stuff I use for the bushes on the base is just about the right consistency to work as a paint applicator for the damage, so I'll have to try that out some time later on.

I used weathering powers on him which I don't usually do, but he was just too clean looking without it. That's where the rusty spots on the "wings" (and other places) & the muting of colors on his boots and the marine armor pieces come from as well as smudging on the motor exhaust & manifold. The only thing I simply could not figure out how to do was hide the little pin in his left heel (keeps him solidly upright). I must have mutilated 10 different model railroad trees last night which had always been my plan to use to hide the pin, but none of them looked any good in the spot. At least the placement of the pin is subtle and it's the same color as the rock, so it's not very noticeable. I think I may have a couple of more varieties of trees in a box in the basement... if I find those I may take one more crack at hiding the pin.

The wings are removable for ease of transportation and storage... but it's a pretty solid model even given how "rangy" it is. I don't think (hope) you'll have any problems with it falling apart on you.

OH, one more neat little thing that was new. With my Big Mek I started adding a little white dot to my ork eyes... not so much a reflection as you would with marine lenses... but more of a "glint of evil". On the bug boy I have a perfect tiny little white dot... how I got it was to take a toothpick, dip it in white paint and very gently touch the figure with it. Worked perfectly!

There's plenty of room on the banner pole for you to add a Dark Angelz symbol if you'd like. I feel kind of guilty that there's actually no Bad Moon insignia on him (he IS a Bad Moon after all), however there is plenty of classical Bad Moon ornamentation on his wings and weapons so that'll have to do. Last thing I'd like to point out (cause it's small) is that his "purity seal" is actually a little ork glyph!

Arakasi, your work has been very inspiring to me... I never would have tried to do this extensive a conversion on an ork without seeing what you were doing with your Dark Angelz. I'm delighted to be able to do something neat for you in return. I hope he gives you many good years of service.

Gits

@Miss Dee: Apologies - I meant I didn't understand where you were going with the concept of a MacGyver Ork. An Ork that dislikes guns? The best I can come up with is a Mek of some description? Wielding a Swiss Army Knife? Just seemed on the surface a bit unclear how one would portray MacGyver as an Ork - hence - care to elaborate?

@Gitsplitta: I've been reading my recently acquired copy of Modelling Masterclass Volume I (where is Volume 2?) and been thinking of adding weathering powders to my rank and file models - I may start with y/our Stormboyz Nobz given the success you have obviously had... Cool that the wings are removable - though I still reckon I'm going to have fun transporting him! I don't think I'll be adding a Dark Angelz symbol - and I'll have to check out that Ork Glyph as purity seal closer - seems like an excellent idea I may have to "appropriate" Glad to inspire (though its been having some interesting side effects elsewhere...) and I'm sure he will account for himself well! *If* I get him before leaving for Oz for November, he may make an appearance in Oz in some battle reports against my brother (Assuming I can fit him in my case!)

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/10/15 14:58:53

Post by: Gitsplitta

Just noticed that you can't really see the purity seal very well in any of the photos... I'll take a close-up of it tonight just for fun.

The boss pole "spins" freely, so obviously one of my joints (it's 3 tubes within each other like a telescoping antenna) is loose. So you may be able to remove part of the boss pole which may also facilitate transport. It's a beast though to be sure. It's stable on a flat surface but on a gaming table with slopes and such it might be a little tippy. Sorry about that but I wanted to keep him on a standard base for you so he'd be codex-correct.

If you think that it will be a problem, I can put it on a larger base (or you can).

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/10/15 15:14:32

Post by: Arakasi

No problem - the current base is perfect. One of the things I've come to appreciate with my "inspirational and extensive conversions" is the "transportability" and "fielding fiddliness" - so he won't be out of place with any of my current models! Over time I hope to increase the "playability" and "transportability" of my conversions without sacrificing "versatility", "uniqueness" and "awesomeness"

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/10/15 15:28:12

Post by: Gitsplitta

I did add a flexible magnet sheet to the base... mainly for weight. A lot of folks out here line their trays with thin sheets of metal and put the magnetic sheeting on their bases so things can be transported with relative ease. I'm thinking of doing just that for my ork nobs, HQs & objective markers since none of them fit in the cells of my regular case very well & get banged up when I transport them. Just a thought.

Love the work so far - although I've only read the first 10 pages and a few of the last skimmed the rest. will try to read it all

The engine intakes are great might try some thing like them in one of my buggies i was originally gonna use a china connector to represent the engine but this looks much better but my koptas have already been reserved for other work

damn all those painted models I've seen are really driving me to do some painting

OK Arakasi, last time I take over your thread... I promise!

It's my opinion that a trade isn't really official if the figure doesn't run with my army at least once... so the boys and I started a game last night and the bug boy is leading a large mob of shootas in battle. Now he's a real Bad Moon and can properly represent the clan to Da Dark Angelz! Here's your proof...

Right - still alive - thanks for asking!

Progress has been minimal due to work being a bit crazy - just some painting to the Stormboyz Nobz and three of my Shoota Boyz.

@Gitsplitta: I currently have to transport by plane - but I'm sure the magnetic sheet idea will be useful once that is not the case - look forward to seeing the implementation. Purity seal looks great - as I said - I think I'll be stealing that idea in the future No issues on the thread takeover - I wasn't doing much recently anyway - but you didn't answer the most important question - how did he perform in the battle I had hoped to finish yours up before my 4 weeks in Oz, but it is looking unlikely. On the up side, I may be able to "field test" yours when I return - though grounded as part of a Boyz or Nobz mob...

@insaneume: Only 20+ pages to go! Steal away! What painted models

@Rose_Mountainz: Yeah - it can get confusing - you have to watch who the poster is. But I wouldn't have it any other way

I know the feeling!

I came up with the idea during some conversion stuff for my 40k Skaven. I'm using Stompa parts to build them a large um thing (sorry it's a secret atm I'll spill the beans once it's built), anyway long story short I said to my self Orks use Blimps I've seen the Forgeworld one for Epic and two of these would make a pretty convincing blimp like a chunky version of the C&C Kirov.

@HadoukenAvenger: Paranoid much?!? Still, I look forward to your new policy of UPDATES FOR EVERYONE ALL THE TIME. If my logic hasn't failed me, NOW is a subset of ALL THE TIME. I believe you have a long list of started and unstarted projects to share

@everyone: Slow week, due to work and stuff ups. Made some more progress on the Stormboyz Nobz (painting). Have filled the gap between the Trukk engine and the radiator (modeling), as well starting on the twin (engine) . Should have a pic up this evening... (gotta have a pic on the new page!)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Pics as promised:

Trukk Engine:

Think I need to add a ring around the cog... After that, exhausts and finishing up the steering mechanism before moving on to detailing the hood (unless I change my mind and start on the cab or tray...)

Bonus: Back of Stormboyz Nob

I wasn't going to put this up, but the pic seems to have turned out alright (on my phone anyway). The was going to be a frontal version too, but nevermind. DA Green is all highlighted up. The remaining white areas have been blocked out in Calthan Brown. Interestingly (for me) - I forgot he has an ammo belt on the front which I should have done first...

Just got through your blog, holy flipping cow your orks are amazing, I love the truks, big mek, stormboyz nob, the lot... wow.

I know it was covered a while back, but have you considered a couple of cheap sprung loaded pens (not really sure what they are called)... you could use the plastic from the pen and the spring which surrounds it for the shokkz.

Btw Pathead is a nice place, i drive through every month or so, not convinced the chippy is that nice, but the bakery is pretty good.

@dantay_xv: At this point, congratulations for making it through are probably in order! I'll investigate the pen idea. I will probably look for springs like whalemusic360 suggested whilst I'm in Oz (I know, I know - believe me, it will actually be more convenient for me to pick them up on the other side of the world!). The twin vehicle will give me a chance to experiment... My wife loves Pathhead. The chippy isn't (I refuse to eat from there anymore, though sometimes my wife succumbs...), but the bakery is awesome (an literally less than a minute's walk from our place )

@moonshine, @ceorron: Thanks again!

@HadoukenAvenger: I'll be in Perth for all of November. Da Boss has allowed me to bring Da Dark Angelz to face my brother's Nidz. If I can get it past her, I know their are a few Dakkites in Perth too...

Thanks!

Now the question of the colouring of the banners comes up again - as well as if I keep the chest skull plate on the left red or not...

At this point, I think I'm leaning towards dark green flags with red, perhaps white glyphs. Seriously considering redoing the chest skull white...

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/10/26 09:32:21

White In my humble opinion
and for banners alternate red and green so green banner with red detail and white glyphs
or Red banner with green/white detail and whatever you didn't use glyphs.

it looked good in photoshop

Coming along nicely! I believe the chest plate would look nice the same off-white colour as the helmet, adding some continuity when it comes to colouring. As for the banners: yellow would be very striking.

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/10/26 17:17:12

Post by: Gitsplitta

Hmmmmm yellow... you know at lest one of them is going to a Bad Moon army... so yellow would be entirely appropriate.

I'll throw my vote towards white skull, yellow banner with red detail.

Post by: Arakasi

@Artsoldier35: The light at the end of the tunnel is about to be switched off pending vacation in Australia... but yes, I feel my frustration changing from block colours and layers of highlights to details details details! Small update on your Trukk below...

@moonshine: Yes - bone or parchment coloured were another option.

@Gitsplitta: Thanks - doubly important that you think so! Will address colouring below...

@CommissarKhaine: Thanks - will address colouring below...

@monkeytroll: Colouring addressed in 3... 2... 1...

Chest skull - on closer inspection, I have left this red - for the moment. We'll see how it turns out, I may repaint it if necessary. The reason I chose red initially was because it sits over the top of the Nob's "white" shirt and green trousers. I was afraid using either of these colours would make it difficult to pick out. I think the red looks better in person than in the photo. it is also pretty much obscured by the stance of the model.
Perhaps with excessive weathering/scratches it will turn out perfect. Still - I'll be playing this one by ear...

Banners - yellow? But there is no yellow on Dark Angels!?! As moonshine mentioned, a bone (or parchment) colour may work. I think if I didn't want them to draw attention, the dark green would work - but that's hardly the role of banners, is it? So that leaves bone or red. I'd probably lean towards dark green glyphs on bone, maybe with some blocked in red - where as I would probably go white glyphs on red. I guess I should be drawing more inspiration from the Dark Angels banners. I think I am going to have to come up with some designs. Gitsplitta's idea of yellow for his Bad moon army sparked another idea - I don't have to do both banners the same! So possibly do one in bone with green glyphs and the other in red with white glyphs! For Gitsplitta's, I could replace the bone one with one in yellow with black glyphs - perhaps making sure to have both the Blood Axe and Bad Moon glyphs on the respective banners. Thoughts?

Also - while discussing glyphs and markings - do you have any other marking requirements Gitsplitta? I usually put a Bloood Axe tattoo on one shoulder and a mob marking and number on the other - so if you have any preferences, let me know. Otherwise I'll probably mark both Nobz the same way. (At this point, I haven't even checked spacing for these)

Painting - unfortunately, no pics (might take one before starting again this evening) - but basically the "white" areas on the second Stormboy have been blocked in with brown and all of the red on both (including the SM Bolt Pistol, but I forgot the SM Plasma Pistol) now has its second coat. I do like the look of solid Mechrite Red Starting to run out of areas showing undercoat - on the Orks anyway (bases still need work...)

Trukk - Again, no pics - not that there is much visible progress. Managed to add the rim to the cog on the front, which looks a lot better. Have started on the exhaust system. Due to the positioning of the suspension, and how I want the exhausts to run through the vehicle, these are having to be (slowly) custom built Hopefully I might finish the first bit around the engine before my vacation, so I can leave you with a suitable picture to satiate you for four weeks (right, who am I kidding?)

Over and out!

Thanks for that. I'm bringing my DA Codex so I have more time to work on inspiration... and hopefully Imperial Armour 8 - weight permitting

CommissarKhaine wrote:You've got a mould line on the bottom of your trukk

Where *exactly*? The one running the length of the engine is actually a join line. It feels flat. I guess I could always GS over it if *really* necessary (it is on the bottom...). Wait till you see the next pics (re red). Yeah - the cog looked a bit bare before, and the "upgrade" just makes it in my opinion.

Artsoldier35 wrote:Exhaust! Incredible! Man, you're totally going balistic on the details.

Well, Trukks have exhausts - but due to the other workings, I couldn't get the regular ones to fit. That and I like a challenge. And there is a reason they extend to the rear wheel guards - but you will have to wait a month to find out why We haven't even *begun* going ballistic on details yet!

monkeytroll wrote:Trukk progressing very nicely there lol, does this mean I should give up on the idea of any trukks, not sure they'lll stand up to this

Ummm... NO? You have your own unique perspective which I will never be able to emulate, let alone come up with in the first place! Anyway - you have the Wacky Races to do It's funny - I didn't think I had another Trukk in me, but working on this one, well lets just say other ideas are coming to mind...

Phew! Now that's all caught up with - onto the pics!

Gitsplitta's GMS Stormboyz Nob WIP - now with more red!

My Stormboyz Nob WIP - now with more red!

Artsoldier35's GMS Trukk WIP - hood detailing started...

I'm not sure if the pics do the red justice - but I just *love* doing red. It just seems to be the easiest colour to come out near perfectly... That's four levels of highlight plus a blue wash as per the WD with the Boarboy masterclass. Still to do the "weathering/chipping", which I think I'll do to the Rokkit Pack too (in different colours obviously) - it's looking a bit clean. Once I get to the metal details (which should clean up the red edges) it should hopefully look awesome.

Made a start on the Trukk hood detailing - added the trim and the hood ornament Still need to add rivets, which I hope will make it (it's still looking a little plain in my eyes, but less so than before...) And battle damage I've left some unglued spots under the trim - I'm hoping to drill some large shell holes and break the trim back...

So - that's it, WIP wise, for four weeks. I hope you all can cope! I should still be popping in now and then, and I'll make an effort to at least finish my current battle report, if not get some news ones up during that time as well. They'll be up eventually anyway. Not sure how my 34 model Elite Ork force is going to handle a 60 model Nid horde, but I'm sure they'll have fun doing it!

I was talking about the wider cylindrical bit, but if it's a join, fine by me . And that red is brilliant; I'm going to look for that WD, since red is one of the hardest colours for me. I much prefer orange

You need a radio antenna sort of thing, bent in a certain direction with the 'movement'. It would add to the 'I can't believe it's not moving!' effect (which is totally awesome, by the way).

You should elect someone to update your plog every few days with, like, a joke or something

The antenna could be tired down like that of an army transport.
Traditionally they're mounted on the front bumper and bent back over the vehicle before being tied to the roof rack/roof.
From this you could hang a rag or tie it down with a rag and have the tie have a long loose end that could be swinging in motion with the trukk, some lucky dice/SM helmets hanging from a rear vision mirror in line with the motion would also be good.
also if you were to mod your drivers and crew to also be slanted/fumbling in the same direction it will imply the rock and motion of off-road driving, all these things are subtle movement ques that will give the trukk an overall feel of motion.

just a thought

and as for a weekly joke:
Q. An Open minded Inquisitor, A Heroic Guardsman and the Easter Bunny are stuck in an elevator when they all notice a purity seal on the floor who picks it up?

A. The Easter Bunny the other two don't exist!

I know I know Lame but it's a start next week who knows the joke may actually be funny

@monkeytroll: Thanks as always. Managed to bring IA8 (1.7kg!) - so am hopeful of additional inspiration... (of course, watching Predators and Iron Man 2 on the plane helps too...)

@Artsoldier35: Glad you like the hood ornament, and thanks.

@The Good Green: Thanks. I need to flesh out my plasticard Happy to be an inspiration!

@CommissarKhaine: I'll doubly make sure it's fine before basecoating You do do a brlliant orange...

@HadoukenAvenger: Radio antenna is a great idea - adding it to the list! (and thanks!) Reading along, I see someone has self appointed themselves to update my plog.... funny, I don't remember leaving any documents... don't you have your own plog to update? *hint* *hint*.

@Santobell: Antenna tied down - adding to the list. I was already considering flags/banner for RPJ, though not from an antenna... it's funny you mention lucky (fluffy?) dice - I had had that idea myself - though SM helmets would seem a lot more appropriate . Added. Didn't you think my previous Trukk's showed enough movement? Still - always room for improvement - I'll see what more I can do for the "crew" without going over the top... or maybe I will - who knows?

@whalemusic360: No using my Trukks as excuses!

@everyone: Well, I have arrived safely in Perth. Having some issues getting Internet access sorted, so don't expect too much too soon - but I was planning to keep an eye on things. I just won't be adding any WIP updates - not none at all! Afterall - I'm hoping to get some games in! Thanks for all your efforts to keep my plog alive (especially that go-getter HadoukenAvenger ) but I don't think it will die from sparse updates over four weeks!

Lol, just a silly idea, doesnt even have to be yellow trukk (although that would play towards a NY cab/ bad moon clan) Dark green would work though.

I just thought the checks would fit nicely for any goff elements that you might have in the army. Instead of black and white, you could use red and white to match the dark angels colours.

The taxi sign (if its not a dedicated transport) to show that he'll lug any boyz ta da rumble if dey got enuff teef!!

Maybe give the trukk driver a mohican or a mohican-squig on his head and a few wart things on his cheek.... screaming with a gun in hiz hand like he's yelling the famous line " YOU TALKING TO ME??"

Well in my case his mega armor was made from the Taxi or at least parts of it so it fit in really well he was a Badmoon boss, had his base painted up like a broken road and had a grotling rigger dangling from his choppa
his but was made form the boot and had a I heart NY sicker painted on it (it was a yellow cab) and a number plate dangling by a small chain. he was made from a small scale "Crazy Taxi" resin car.

Sadly his life was cut short by a marauding cat by the name of Toby.

Cool guys. Maybe some inspiration for others - a boyz taxi, a Warboss' limo, security humvee - a real Hollywood or New York themed Bad Moons force...

Or maybe a far flung Bad Moons attachment for Da Dark Angelz (too many existing (unstarted) projects in the meantime!)

Have a team match against my brother and his mate still to do, before my double games against Santobell (though it looks like he might get that one up for me )

Yup

and by then I will have added the extra units I'm hanging out to build as well,

my to do list reads like this:
1. Battle Report
2. Make Thugs (Clan Rats)
3. Paint the Rest of the Army
4. Make Warplock Jezails (Big Guns) & Paint
5. Build/Cast/Buy better bases for them all
6. Design and build 2 new vehicles plus the Doom wheelie Kopta

Should be able to get all that done in 18 months don't you think?

Oh and 7. Build a better board

and after all that I still need to Photoshop up my Identification charts and then my friendly game rules set oh and my Legion of the Damned but I'm taking my time with that last one I want to do the original models justice and not rush any of it.

Without further a do...

Gitsplitta's Stormboyz Nob (WIP, GMS)

Arakasi's Stormboyz Nob "Twin" (WIP)

Artsoldiers35's Trukk (WIP, GMS)

The Stormboyz Nobz have had their white completed and the black neatened up, ready for metallics and Power Klaw glows...

The Trukk has rivets - lots and lots of rivets! (Had to take two pictures so you could see it all!)

In answer to a previous question, and a recent PM, the red on Da Mig Bek and da Stormboyz Nobz is taken from White Dwarf (UK) 365 - May 2010 - 'Eavy Metal Masterclass "Black Orc Big Boss". It is done in 9 stages (hmmm... I seem to have missed the weathering stage on the Stormboyz Nobz - must go back and fix that!)

1. Basecoat Mechrite Red
2. 1:1 Blazing Orange/Mechrite Red thick edge highlight
3. Blazing Orange edge highlight
4. 1:2 Blazing Orange/Vomit Brown thin edge highlight
5. Vomit Brown thinnest edge highlight
6. Wash Asurmen Blue into recesses and shaded areas
7. Weathering: 1:3 Blazing Orange/Vomit Brown applied in small patches
8. Scorched Brown inside above patches
9. Chainmail inside above.

So - no longer stuck in Edinburgh trying to get down to Birmingham. I did manage last week, eventually, but due to tiredness - well - there was little work done and no updates. Still we should be back on track now - although I'm only down with da boyz 3 nights a week now, and will be away from them the week between Christmas/New Year.

@monkeytroll: Thanks! It was a fun day! I'm a little surprised yours has been the only comment here or on the report itself - I thought everyone was looking forward to Da Dark Angelz vs The Skave...

Right - so I still really need to finish da Stormboyz Nobz and Trukk (and put some serious effort into its twin). I have two more battle reports from Oz to do (I'm putting some extra effort into the fluff for these two - the second was a riot in the end, and they are connected ) And then I really need to finish *my* boyz - or at least make some progress...

Thanks everyone for keeping the blog alive whilst I was away!

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/12/15 12:48:01

Thanks everyone!

@Santobell: These rivets were actually quite easy - I just drilled shallow holes for each one, took some plasticard rod and - glue, place, snip, repeat! They aren't exactly smooth on top - haven't decided yet if I'll give them a light file or just leave them as is (Orky!)

@Artsoldier35: Cool. I had been wondering - but given I'm maybe still half way to applying paint, well, there was no reason to bring it up. Same deal with Dread whalemusic360 is doing for me Like Gitsplitta, you'll probably finish well in advance of me. (Oh - and I've seen your Waagh! in the Army Article - totally worth it! Great job!)

Apologies for the delay - I'm having some difficulty uploading images to Dakka As of yesterday, *something* has changed, and my images are corrupting in some way such that Dakka rejects them and they crash GIMP... Work fine in preview, browsers, iPhoto etc still though...

Anyway - have managed to salvage one loading and saving from Preview (no luck on the others yet...)

Having realised whilst writing up the red steps that I hadn't done the weathering on the Stormboyz - in fact, they are only up to step 6 - I *wanted* to complete them, but it would mean wasting some paint (I haven't set up a wet palette yet....) So I had a look around at what else I could do at the same time. Cue my Boyz and Trukk - which I have also been meaning to get back to. They already had step 1 applied, so now for step 2 and 3!

Once I sort out my photos, there will be some more movement on Artsoldier35's Trukk, Step 4 for the above, and then a "spot the change" challenge on Artsoldier35's Trukk

Post by: Arakasi

I'll get it sorted eventually...

Forgot to mention - the three boyz above are the three voted by *you* (that would be all of my readers, not just monkeytroll ) for me to complete painting first - way back when... Their dark green highlighting is coming off a bit stark - especially on the non armour bits - and this was where I went a bit overboard on the red and/or ogryn wash on the skin - gotta get back and touch those up eventually... The bright red of stage 2 & 3 is okay though - it should come together once I get to step 6.

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/12/17 09:14:09

Post by: monkeytroll

What's your plan for re-touching the skin? A green wash?

I keep meaning to add a fleshy wash to my orks, but either forget or become too worried I'll overdo it, and then not be able to recover.

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/12/17 09:20:06

Post by: Arakasi

Yes - planning a green wash. I did a much better job on da Big Mek and da Stormboyz Nobz with the fleshy washes. Of course, I ended up redoing the skin on da Big Mek first - so that is always an option, albeit not my preferred for regular Boyz... unfortunately - practice makes progress - I long gave up trying to get this perfect the first time - I mean - what are Boyz for if not practise? There is certainly enough of them

View image, take screenshot, crop, save - the things I do to bring you these images!

Image quality is poorer - but hopefuly you can make out the changes to the rear tray. I have two more pics from other angles to show it off better - but they will have to wait for now. This is the best pic in my view however

@Gitsplitta: They do a bit, don't they? I've been a bit heavy handed with the highlighting, and had issues with the paint staying (either too thin, or wheels too greasy) - but it does have large flat areas, and I plan to cover up any "issues" with the weathering/chipping steps, and then powders (for my first attempt at powders...)

Love that truck, though I feel the armoured flaps at the weels could be tampered with to add even more sense of movement.

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/12/18 09:05:30

Post by: Arakasi

Hmmm... possibly its too subtle - though more likely it is the photo (from memory) - but if you consider the tray is on an angle, the flaps are actually perpendicular to the ground - they are supposed to give a sense of gravity and/or movement. Maybe it will be more apparent in later pics, or maybe not...

But for your comment - red part 4 - stack 'o pumpkins!

Also, whilst I have been playing around with what to do next (cab, exhausts, roll-bar/searchlights) I finally dealt with something that has been annoying me for a very long time - can you spot the change?

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/12/18 14:22:14

Yeah, that's my observation as well. I do like the lower roof, looks a little more hot-roddy and a little less like 'Mater from "Cars".

I agree thay they're perpendicular to the ground, but I think that a truck bouncing around wouldn't have his flaps perpendicular

And I'll add a vote to lowering the roof, which definitely improves the overall look!

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/12/18 21:38:46

Post by: Arakasi

I appreciate your opinion CommissarKhaine - and will mull over it further. I hate redoing stuff, but I hate taking shortcuts and not doing it right more

Lowering the roof was one of those decisions (and ended up not being that hard anyway...) - it was going to become more obvious once the driver was in place, and makes my plan for the driver side "window" look right rather than wrong...

I really like watching my vision come to fruition. I *really* need to get started on *mine*

@Miss Dee: I'll add it to my list - I might get around to it this lifetime...

@moonshine, Santobell: Thanks! And its not even (half) finished yet...

I'll have to see if I can get another pic up today - all the red is now at stage 6, so now I can start the chipping - including getting back to the Stormboyz Nobz.

Won't bother with the Trukk (pic wise) for now - not enough progress to make it worthwhile yet...

On the weekend, Da Dark Angelz teamed up with (well, were on the same side of the battle as...) Imperial Guard to take on Blood Angels and Salamanders. Only 2 turns, a handful of pics, but some interesting outcomes. I may do a mini batrep for prosperity though... (and to help remember some taktikal notes!) - Still have two more batreps from Oz to do - probably over Christmas/New Year.

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/12/21 10:13:50

Post by: Arakasi

Step 1 is the base coat of Mechrite Red - I don't think that counts That just leaves 4 highlights and one shade. But if you look at that red, I think you'll agree its worth it! (Looks better on the guns, and the Power Klaws of the Stormboyz Nobz, than the wheels)

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/12/21 12:17:58

Post by: Artsoldier35

It looks awesome all over. And my reds are usually

Base Mechrite
Wash Badab or Devlan
highlight with Mechrite
Highlight with mechrite/off brand Ivory mix

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/12/21 12:40:19

Post by: Imperial Monkey

Its on the verge of being over highlighted, but its a thin line that blurs depending on the colour, you are still on the correct side of the line though. It looks great in person as well, although the red wasn't done then

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/12/21 13:01:26

Post by: Arakasi

I know what you mean. I would say that, before the blue wash, it did look overdone, or at least more orange than red. Of course, the chipping to come should bring it back further from that line. Additional weathering (dirt, powders) should break up the wheels further. At least, that is the plan!

Addition of exhausts and roll bars. Left exhaust requires more detail (custom built).... There is still a small detail to be added to the roll bars...

Better view of the roll bars from the rear.

I've applied step 7 everywhere. Tried out using some foam for the wheelz, but decided it was a bit too imprecise for da boyz. These are the only two wheelz I've manged to complete step 8 on - which takes a lot longer (trying to fill the light orange chip areas with brown...)

Wow, now I'll definitely have to give that red a try! After seeing yours I decided to get me a truck as well; I won't be using it as a truck but I figure it would make a mighty fine buggy + konvertin' parts

Just wondering, Arakasi, where is it you buy your plastic tubing your using on your models. May have to make a purchase for something I have in the pipe line.

@moonshine: Thanks! Don't think I'm at Golden Daemon level yet - even if the wheels were, I need to ramp up everything else to the same level! I'm still learning and practising...

@slice'n'dice, Rose_Mountainz, Artsoldier35: Thanks!

@CommissarKhaine: Glad to inspire as always!

@ceorron: Right. Two places I know I have used before: http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk and http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com. I also have in my bag of tricks http://www.model-dockyard.com and http://www.dccsupplies.com - but I don't think I've actually used either of those...

@whalemusic360: Thanks and thanks. I forgot to look for some whilst I was in Oz Maybe I can coax da Boss into letting me look around Edinburgh this week - weather permitting

@monkeytroll: Thanks as always.

Last progress pic update for this year. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone!

So, given the number of comments generated by the wheelz, today I am going to lead with the remaining four:

This is taking a painstakingly long time to apply. It should go faster for da Boyz and Stormboyz Nobz as they have far less to do!

And a final pic of da Trukk for this year:

Main visible addition is the spot light on the roll bar. I have also started the interior of the cab - but its just plain 'ol Trukk parts for now - steering column, gear stick and the body of the driver. Once I have the driver complete, things should get interesting again - as basically I just need to make sure there is room for him! Having him turning the steering mechanism should be fun though (last time was a joy... not)

Enjoy!

Looking good, Arakasi. Have a great holiday.

The 'nid carcass sounds hilarious, Art. It also lead me to picture a grot standing on the wheel cover fiddling with the engine.. or the bug carcass.

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2010/12/23 22:17:11

Post by: Arakasi

Thanks again guys!

Not sure I can fit a suitably sized 'nid carcass on the front - maybe on the back, under a tarp, Independence Day style (maybe with an Ork putting da boot or fist in, Will Smith style )

I do need to put a Grot Rigger somewhere. I was thinking under the gunner - but there may not be enough room. On the wheel cover seems a good alternative - though that is with Armour Plates!

If you can get hold of the stompa gretchin, there's one hanging on which would look great trying to hold on and *not* falling of

There's also the grot rigger from the Battlewagon which has one hand extended out and a wrench in the other. He's perfect for that "falling off" look.

@Miss Dee, slice'n'dice, ceorron: We will see...

@moonshine, CommissarKhaine, Heffling: All good ideas worthy of consideration, when I get back on Tuesday week. I should have the Battle Wagon grot and, thanks to Santobell, I should even have the Stompa grot! Just don't ask where the Battle Wagon is... Of course, slightly more tricky is the twin Trukk - but they don't need to be exactly the same either. Also - I have the FW grot set too - so even more options!

Battle Report!

"Oi! Gavver roun' you lot! Let me tell ya a story ov why Morgrim iz da Boss!" Ozmodii waited patiently as the Ork youths stopped whatever they had been up to and gathered excitedly around him. A grin crossed his Orkish face. Deze boyz were da future of da Dark Angelz. Doze dat proved demselves wud, like 'im, be administ'd wiv ginseed and progloid lands and take dere rightful place in da Inna Circul. But dat woz a long wayz off. For now, dey jus needed ta know wot it meant to be one ov da Dark Angelz - an' wot betta example dan da exploits of da Boss? A hush had come over the youths as they waited for Ozmodii to start. It wud not be long before dey started ta outgrow such disciplin!

"Tell us when da Boss 'ad annuvver go!" the Ork youths chanted. "Or right, Or right!" Ozmodii chuckled. "Fair enuf! Well, az ya know from da last story, whilst try'n ta raise morale, Morgrim fell inta a tricksy panzee an' fishboyz trap. 'E made a valiant effort ta salvage da situation, but woz caught off guard by da panzee dread - no doubt due ta shield'n da boyz earlia - an da Dark Angelz 'ad ta retreat. Temporarily ov course! Once da ringin' in 'is 'ead 'ad stopped, Morgrim began makin' taktikal planz ta teach da panzees an' fishboyz a lesson. Da Rav'nwing woz dispatched ta scout out da panzee an' fishboyz positions - an' when dey discovered da location ov sum pointz ov int'rest to dem, Morgrim decided reliev'n dem ov dem wud be suitable retribution - az well az givin' dem a gud kickin' in da process!"

You know, after re-reading the battle - I realised that half way through if we decided not to try and kill your warboss and go after your home objective we could have probably gone for a draw... As it was, I thought we had too good a chance of winning the game right up until my WL failed to deal one unsaved wound to your warboss (on the charge), and suffered 3 wounds in return

Good battle though, and a remarkable turn around for your orks. Next time, I think we'll just ignore the truk with the KFF and just take out your Warboss and Nobz truk

Looking forward to an Eldar v Ork encounter - though I'm still at a loss for what to do if you get first turn...

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/01/03 21:18:22

Post by: Arakasi

I always find when writing them, especially as I tally the Kill Points turn by turn, that I'm often doing better than I was thinking at the time

Between the firepower levelled at my Warboss, and the Wraithlord charge, he should have died - which would have sealed my defeat I think.

*Please* feel free to ignore the KFF Trukk - I deliberately spread the pain/annoyance amongst all three Trukks in order to mess with my opponent's target priority Most of my opponents know to target the KFF Trukk first - but I guess as you are the first to consistently blow two in first turn - maybe targeting the other two could work for you!

@Yggdrasil: Depends on what you mean by waste I didn't get to spend it on Da Boyz unfortunately. Any progress from last year to this pic is this week only - it just looks more impressive all together

This is where I was at earlier in the week:

Somewhere between those two I've completed most of the black tidy up, especially da wheelz. Da Boyz and da Trukk still need their black fix, and I've even started the black tidy up on the Big Mek's red (I was originally going to finish the robe first...)

All of this is just to get back to finishing the Stormboyz Nobz - ie filling in the metal on the metal and red chipping...

Field a speed bump unit or two to slow them down a bit is generally your best bet. Preferably one with that gets a scout move so you can get them as far across the table as you can before he moves. It's the only way I've ever successfully slowed the trukks down at all ... not that it's ever done me any good

Closer look at the black tidied wheelz:

Black tidied Marine pistols and closer look at the weathering on the Stormboyz Slugga:

Work started on Artsoldier35's Trukk driver...

The Twin Engine in progress...

(You can also see a bit of how the Trukk still breaks down for painting in these two images...)

That's it (image/progress wise) for this week... Still have my last (small) battle report to write up for 2010 - and then I think a "the story so far/catchup" post is in order!

@Imperial Monkey: The colour of the Big Mek's weapon hasn't been changed or worked on since the last time this was discussed I think I was going to see how things progressed elsewhere before making a final decision. I think the choices were black or green - though I could possibly do bone. Red was out simply because there is already a lot of red on the model...

Oh sweet tease, just the bare necked driver and an engine. Did you melt his arms or is that some fancy cut and past job? I can't see any seams. All the tidied up paint looks great too. I hope I can get that good a red when I finally get around to it.

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/01/08 08:29:50

Post by: Arakasi

@monkeytroll: Yes, I think that may be the first you have seen of the twin Trukk. I think I may have cleaned up the chassis and put the wheelz together too - but that's not really pic worthy Bone for the Big Mek Burna would stand out nicely wouldn't it?

@The Good Green: Fancy cut and paste job. His right arm is the standard Trukk driver right arm cut at the wrist and rotated. His left arm is an extended AOBR pistol arm with Trukk driver hand. I'm going to need more practise to get these perfect - I think the photo hides the seams... The most important bit is to extend steering mechanism on his right - as there is currently a gap...

@JacobYeah, Northen: Thanks!

@Matt.Kingsley: Thanks! Just realised in the "everything so far" pic - the top shelf (Stormboyz Nobz and Big Mek) *all* have dead marine bases!

@HadoukenAvenger: Thanks... I think...

Right - this week's progress report!

Artsoldier35's "Great Marine Swap" Trukk WIP:

Now with driver (and gunner) protection. Not that you can see him, but the driver is finished (well, except for some GS work - seams and stuff) too.

Slightly more from the side pic of above.

Additional detailing of the cab top plus addition of the (removable of course!) Stikkbomb Chukka. Again, you can't see it, but the far exhaust has had its holes drilled into it. Still more detailing to do though - hence no clearer pic

Da Shoota Boyz:

Here with the black tidy up finished pre boltgun metal. I have a new theory - whichever ever colour I am currently painting is my new least favourite colour! (Yes, I am now fed up with black!) Although I don't have pics of everyone - the black tidy up (around red anyway) is all done on everyone I'm currently painting - including the Big Mek and Stormboyz Nobz (who I only discovered I hadn't done that when I started the boltgun metal - and hence no photos of them yet...)

The Trukk Big Shoota.

Another Shoota...

Last Shoota in this batch...

And here he is again - but this time with boltgun metal on, well, his Shoota - including the chipping. Same too for one of the Trukk Wheelz - including the rim. Going to need some washes on that metal!

And finally, again, but from a raised angle to show the Trukk Wheel chipping better (and the top of the Shoota as well I guess)

Until next update I guess!

As for the truck: is there a practical reason not to angle the hood a bit? It looks a tad boxy to me. Too many straight lines on an ork model

Last battle for 2010 is now up:
Orks & Imperial Guard vs Salamanders & Blood Angels - 3000pts

@Imperial Monkey: He does look like he's running away from a rolling wheel, doesn't he? Which DA torso piece did you mean - or just any one? I do have the DA upgrade sprue, so I'm sure the have a couple. Something for 'Ard Boyz perhaps? Oh - and have you checked out the DA FAQ? Perhaps you don't need Imperial Fists against me anymore

@s.j.mccartney: Thanks!

@CommissarKhaine: Not spending more time on the wheel than the boy - you forget the time spent on the skin - which the wheel doesn't have!

There is no practical reason (well, that I know of without trying) not to angle the hood a bit. I imagine you mean something like the FW enclosed cab Trukk? In this case though, the boxy look was actually what I was going for - for three reasons:

1) It will look different to my other Trukks (when I make the twin...)
2) I thought it would fit in well with Artsolider35's Humvee Trukk's style/aesthetic - where this bad boy is headed once actually finished!
3) I was trying to mimic a Mach Truck look (on the front)

I am a little concerned about the cleanness of the hood plates at the moment - I may add additional plates and glyphs - much like the back tray. This may break up the straight lines a bit...

Keep those comments/suggestions/critiques coming! They are all appreciated.

@moonshine: Thanks again!

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/01/18 16:30:56

Post by: CommissarKhaine

Ah, skin... The real reason most people play space marines

Reasoning for the boxy look sounds good. Some glyphs might be nice, but thaty's your personal choice - some battle damage would be cool as well and if the hole in the hood is big enough, it would allow you to show off the engine!

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/01/18 18:26:43

Post by: Imperial Monkey

No, the torso I'm on about is on the Ravenwing sprue, instead of having the Imperial Eagle on the front it is a DA logo.
No I've not looked at the FAQ, and tbh I'm not really interesting in DA, got shiny new Guard to be distracted by! (although I would like to have a look...where can I find the FAQ?)

Da Dark Angelz: Meganobz PIP @ 2011/01/19 18:44:57

Post by: Arakasi

@CommissarKhaine: Yeah - at this point its just aesthetic choice There is some battle damage in the form of bullet holes - but probably still too much flat space. The hole in the hood is not going to be big enough to show the engine - but remember - you can see the top of the engine through the hood - and the hood is removable (its supposed to represent Armour Plates)

@Imperial Monkey: Looks like GW is selling the RW upgrade sprue separately now - I'll have to get one

Da Dark Angelz (Orks) - Jan 21 Update

You know, I think there may be just a whisper of light at the end of the tunnel!

Now that I'm on to the Boltgun Metal - the Stormboyz Nobz are finally looking more complete. Gitsplitta's GMS Stormboy Nob:

My "twin" Stormboy Nob:

Artsoldier35's GMS Trukk got put on the backburna while I started to make a concerted effort to bring it's "twin" along. Engine WIP:

Shared the Boltgun Metal love around - Shoota:

Another Shoota:

Da Wheelz - 3 of 6:

Some more progress on the twin Trukk. Occasionally I find myself wondering whether I should even build it - but then I realise how helpful it is to have an example in front of me - that and I get better with each iteration (I think anyway!). You may note the tray is going to be more tray and less wheel guard this time. I may even try a less boxy look for CommissarKhaine Oh - and the engine is complete:

Blocked in the Bosspole bannas on the Stormboyz Nobz, plus some base details. Gitsplitta's GMS Stormboy Nob:

My Stormboy Nob:

Da Big Mek gets involved in the Boltgun Metal action - just on his left side and bottom left servo arm:

Final work on the twin Trukk for this week - tray cleaned up and glued, existing suspension taken off, back axle prepared, more wheelz:

Enjoy!

The big mek looks fantastic, better than the gw stock model by far. It was intressting to hear you add boltgun metal near the end of painting, i'll give it a try usually i do it first by drybrusing.

@Gitsplitta: Right back at ya!

@Artsoldier35: There you are! Only on the backburna this week - honest! Actually, probably more like an inspiration recharge... definitely not forgotten!

@Boyz "R" Us: Thanks. Yeah - I don't think anyone will accuse me of having identical Trukks! Good luck with yours - look forward to seeing it?

@moonshine: The advantage of being able to cull all the best bitz! Though I've noticed a fair few decent Meks with harnesses on Dakka in the time I have been painting him. I usually add Boltgun Metal near the end because I like to clean up with black and it tends to be mostly on the surface of the model and in small amounts - this way I can be less precise with the larger areas. That and the inevitable washes won't damage the surrounding paintwork - just make it look more Orky!

@DamienOfTheWRAAAGH: Thanks!

@Artsoldier35: Good to know!

Right - on to our regularly scheduled update! I think I'll just let the pics do the talking...

Trukk Big Shoota gets some Boltgun Metal...

Big Mek gets some more Boltgun Metal...

Trukk gets some rear suspension. Its not glued yet, which is a good thing - I'm going to redo the springs with copper/electrical wire. The paperclips are no longer doing it for me (Apologies Artsoldier35 - no progress on yours )

The blue of the Rokkit Pack exhausts and Power Klaws begins on the Stormboy Nobz...

Arakasi's red through the ages... Left is my very first, very bright and clean attempt. Middle is my second attempt, and more what I am going for. Right is where I am at currently. I'm planning on seeing what a Baal Red Wash (and perhaps some Badab Black and/or Devlan Mud) can do to tone the orange-y look down a bit - just trying to decide which piece of red is going to be my test bed!

Gitsplitta's GMS Stormboy Nob with more blue work on the thrusters and Power Klaw. Still two more highlights to go! I'm off to Warhammer World next weekend (4th, 5th and 6th) with endtransmission for the Tank Modelling Masterclass - I'll be bringing him along for games against endtransmission (and any other Dakkites that would - and are able to - stop by) so that he can be fully indoctrinated into Da Dark Angelz before his secondment to Gitsplitta's Bad Moonz... Wish him luck! If Imperial Monkey and I get our acts together, he may see some field time against Imperial Fists before making his way across the pond too...

Same for my "twin"...

Mixed up too much blue (I was going to concentrate on just the Stormboyz this week for the next weekend...) so decided to start the blue on the KFF too Still have to fix up those robes (along with everything else)

Right - that's it for this week's update! Enjoy!

They're all coming together so nicely Arakasi. Storm Boy nob aside (which I'm delighted with)... that big mek is just so very cool. Something about the blue/orange combination really trips my trigger... and the conversion is phenomenal. Well done!

Thanks Gitsplitta. Watch that that orange doesn't turn more red some time in the future though... I just can't believe how long I've had him together and *still* not finished painting him! He's running out of basecoat though - so that's something.

On a side note - I'm thinking I'm leaning more towards black for his Burna rather than bone (but either is better than the current green I think...)

They are turning out more colourful than I originally expected... (red, white, blue, green oh my!) but not detracting yet I think...

So, how long till you start to hate blue?

Lots of lovely progress whilst I've been incommunicado, all coming together very nicely. Nice to see some progress on your twin trukk too.

Haha! It's funny because it had crossed my mind! But I think blue is safe - there just isn't enough of it, and it's only on these three models mostly

Another DA fan checking in. Really, really great stuff. Loving the weathering & chipping on your reds, too. Your first red is very much like the old 2nd-ed codex DA bolter red, but the later ones are definitely nicer. I think some washes may well get you the less-orange look you want.

These are looking really really nice, as to the red, I kinda like it. It obviously takes a hell of a lot of time to build up so just leave it, it looks good and weather beaten. The mek would look good with the blue, could even try some OSL I'mlooking forward to seeing these in person some tim in the not-too-distant-future...

Thanks for looking everyone - as well as your kind comments.

@Mannahnin: Welcome to the (slow) madness! I hope the washes have the desired effect...

@CommissarKhaine: Curious to see how the tray (and the hood ) evolve on this truck too - it's the small differences that make it interesting...

@Imperial Monkey: We'll see. I'll have to run a test this week and present it for further thoughts/discussion. Wouldn't like to have come this far and not gone the extra mile! I'm considering trying some light OSL around the KFF and Power Klaws - we'll have to see how that goes too! Look forward to showing them to you in person too!

Doh - I've just seen the Bloodclaw and Force Weapon blues in the new WD - do I need to redo my Power Klaws now?

Ok - opinion needed DakkaDakka!

As mentioned in last week's update, I've been meaning to get around to playing some more with the red. Now I have and need your expert opinions! (Picture quality willing...) What else are Ork boyz for?

Trukk wheelz. The front plates have a single glaze of Baal Red Wash. Not easy to differentiate I know...

Shoota boy with Shoota/Slugga with a single glaze of Baal Red Wash. (Also, I've given the Ork skin - on all the Shootas displayed in this post - a Thraka Green wash in the recesses where I went a bit overboard with Baal Red/Ogryn Flesh previously - hopefully looking better)

Shoota boy with Shoota with a double glaze of Baal Red Wash. Single wash of Badab Black on the metal only.

Shoota boy with Shoota with a single glaze of Baal Red Wash. Single wash of Badab Black over entire shoota (red and metal).

Group shot - hopefully making the differences more apparent? Big Mek in the background shows the unwashed (orangy) red for comparison.

I know what I'm leaning towards - but any opinions (or suggestions!) would be most appreciated at this point! (Just be tactful if you think I've ruined them )

I always use a badab black wash on my steel parts, it just makes it look more natural in my opinion. I think a single glaze on the red parts and a single glaze on the metal is a winner. If you want to make your metal bits look worn or slightly rusty, after the black wash dries, give them a single wash of sepia. Gives them a nice, slightly brown patina that is very convincing for orks. You wouldn't want it to blend in too much with your red gun bits.. but you might experiment with one figure just out of curiosity.

Well the skin definitely looks much better. As for the Reds....hmmm. I think I like the one on the left which has the single layer of Red and then single layer of black over all of it. But I'm more of a darker Ork player. Either way they all look fantastic.

Personally I prefer the single glaze of baal and badab, I think any more and it's starting to muddy the detail you've put in.

@Gitsplitta: Just concentrating on the red at the moment - so thanks for the part relating to that! I agree and do the same (black wash on steel parts), and will be looking to add further worn/rusty elements once I'm happy with the red... This is what the Ork boyz are for - experimenting - before I do the end result on the Big Mek and Stormboyz...

@Artsoldier35: Good to know I'm not the only one who thins the skin is looking better. I don't think I'll do much more on it here - I've managed not to overdo the red in later boyz - so its a non issue after this (for now). I too like the black over red - but can't decide between that and the double red with black over metal. I think it may be the weathering that Gits alludes to above that may make the difference (I think it will be better on the separate red and black washes as Gits suggests) - the black all over just looks closer to done! BTW - did some more on your Trukk last night too!

@wib: That is also a concern. I was happy with how the wash blended some of my highlighting without totally obscuring it though. But I wouldn't want to do much more (if anything) on the red past these stages, just need to bring the metal up to the same standard...

I think the two washes of Baal red + black on the metal only looks the most vibrant. If you want darker, it's black all over, but I started playing in the GW 'red' period, so I like my stuff bright

I agree with CK, the 2 red washes look nice and warm, the red and black looks a little grimier, and I get a 'worn' vibe from your guys rather than a 'grimy' feel.

edit: How about a red wash followed by devlan? Might keep the warm vibrant tone and just darken it rather than dirty it, I find I tend to use the badab mainly on metallics for similar reasons.

Personally I like the red and black washes most as it brings the red down into the same sort of tonal range as the rest of the ork.

The double red wash seems to have obscured some of the weathering you so carefully added, so I'm not sure about that one. The single red wash looks slightly better, but still a little bright for my taste.

The skin is certainly looking a lot better with the extra wash too.

All in all... looking very cool indeed. I can't wait to see them all in person on friday.

I quite like the single wash of red, single wash of black. Really helps deepen the colors and not make it so orangey.
If brightness is the goal, the double red does really nicely!

Awesome Work Arakasi!!

Quick update - I've given everything except the Big Mek a Baal Red Wash - as I do prefer that over without. I think I'll hold off a further wash until I have more of the other areas done - it may not need it - and I don't want to obscure my hard work!

Made it to Nottingham. Gitsplitta's Stormboyz Nob has been fielded in battle against endtransmission's Guard and made a decent accounting of himself - battle report to follow at some point.... Tank Modelling Masterclass tomorrow!

You'd leg'it too if you were sitting in cover and just watched your 9 boyz get gunned (and flamed) down...

Maybe I should have gone to ground?

He was later unceremoniusly targetted by a melta squad camping an objective with nothing better to do...

Oh - and I count his tally (over three games) to be 1 Chimera, 1 Chimera assist (1 pen of 4 alongside Morgrim), 1 Sentinel and a handful of Guard.

The defining moment was his first Chimera. With one wound remaining, he exploded it, killing several nearby fleeing Guardsmen, took a wound himself - but saved by the ineffectual Rokkit Pack on his back!
