The painful $:€ rate and high buy in has stopped me from doing stupid crap and pledging. I have the money, but comparing it to the exchange rate of the OG KS I hesitated on, no, thinking about it stings. I won't ever get to play, anyway. Just a few more hours if temptation resist.
Good thing that half the stuff is pin-up related which doesn't excite me at all, if there were more monster updates I'd cave.
Yeah I have to admit that the exchange rate from last years, we will go with interesting events has stung compared to the glory days of sterling being king but its still Kingdom Death and you will never get a deal like this on these products again...is the reasoning I'm using to justify it.
Yep, I figure I'll end up buying all the expansions anyway.so I might as well pay a large wad of cash now to get them cheap, rather than a huge pile of cash in three years. After buying the first set of expansions at close to full price I don't want to do that again.
The whole reason I even went in on this one is I missed out the Dragon King, since then hes literally hooked me for another 500 dollars on top of that.
Thanks to my PC needing replacement, I've had to drop my plans to go 750. I'll be keeping the 300 for this KS, and depending on how things go... well we'll see in the future if there are addons at pledge manager.
Hmm. I'm on the fence about dropping down to just the Silver Lantern. Spent more on my Horus Heresy stuff than I'd intended. The last couple of expansions have been pretty neat though. I'll see what's what tomorrow I guess.
I'm still on the fence about the Gambler's Chest. There is more game content now, with a whole new tree of innovations, and quite a bit of gear and armor sets, on top of the new concepts like philosophies of death and scouts. But it's hard to tell if the new stuff will make the game any better or not.
On top of that, I won't really use most of the miniatures. And even though they aren't calling them pinups, a lot of the figures in the gambler's chest are just pinups. That new gatherer miniature is clearly a pinup, and isn't going to fit in with the style of the other figures, even if I wanted a narrative sculpt of someone with a bone sickle.
Anyone feel like the game will be a nightmare to organize in two years?
When setting up a "new" campaign, will I need to source every freaking card, and build elaborate custom decks of only the relevant settlement events, hunt cards, gear, etc...? It feels almost comically unwieldy with how every damn monster now, no longer plugs in, but is their own custom campaign, adds 5 more, more, years, etc... etc... etc....
What is a Kingdom without a King, after all? You could argue Satan fills that role, but...I ain't paying $100 for that.
Plus he'd already designed the minis, took our money, produced at least some of them, then decided to cancel it when he realized he wouldnt make enough because he has no restraint when it comes to adding stuff. He should finish the expansion he started and promised from the last kickstarter.
Lots of folks seem to be moving towards the end when the money will really be coming out here, so if you refresh the page enough you should be able to snag one!
Vorian wrote: I think that's where the node system is meant to come in
I hope so, as quite a few now come with tweaks to the campaign, and settlement events. All I wanted settlement events-wise was a big deck of new general-purpose ones as the base game, and current expansions repeat far too often in any given campaign.

I am not sold on that story, I doubt any models reached injection molding, given it is Poots we talk about, I do believe he simply could not make it work and decided to scrap it, maybe it was not fun, maybe it gave too much of the story away.

Yes, but I'm just going to stick with a few expansions. I'm also not confident that the changes being made in the 1.5 version, or the advanced rules, are actually going to make the game better.

Didnt people post sprues labeled "Lantern Festival"? I thought we saw proof some stuff got to production.

I've been doing exactly that, waiting for a $777 opening but no joy yet!
I posted about the comments from the backer who runs the site (apparently, but I believe it is indeed them) a day or two ago in this thread,
I've not seen anything further from them but I;ve only been dipping in and out so don't know if ruffled feathers were soothed and all will carry on as normal or if they are indeed planning to close the site
I've been refreshing seeing Black Friday lantern pledges for $185 opening up, but they're no good for me.. I need the full game. Holding out hoping for one of the $300 BF pledges to open up
Vibrant Lantern guy was feeling under-appreciated and said he was going to take his ball and go home, but people made amends and everything is back to normal for now.
Glad everything worked out for Vibrant Lantern. I've been reading the background on their site and can't wait for them to flesh out the rest of the old stuff and start adding new stuff.

I'm on the fence about the Gambler's chest as well, and whether the Dragon King xpac is worth it. Good discount now but with my (lack of) play-time I doubt I'd get through a campaign before he has a site sale.
Very tempted to to the GC and just sell off the narrative minis. Decisions...

Managed to snag a Black Friday gold lantern Afraid I can't afford to add on anything else.. I was gonna go for the regular $250 pledge but this made it just $50 more for the gambler's chest rather than $100.
Only he's screwed if he cancels anything this time because of the all-in pledge levels. If he had to refund an incomplete expansion at the KS prices to 4000 people who were only paying 60-70% of that...

Who says he has to give any refund to those people? In fact, what's to stop him from saying the expansion grew bigger than he expected, so he's charging everyone that gets it an additional fee? Or just padding their shipping charges to make up the difference?

I was thinking the same, but I'm not sure there will be much demand for the narrative miniatures in the Gambler's Chest. I think anyone interested in narrative sculpts is going to get it themselves. I guess there might be some people that only want one or two of the sculpts, but not enough of them to justify buying the whole thing. I just don't think I'd get around to selling them out one by one on ebay. I'd just decide it wasn't worth the time and they'd all just sit in my closet for years.
I'm sure I'd buy a few of the figures when they release. Right now, though, there are far too many "can't miss" expansions for me to even consider the Gamblor's Chest.
I suppose I'll just leave it off for now. If we are allowed to add stuff in the pledge manager, hopefully more will be known about the rules in the Gambler's Chest and I'll have a better idea of whether or not I even want the advanced rules. Or maybe there will be something in the last few reveals that makes it must-have for me.
Unless noted otherwise all pledge levels that say include all new expansions include all new expansions, so yes 777$ and up include this thing.
On my part I am overjoyed since the sparrow king sculpt is the single sculpt I really do not like from the entire line but everything else in this expansion is what I really wanted to see.
there are 2 slots on the 1.5 to be revealed and 4 slots on gamblers chest iirc, other than that I do not know if he has anything else under his sleeve.
We wait the 24h mark to see a new update, but its an expectation rather than something announced.
Dear God... my "all things gameplay" pledge, just meant I topped up to $1800.
My wife is being super supportive(enabling), but that is a terrifying amount of money, and I can't believe we're entertaining it. We can afford it, have no kids, no debts, etc... but some part of me just feels sick over it as a lump-sum payment. :-p
Our ONLY justification right now, is that spread across 3-ish years of releases, and with tons of replay... its actually not that crazy. One less couples "date night" per month over that span of time, playing this instead of a movie and cheap dinner... and its actually paid for.
Man... i'm so torn. I wish I knew how all the content integrated better though. There's now so much KD content, spread across.... what... eight custom campaigns, all of which use different components at a time, etc?
I wish the campaign book add-on covered new stuff too, and not just the old expansions.
The Campaigns of Death is going to be as much, if not more, guidelines and advice for crafting custom campaigns - the 3 included campaigns are explicitly examples of the broader systems and ideas at work.

That's why I dropped. If I wanted in, it would have to be all-in, and I couldn't sleep comfortably knowing I dropped that much on a game I'd never played before.
I also compared it to what else I could buy with that money and... yeah... I was out...
Alpharius wrote: As much as it might fit thematically to play KD with yourself, is it a game that lends itself to solo play at all?
Yes, I've only ever played it by myself upto now as it's a game that requires a lot of time to play and if you want to run a campaign with people a regular set of people who will keep coming.
It's pretty simple to play solo, you just control all four surivivors during a showdown rather than one, and the settlement phase is a bit less interactive as you make all the choices.
Alpharius wrote: As much as it might fit thematically to play KD with yourself, is it a game that lends itself to solo play at all?
From a strategic point of view it might be best played solo, you loose the social interaction and the arguments over the tough choices witch is a core experience of the game, but play more optimally.

We won't count how many start collecting boxes I've purchased in 2016 that are currently unopened, unbuilt and brand new still in my garage.
It can probably be counted on at least two hands too.
Oh, I know. I've been sitting on three Start Collecting: Flesh Eater Courts, and one of their big collection box, for a year. We're all guilty of that sin, but seeing it in one shot, and one time is still jarring.
Lets just say I have about 4x the value of my Gamblers Lantern pledge worth of Space Marines in piled up sprues and boxes and I haven't even started assembling anything yet.
On a similar note apart from the starting Surivivors, White Lion, Screaming Antelope, Butcher, Spidicules and Gorm all my 1st release Kingdom Death stuff is also sat in boxes untouched.

So I want to make sure i'm not confused, but despite being silly ( I LOATHE Dragon Ball Z), the Super Sayjin expansion DOES have significant gameplay value right? It seems to, but that and the Pathfinder bundles seem to inhabit this weird space of having a lot of gameplay content, but also barely fitting thematically.
Does the Pathfinder item come with a God Frogdog pledge? Or not because its a cross-over?
It's going to be an exciting finish. Who knows how much stuff is still lurking in the shadows.
As this thing reaches a fever pitch and we see another expansion add to how a previous one is used (Spicules + Abyssal Woods, Lion God + Silver City), I wonder if we'll see something that will bolster the use of the Lonely Tree.
At this point that's probably the least used expansion. Will we see something expand upon it?
Abyssal Woods seemed like a great spot to do it, but Poots said the tree is very far removed from the Woods themselves, so that's a bust.
No offense to those of you who are all-in but I hope that's it for expansions, I'm already having epic delay flashbacks.
I do expect to see something nice for the double lantern on the Gambler's Chest, possibly the King or Storm Knight as a nemesis monster, although there are very valid arguments against either of those.
Welp, there go all my plans. The Abyssal Woods expansion is just too good to pass up. That much content would be a good deal at $200; at $150 it's a steal. Plus, I already have the flower knight and spidicules to complete the campaign.

I had an opposite reaction; I'd rather spend $200 in 2-3 years after it's been fully developed than $150 now. Having really looked through the expansions over the last day and thinking about adding 1 or 2 in, I think Silver City is most compelling at this point. As a solo-only player, I find the mid game to be the hardest part to stay mentally engaged, so if there's something that completely flips that part of the game on its head, I'm in.
Quick question for KD vets. How bad, and/or game effecting are the expansion's typos? Boardgamegeek says that the cards in existing expansions frequently feature typos, some of which effect the game.
With Poots confirming that expansions reprints won't see any fixes, I am just wondering if this ranges from "normal folks won't even notice", to "actually compromises playability"?
Oh man, just realized this is the 4th most funded Kickstarter of any kind ever! Unfortunately the top 3 all had trouble delivering, but Exploding Kittens wasn't far behind and delivered fantastically (the limited scope helped, of course). I think Poots has really learned but I'd be focusing on the earlier deliverables and not the ones years out if you have to choose what to pledge for! Those of you pledging for everything, it should certainly be a fun journey though especially getting multiple shipments as you go.
Man... it is probably good my wife has such a tight clutch on the purse strings, because the 2000$ ALL THE THINGS pledge is looking really tempting lately. I think I can keep myself to only 450$, but the Butcher pinup basically demanded 15 more $. That's the first pinup I have really dug in a while!

It won't be a problem soon. With the Death Chicken update, they shifted more than 120 God Frog-Dog Pledges in an hour. There's only a handful left now.

I grabbed one of them just in case. The goblin dragon thing pushed me over the edge. I don't want all the new expansions but I figure I'll just sell off the ones I'm not interested in once they arrive.
Anyone know what is going on with the Lantern Festival? Should we be expecting it to show up tomorrow?
With the amount of all in pledges, it makes me wonder if it would be easier/ financially more viable to bundle some of this stuff up as new core games.
The Abyssal Woods seems like almost an entire core game in an expansion as it is.
That's a good point Highlord. Really with all these alternate campaigns and almost total conversion expansions, it is basically 2 or 3 games all told. You even need Spiducules and Flower night for Abyssal Woods anyway, so one could probably do well just putting those all together as an entire other game that can stand on its own or merge with KD 1.5. I wonder why the didn't go that way. Come to think of it, I suppose not many games go that way anymore?
Board game raises over $10 million, becomes one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns ever
A board game has raised $10 million on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.
It's a cooperative, immersive, tabletop board game in which players struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic world peopled with sexy pin-up characters. But still, it's a board game.
The crowdfunding campaign for Kingdom Death: Monster 1.5 launched strong on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. It set Kickstarter records by raising its first million in only 19 minutes , faster than any project ever before on the popular crowdfunding platform.
Currently, with more than $10 million raised and a bit over a day left in the campaign, the game is thefifth most funded project ever to run on Kickstarter. The other top ten highest earning products include Pebble smartwatches, the "coolest cooler," a deluxe travel jacket and a tiny desk toy called a Fidget Cube.
New York City-based game designer and founder of Kingdom Death Adam Poots is, unsurprisingly, excited. Earlier today, he announced to his campaign backers, "I am f---ing pumped!"
Poots says he has raised double-digit millions because he works hard and follows his passion. Also, he is motivated by the support he feels from his fans.
He tells CNBC, "I attribute my success to all the amazing/terrible Japanese cartoons I've watched that have taught me to never give up, do what's in my my heart and leave the rest to God or fate or whatever, be a genius of hard work and not to believe in myself ... but to believe in the people that believe in me."
Poots expects to be able to deliver all elements of the game by December 2020.

Yeah, that occurred to me as well. When the update first dropped, I skimmed over the price and went straight to the contents. When I scrolled back up to check the price, I was shocked that it wasn't at least $200. I'd imagine an expansion of that size, with so many monsters, including a Dragon King-sized one, to be at least $300 at retail. Poots' estimate seems a little optimistic to me.

I can see it viable for the KS probably been at cost or slightly above cost, given some of the contents are already tooled, but outside the KS? I can see it rise easily.
What has Poots done to me, I'm going to have to ebay off some of the 40k I never touch anymore as I'm in at Satan plus the three crossovers that aren't included, totally don't need the two extra t-shirts as well right?
Just so long as he doesn't add another crossover I might just get to keep my man parts when the charge appears on the credit card.
I was wondering about that as it seemed like there was an odd number left? I'm surprised he wouldn't want them available for people to up to at the end? Still 9 hours to go!
He also slightly duped a lot of people promising an "all things gameplay, slightly discounted" pledge earlier, and then apparently just forgetting about it when it was clear $2000 pledges were still moving quickly.
I'm in, God help me, for $2k, but his enthusiasm oscillates between "infectious" and "I don't trust you".
The only time I spent that much on a KS was for the Form 1 3d printer, and in looking back I think it was a bit of madness that I took the risk . It worked out well for the most part, but there were so many other similar campaigns that didn't...
I think his tiered delivery schedule is really going to help, along with the fact that none of that is included in the amount pledged now (man - if shipping wave costs were included, can you imagine what the total would be now!?).
Sirius42 wrote: As I said, dick move, he probably realised he'd overstretched himself
I doubt he overstreched but he likes to min/max his profits like a good capitalist RPG fan. Plus he has now ensured a fortune when he opens the pledge manager.
Just doing the quick math based on the sprues and I reckon he is going to clear an easy 5mil profit after costs and before tax etc.
Like GW he is selling cheap mass produced plastic at the price of boutique resin, his per unit cost is pennies. If your cynical like myself and assume that everything he has unveiled since he doubled his funding goal in a few hours was unlocked in those first few hours and then dribbled out for the rest of the campagin to maximise profits he is laughing all the way to the bank.
As such I am not surprised that he has purged another set of pledges.

Yeah... this KD will be a fascinating post-mortem, and a snap-shot of what kind of spending extremes/value propositions people will consider for trendy/boutique items.
Fact is... if my brain was working properly I would remember that I could build two LARGE 40k armies which I might play for the next twenty years, for what the wife and I are throwing at this.
Meanwhile, Percival Lantern has definitely crossed a threshold, by its non-reception, into the realm of people just refusing it outright.
The Add-On amount for extra Gambler’s Chest is now +$150, with two exceptions. If you have a Black Friday Lantern pledge or a Black Friday Lantern Upgrade Pledge, you may add 1 Gambler’s Chest to your rewards for $100. Thank you in advance for understanding.

One of the significant factors of dropping my pledge was when I realised I could finish 6 of my 40k armies for the same money.
In my opinion if you've waited until the last 12 hours of a kickstarter to pledge you deserve to pay more than people who took a gamble earlier when half the stuff was unknown.

How is it a gamble when you can pull your pledge at any time before the end?
So am I seeing the sprue right in that there's a "ball" between the miniature piece and the sprue itself? That would make it *much* easier to cut the piece from the sprue! (Cut between the ball and sprue to remove the piece with the ball. Then cut between the ball and piece.)
Just so you guys know, this was NOT preplanned! We started working on it after I re-reolled murdered and decided to have it kill a spot!
Adds a new terrain card! Find the Murder Victim and chase the murderer settlement event out of your campaign wooo!! (of course someone has to be murdered first!)

That makes a change, normally you try to do it during the showdown.

Answer: it's not a gamble!
Only if you completely cancel your pledge is it not a gamble. But if you wanted to move to a different pledge level, the good ones are gone.
So, seeing as this is a bit of a clusterfeth to dig through.. apologies.. I'm sitting on a Black Friday Lantern Upgrade right now, does this pledge allow for me to add this fether to my pledge, or is it verboten?
So far I've been able to hold the line at $225 (BF Silver Lantern and $40 for Campaigns of Death). In the last day, Silver City and Abyssal Woods are drawing me the more I think about it as they fit in more with the old expansions.
I keep checking every few minutes to see if one of Gambler's Lantern pledges opens up. I would up to that level if I could. Still going to spend about $400-500 right now.

I want that board but I'm not paying $100 for it until we get more details. I'll either hope for the Pledge Manager allowing additions or buy it when it hits retail.
Yeah board is the only bit I really don't care for from the current pics, just seems like it would make the game difficult to play, and how on earth would it interact with the cardboard terrain.
If it does turn out to be a triumph I'll just have to try and grab one at a later date.
The original campaign had him prototyping the showdown on some sort of dungeon block system, but I don't remember him talking about the final showdown board being plastic.
BrookM wrote: May be misremembering, but wasn't a plastic board also looked at during the first campaign, ultimately dismissed?
If I remember right he was surprised that there was interest based on his prototypes. I don't think the idea was pursued with much enthusiasm at the time.
I have put in $5 so that I can forget about it entirely and Adam can buy a coffee.
He has been looking at a board like that since he released his 1st mini a decade ago and was never able to get somthing satisfactory.
So he has either had a stroke of insparation on how to do it, or he needs any old bit of tat to throw on so he can get that 2nd Ferrari.
It could also be this years lantern festival and ending up being a convenient 4-5 year interest free loan.
There was requests for a Secret Weapon KDM tablescape board during their KS Adam must have taken note and tablescape boards are made by the same factory as KD plastics.
The 12,000,000 Dollar Women! I mean.... Woman and Man, that is now a Woman! Pinup Percival and Anonymous Survivor! Jon-Troy Streaming the Pinup Disciple of the Witch Sculpt!
For some reason when I see that board I get pings of the "AvP 3D terrain board" that never got made.
Don't know why, maybe because it's something added at the last minute it seems like a "I'll sell it and figure out how to make it later" kind of deal...
EDIT: That Witch render kept the "Dount" spelling error

I've never heard that before - why is this?
It was included in the Pinups of Death box collection along with the "Sweet Spot" Settlement event where you either died, gained the belt or gained the belt and had a super-transformation that boosted your stats as well as swapping gender.

@Ringtailfox Fans, I jokingly promised Anna that I wouldn't put up the Ringtail Fox Set, unless we hit $13M. Don't worry, I am super excited to create it. It just won't be part of this Kickstarter Campaign. It's scope got so big, It would end up being its own core game!
I'm having a bit of a laugh just hitting refresh and seeing the different limited pledges open up and get snatched up within 5 seconds. Actually saw a Gamblers Lantern 2nd face open up.
Triple9 wrote: I'm having a bit of a laugh just hitting refresh and seeing the different limited pledges open up and get snatched up within 5 seconds. Actually saw a Gamblers Lantern 2nd face open up.
Saw a Frogdog open up, but was too slow to get it. It's probably futile for me to keep checking to see if a Gambler's Lantern opens up. With only minutes to go now, I'm sure everyone who has one of those is going to keep it. If they were going to cancel, I would think they would have done it earlier.
It's simply mesmerizing. I can't stop hitting refresh. I have no intention of upgrading(unless a gambler's lantern for some reason opens up), but the dance is crazy right now.
Saw a Frogdog open up a couple times, but I missed it each time. So, finished with my Black Friday Silver Lantern, with a total of $500 pledged. I expect I'll drop another $250-400 in the pledge manager. Assuming it's an option, but given how some of these big expansions only had concept art, I would bet once there are renders there will be hundreds of people clamoring to get them. I couldn't justify the price tag on the Ivory Dragon, not without a better picture to go by.
This will drastically change the boardgame scene, it will have effect wider than just creating more content for KDM or place a boardgame in the league of massively funded projects.
Yeah, I dropped a ton of money on it (it takes the #1 slot on amount pledged handily) but I also have loved nearly everything I've gotten from KD so hopefully that trend continues. Plus over the 3-4 years delivery is likely to take it's really not that outlandish of an amount, but damn is there sticker-shock when you do it all at once.
I spent the last hour F5'ing, and actually snagged a Satan's Lantern, so for only a $16 upgrade from Gamer's Lantern I got every pinup and promo from both KS'. I'll definitely sell the bulk of them cheaply to help offset the damage I just did.
That ALL said... this has been fascinating. Its a perfect storm of...
- A legitimately good game
- A weird cult of personality
- Some amount of thoughtless people looking to profit later
- Some people pledging irresponsibly above their means...
And i'm sure a hundred other factors.
The result is a game I can't wait to own, and as Psychotic Storm suggests, a weird shift in perception of our hobby. It certainly speaks to a broader acceptance, and maybe also a tacit admission that GW is right, and that the hobby is forever, with people willing to spend big in the right niche.
Crazy. I started at $200 and ended at $770 which is nothing compared to some, and I'm gonna drop another $3-400 in the pledge manager if he decides to let people do that afterwards.
I kept everything low budget and am gambling on the idea that there are a ton of all-in pledges who will be flooding the market with the expansions they don't want 3 years from now. In fact, most of my funds went to updates and Gambler's chests.
My rough guess is they'll be ordering 18-20k core games and there are only 10k in production. Bets on the how long before the first delay is announced?

Didn't he pretty much already soft-announce a delay in Update 35 of 1-3 months? Seems like a non-bet there...

1st delay was already announced no? (everything pushed back 1-3 months).
And you are probably right on the expansions flooding the market. Once I added up the stuff I wanted (6 new expansions and 10 pin-ups), it was an extra $100 to an all-in pledge. All of the extras will go to ebay.
You are both correct he did say it in an update (I was thinking only in comment chat), but "managing expectations" and officially announcing a delay are different things.
It was mostly a joke about how quickly the ravaging horde of KS backers (myself included) can turn on you once the rosy glow of the campaign is gone and the adrenaline wears off.
managed to only buy the 1,5 upgrade pack. Was tempted by a lot of the expansions, but couldn't decided which one I wanted, so I got none. lol. The waiting time and the lack of armour kits were also deciding factors. also, I still have a lot of the original expansions sitting in their boxes.

That's actually something I'd forgotten.
Didn't Poots mention that each/most expansion would have a separate armor kit?
he said that he will try, but the new armours are particularly demanding because they need to be interchangeable with everything else.
This is the decision to go with narrative sculpts anyway, tbh the community is split over the subject I am with the side that does not care about armour kits and wished he abandoned them producing narrative sculpts for the old expansions too.

Not sure what he will do in the end.
I think the Gambler's Chest could be a concession to this end, as most of those sculpts are based on armor from the core game.

So anyone else expecting either the Abyssal Woods or Ivory Dragon to be cancelled in three years because it just didn't meet Poots expectations, like he did with the Lantern Festival?

I wouldn't necessarily be surprised but I'm not expecting it - I'm sure he has actually learned some stuff from the first Kickstarter.
My worry is that Ivory Dragon was totally unplanned (apparently) and the Abyssal Woods sounds like it's going to be more expensive than he might be planning on.
Loopstah wrote: So anyone else expecting either the Abyssal Woods or Ivory Dragon to be cancelled in three years because it just didn't meet Poots expectations, like he did with the Lantern Festival?
Absolutely.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that one of the big expansions will get dropped, and I'd extend that chance to to the Silver City Expansion.
I'm guessing that the biggest probability will be the Abyssal Woods due to the sheer cost of producing the 20+ miniatures, and that he won't like how it interacts with the rest of the game or something like that. The big difference will be that the Abyssal Woods is costing backers $150 and shipping, where as the Lantern Festival was only $45 with free* shipping, so the cost of a mass refund will hit much harder. Ivory Dragon because Poots won't like the way it works as an end to the game - same thing with Lantern Festival, and the Silver City due to the same idea. Anything that adds either a major location or a large change in the game experience, and many models to the game, I feel has the potential of getting put on the chopping block.
I talked to Poots for quite a while at gen con about the lantern festival. He was quite frank in the intent was to make an extension beyond any campaign, whether it be core, dragon king or sunstalker and they just couldn't make it work during play testing. The campaigns were just too different to plug in the same extension at year 25 (guessing this is where the node system ended up coming from). Based on the talk, I wasn't all that surprised when the lantern festival was cancelled and took away that they just weren't able to make it work as intended. I don't think there was any malice in the thought, but more the refusal the bang a square peg in a round hole.
I don't think he'll do another Interest Free Loan/Cancellation this time around.
(I hope!)
Anyone do a comparison of the Expansion Price is 1.0 vs. in 1.5?
That might give us an indication of...something.
And, as noted, there's no 'free shipping' this time around, so we'll all be paying 'actual costs' now - and if he's smart, and he is, he'll work out a deal with UPS or somesuch and actually probably make money there too.
I wonder how many more millions he'll make IF he allows add ons in the PM?

No I agree; I highly doubt that cancelling it was done maliciously, but I don't think that the satisfaction of the game/rule contents was the only factor. I do believe that the full cost of production and shipping would have cost more than the cost of a full refund, and that that had a major factor in the cancellation. What becomes aspects included in the Advanced rules and the Campaigns of Death expansion will be interesting.
On another note, my payment and funding confirmation just happened, so that's good.

Maybe... $4M - $5M more, minimum?
Yeah, I think the higher prices and having shipping included will make the cancellation much harder to do, but I still wouldn't be surprised is something gets pulled from being an option (Plastic Board).
I'm sure the PM will allow for additional funds, and I'm sure that it will be opened multiple times. I doubt all of the renders and masters will be done by the time he has to collect shipping information for the first wave, and I'm sure he knows that he'll be able to pull in several million dollar more (that won't have the KS tax) after the renders are made and people like the models. But I'm wondering if he limits the amount of money a person will be able to add, or the number of expansions etc. as a means of keeping the amount he has to produce for the KS down to more predictable/anticipated levels, and to have a market for the expansions to sell after fulfillment.
Smellingsalts wrote: Has anyone else been charged for the kickstarter yet? I have not and I am a little worried.
I'm not worried. It is the weekend, and I'm willing to bet that, given the amount of money involved, someone at Kickstarter has to manually review and approve the project before hitting the "take all the monies" button.
I wonder how many more millions he'll make IF he allows add ons in the PM?

I would honestly be flabbergasted if he didn't allow additions in the pledge manager. Given how many of the expansions were just a few images of concept art, it would have been a hard sell to get some people on board at some of those prices without renders. But once there are renders? I expect people will be clamoring for more. I couldn't justify going for the Ivory Dragon based off a blurry drawing. But if the renders wow me, hell yes I would go for it. Plus, there has to be a mechanism in place to allow people to make up for the difference if they didn't calculate their initial pledge correctly.
What I don't expect, however, is for Poots to reopen the pledge manager multiple times. Open the PM once all the renders are in to let people finalize their pledges, then close it for good and submit the orders to the factories.
Bob: no, I was editing a double post and Dakka removed one of them automatically, so both posts disappeared... I guess "d'oh" would be the appropriate response...

Yeah I didn't see a point in buying expansions coming out in 2-3 years since I don't even know if I'll still be playing the game by then
I just got charged as well, so it seems to be in full swing finally.
As I mentioned previously I don't think he can afford to cancel any expansions this time around because of refunds to the all-in pledges. I expect all of them to ship even if some of the gameplay isn't quite up to the previous standard (I'm sure the minis will still be high quality).
I wonder if the 12 million dollars people just gave him will be enough that all the plastic minis he make might, just might *gasp* - be available in his webstore at all times for people to buy when they so desire.
Schmapdi wrote: I wonder if the 12 million dollars people just gave him will be enough that all the plastic minis he make might, just might *gasp* - be available in his webstore at all times for people to buy when they so desire.
If he could play the game right, he could have himself an ongoing gaming company, in relation to his "Boutique" shtick... The games technical aspect gives it a lot of breathing space that, after you get your head around it, SHOULD give people the options of getting all of the material, as an ongoing product line.
In case people don't know it, you are going to die ALOT, and the settlements do not honestly last long enough to go into the high number of years...
I do not think people realize how honestly brutal this game really plays. A word of warning for you just starting- don't fall in love with your settlers, they do not last. These monsters, and the gameplay after effects have more influence then people are getting after the high of the drug of a KS completion. Even a Lion can make short work of a team, let alone something as docile as a Butcher. 3 levels of each monster.... Ask the question of how evil are we talking about some of these 3rd level new inclusions... I don't believe that some of these higher level armor sets that we already have on deck will save your settlers.
I like the game, but be warned, you can easily start having buyers remorse after a few of your settlements go to !@#$. And that is only with the base boxed set.
Well, I think most people *do* know this, and that's why you'll often read things like "don't get too attached to your survivors"!
It *is* all about the settlement.
Also, who knows what the 1.5 changes will bring?
As well as the 'advanced' rules?
But yes, at the end of the day, he's clearly influenced by Dark Souls, Monster Hunter and other "Hopeless" Man v Monster things - things are gonna be grim!

It's too bad he couldn't give us the option of receiving the miniatures by themselves, then. I'm sure somebody would have figured out a workable solution.
I would have preferred a miniatures-only option myself, but it would get complicated.
Some people are into the game as well and the Lantern Festival was a promise of game rules. Do you refund only people that elect to get a refund?
Once some people get their minis and the Lantern Festival actually comes out 25yr from now, what happens then? Do you have the people that have the minis purchase the minis+rules anew? Do you have two separate products with one for people that want just the rules?
What happens when/if the Lantern Festival does come out and has different monsters in it? There are only so much thematic ties that you can build between an aristocratic lady in fine clothes with a pistol, a giant naked dude on a throne, and an ooze-like amalgamation of babies. What happens when Poots decides to remove the Hunter minis and instead add something else. Then we have people that have the minis, but the wrong minis.
Cancelling it altogether was probably the best choice logistically. I personally wanted it for the minis, but rules/lore would have been cool too. I would have loved to learn how the lady with the pistol has a pistol and the city she's from. I want guns that fire more than once (I'm looking at you, Manhunter).
I am really curious how they are going to manage to add in a future Lantern festival, if they do at all. They may just add the King, similar to what they are planning with the Ivory dragon, but I think that may be a bit of a let down since the King seems so much more badass.

If anything was to get cancelled at this point, I would suspect it would be the Ivory Dragon. The Abyssal Woods expansion at the very least seems to be an entire campgein built around it, with the the option of just adding the Goblin King as a Node 3/5 monster. I think that will work fine. The Ivory Dragon I think would have the most issues, just due to it being a small concept at this point, which feels rather thrown together to me. We will see!
Kingdom Death; Monster 1.5 Kickstarter is now over! After one day of rest it's time to share the BIGGEST (by far) monster I've ever made!
This is the Goblin King, a creature so big and detailed (and so strange) that I spent 5 intense months of work doing it two years ago! It was really insane! I've tried to do my best one this one and Adam Poots have been really patient because it was long and hard but I hope it's worth it.
But only you will judge the monster. I've lost my mind doing it!
When I said it's big, well, it's like a small cat! 230mm tall, 250mm long!
All done with Fimo, Magic sculpt, Epoxy putty.

Hi all I had a quick question I'm new to all this KS business but I've wanted Kingdom death for a while now. I ended up backing the Lantern pledge at $250 for the 1.5 core game.
I just wanted to double check because people here seem to be spending a lot more money than I am, this will get me at some point the original boxed game right? None of the expansions and stuff I know that but just the box standard one that I can play a game with?
I wanted to maybe add an expansion or two at some point but didn't realize you were supposed to do that before the KS ended, ah well apparently they're up for retail at some point in the far future I can just wait.

It is very likely that you will have a chance to add stuff when the Pledge manager opens up, for people to allocate what they want. I wouldn't worry about it too much!
If you are deciding what Expansion to add, from the Old ones I would look at the Gorm and Dragon King.
If i can I'm adding the Dragon King for sure, mainly because that model is awesome, but yes I've heard good things about the Gorm one. Too many things to buy with too little money!
Alpharius wrote: Why does the Gorm Expansion seemingly get so much love?

Does it offer good gamplay differences then?
It's the only expansion monster you can hunt from the beginning of the game, so gives a much-needed break from endless White Lions, and the gear is apparently very good.
Strangely I have 3 pending transactions from KS on my CC; two for some seemingly random (but identical) amount and a third a day later for the actual pledge amount. While I'm sure at some point the correct one will be applied and the other two dismissed, it makes me wonder if a similar pattern happened to others and if that's why some CC's are flagging it.

This, and it adds some great stuff to the settlements as well.
Well, in my attempt to keep the price hidden I just told my wife i backed the game.
Then showed her the kickstarter page (which obviously has the price on it).
TR: How does it feel to have the fourth highest funded Kickstarter ever?
AP: Surreal. I certainly need some downtime to prepare for the huge amount of exciting work we have ahead of us!
TR: The King, Scribe and other parts of the cancelled Lantern Festival didn’t make an appearance. Are there plans to add them to the game at a later date?
AP: No comment.
TR: The much requested Ringtail Fox didn’t make an appearance this campaign, and from the sounds of it, it will have as much content as the core game itself. Will we see anything Ringtail Fox related before this KS is finished, or will people have to wait until 2020?
AP: I am not sure at this point. My priority is now focused on the new round of promises we made this campaign. There are miniatures to make, manufacturing deals to finalize, tons of content to design, an onslaught of emails to answer. Ringtail Fox is going to have to wait.
TR: Can you elaborate on the core/upgrade pack delay just a bit?
AP: Oh yeah. That one is pretty simple. Before the campaign launched I got the long-winded manufacturing process on 10,000 core games and 5,000 upgrade packs. It looks like we now need 25,000 core games tho! So yeah, the physical delay of making more things!
TR: Any other comments?
AP: THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!!! I WANT TO HIDE FROM THE WORLD BUT I PROMISE I WONT! LOL

Officially, no. Poots mentioned that he tried to sell rules-only versions of the game at a convention, but people bought the model versions of the game anyways. There was too little interest in a rules only version and the plan was abandoned.
Loopstah wrote: I doubt poots will want the cost involved in resculpting and retooling for a new spidicules. Personally I don't think it is that bad.
You mean a model so impractical, and mis-sized (from a gameplay point of view) that it has to come with a token indicating where it "actually" is, in game? :-p
I'm excited for KD, and have liked what I have played of it very much, but more than nearly any board-game I have ever owned, it is one where you tangibly feel how irrelevant the models are. There is no notion of LoS to them, elevation, etc... and mechanically it could be just the same game with chits.
Which is not to say the minis aren't gorgeous and worth having... but its a weird disconnect between the two halves of the game.
You need them for Space Hulk because they differentiate what is seen and "real" from the phantom echoes represented by the chits. Flipping over one mystery chit and then replacing it with another, slightly different chit, takes the visceral out of the game the way genestealers take the viscera out of the terminators. Might as well play set up, stare at, and then sadly repack a Fantasy Flight game.
Besides, it's really nice for some of us that the rules and miniatures can go to separate homes.

Sure, but it would function with just tokens - it's not like there is line of sight or something similar which actually relies on the miniatures being there
There is some terrain where it matters with the Stone Face, but there's not tons of situations where it does.
As someone already said, no miniature is really required to play a game and only if one introduces TLoS does it need to be anything more than a chit. Most mass-market board games still do this for a reason because the game is the focus and not the pieces. Really, you could replace all of the Space Marines in a game of 40k/Space Hulk with fun-size candy bars and it'd work much the same as 40k ever does (plus you get to eat your casualties).
Where Spidicules is particularly jarring though is that he is SO much bigger than the area he's supposedly occupying that it interferes with playing the game and can easily knock other things on the table. It's a great display piece, but not really a practical addition to the game. Of course, "Kingdom Death" and "practical" are clearly barely on speaking terms so that's not *actually* surprising.
In most (if not all) boardgames and wargames the models are irrelevant and can be substituted by a flat chit or a volumetric thing, a cube or a cylinder and gameplay will not be impacted at all.
For example in the spacehulk mentioned green round chit for blip as is purple for actual stealers, red with arrow for forward facing and weapon loadout for marines, rectangular
chit for door done.
We use models because we like the 3D representation of game tokens that is all.
Spidicules is a problematic model, I do not see how it can be resculpted since the whole idea is the ball body with arms and legs extending far away from it and the investment has been already done so it makes little sense to spend resources at this time to redo the model, especially if the concept of the model needs to change for a resculpt to happen.
Vorian wrote: Surely it's the same for any board game.
Do you really need the miniatures for space hulk or imperial assault for example? It just adds top the experience
But as I said... the Spidicules actively has to come with cardboard chits, because the model doesn't even remotely resemble the footprint it takes up on the board. So... you don't actually use the model... you just have it.
Most games don't technically need real models (GW's about the only that doesn't have approximated volumes, which generally creates clunky mechanics), I think that argument isn't going anywhere.
However, the spidicules is just really awkward. They shouldn't have made the space you're supposed to stand for a buff the most inaccessible part of the battlefield at all times. I think it's a really neat model, but should have kept a regular blind spot (behind) and either not allowed models directly under it, or penalized them so you're not often there.

At least in regards to 'terrain', ranged attacks, etc?
the only elevation I recall in the game are the giant stone head terrain markers which give plus to ranged attacks. That's it.
LOS issues tend to be more common with nemesis encounters having some pillars, but from a practical standpoint, they almost never matter. The butcher teleports, the hand asks you to dance, the lion knight asks you for theatrics, etc.
A lot of you are talking about the mechanics of the game, as opposed to the experience of the game. Mechanically, there doesn't exist a game anywhere that won't function with a properly marked chit in place of a miniature. Mechanically, chits won, and turned the miniatures world into their ash tray. As an experience, gaming depends on a lot more than the mechanics or we'd all be playing some computer algorithm game.
I would imagine most of the flavor of Kingdom Death comes from the miniatures, which deliver tangible touchstones of body horror that provide more imagination fuel than any chit ever could. Playing KD with chits would be like having sex with an auto assembly robot with a picture of Tracy Lords taped to it as opposed to the full, rich experience you could have at the, er hands, of a deluxe Japanese sexbot. Neither is real, but one of them seems a lot more real.
Disclaimer: having never played KDM myself nor ever having sex with a robot, my post is mostly conjecture.
When I backed the first kickstarter I miss read his name and just started calling him that. Then after I got it I relooked at his spelling and went, oh, I guess I'm wrong. Now I guess I was right all along =).

Like I said, as was agreed upon by most KD supporters... you really need to see this mess on a table to understand why this model DETRACTS from the experience, no matter how luxurious and crazy it is. :-p Nothing else in KD has this issue mind you.
I don't think I was disagreeing with you in particular?
Spidicules detracts from my enjoyment of Kingdom Death because I think the mini looks goofy. Same with the Gorm and Sunstalker (infant?).
I just want to nip the whole "chits are fine" line in the bud. Ideally, there's a cheap yet creepy Bones mini that would fit on the board in place of the Spidicules mini.

Can you link to the bones mini please? I have never fought the Spider but it makes sense reading what people are saying about it.
I do not think Gorm and sunstalker detracts from the game, I kinda hate the Gorm model but looks like an infant and plays like an infant its quite disturbing as it should be, Sunstalker Infant is another disturbing sculpt a shark with a human mouth with limbs without inner bones, but I have yet to play the campaign to form what aspect it tries to explore.
Anyone else having problems with paying for this? I've contacted ks but they haven't got back to me yet, getting pretty stressed as the deadline for sorting it is tomorrow.

The Gorm idea is poorly executed from a miniature stand point, IMHO.
It does look like a baby(as it should), but the sculpt over all is weak.

Have you checked with your bank that they haven't blocked it?

If you've been contacted by KS and told your payment has failed you need to chase your bank/cc provider as they'll be the one blocking it (eg because you don't have enough money in the account, or because they think it's a fraudulent payment)
give them a ring and they should be able to unblock the card while you wait, you can then resubmit the KS payment (there's usually a banner across the top of the ks page with a link to do so)
if it still won't work you could try another card too via the same link
(if you've just not heard anything yet, and KS is not flagging up a problem they may just not have tried to collect anything yet, I think they're still chugging along for some people)

My Bank are saying it's KS and that KS need to provide some info to sort it ( I've had emails from them saying they'll cancel my pledge if it's not sorted by exactly 7 days after completion of the campaign, so I have about 24 hours to sort it).
So what I need is either someone from KS or KD to actually talk to me or I'm looking to be pretty stuffed.

You need to call Kickstarter support a sap or you are sol
1. you must pick up the base pledge to buy add ons in CMON KS
Edit
2. The mini will be made by the Kingdom Death then the master passed to CMON for production in their plastic and come preassembled (and may be a bit small compared to 'real' KD minis based on the size of other CMON boardgame humans although i'm now less certain about this since Adam at KD is handling the sculpting, but i'd say it's certainly a possibility)
Our Amor Kit Painting contest was amazing, we had a HUGE turnout! It was inspirational to see so many new hobbyists jump into the action! There are a few submissions that we could not approve due to blurry photos and such, I will reach out to those people so they have the chance to resubmit and be added to our gallery.
We will announce the winners in due time. Now it's time for JUDGEMENT! BWA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
I am publishing them as of right now! There are over 100 entries and I need to set the thumbnail and name for each, so give it a few hours before everything is fully published!
KD:M Kickstarter News
KD:M 1.5 Pledge Manager - Estimated Feb 14!
We are aiming to launch the pledge manager on feburary 14th 2017, aka Valentines day! I can confirm that we will be using backerkit and that there is sooo much we need to ensure works properly. Lot's of work! We are trying to build in as many accommodations as we can for the various requests we've received in the past few weeks. Please allow us the time to get everything prepared and the understanding that we must remain tight-lipped about its details until it is launched.

Spoiler:
Update Frequency & Expectation Management
Please do not or scheduled updates from myself or the KD:M team. I like to write the updates myself, as I can share my unique perceptive with everyone and it feels good to communicate directly. However, since there is just SO MUCH going on everyday, it's not something I feel comfortable making a scheduled thing. I need to be excited to share and ready to talk about the status of the project or any small part of the project. There is a shocking amount to consider each time I write an update.
My plan is to continue doing the best I can and reaching out to you amazing people whenever we really have something to communicate or show. Otherwise, my attention is day by day focused on the myriad of tasks at hand.
First one up. Getting all those last minute typo's and adjustments into the 1.5 Core Game, which I need to 100% sign off on by Feb 8th. Gonna be some loooong hours in the fistful of days! If we make it in time, it gives us our BEST chance of having it within our original estimate. However, I would expect that 3 month rolling delay I mentioned during the campaign. Manufacturing requires a lot of attention and I can't in good faith approve of something subpar just to make a deadline.
Any requests for what we wanna see / talk about next time!?!!!!!!!!

I don't suppose there's anyone pledging that would be willing to be a middleman for some Steampunk Twilight Knights for those of us who don't want the game?
Edit: NM. I found someone on the KD Facebook group.
