I know that kind of pain.
BUT! (Yes a big but), I have worked on the little guy some more, the armor plates for the upper/sloped deck. all those angled cuts!

After some trimming and such, anti-skid for footing plates added

With the turret on to show size compared to a Chimera so one can truly gauge it's size. Hatch panels for stowage have been added to the tank.

Afterwards, I added more details, tow cables, a cover rolled up, hinge rods, and other adornments fit for a tank.

I say go for it the next project you do for a light tank.
Camkierhi wrote:Looking brilliant, great little tankette.
Wait till you see the write up, more a light tank than tankette, 3 man crew at 22tons. I dub her the T-43a.
Stormwall wrote:That little tank has sold me on Zinge and boosted my confidence on a project I abandoned.
I love it, you better paint it soon!
You just have to wait a coup0le of weeks for the stuff to get there as Royal post is slow, but once it hits and clears US soil, BAM! it gets there. And the quality is good, very good, Treads/top hatch, and an engine vent are all Zinge made. I have to add my signature rivets before painting it!
now for pics with the light tank and soldiers supported by it
That is a neat little tank. Get it a bit smaller and with more 'attitude' and you'd be in Bonaparte territory
Your scheme makes me like those Eisenkern guys more than I usually do, good work!
I dunno how I've been missing this blog, going to have to keep up with it. Yeah, then I go back a page and see camo-ed gundam sized mecha and super mutants. *on the same page*. Where have I been all this time!

I am a collector of an eclectic army is all.
speaking of collecting, I have more Nuclear sandlot goodies plus a Commissar "Not" Cain on the way in the mail, pics of them will follow once I get them of course. a couple of flying bots, one bulky tracked bot, a large fast creature that is the stuff of nightmares, and enough new Super mutants to make a squad of greenish Ogryn stand ins or just well armed big meanies out in the wastes!
Thanks, my scheme got adopted from other sources, and Cam did so on his scratch built Landraider!
Oh this little tank has attitude, and has received it's dose of my PVA rivets. Next will be the black primer.
Nice job on the rivets. That tank looks more believable than most GW stuff but, it fits into the theme just right. Between you and Gits, I am now really torn towards little tanks.
I am working on a MK1 LR, I don't know if I want it full sized as it used to be or tiny like that now.
If you don't mind me asking, how do you make your rivets so uniform? I always seem to glue them to myself, there has to be a secret to making and placing them without fething it up.
Camkierhi wrote:Looking absolutely brilliant, 100% real. You look at it and it just looks spot on mate. Great job.
Thanks Cam! I always am encouraged by your posts of enjoyment of my model making and painting, and with time we all get even better at it.
My next embellishments on the tank will really make it more so as I am adding something for the inner drive gears so to speak.
I'm gonna need to order more bitz and plastic very soon for the other scratch building projects I have!

Hey there! LR for Land raider? or LR for Leman Russ? I will have to watch that project then unfold!
Ah well the fluff for my tank I am working on the T-43a is a 22ton, 3-man tank. The basic Leman Russ info from the 3rd ed book listed it at 60tons!
I do not mind at all, I even listed it, I use a canula attached to an old GW glue bottle, the white bottle from year ago, but any can do as long as the zap-a-gap canula fits over the tip. It is kind of like decorating little chocolates or baked goods when I do this. Patience and a steady hand and eye are needed, I have a little shake in my hands, and wear glasses, but I manage, LOL! As can bee seen, sometimes the control is a little off as seen in the slight size and shape variances, I sometimes scratch those off again and try all over with the "decoration placer"
Oops. New to the thread, that's why I missed it. Loved this tank over at Zinge's thread though.
I am wanting to make a Land Raider. I have no use for one actually since I don't care for Termies and the point cost is too high for me, imo. I was going to make it a Spartan but, I used the Spartan prow bits on terrain and though I was gonna restore it so I could use it for the tank, I decided I liked the normal one better. Then I realized I can do a custom front on it which got me excited about it. Then I chased all these tiny tanks around the plogs (started at the Zinge thread,) and since I have no use for a normal sized LR, and I have a Stormraven in the works I figured I would make a recon one. (Stole someones suggestion from this thread.)
So I basically tempted to make a smaller version of one that can be a counts-as tfc or vindicator. Something that can totally hang from a dropship or stationed on a Landship.
Glorious mate! Really awesome... kind of remimds me of the small French FT-17 tanls from WW1! Can imajine it buzzing around the battlefield. always impressive work!

Oh no worries at all, it is a big thread.
Sounds like a great idea, a scout raider! you ought to do that, just the crew, no transport capacity, weapons, and then just for the job of recon and harass the enemy!
MagosBiff90 wrote:Glorious mate! Really awesome... kind of remimds me of the small French FT-17 tanls from WW1! Can imajine it buzzing around the battlefield. always impressive work!
Thanks Biff, I actually took some inspiration from a old Soviet amphib light tank. I also plan upon making a 4x4 and 6x6 armored support vehicles for support. I have bitz on order, and plastic for fresh armor plates as I have run dry, and used the plastic sheets from the place Dave and Theo use for the sheets(Plenty of plastic crack on the way now!)
Now do I go like this?
or like? a more classical layout of wheels?
I was thinking a modernized Ba-10 like 6x6 armored car.
The first wheel setup is cooler, would be nice and keep a smaller profile.
Yeah! I was thinking it would be small enough for a crew of four, a pilot, Gunner, and two brothers that act as extra crew, manning the radio and getting out to perform minor repairs/guard it.
I am thinking it will only have two heavy bolters and the tiny frontal cannon that is hidden in a groove in the front, beside of an armored front canopy, and a small area on the outside box shaped rail to store bolters and the other one to hold chains and parts. Then tons of rivets. It will be my first time riveting. I feel like I will love it since I like making them. (And hate.) So today my girlfriend helped me shrink the plasticard templates from 100% to 35% of normal size I am going to the library to test print them.
I have some questions for you now if you would humor me?What is that golden grating material? It looks fabulous, and are those chain bits just the ones from a Rhino kit?
GrimDork wrote:I found that a year or two ago. Yeah jaw dropped and I was /jealous It's really, really cool!

4 man recon tank sounds good, Heavy Bolters would allow it to handle armor 10 vehicles and infantry, but vulnerable to dreadnoughts. Maybe sponsons with single las cannons left over from devastator kits? or even Multi-Meltas, would at least allow it to handle unexpected heavy armored enemies. Hmmm, reduced scale templates sounds good
Another Dakkanaught helped me when I was strapped and sent me the bras screen that you mentioned, and the tow cables are GW ones I simply applied a bic lighter to to get the plastic to soften and bent them to the shape of the tank armor. The basic GWIG Tank accessories kit is where the cables and their loops came from.
I rather like the sense of community that we have here at Dakka
I had a long reply but, Dakka signed me out. Typing it on my phone now so forgive the typos.
Basically, these little tanks are taking over a few plogs Grim. (Littletower, Shas, Gits, and others.) Which means you must join us... if you say A, you must do B.
I wonder. If a tank goes pewpew do little tanks just go pew?
Anyways. I hope you don't mind the light guard idea stolen for my spotlights, do you? I thought that was a nice touch. Now I get what you mean about the cables. That is why I didn't reconize them. Learning a lot from this because this is my first time with plasticard.
As for our community, it is crazy. I have lots of lurkers on my plog as I haven't painted a thing yet but, there are a few like Gits who regularly help out and watch eagerly which keeps me going. And all the blogs I visit are helpful. I always get nervous I will come across as a kiss arse or overly aggressive due to my writing style (I have been told it is too stern,) and that one of these days someone will call me out on it even though I don't want to come across as either of those things. But, asking questions shows interest and helps me learn so surprisingly most people are not irritated and genuinely help me. It saves me frustration (and my wallet,) from mistakes. This is why I think Dakka is amazing.

as for the wheeled tank setup... I think for your army a BMP would be perfect... the more futuristic one I think isn´t really my thing, when I think about your army...

Had to do the rivet thing with it , LOL!
The armored car will be a 6x6 wheeled BTR or such, even spaced wheels, but not like the Secret Weapon armored car as for one, I plan on a conical turret for the things as I am expecting some weapon bitz for Multi-Meltas and Heavy Bolters/flamers Saturday.

I however want to make this 1st BV monster the traditional Death Claw, I may buy another in the future and make it the bird beaked thing, unledd I use the head for a sculpt project.

Scratchers will get the basic browns of a Death claw, but as he is special, I will likely add some two tone markings, and likely as a homage to the idea that they are raccoons, a ringed tail.

Thanks Doc! I also gave him a chunk of truck tire for his right shoulder, I need to GS sculpt more often to get the easae of adding bits to models, and one day making my own sculpted mini!
With a bit of practice, putty sculpting for this kind of thing is pretty "easy" (for lack of a better word) until you get to the head and hands, I find those the most difficult.
The tankette is great, really like that a lot. Completely missed all the development work on it, but don't think I had anything to contribute anyway Good job there indeed!
Latest supply drop from Vinni looks good, just received that robo-brain myself, along with the female 'inquisitor' and some female troops. Obviously my robo-brain will be getting split into a variety of different models, so it's always good to see one getting put together 'properly'
Nice to see you doing a bit more sculpting too, nice work there I'll echo the doc and recommend clay/colour shapers too

I used a round pour mold piece shaved down for the rob o-brain's "Neck" to add some height to it.
Now the little tank and the 2 huge troop carriers are ready for camo.
Now Zinge is another sources for mini goodness for me, and speaking of Zinge, I have received today the latest Zinge-drop!
Jerry Cans of varied sizes

Hub-caps for my new tires

Hand-holds

Zingelin mIlitary grade tires

\Now to show why I should have paid more attention to the tires I had, and the ones I was ordering! 8 x new Zingelins, and 4 x of the older non branded tires, I should have checked the sizes, so it looks like an 8 x 8 and a 4 x 4 will happen, so the 8x8 will be inspired by the old BTR-60 through 80 of the Cold War era, and the 4 x 4 more like a BRDM I may even make mid hull rollers for it as well.

Also, the Beast Squad is looking green and mean

Hey LDD! I saw the latest thing, checked on affordability, and ordered from Brother Vinni and Zinge Oh and plastic, 9lbs of it!
I used the smaller sized handles, smallest and 2nd smallest. I do need to work putty at the base of the turrets to fill some holes that shaving caused, and the warping from the plastic cement effect.
I will likely mount Heavy-Bolters to the glacis plates of the new cars.
Anywhoo, I must show the scale of the 4 x 4 I am currently working on, it will be a decent sized machine once done.
Made enclosed wheel wells now

Yes once I get some cash together I will be investing in a few of both suppliers or should that be dealers
The body is coming together nicely and the wheel arches look nice and symmetrical, just one thing I have found when using plasticard especially on the larger base section it can bow a tad, so you might want to add some kind of plastic slats to the bottom to give a bit of resistance.

I am actually thinking with the size, make it an amphibious and squad carrying machine. Lower hull that you all see is based somewhat off the old Soviet BRDM-2 for the shape and configuration.
Of course it is already deviated from that design, and I will make the upper structure a bit different as it will also have a Heavy Bolter in the upper bow.
Here is the present lower hull

Oh I do random selecting, so as soon as one ends, I pick another favorite.
Looking good there! IMHO and I am not sure if this has been mentioned previously or not... but it looks like it would lend itself to being an amphibious vehicle of some kind... I only say it because again IMHO I think the wheels may look slightly too small for it to be a vehicle that would solely operate on land..... The overall form with the turret is looking good though! I am prepping to make 4 smaller retractable wheels tucked in between the large road wheels, as the BRDM-2 has, and the rear ramp will have 2 vent covers for the aqua jets to pus it through water as I planned from the start to make it have the amphibious ability! Roads, cross country and over water the BRDM-200 can deliver troops anywhere!
I like the idea of retractable wheels and aqua-jets to turn it amphibious...hover-jets would be even cooler, but not quite right for your fluff I know.
Your getting there and adding the retractable wheels and jets should pull it all together perfectly, I do think it might benefit from slightly larger wheels but will hold on that till the rest is dome.
Either way you have captured the essence of the BRDM spot on

Yeah hover craft/skimmers are not liked by Khadrovians who like to stay solid on the ground when not in actual aircraft
Thanks Monkey!

Oh I think you will like project next after the BRDM, BTR-60 at Vik's request, and the tires will be about right sized for it, made by Zingelin!
Well, LDD with the number of tires I have left, a BTR-60 homnage with the 2nd turret is planned, the 4 tires on the BRDM were of a decent size, 23mm sized tires
the larger 26mm tires will be all 8 on the BTR variant I have planned.

Well, I must confess, I also video game and other things as I am disabled, so as there is no job to report to any-more, :( I must keep myself busy somehow!

I have to get to some serious paint work on about 100 Defiance UAMC troops waiting on paint before I paint the CDF guys, although, I may paint 2 squads of UAMC and one of the CDF as they both will have almost identical color schemes under the Uniform Directives of the K.U.U.R. Military service adjunct 2564/Z/B-39c
As they are elite, the CDF will also have the splinter camo as the Kruegerians and all other veteran units, the UAMC get the base green armor as so few see veteran status.

It is weird isn't it? I looked at the images of the BRDM-2 and whipped this up, imagine what I could do with a scrapyard?
Yes, my very first MR order, and now am also likely to flesh a whole platoon with command team and commandos from it all. Plus other units as he has enough I can make several other republics worth come to life.

Well, as it is a big one, about chimera sized, I did make it have a troop exit ramp with 2 water jet sliding close panels, whereas the real BRDM-2 does not carry troops normally, and has a large single water jet or propeller in the central spot where the ramp is.
I have several, inter-related conditions that make it impossible to stand behind a counter, Pain hits in 5mins, the heart and other conditions makes endurance based jobs not possible, and the bloodclot in the left arm makes me a candidate to drop over dead on a call center floor, so at age 50 with many more issues all lumped together(I am apparently favored a lot by Papa-Nurgle), no one wants to hire me once I ace the online stuff and they see me limping in on a cane, say they went with a "More qualified candidate" which is a code for "Healthier Candidate" for the position. In my state, the jobs are retail sales, maybe some few call center jobs, and coal mining.
Would be cool to see what MRM minis you picked up LDD
Well that's a gak deal you got there you could do with a job working from home by the sounds of it ....... mind you we could all do with one of those
As of the size did not realise it was that large I see your reasoning behind it though.
Well if I showed you what MRM minis I had it would basically be his current catalogue LOL
No literally one group of everything from Kurgans to Jovians and everything else in between, I am working on the bearskins at the moment well trying to figure out the layout at least.

Yeah, looked at work from home, or a start up, bad location out in the boonies, no phone lines up this hill, and I would be relying on shipping things too much on my roommate to drive me to a parcel shipping spot.
Well, seeing how well the CDF went, I can only figure the others also work out well. Sounds like you have soldiers to assemble!
As for the scale, I will show that soon, for now here is work done on the other details of the armored car 4 x 4 x 4(the 4 miniwheels have yet to be added. Mark-IV exhausts with Zinge air vents which of course are set t lock up in case of ABC hazards

Driver side hand-holds and hatch
[/img] [/img] Front view showing the forward hatches as well as where the driver windshield/armor plate goes
[/img]
Sealing under belly front skid plate as well as rear under works
[/img]
Now for a scale shot series with a Chimera for a sense of the size, also happens to be taller than the Chimera
[/img]
It is also longer than the Chimera, but thinner
[/img] [/img]
It's ramp is as big as the door on the ramp of the Chimera, all elements for a max of 10 men and no chance for Ogryns to transport, unless it is merely 3 Jovian-Hammer type Ogryns.
[/img] [/img]
It can almost hide the Chimera behind itself
[img]
At this placement and angle, the BRDM looks about equal in height to the Chimera
[/img]
But here, it reinforces it's height over the Chimera
[/img]
That's a neat vehicle sir. Looks squat and defensive, good and tough. Seems like a lot of scale tank kits are narrower and longer than the chimera so it seems like this new beast is in a good place.
GrimDork wrote: That's a neat vehicle sir. Looks squat and defensive, good and tough. Seems like a lot of scale tank kits are narrower and longer than the chimera so it seems like this new beast is in a good place.
Thank you!
The vehicle is a recon/patrol/mobile rifle unit transport. Heavy Bolter in the bow for what that can do, and the twin-linked Multi-melta for dealing blows to enemy armor or heavy troops.
GrimDork wrote: Oh yeah I just noticed the TLMM, should make it relatively versatile in the field, which it would need to be if it's advance scouting for the army.

Well, that too I always liked the idea of having small advance/scout parties fight it out in an attempt to win an advantage for their main force. I guess you could do that with kill team or something.
GrimDork wrote: Well, that too I always liked the idea of having small advance/scout parties fight it out in an attempt to win an advantage for their main force. I guess you could do that with kill team or something.
Well, Kill team normally does not allow vehicles, but other games for skirmishes I do have, and they are no problem with patrols with their vehicles duking it out!
Shas, theres a few deep scratch marks on the hull, are you going to sand them out or leave them? I ask because if you get some nice quality sand paper you should get them out in no time!
It is about the size I thought it was although never considered the length longer than a Chimera but only just, I like the addition of vents and exhausts enforcing the style and adding a bit of 40k necessity
Well that makes working from home awkward and limits your options, I was wondering if call centres offer opportunities of working from home like BT do here ?
That way all you we need is your internet access, phone line and a room to work from, is there nothing like that it would remove the need for ect phone lines or delivery traveling.
Yes need to build some troops, vehicles, monsters, dwarfs , gangers , traitor guard , ganger vehicles , mutants ..........
VERY ice job there sir! My thoughts regarding the wheels initially looking to small have been proven to be false... as, now with the superstructure added, I think they look great! I know its only a small detail but those really small handles on the top hatches are a great detail!!

ITs looking really good though I have to admit!
Having already rubbed and and scraped, I will only remove the glue prints, the gouges can be covered, or used for "damage" with a metal/rust combo on them!

I had to have those tiniest of handles on the crew hatches, it felt the right thing to add to the project. Hey the wheels are also not that small, 23mm ones from Zinge, I got the bigger ones that are bigger than the bases for the BTR-60 inspired 8 x 8 concept I have in my head.

A thought just struck me for the painting, While you like your tanks muddy, you could do this one with a high-water mark with most of the mud washed off below a certain level.
And you could do that by applying the mud as normal and then taking a clean, wet brush (before the paint dries) and "washing" it off. That would leave it in the naturally hard to reach areas and add realistic streaks etc...

Can the turret piece be placed on the left side too?
Looking at the other pics of it at their website, the turret is set to the left of the vehicle, but shows it is not able to be offset to the right side. The way they shaped the turret collar which uses the driver's cockpit to help anchor it to the vehicle.

It has just popped into my head where I thought I had seen that type of tank before.... it looks like a more beefed up version of the tank from "Indiana Jones and The Last crusade!" ... which is no bad thing as it is one of the first really cool tanks I remember seeing as a kid!

Actually, while they look similar, the "Last Crusade" tank was modeled off the Mk VIII which was a joint US/British heavy tank, with a more "modern" turret replacing the gun box (Think like a Malcador defender up top). I can however see that kind of vibe as one of my superheavy scratch builds also looked like that movie tank.
Well, I do need to order more weapons if I make more tanks,,,,Hmmm, Old Crow Missile pods and cannons still, plus some GW weapons laying about.
Anyway, the BRDM-2 inspired car and the BTR-60 inspired 8 wheeler are IPS plastic sheets, Galeforce9tubes and beams, Zinge for the tires and other accessories, GW weapons, and the exhausts of the BRDM-2 were Mk-IV exhausts.

The top piece, basically a flat plate with the cut-out for the doors/turret-mounting-plate and the 4 pices that go down and become the top parts of the track assembly. Nothing I plan to do soon, but something I'm not sure of my skills for.. let alone a whole vehicle

Well, it is a real challenge to try and make such a part like that.
The trick with any scratch-building, is to break down the shape you want into smaller, simpler shapes.
Also, assuming you have the rest of the tank, you don't have to build that top part in one piece. build it, bit by bit on to the rest of the tank. The top, flat piece (with holes in the correct places) can be added separately to the top pieces of the track-guards, and those separately from the front and rear, angled parts of the track-guards.
The raised areas on those sections can then be added afterwards.
Those are kind of the lines I was thinking on. In addition to using it as an opportunity to do odd/fun conversions like the limo-rhino, or extra wide rhino-raider. I'd probably have to come up with some tracks for it too, so I may as well go for broke. Thanks for the advice
@shaso--was time a factor? because you probably could have picked something like that up in a bitz auction...
i have bought dozens of things from bulletbits55 on ebay...would highly recommend them. but then, i was buying 12 things at a time, so the shipping worked out nicely, and i wasn't on any time constraint.

Hey Vik! good to see you back on!
Thanks, and yeah, I do like the designs of the Russians.
Pin in a hole is what I am using, the pin is long enough it goes through that box on top of the propeller, into the main hull of the tank, so it is held by the 2 walls and the cover sections themselves.
I was working from this image, I know the propeller I used is a bit bigger than image shows for scale, but it seems to work well for the game world, LOL!
Yes, Twinlinked Multi-melta is meant for opening bigger/meaner tanks, LOL
As for the paints, I have found them less wasteful, and easier with brush and palette than GW paint pots which one can go too far with the brush into, or hours of painting,,,,,drier paint I got my droppers from Reaper Minis in Texas.
ah... I see great reference that pic...didn´t knew propellers might be used in that size...
and yep... long sessions of painting or heck when using metal paints I can only strongly recommend the dropper bottles... whenever I used the flip open pots...well...I have ruined some mithril and gunmetal pots that way... and besides...the gold hues from GW are crappy...
and I see that the cover for that propeller is well built

Yes, and all the built up dry paints along the cap interfaces of the old pots and their latest, so wasteful! dropper bottles are the Best.
Had to do something to copy what I could from the project, the foot rails for climbing in will be bent paperclips
Foot rails, between the Tires, I will use zinge handrails for the hand grabs it needs, but some may also be paperclips bent to the right shape looking at the image
That is simply ace Shas. I was unsure if you were going to do the covering for the fan.

Don't worry its the same thing on this side of the pond, I was following the tracking on a parcel from the states it was telling me it was still on that side of the world yet got delivered here that afternoon
well, it has been that way since the 20th, so I demanded updates, that usually gets the USPS off their complacent backsides and start looking into it, I am figuring they have it in New York at their Customs processing center by now and are just being lazy in regards to entering the data.

Shas, what is the substance you use that is around your turrets and your rounder edges? Is it just bent plasticard? Does the card just take that shape after bending and vigorous sanding? I guess any tips on how you are putting these together would help with my own project.
I am genuinely kinda lost on how you're putting the curve pieces together/making the headlights have an actual round insert instead of just styrene tube.

Forgive me if this post is redundant.
Ah, very good questions!
I tend to make a base for the turrets, then I make angled sheet "ribs" that make a sectional like the way an orange is sectioned, them I use a thin plasticard cut in a semi-crescent so that when I force it to bend, it gets that shape that you see. Lot of glue as well. Then the sanding or file rubbing when dry.
Headlights are plastic tubes that are glued onto flat plasticard, I then cut the card they are glued to when dry, trim and file the plastic to a pattern shape. If needed, I also use paperclipped bent and glue into drilled holes for light protectors.
Super helpful stuff, really helped me tonight with the tank I pm'd you about. Thanks a million Shas. By the by, those treads are still insanely massive.
P.S I got you and another Dakkanaut something as a gift, I will PM it to you when it is ready.

Glad to have helped! The massive treads will go for the massive APC I am making, that now make 5 platoons I can move across a battlefield, Converted Alligator LVTP, 2 x Mk-IV's then the MTLRB-40 and now this new one! I will have the 3 hammers, the 6 Bricks, my 6 chimeras, the OLd Crow APCS, the BTR-80 x 2, the glave x 2, the Lancers x 2 the 2 halftracks and I do plan on Hanomags from Dreamforge.
Oh and my scratchbuilt BRDM-2 and BTR_60 also .
A gift? you shouldn't have! Well, maybe, I do hit 51 on the 9th

Yes, me too. I thought it was amazing btw. However, I can't wait to see what those treads go to.

Well MB, then that BTR would be riding so very high! Of course it would be an interesting mix-match idea.
Thanks, the new machine will have 2 ramps in the back for the men so get in/out of this monster I am building!
And thanks again, it will be interesting as I will have some nice new things to work on again as well!
Stormwall wrote:

Well, I do have progress pics to add Stormwall, and now you guys will get to see what direction it is going in!
for an idea, I placed the belly plate with the back and mid walls on the treads, kep in mind the Zinge Track shoes are the same width as the IG chimera/Leman Russ treacks.
[/img]
Then I added some strength to the model
[/img]
The walls
[/img] [/img] [/img] [/img]
Then I placed them back with the treads
[/img] [/img]
Speaking of....they are now sealed up and waiting detail plating to be added
[/img] [/img]
And for a true idea of scale, Agent G went and posed with it all again
[/img] [/img]
I have looked at the front plat and may replace it with one styled more like the IS-3 tank with some rectangular then triangle shape cut to make it a bit bigger and more secur5e looking, right now it is a tad too smallish. So look at the lower glacis plate of the IS-3 and that shape is the one I will be replacing the front lower glacis with
I am going to see how well the weapons slot in and out of the turret, paint all to be ready for swap outs, but my usual camo paint job, and also dirty tires, belly plate and such, as off roaders do get dirty. I think it will be the main ride for my "Rescue Team" as it looks about right for a machine similar to a Razorback in capacity(6 man fire team), wit the weapon load our set for different missions, so if the enemy has tanks, I will use one of the weapons that can hurt tanks, just enemy infantry or walkers? they have answers for that too!
Okay, some more work got done on my new project of the scratch built heavy APC. Working on the hull, then the turret, then the detail work can be added to the outer track systems, the hull and turret as well. Forwards flat area is where the driver hatch and vision units will be located.
[/img] [/img] [/img] [/img] [/img]
with more armor added

Oh and the Warchimera shipment arrived as well today! I have to say there were some surprises as to how the resin work is made, I expected solid tire halves I would have to file or sane, but they are hollow, and with line up parts! There is some flash material to clear away, but most experienced modelers know how to deal with flash anyway so that is no big deal!
[/img]
the parts clink like hard plastics, so I will be careful as I have yet to see if the material is the older style brittle resin of military kits of the past, that resin had minimal give, so a simple 25% or 30% bent can snap such material.
More to follow once I get to start working on the 3 Hammer APCs
Automatically Appended Next Post: Okay, an honest appraisal, and some recommendation for Warchimera to try for future workings of their APC, forget 2 part tires, just make a decent solid one as Zinge makes, the parts are having some issues and this kit as is presented is NOT for beginning modelers at all. the tirs as will be seen have a hugely thick chunk of mold fill that when removed damages the tires somewhat using a clipper, or requires a saw for a different way to get the thick chunk off, and I have detected some mold difficulties even with the tires as is, and more trimming of the crescent shaped guides is also needed, making the tires a project in and of themselves, these will be much fixing and gray stuff work to fix.
The mold flash I mentioned, thick and not easy for some to deal with, so like I said, maybe switch to a more solid and quality checked tire? I also noted the lug nut spaces tend to not have had a consistent molding, so holes exist, again a thing that more solid made one piece tires would fix
[/img] [/img] Otherwise, the tires do hold good details, details I have to do some work around when it is not right set, so I do have to give an honest appraisal, the tires get a 5/10 due to mold issues, casting issues, and the modelling difficulty level involved. so experienced model builders will find this less a hurdle than newer, less skilled modelers.
Once freed from the flash, I saw it was clean up time, and spotted the mold defects in the tires. Now do not judge the model based on my appraisal of the tires alone, they are good bits of the model, just that a solid make might limit the off casting. But the work is needed to make these fit
[/img] [/img] [/img] [img]
As much as I do see myself ordering more in the future, I would recommend stocking up on Zinge's 25mm to larger tires to work with this model.
Now it is off to work on those tires some more as I did not stock up on Zinge tires, so I must work with cleaning and fitting and gray stuffing the tires I have with the kits. I do apologize if this was harsh for Warchimera, but an honest appraisal with recommendations was promised to them.
Geez, did you get three of those things? You're quite brave getting multiples on the first try. I was going to ask for some pics of those tires, but you beat me to it. You planning on assembling them all today?
Barzam wrote: Geez, did you get three of those things? You're quite brave getting multiples on the first try. I was going to ask for some pics of those tires, but you beat me to it. You planning on assembling them all today?
Oh no, not all 18 of the tires in one sitting! I am making one whole Hammer to review the ease or not of the kit for assembly and then paint-work would ensue later. I will make all three one at a time. But Dem tires!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Okay trick to the tires to get better lining up is to shave those crescents down flat as possible, arrange as best a fit as possible or if you have a sanding board area, sand them all flat as can and end the rough edges, I just have knives and files. (don't forget to wear a mask if sanding resin) [/img]
Automatically Appended Next Post: Now I have some more plastic crack as well to play with, so Hammer APC build-review, Valkir, Hammer 2, Valkir, Hammer 3 more Valkir! and then Keilerkopf!

Valkir Tacticals [/img]
Heavy Weapon Valkir [/img] [/img]
My command Valkir with pistols and big nasty swords! [/img] [/img]
Automatically Appended Next Post: Okay, I have to adjust my modelling approach as this first test APC is proving to me that while many companies have adopted a flexible resin for their kits, not all have. I would suggest to Warchimera to invest in a softer, less brittle resin as it will help more as the model is something that really is delicate while simply cutting the flash off of the parts, they also snap under normal snips and need repair. [/img]
Troop hatches [/img] [/img] [/img]
The mold allowed the holes for the tires to be filled in, the casting is still showing some needs for cleaning it up at manufacture, so as a beginning company, they are still apparently learning, there is plenty of clean up needed I made the 1st one of the Hammers as is, some putty on the tires, but other models will get some plastic help for the tires to have stronger supports.
Hull [/img] [/img]
with the upper hull added, every inch of the model needs cleaning, and a soft touch doing separation from sprue and flash lest the parts snap and crack as it is a thing they can change in the future to drop the brittle resin and go more flexible type resin. [/img] [/img] [/img] [/img]
[/img]
with the front on [/img]
Broken weapon mantlet [/img]
with the turret on, which had some accidents as well. [/img] [/img] [/img]
with Agent G for scale [/img]
I give Warchimera an A for effort as this would work out as a kit in the gray resin such as Puppet's War uses, or FW uses or other similar gray material. Not a bad design concept, just the medium they have at hand seems to be less worthy of their concept, and the tires need to be solid, less pieces for the cost, but if they go with better resin it will make it more worth it. They are decent enough that I do want to support more. I just recommend the kits as is for now as long as you have the tools and skills for an delicate and advanced work kit. Thes are my observation on the Hammer as a model kit. I hope the guys at Warchimera take what I have critiqued on the model as well as recommendations and take a new approach at it!
So far, no words about the review of the Hammer. I know it was no glowing report, but it was an honest one. I am hoping this will help make them with going in a strong direction, Meanwhile, here is a Hammer with a Chimera for they are serving the same role.
[/img] [/img] It's taller, a little longer, and at least as wide, so it serves a good stand in for any army as a chimera style transport. The price was about 80USD for all three of the Hammers I bought, plus their shipping included in that cost. Once done building all three, I will have increased my transport motor pool.
Now for something a bit different. I built some Valkirs. 1st up is the command squad. I used the smooth topped knightly heads for the regular officers, and the ridge topped one with the interesting visor as the overall Valkir captain/Canon, as I will likely try and use the old SoB codex I still have. Although they do have a strong Marine like vibe going on
[/img] [/img]
Then I made the heavy weapons team, these five guys are pure punishment for an opponent. One weapon of each type was in this kit, and what weapons they are! On the left we have the quad HMG's or paired twin linked Heavy stubbers for 40k, bad news for Nid and other horde players. to the far right is another anti-personnel/tank weapon, the mobile mortar which can stand in as a Missile Launcher, although it seems more howitzer than direct fire. Next to the quad is the equivalent to a Multi-melta, next to the mortar is the anti-tank cannon which is belt fed, and resembles a auto-cannon,,,,I just hear Pom-pom-pom with this guy! and the leader is wearing a knightly helmet with the HEL or Las-Cannon. the majority are more trooper like with the helmet and mask of the stormtroopers from the Eisenkern set.
[/img] [/img]
Speaking of Space Marines, I took captain to captain pics, even though the Valkir captain is on a lower base than the GW one, he stands tall, and when raised to the adjust height, he towers over the SM< and I think this is the thing GW should have done with SM kits and NOT make them as tall as IG troopers.
[/img] [/img]
SM Captain does not feel so big now if the Valkir captain is on the level flooring with him
[/img]
Cool, thanks for sharing. I don't really love the aesthetic of.. well any of the eisenkern stuff... but it's sold for a good value and I can certainly see other people liking it. I do *kind of* like the quadguns gun, he means business
Another reason they're taller than the space marine is that space marines love really wide stances for... reasons? Drives me crazy, who walks around like that.
The Hammer doesn't look like the sort of kit I can just slap together. It looks like there's a lot of gap filling on it.
I am the opposite of Grim. I love the Eisenkern designs! I so want to get some of those Assault ones to use as Weird War Teutonic Knights. I can't wait until they release the Shadowkesh and their Russians.

Well, true, not all like the looks of the Eisenkern, but they do cost me lower prices per soldier than most GW minis.
Yeah, they really were just looking I think to have their minis all fit in their cases, so all get to stop height at 28mm regardless of the idea that IG are normal humans and SM are giants at 7-8ft tall, more so in terminator suits. The Eisenkern Valkir are more to the SM ideal in height terms.
Barzam wrote:The Hammer doesn't look like the sort of kit I can just slap together. It looks like there's a lot of gap filling on it.

As I said in my review, the Hammer is really as is a major project and requires skills, work and time to make it look right. using the more speed like approach I showed a moderate to low skill modeller will be unhappy with it. The resin is delicate and brittle, which is less user friendly for a wider purchaser base and is likely to be appreciated by a narrow niche modeller base, Greg at Warchimera is hoping for more sales, but he is likely to get such by shifting from this cracker delicate resin, to a more durable rein, as well as ditching hollow multi-part tires for solid tires.
Yeah I am also wanting to see more from Dreamforge, their Russians will fit as my new uniform Khadrovian Central government uniforms
Whew. I get off the internet for a few days and your blog explodes.
Loving the look of the new captain to standard SM captain comparison. Sorry you had such bad luck with the resin, I was originally looking forward to seeing that assembled but, it appears to be a pain.

Got one assembled, and am doing some tricks on the 2nd Hammer, used some more saw and knife work but I still say the tires will be better as solid pieces.
I do have plastic tube for the wheels so they will be at least better set than the 1st one. Wenht a little faster with assembling the tires and I have the tubes glued in. Still need putty work on those ties.
[/img] [/img]
Now I see some of the clean up issues with the Hammer, it is part of a many project mold, so they are wasting with the heavy sprue and flash much resin in liquid form when they could in fact make the Hammer it's own, cleaned up and better filled technique mold, the kist has so much potential! It deserves a separate mold all it's own! Here we see 15mm scale Sherman track links with the Hammer back doors
[/img]
And a bulkhead light which shows alignmnet of sprue issues.
[/img]
I think Warchimnera is trying to do a lot of projects on simpler sprues, and in the end this bites them on the rump as it diminishes quality of the pours and the finished kits. they would have fewer issues with dedicated molds for each project as it seems they are sculpting/building parts, then making a poured alginate or latex mold, but it would be far better if they made one for the sherman bits, one for the hammer bits, etc.
Valkir captain is awesome! details are good, and the differences show what GW failed to do with SMimho.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Okay, I did manage to work and finish the 2nd Hammer APC and here are the pics to prove it all. I gave it a commander from FW kit I had laying around, and a HB and the cannon it comes with as one of the options.

So, took 2 bases and got both captains of Heay armor to pose at feet on as level a setting as possible. I still say Mark got the height of SM better than GW did!

Big difference between carapace suits and powered armor suits! they have more parts as they have the tab-bard front/back and side armor for hip protection. They make GW space Marines look kind of small.

i really like these valkirs, they have, with the knights heads a strong stargate vibe to them so i think these would also be great as some more modern looking thousand sons stand in...

they are also from a models kind of perspective a very good stand in for a grey knight chapter...

hey Vik, I was tying them into the other Eisenkern with the Sturmhelm, squad leaders get the knight helm as a sign of their achievement so to speak. My Command squad are all Knight Helms, and many are looking to use these minis as Grey Knight stand ins as they look so good!
I had them link my blog to their website. I have n idea if they have looked yet, or how well are not they may have taken my insights. I have one more Hammer to clean up and assemble. Then I can prime and paint them as a group.
i know that you already have a vast amount of the eisenkern troops on your shelf ...
well... i actuall think it might be worthwhile to send them the whole review as an email... that might draw their attention much stronger than your thread link... i doubt that someone in customer care would click a link......but i dunno how life is out there where FB is still used...^^

The Valkyir definitely have a more appealing (to me) space/future look, especially with the knight helmets.
I placed the shields on, they are optional. Just the big 2-hander swords. and some with pistol wielding on top of the honking huge swords, then there are the heavy weapons of doom, tacticals have two different rifles flamers and Grenade launchers Plenty of head choices.

Are there three or just two kinds? MM has 3 sets but one of them is a 20 man set. Do they come in: 5-man assault 5-man heavy 20-man normal?
Or is there no normal for them? You seem to have regular rifles that aren't super heavy or anything.
Oh answered my own question.. the 'Heavy Troopers' box is the standard, as they actually are heavy troopers, its not a heavy support box. That's the support box Sense has been made! I dunno these really aren't too bad, and only 2-3 bucks a pop at 3rd party etailers.
You may be swaying me on these Shas... Of course I still don't like most of the guns. I'm still thinking making a few Goa'uld inspired weapons and casting them could yield neat results

Yep 5-man close combat for command
5 man heavy support
20 man regulars. And a decent price per man as the heavy armored types are a model kit unto themselves, as were the storm troopers in their light carapace, but a better deal per man than the GW stormies,,,,er, storm sons?
You would also have to make the staff weapons conform to the arms they come with. Make for an interesting project. I just consider the rifles a different patter bolt-gun, same for the pistols.
Paint? I still have a Hammer, a Hanomag, and that scratch build to finish, then I can paint!

Okay, the Hanomag has gone smoothly so far, i then remembered that folks may want pics! well, it went so smooth that I got this much done and realized, I need to stop and commit to paint the interior, and the crew. Then I can glu the reactor, front to it
Interior, the pieces show are retractable map reading tables, or mission plotting bits, so if they bend their heads and shoulders, they can actually go over information, and there may even be communications devices hidden in at least one of the cubby-holes above.

Over all so far, the plastic is durable and thick, but the engineering is sound and as can be seen , if fits together very nicely! Interior working move, doors and hood moves, I must say that this model is very impressively done! Dwartists' blog already did a full step-by-step and he did great justice to the one he worked on, which also shows up on the sides of the box! Now or some sleep, and then to use a pale green, or off white for the interior?
Stormwall wrote: Oh man I'm in love. That screams for me to paint it in blue for an FMA reference.
Off white would be sweet for the interior.
Hmmm, but the blue looks almost police like, LOL. But yeah, I know, and that the state in FMA is pretty German seeming, or a hint at Valkyria Chronicles, But Gallia was in the spot Belgium sits on their altered world map.
I have almost half a dozens shades of off white, some are bone colors and leather colors. BUT it also means that a white primer would be more useful for the insides.

My safety edge showed up earlier than expected, It is British made Maun metal
[/img]
SWM 6x6 also showed up, it has some parts needing clean up, but far less than the Hammer APCs much better resin used.
[/img] [/img] [/img] [/img]
Solid well poured tires are better than brittle 2 part tires
[/img]
details are good and I thought this material was what Warchimera was offering based on the images they use to sell the Hammer.
[/img] [/img]
Plus a ton of metal weapons options
[/img]
I must say that Warchimera has some lessons to be learned regarding making minis for sale. Quality is key, dedicated molds, solid tires are better than the 2-part things they make for the Hammer. The Hammer has great potential, it just is not getting in my opinio0n the love it needs from the guys at Warchimera.
Bloody hell Shas did you rob a bank how much stuff that APC is dreadful mate I would have sent it back the amount of cleanup and poor casting is just poor
The rest is pretty nice especially the Dreamforge stuff I have a ton of stuff to be done from the Kickstarter, nice to see them together though
The SWM APC is a pretty nice model but getting stuff from them costs me a bomb due to custom charges so I avoid them now.
As for MRM I think I have pretty much everything he has released so far, just love the stuff and the Jovians are just so cool

Now for more stuff, the SWM 6x6 was so easy to clean and put together It happened fast! I am posing it with the Chimera and the Hammer. It i slowest slung of the three.
[/img] [/img] [/img]
Length and width are comparable
[/img] [/img] [/img] [/img]
How they compare in the rear door zones.
[/img] [/img] [/img]
Convoy style line, weapons chosen are the hull mounted HMG/HB Tuerret has the support howitzer aka Battle cannon with coaxial Hvy Stubber
[/img] [/img]
Now with Agent G and one of the Rescue team

Stormwall wrote: That is amazing. It looks a lot better there than on the website.
I'm glad you are pleased with it.
Yes, it is a pleasant model to clean and build, I did have to glue on some shims for the turret, but that is an easy thing.
Based on the differences in the kits I have made, I am tempted to do Marina jokes like on Top Gear where different objects are dropped on that car, but replace the Marina with the Hammer like
I still feel, they could do it better, and make a model that resembles more what the imagery promises compared to the saltine cracker like resin and multi-project mold, it needs a better resin and dedicated mold and solid tires.
This image is no longer used by them on their site, I just checked, they may have been made to make some changes as to what they show, just cleaned up and made models, some unpainted from the better resin version, plus one painted by someone [
But what I got is more along the lines of this shown on Akhibara Station
So the SWM kit is more like a McClaren in comparison. I used to get Old Crow, but Jez is very busy doing work for a studio making films. There some odd excess in the wheel wells of the 6x6, but a decent amount of glue and some holding in place (with an activator to get the glue to set fast(I licked the axle ends) it worked and set fast.
Plastic APC kits I am loving the Dreamforge Hanomag.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I have one more Hammer to make, it is a lot of clean up to deal with.

Now get them painted!
Painted you say? Priming has been done, so it starts! I will also need to order more Jovian Hammer bodies for the other two heads/arms the set came with. Mohawk head and the one who had his head repaired. But here is the gang all primered in white.

GrimDork wrote:The SWM 6x6 looks sleeker and more modern than the hammer or chimera too. I quite like it.
Oddly enough they fusioned a German WWII turret with more modern optics and sensors stretched it a bit, but the side hatches with the vision ports screams PzKpfW-III or IV to me.

GrimDork wrote: It's just something about the overall shape.
Low slung, set for all terrain as it shows a suspension system set for off road, that it also carries troops, the big beefy tires, and it looks faster then the other 2 designs
It is a nice vehicle design. I particularly like that it isn't covered in rivets. Sets it apart from many of the other 3rd party vehicle kits. I just wish it were cheaper. I'd like to get one, but for the same price, I could just buy a Valkyrie.

Yes, and it was easy to get done. Now I have to primer it, then paint it.
Speaking of paint, I managed to paint several units first up are the Post Apocalyptic searchers [/img] [/img]
Weytani Republic trooper squad 1 [/img] [/img]
Weytani Republic trooper squad 2 [/img] [/img]
Now for the rescue team and their big pals. [/img] [/img]
Hmmm, so the leader of the Rescue Team smokes cigars, and it seems 2 of the Big Guys are also smoking some, Bribed with food and cigars!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Trying out the 6x6, the Rescue team finds it a nice ride! [/img] [/img] [/img]
Stormwall wrote:Didn't notice the turret on the 6x6 before. That is wicked.
The Turret is set for dealing support to it's team I now have enough weapons left to feed other vehicles! I can order another 6x6 as I have the one hull heavy flamer
GrimDork wrote:Thats a lot of paint down, good man
I looked at what needed those shades of greens and went at it is all.
Barzam wrote:Lots of stuff with paint. Nice job!
I've gotta get some of those Brother Vinni wasteland survivors.
I kind of think the Arnold figure ought to have some massive Catachan arms though.
I figured Catachan arms were his more Conan Da Barbellian days, he actually trimmed his muscles down for Predator for more believeability. Consider this Arnold more the Governator sized arms.
I am looking at the Vin Diesel looking guy that Brother Vinni made. Maybe some more stuff as well, the lady troopers look good as well. Meanwhile, I have those troops to finish, the buff for the hanomag interior, and 30 Valkir to prime/paint.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Okay, I decided to apply the buff color to the Hanomag and interior parts.

Barzam wrote:Would those be the clothed or non clothed Brother Vinni lady troops?
Both, I see the one bunch as having come out of their barrack or tents while it was sleep time, so grabbed their rifles no matter what state of dress they were in. Full uniform shows they were set for action and on duty.
JoeRugby wrote:Looking good dude.
I was on the fence about getting that dreamforge APC but I think you've sold it to me!
Don't know if I should praise you or curse you
I am used to both in equal measure! Anyway get ready to heap more unto me as I have some more work done.
GrimDork wrote: Nice, getting that interior going huh. I dunno if I would field a fleet of those... but maybe one as a command car or ostentatious personal conveyance
I likely will get some more, I do also want to have the one with the rockets, and the cannons.
I do however keep playing the sound of X-hibit's voice in my head saying "On the next Pimp my Ride!"
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh yeah! Agent G also worked alongside the Hanomag. It makes him want one for his division!

Very beefy! it has weight as it has so much internal structure to it, and the parts also the 10mm and the 8mm screws it needs for moving wheels and the swiveling gun gantry! (The gun gantry uses the 8mm screw, the tires use the 10mm version).
Speaking of the gun gantry, Oh this would also do well with a pair of the Panzer killer cannon on it. [/img]
the hatches all work [/img] [/img]
It is articulated, the gun gantry, so full 360 degree coverage of the Hanomag, even with enemy troops attempting to assault it., This also means the LOS for it is insane! [/img] [/img] [/img] [/img] [/img]
it can even do AA duty w/o having to raise up. [/img]
Now, to show off how beefy it is, I posed it with the SWM 6x6 and a Chimera as these are familiar in size to many out there [/img] [/img] [/img]
definitely the stretched ride, makes the 6x6 look stubby, and the Chimera with the extending dozer blade still can't match it for length [/img] [/img] [/img] [/img] [/img]
Hanomag is wider than the 6x6 [/img]
as wide as the Chimera, not counting chimera stowage bins [/img]
Their different exit/entry points, the Hanomag has more in common with the chimera using a door in a ramp approach to the 6x6 using 2 doors/no ramp. [/img] [/img] [/img]
Good lord that thing is beefy, I no longer question it's price in comparison to the other well priced dream forge stuff. That's a beefy beefy sumbish... probably long as or longer than a land raider meep.

I love locking Tape measures, not only good for gaming, but letting measurements be taken! Here is a locked tape with the Hanomag so you can see it is just over 7 inches long!
[/img]
Damn.. I kind of want one now for my corporation boss and his entourage... not that I have that yet.. but I will..
The description of that thing says something about seated passengers, does it come with models that go in the seats or is the description just talking about the seating space itself?

I have built squads, so I felt that if I get open vehicles, like the Athenocenti jeeps and such, the sitting guys would work well for them. Each is a mini model alone.
[/img] [/img] [/img]
Ahh that's cool, rather than the sometimes forgeworld solution of having a resin seating bench with the models molded to it, you basically get a bunch of eisenkern drivers for 3rd party vehicles, how cool. Too bad I don't want them myself Still thinking about the tank/car thing someday.
