Welcome all to the 12th Unofficial Dakka Painting Challenge, the final round of this rotation of challenges. For those who have not followed any previous challenges, this is a friendly competition for painters of all skill levels and experience, and anyone on Dakka is welcome to join in.
The theme for this month's challenge is: Size Matters Not. You are free to interpret this however you like, but some suggestions include models in larger or smaller scales than you usually work with, physically large or small models or models with over/undersized gear, weaponry or surroundings. Bonus points will be given to anyone who manages to create a 1:1 scale Ant Man diorama!*
*Bonus points may not be given. The organisers of this competition cannot condone not taking Ant-man seriously, nor do they accept responsibility for any damage resulting from shouting 'hey, midget' at him. Always read the small print.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 5 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month Following the vote, points will be awarded for the following:
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st February and will end at midnight GMT on the 29th February. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Anwar moved through the press of bodies hurrying Shlepper along as best he could. Those mercenaries would be on him soon enough without his bot dragging him down too. Shlep seemed to be even more prickly and slow since taking that glancing shot in their first encounter with the hired muscle. He wondered who it could be after him. Although with the new serums he was carrying, fresh out of the labs, every faction in the galaxy would be wanting their filthy infidel hands on them...
@Winter: Not sure what you mean. It's always said the 19th February, never anything different. Are you suggesting that in a state addled by flu and tiredness I for some reason forgot to change it from the January OP I shamelessly copied? Because I can assure you, that would never happen! I'm far too diligent and not at all the kind of berk that would make that sort of mistake!

@Paradigm, I have no clue what you are talking about? I never made any suggestion or edit that would have been suggestive of an error.
It's just not in my nature to be so cruel and mean.

This has all gone a little 1984!
Oh, updated banner below, just hit the 'quote' view for this post to get the link, feel free to use it in your sigs, it would be much appreciated.
I'm in with this toy dino repaint, he's been fully primed since this photo but didn't want to do any more until the challenge started! Plus his base hasn't arrived yet.
I'm in, too. I totally ran out of miniatures and do not feel like buying some new right now.
So I checked my bitzbox and found some "intersting" looking little heads.
The result thus far is this:
A Mega Armour Grot!
I want to make three of these , including a Mega Armour Grot-Jetbike.
A grot takes me about 2-3 days, so we'll see whats gonna be done this month.
I'm officially in with this proof:
That's right, I'm doing a Tau KV128 Stormsurge, easily the largest 40k model I've ever owned. I'm really excited about this paint and build, as when I'm done I'll have something very powerful to play with in games.
My idea is to build modular terrain that will fit together to make one big, centerpiece building, or split up into nice looking separate buildings.
So, in one configuration, it should be a single, connected, 24" x 24" structure (approximately), or be able to split up and fill a good chunk of a 6x4 table. In a way, it's inspired by the Khornetress, except that's just too big to be useful for me, and also, I want a structure that looks good and fits on the Realm of Battle boards (the basic shape must have 90 degree corners, and fit the size patterns of the sidewalk blocks, generally). Due to time limitations, I probably wont' finish the whole structure, but as far as I go is as big as the building gets, I guess, so truly.... Size Matters Not!!
@Kb: It's a good job I wasn't drinking when I saw that Proof, or there would now be tea all over my computer! THE TREV COMETH!
Regarding Epic and other small scale minis, I'd honestly not really thought about it. So on a purely arbitrary basis, I'm going to say that 1 base of models (however many that may be, I'm not familiar) equates to 1 model as far as the challenge is concerned. The same goes for anything really tiny, like if someone is doing Ripper Swarms or Necron Scarabs or Orclings for KoW, 1 base=1 'model'. Hope that's all right for everyone.
Hah! It'll be a shame to see the Saga of the Trev come to an end, I doubt any single mini on Dakka has induced so much rage and hilarity both, crossed into so many threads and become such an icon of the forum!
And since you're about to start painting him, I guess I ought to admit that I was totally going to take BC's offer to paint him in the original thread if you didn't! Oh, I am glad I ended up choosing Bugman instead!
He's not had a good life, you be nice. I got him from a teenager that fitted the first lot of glue to him that you had to chisel off, and whatever the hell happened to his feet. He also used to be brown and pink.
Then he moved house with me nine times in four years. He's never had a stable home life.
I CAME FROM A BROKEN HOME TOO, MY UPBRINGING WASN'T EASY, AND YOU KNOW WHAT I DID? I SORTED MY LIFE OUT AND WASNT A TOTAL dill weed TO EVERYONE I EVER CAME IN CONTACT WITH. YOU KNOW WHY? BECAUSE I AM NOT SOME STUPID ARSEFACED DRAGON WOLF FART CATCHER! SURE, I MIGHT HAVE SOME ANGER ISSUES, BUT HONEST TO GOD TREVOR CAN JUST feth RIGHT OFF.

Blanche-y cherubim?
Love to do one of those cherubim but need to find a suitable baby fig to use as the base first. Maybe at some point. Have an idea and a few doodles for a servo-voxspeaker skull thingy which I may try and make for this one
Each model for the display piece I stuck on a temporary base to work on:
I used Citadel Imperial Primer because it is what I had handy and I'd like to use it up before getting a different brush on brand (also conditions are present where I don't feel comfortable with spray primer right now).
The models primed:
The base primed:
Primed! I'll probably start painting tomorrow on these.
Fine start there Ustrello. That DC is gonna look the bomb all painted up.
I can tel this month is gonna do my nut in - watching everyone else getting stuff done and making progress while I'm away and not able to do anything at all!! Lotta sketching gonna get done though!
I'm in. Since I just painted the largest single figure in my army, I'm going small this month.
On their own, these little lads ain't much, but give 'em a cannon...
Proof:
Im in! For only my 3rd challenge of the year, damn Falklands detachment!
Spoiler:
Going to be an addition to Vrosh Tattersoul with his lava armour. He might be nuts, but he is getting lonely. What better way to keep him company than an oversize and incredibly angry amalgamation of Demon, machine and man?
Look, I stole these proofs from the previous thread just so I can enter. Yes the marine has legs now, the first three were taken before I found some legs for him..
djphranq wrote: Oh man is that what some of the CAV stuff looks like, Guildenstern? I'll totally have to look into that system. I've always wondered about it.
it looks pretty awesome. They just had a new KS so should be some new models out soon. I think they changed up the scale some, made it smaller with the newer models, I'm not 100%on that. I just like the mechs etc ^_^
as for progress err i got some of the flash cleaned off my models, which was really hard to see lol

Wish me luck!
DV Helbrute is a nice model, and really fun to paint-take it from a guy who did one and loved it! Looking forward to seeing what you do with him!
I'm in with this beauty. I think this is the first Maelstrom's Edge model, unless I'm mistaken. There may be more depending on how easy the paint will be.
Got some painting done on the entry. Just the skin of the models. I'd have done more but got put in a really bad mood that just shut me down from work the rest of the day.

Cheers buddy!
If you are interested in the kind of paint scheme I am going for, have a look at my Gallery for my previous Chaos Chosen.
My only problem with the Hellbrute model is that one piece on the front did not want to be clipped in, at all and is slight raised away from the model. Not much I could do about that though!
I shall tentatively say that I am in this month
(Provided everything doesn't explode into Chaos at hone again oO)
Here we have Bill the Dark Elf Dragon who has been sat on the shelf for what I think will be the last three years oO
(I hope the red is okay, its just some naff foundation red that his mouth was soaked in before I stuck his face together oO)
Well after getting the dates wrong last month, might as well five it another go, ive had this halfling for about 13 years, this is as clean as i can get him, dint even know what game its from. My sons gretchin next to him for a size comparison.
Alright, I may get this guy done in record time. Just waiting on the micro sol to dry overnight so I can gloss back over the decals and then matte them down. After that it is time for clean up, laying down the martian ironearth for the base and weathering powders.
When will the league points reset? Basically I haven't entered anything before but wanted to start doing it. Wont I just be far behind on points? (not that they matter I get that, but for personal glory!)
Icelord wrote: When will the league points reset? Basically I haven't entered anything before but wanted to start doing it. Wont I just be far behind on points? (not that they matter I get that, but for personal glory!)
The League will reset after this month's challenge, March's round will basically be 'Round 1' of the new rotation (internal jury's still out on whether I'm restarting the numbering, or keeping it running. Probably the latter) and everyone will start on 0 points again, ready for Januine to trounce us all over again.
I'm also looking at restructuring the scoring system a little for the next round; when all this started, I decided only to give extra points out to the top 3 entrants as I was expecting maybe a dozen entries per month at the most. With how the challenge has exploded right from the off and we routinely get 30+ entries, I think it's possible that there are a fair few people each month that miss out on points despite having a clear lead over the rest of the field. While only 3 gets the bonus, there are usually 6-8 or so painters that get a large portion of the votes, and I think that going into the new rotation, things might be altered a little to better reward them.
Still not sure how I'll go about introducing this yet. Maybe 15 for 1st, 12 for second, 10 for 3rd, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 for the remainder of the top 10? Alternatively, I guess something could be done tracking the exact number of votes for everyone from month to month, but that's a lot more work for TP^DC who's volunteering his free time to keep the tables updated.
Anyone got any thoughts? I'd like to keep it points-based, I think, just to make it manageable, but I'm open to suggestions on the exact numbers/method.
how about your points are the % of votes you get? I was going to suggest number of votes but perhaps the amount of people voting each month drastically changes.
The League can be found here, I'm not sure how recently it's been updated as the curator has been rather busy from what I understand, but it'll be sorted soon enough.
Only issue with that is that it then pushed the winners even further out ahead, Looking at the vote numbers if someone gets even something like 15% and a 1st place bonus, they could very quickly become untouchable, and that's kind of what I'm trying to avoid.
Yep, every completed entry would get at least 1 point no matter what system we go to.
Not to be awkward, but could this point discussion be moved to the thread I linked above? Just keeps things easier for me when it comes to reviewing people's ideas if they're all in one place, and stops this thread getting distracted.
He's not finished jet but I ll try to change that thecnext days...
Automatically Appended Next Post: I just thought about it ...
wouldn t it be smart to upload a proof pic AFTER completing all Grots ??? Sometimes I ....
It is a daemon possessed dunecrawler for my dark mechanicus counts as skitarii/cult army. All I have are imperium armies so I thought I'd go evil for a change
Blu-Tak gone and GS in place so when the GS has cured I will prime it. Going to go for a purple and black scheme. Tempted to have the organic components based a light grey and then purple wash over them and then use wet blending on the legs and tentacles to blend purple in with possibly a nuln oil wash after. Think I might have to make a minnow too to test the scheme out
Jeah, I made one a few months ago as an attackiert squigg for my Warboss. Now I wanna make 3 to 4 for this months' competition. I m still not sure If I l try to add a Jetbike or (litt Bit easier), a Grot Tank.

Cannot wait to see this one done! Will the table be populated by epic minis?
You can say that again!!!
Sorry to divert, but I've finished gluing together another Mature Angel and 2 minnows. They are here, but am not posting as proofs yet until I see how much I get done this month, I am only pledging the Rock Crawler for now, but we'll see.
Not sure if the scale would be right.. i made a little tank out of sprue tho and i did find a book bit i am gonna use, and i also made the blast templates out of green plastic
I'm making progress on my entry:
So far so good, but my job has made me pretty tired lately, especially since I'm in the middle of a 6-day work week thanks to being called in on my day off (oh well, my wallet is happy about that!). Hopefully I can forge ahead and keep going on this model, its been fun to paint so far!
So long as it's made clear that the Soul Grinder itself isn't the focus of the piece (unless you're entering that as well, it'd fit the theme if you've got proofs and such) then I'd take no issue with that.
Alright so I finished up my possessed dunecrawler, only problem is that my light box was too small and I don't have much of a better set up. I could try something if you all think the pictures could be a lot better.
Thats a good idea on the cropping (which I just did), and the pictures do look a lot better. But do you all think I should just re shoot them and re crop them so they are more centered?
I think if you have time Ustrello, it's a good idea to reshoot. None of your pictures show 100% of the model, which is a crying shame.
Para, I don't think I'll get the Soulgrinder done in a month, but if I do, my proof will be the receipt from today. I've already started building and messing about.
Bloody lovely work Ustrello. You're the one to beat this month. That DC is fantastic looking. Colours really pop and I love the weathering on the underside with all the red dust being kicked up onto the legs. Great work.
BC - you're doing a soulgrinder? Hope you get it finished.
3rd and final of the 3 I got last year, I probably won't get any more as the ones they still have in stock I'm not a massive fan of. In hindsight, I kind of wish I'd got their Corax for my Shattered Legions force... but then, that FW one is awful shiny! I always said if I got another FW one it'd be Horus, but Corax is awesome and actually useful to me from a gaming perspective.
The FW Corax is lovely. I've put getting him on the backburner for now and got something else with cash but fully intend to get him at some point this year
Januine wrote: Bloody lovely work Ustrello. You're the one to beat this month. That DC is fantastic looking. Colours really pop and I love the weathering on the underside with all the red dust being kicked up onto the legs. Great work.

No, but there'll be treadmill-using daemonettes chasing terrified guardsmen.
"a fusion of the most powerful daemonic entities with machines of war". Nobody said how exactly that had to be achieved.
Calling mine done! These aren't the final pics, it'll be cut down to the allowed 5 for the final entry but thanks to Jan's suggestion I got carried away in the photo editor!
Photos are much better. Great job. Love the presence you have portrayed for him with the depths of the reds and the ageing of the bronze sections. Can I just query, it may be my eyes, but is the head a little small on that sculpt?
Yeah, the Kabuki Primarchs all have really small heads for some reason! It's as if they're 25mm rather than 28mm, I stuck Vulkan and Morty next to Angron when I was back home at Christmas and they were rather wee in comparison. A standard SM head would definitely look massive on these models, but even in proportion to itself, the one here is a bit off. Still, I think it's a great sculpt, captures the character's presence perfectly.
Oh definitely! He's a great sculpt, but the head does stand out a bit. End of the day, he's a great addition to your collection regardless of his head size
This is NOT finished But I have been a busy bee this week! I'm not sure how much more I'll get done before the end of the month though -- real life beckons :( And I kind of want to build a new Sicaran tank; my old camo/silver one I keep using with blood angels is bugging me.
As to the theme of this month's contest -- Size Matters Not -- this is a set of modular buildings that can be broken down to use separately as little ruined buildings, or physically connected to each other to produce a single really large structure. I want the completed structure to be about 2'x2'.
The realm of battle board and some of the background props are not part of the contest (they were painted before) -- it's just there because I didn't take these photos specifically for the contest, and anyways, this lets you get a taste of what my gaming table will look like with the structure in-place Before I wrap up for the month, I'll take some pictures of whatever I get done that will be used for the contest.
@Paradigm - That's okay, bud I'm pretty sure I'll get SOME more done. We still have 3 weeks! Don't want to make more work for you than necessary. But thank you!
It's no problem, I've stuck your first pic in the OP so if all else fails, there's at least something there to show (and that frankly, looks awesome! )
No matter how many pics I take this looks nothing like the real thing, but never mind. Hopefully I can get time to take some pics during daylight and see if that helps.
Anyways my small amount of progression (havent decided if that colour tartan will remain or not) (Note To Self - Do the bigger model option next time )
For photos, put a full piece of cardboard against a wall so it bends to a curve. Paper will work for small models. Get two light sources at least on the model, don't use a flash.
If you can, find a program that can white balance photos.
I like it dude, looking forward to seeing how you finish it
@Paradigm, nice work there, I particularly like the rather battered ancient looking tome and the cloak looks good too. I've always found getting the right depth and texture for white cloth to be really difficult.
@Talys, Holy crap! How'd you get all that done to that standard in such a short time?! Very clean looking buildings.
@Billy C, look at my entries for last month to see the difference lighting can make! That's a nice looking squig you've got there, you've done a really good job on the tartan particularly. I end up taking photos under the spotlight rack we have over the kitchen table to get enough light; try having a look round your house, friends houses, maybe even your FLGS for a better light source. I'd love to see some better photos for your entry.
@Jadenim - Terrain like Cities of Death is actually really easy to paint. Just airbrush (or spray paint) the darkest color, do washes with humongous brushes, drybrush it all (again, with big drybrushes) without paying a whole lot of attention.
By that time you've covered like, 85% of the surface area. The trick with the Imperial City terrain is that most of the other colors are metallics (silvers, golds, bronzes), and Warplock Bronze and Leadbelcher have almost perfect single-coat coverage. So those go on very easily, but you must be careful, as mistakes are very time-costly -- so cut the edges, then fill in the gaps, then wash, drybrush again, and done!
I do cheat in a couple of places. During assembly, I use a benchtop belt sander to grind all the edges to the right size, and I have a special jig that I made up that ensures that every piece comes out perpendicular and identically-sized, so that during assembly, they all fit square and line up without having to adjust.
During drybrushing of the metallics, there's a tendency of flecks of paint to get onto nonmetallic surfaces. For silvers on grey, you can't see that much, but golds are highly visible. So to fix it quickly, I use a air gun (attached to a big contractor's compressor) set at 80 PSI and just blast the model
Oh, and for the Sanctum Imperialis pieces that look like there's a lot of gold with many clean-cut edges -- almost all of it is airbrushed, drybrushed, and then assembled at the very end.
I forgot to take a picture of the sprue, but here are some of the parts with a basecoat of Alclad Dull Aluminum:
This is Bandai's 1/72 scale First Order TIE fighter as seen in The Force Awakens. Though it may not be obvious, the newest version of the venerable TIE fighter is actually a fair bit smaller than the original TIE.
Im not the best painter, but painting this little dude aint easy. Here is some wip shots, antbody got advise on doing face abd eyes on these old metal ones, as the cast is not the quality of todays minis its makes the paintwork look really bad. But nonetheless , he is getting painted.
I got a question about the limit. As I anounced, I am going to put in some "special Grots" I planed and built 4 of them and thought about adding either a Jetbike or - and this idea is my favorite idea - a scratchbuilt Grot Tank. Is it okay or should I only do the Grots?
Some more WIP photos of my First Order TIE fighter.
I tinted the canopy and top hatch glazing red with Tamiya Clear Red:
Chipping on the main hull complete:
The pilot before being placed in his seat:
Wings:
Closeup of one of the wings:
I need to complete the cockpit tub and assemble the cockpit ball before attaching the wings. I also need to start on the base, which will probably be snow themed to mimic Starkiller Base.
So here is my final PROOFpic of my last 3 minis.
So all together there are 4 Mega Armour Grots (WarGrot, GrotMek, WeirdGrot & RocketGrot)
plus 1 GrotTank - who still needs some work on it.
I think we need to have a spin off thread for things that don’t get done in time. "Dakka’s (Unofficial) Painting Challenge: Where are they now?” Where people can continue to work on stuff that didn’t make the deadline. Don’t need to reset it every month, just keep on rolling it forward.
I know some of us have blogs we can just continue in, but not everyone does, and this would let them keep getting feedback/encouragement from the community.
That's a very cool idea.
Or even if say, once a year we do a "revisited" contest that stands alone and people can enter one of their proven failures that they wish they'd done on time.
I have internet again - sweeet. Still away so still no hobby :(
@craghack - sweet servo skulls - what are they from?
@bc - loving it. Can't wait to,see that finished and painted!!
@nordicus - that's a seriously fine piece of nasty. Great work
Wow, there some great conversions and entries so far, I've not even started, (busy couple of weeks). Nice work guys.
I'm doing a Furioso dreadnaught. The problem is, I've not done any blood angels so far, (they're my next army!). I've started a few test models and I've come up with a blend and tone of red I like, (see piccy below). I just need to practice it and add some highlights (it has a little v thin evil sunz scarlet layered). Does anyone have any tips on highlight colours for this scheme (GW paints preferably).
I want to keep away from oranges as I find a little bit of orange edge highlighting can make the whole model look very orange. I was thinking perhaps cadian flesh tone? start with 50:50 mix cadian/mephiston, cadian then cadian/screaming skull. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
With this picture I know the rest is very basically done and its not as neat as it could be but its just a test for the reds; I only did the metal and gold as it was annoying me seeing it primed white.

Loving the other entries so far, as well. Mine is still very much in progress, here's the latest WIP shot:
As you can see, the legs are done other than minor touchups. I put them on the base, but I haven't glued them as I intend to finish the base first. That means I will need to mark out where the feet will go and put texture paint down around them. I'll need to prime and paint the dead space marine scenery and rocks before I add the texture paint, though. In the background you can see the front plate for the body. The main colors are down on it, just the details left.
Little steps. Rather than carve up a £10 Daemonette for each wheel, I've managed to mold a set of four different ones in white.
A fifth only worked from the waist up, so she's going to be violating a guard on the ground.
Just need the face-up Praetorian casualty.
Edit: Just to be clear: I'm not mass recasting daemonettes.
That's the only one that didn't come out with limbs missing, I'm not a recaster, I'm a modeller who didn't want to waste £40 of irreplaceable models for something you won't see once it's built.
Here's mine before I deal with the bases. I'm hoping next week to do them. And then patch up the highlights on the faces, do eyeballs, and get decent non-potato pictures.
I don't think I'll be able to obtain (or master use of) Greenstuff by the the time this competition's deadline will roll around, so here's my proof for entry, for the time being.
I'd sure like to be able to convert the front & center one into grot Yoda (Yogrot?), but we'll see if I have time. In the meantime, I'm going to focus on just having something in time for the deadline.
Oh, great Warboss! Ehehe... Hmm! War not make one Boss!
All finished! Here are my 4 Grots in MegaArmour and their GrotTank.
I´m still working on the fluff. If anybody feels inspired and willing to support me with this ... feel free to do so.
I´m not a storywriter, so ... don´t expect too much...
@Jadenim: Thanks very much! I mostly referenced the box art for the kit to figure out how to do the screen glows. I'm hoping a glaze will improve them rather than wreck them!
@Nevelon: Lol funny idea! Actually I always imagined some kind of force field protecting the cockpit from falling rocks and well-thrown grenades. Not sure how to model that, though. Maybe next time!
48 hours till I get back to my home in Korea and can paint again. Still no idea what I'm gonna enter this month. Given the amount of time I have left and the weekend is gonna be taken up photographing - reckon it'll be something on the small end of the 'size matters not' spectrum
I'm working hard on my entry when I find the time.
I've certainly got a new found respect for those people painting Blood Angels (not to say that painting other marines isn't also problematic). I must admit I thought it would be easy, up to now I've painted orks and over the last year my painting has improved dramatically. I didn't realise I'd more or less be hitting reset with a new army!
I'm looking for a critique on my Furioso so far. Any tips to make it look a little less bland. I'll be cleaning it up a little (some of the edge highlight has wandered off course!) and then tackling some chipping on the paint work in the next few days but something seems missing, I just can't figure what. Is it just the battle damage/paint chipping/weathering?
Cracking stuff, everyone, should be another great month, some fantastic work already and Jan hasn't even started yet there's still two weeks left!
@Kustomer D: Really characterful work there! Reckon you'd be able to cut it down to 5 actual pics, though? I usually allow one or two over with montages like that if they're needed, but it would be a tad unfair for me to let you enter all of those. Sorry!
@Moolet: It's looking wonderful so far. Two things really bring large, flat-ish surfaces like that to life, though; some weathering around the edges (not so much that you lose your neat edge highlighting, though) and some script/scrollwork (just tiny white lines to represent inscriptions and such, really adds a lot). That cannon barrel is superb!
To be fair, I think Januine is yet to finish, which is the point where you have the conflict of wanting to give him a medal for a cracking piece, and wanting to throw his brushes in a well so he has to fingerpaint on the next challenge. I suggest finishing before then to avoid giving up entirely.
In all honesty though, I have a deep chest infection and the start of tonsillitis, so it's less about "Wah! I can't win" and more about "how much effort can I justify whilst fighting my own body?"
I had serious fun building that before I embedded the (superglued) brass rod deeply into my finger, but the incident makes me feel I should rest up.
BC, hobbying will be there any other day. Your health comes first. Rest up and plan some more devious places to hide Januine and Lechine's brushes
And to Januine and Lechine I say we're only being light-hearted, a little healthily jealous and most importantly in awe of your skills. That said, if you want to fingerpaint next month we would all be very grateful
Fantastic entries so far, special mention goes to your Mega-grots Kustomer D, your imagination is matched by ability to model, fantastic. Will you kustom rule them? 2+ save and -1BS to opponent as they are too confused to aim properly. Also the powerklaw on a str2 model is hilarity in itself! Awesome work.
@ Paradigm, thanks for the input, its very much appreciated. On my orks I throw weathering, scratches and battle damage around like its going out of fashion. I must admit I'm a little nervous on hitting the right amount with marines. I love the idea of the script/scrollwork inscriptions. I'll give it a go, if you have any piccies close at hand of what you mean I'd love to see them.
I really enjoy seeing the progress on all the entries. =)
Ha thanks for the positive feedback all. I really like the Atrapos model, I spent a solid 9 hours painting him on Sunday so I'm glad he's well received.
I've only 'placed' one time in these competitions so I wouldnt worry too much about it, I just enjoy having a theme to think about and work with. This month was a little hard I'll admit.

Here's one recent example of mine, taking a look at some SM artwork should also give you plenty of inspiration for the kinds of details to paint on armour.
Spoiler:
Script on the shoulder pads, particularly the right arm one. Weathering all over
Hope that's of some use, let me know if you need any tips!

I'm looking forward to what you do with Space Marine when we reset.
Thank you guys. I really apreciate it. I thought about giving them some kustom rulez, when I field em next time! I m not sure about it jet cause I just started playing the game (2 training-games in the book!)
Para, you are right, you told me that before and I forgot about it, sorry for that. I ll post some new pics.
BillyC, just participate and see how you improve over the months. It s not always about winning, it s about showing your skills and creativity to a community that might inspire you to get better and try new ways of painting n stuff.
WIP:
The scheme works. Now for the big guys. All that's left is the Matt varnish and then gloss varnish claws and head bulge. More stuff in my MEdge blog
I tried to convince The Wife to go with “Danger” as a middle name for The Boy. By the time she agreed with me, it was a few years to late to put on the birth certificate.
ok - home again, orgainised(ish), ready to get back to the paint(ish) - proof pic(ish) - gonna make a wee familiar for the Magos. A servo skull vox speaker fella thingy.......He's wee but damn the biy is loud
Well, I started and finished my contemptor dreadnought this afternoon. It's not winning anybawards but I'm pleased with how it turned out. Pics will come later when I get my lighting fixed.
I feel that Australia's child labour laws may differ from your adopted region
Also, I'm obviously painting. My primary skill is having women take pity on me for how utterly inept I am at simple household tasks. We've a nanny coming tomorrow so i can pick the missus up, she'll have the place spotless when she sees my try and vacuum the dishwasher or something. Honestly, it's almost a superpower at this stage.
I've noticed that here in the states Kinder eggs may still be gone, but something called "Yowie" is in Wal-Mart and it's similar. Been trying to get the little white fox on the box art, all I got though is a stupid platypus and penguin.
Oh and Vanquisher Squad lead by Knight Commander Pasquena Kantlrig is finished:
First chance to sit down and paint today (50hr weeks suck in fast food) so got the base colours down and started on the base.
Big ideas for him, but may have to simplify to get him done on time oO
Weds/Thurs and Fri to paint up before the end of the month Oo lets see if he can get done xD

If this wasn't so damn funny and I wasn't so in love with your painting I would totally send them a message along the seeekrit women's message line and tell on you!

Love it! I feel ashamed mine is so unfinished it has cobwebs.
I really hope that people will cut slack for particularly small models like these Grots, because there is really not that much room for some of the more amazing things that my fellow competitors have been pulling off beautifully on towering figures with spacious surfaces. With that concern voiced, I'd like to introduce you to... (Warning: long spoiler)

I tried to lavish as much detail on each of these Grots as I possibly could. I really hope you guys like 'em close to as much as I'm proud of 'em!
Thought I'd chuck in a WIP post this month. Done all the detail work on the Witchling (though I may need to go back and reshade the fingers) so it will be robes from tomorrow onwards.
As ever there's some seriously impressive work submitted already.
Stormsurge is still coming along despite some slowdowns due to being busy with RL stuff (including seeing Deadpool this afternoon). Most of the basecoating is done with the exception of the main gun, and I can probably knock that out pretty quick. It's still gonna be a close one as far as finishing by the end of the month.

Thanks, though to be fair that particular bio-titan was apparently born without hearing bio-sensors so the Imperium just has to avoid touch and sight based detection.
Got the little guy pretty much finished up this afternoon. Try and get some proper photos done in the next day of too. For such a little guy was not the easiest to paint!
